Twenty six year old Jade looked at the breakfast table, and thought about how screwed up her life had become. 'Not the bad kind of screwed up, just, you know, kinda screwed.' She decided. Yes, she'd made a lot of money by taking over a failing production studio, turning around the product and increasing the revenue. But despite that, she felt like she'd come full circle.
When Jade was twelve, she met Cat. That was one of the few fond memories she had of that time in her life. How they met, however, was a scar on the goths past tat never fully healed. Glancing over at her longest friend, Jade once again felt that pang of guilt about everything she'd done. Cat was still an innocent, who tried to help despite her ditzy attitude. It wasn't Cat's fault. They just shared an experience.
Jade remembered how, at twelve, she'd been sent out of the home by her father. Her mother and father were having problems, problems that would eventually lead to divorce, and Jade had been one of the contended pieces. Rather then let the girl stay in one home or the other, Mister West sent her to live in a group home. Conflicting allegations of child abuse helped that happen. That was about the time Cat had to spend those months out of her home while her brother was being treated and brought down. The two new girls, bottom age for the home they were in, were made room mates and shared the disdain the house seemed to have for them. Both changed.
Cat would go to become the happy go lucky but reactionary girl, almost bipolar, who's love of theater would be destroyed by one friends manipulations. Jade, on the other hand, grew to be the dark queen, always avenging herself and her friends. Over the nearly year long stay, the goth change so much even her father wanted nothing to do with her, ceding custody of her to her mother. Jade would wind up living with an attitude, taking what she wanted because that was the was the older girls at the group home she'd been in did things.
Now, years later, she had a table full of kids, all withing a two year of each other, eating breakfast and waiting to be taken to school. And all five had problems, despite their young age. "Aden, it's your turn to take out the garbage." Jade called out. She'd adapted a few of the practices of group homes, like weekly assigned chores, and other jobs as necessary. Given the youth of the kids, the oldest being eight, she'd had to town down the structure and increase the play time. But she still ran a tight, but loving, ship. That last part was made easier by the fact that all the children had one thing in common. They were Becks.
Beck had gone down hill after Hollywood Arts. He quickly found himself in collage among people who were far better off then he was. He no longer was guaranteed leads just by his looks and talent. They wanted him to work for the rolls. Jade, having had to deal with Tori, was far better adapted to being the small fish in a giant pond, so bucked down and put the effort in. Beck did too, but his cool and collected exterior cracked and shattered. They broke up when he started using the girls he could so easily get as a bolster for his ego. Jade let him go when the first girl told him she was pregnant.
Beck died running from the hyper jealous boyfriend of one of the Nothridge girls he was nailing. He tried climbing over something high up, and fell. The guy, who just wanted to punch him, called 911, and waited for the ambulance. Jade met him while in the hospital, and promised Beck to check in and see how much damage the pretty boy had caused. Then he gave her his password for his red book, the book of all his conquests.
Even today, years later, Jade was astounded but the number of girls he's slept with over less then two and a half years of his life. A one night stand had about a five percent or less chance of resulting in pregnancy, but some of the girls were longer affairs. Despite that, many had used some or form of birth control, and so that drove the odds down. Five percent turned out to be the number, as he'd slept with over three hundred girls. Jade sought them out, and took in the mothers and children who needed help. It wasn't much of a life at first, but Jade felt a certain responsibility for this brood.
Jade turned to porn to make ends meet. Not on camera, but behind it. They always needed talented people in production, and Jade knew her stuff. She worked as a grip, helped lighting, ran boards, and did whatever she had to to earn money for this small herd of Oliver's Beck had created.
Cat turned out to be one of Beck's conquests, and Jade almost broke when she saw her one time friend. Cat was financially okay, living in an apartment her grandmother functionally owned. But Cat still came across as forgetful, and made bad decisions. Jade had to move quickly when the courts deemed Cat incompetent to raise a child. Thankfully, the state places such a child with family, then friends, and when no one in Cat's family was really a good choice to raise her son, Jade stepped in. Jade legally became a mother that day.
Brought out of her thoughts, Jade looked at the five children eating breakfast. "Cat, get ready to drive the kids to school." She told her friend.
"Kay kay." Cat chirped, happy to do her job. Jade had hired Cat as soon as she could afford to, to act as housekeeper and cook. Cat was even seen as competent to watch the kids, just not make life decisions for them. Thus her son, Aden, was one of the two who had a parent right there.
Jade watched the redhead herd the kids to the car. "Everyone have their backpacks?" Jade asked. The kids all said yes, and Cat did a head and backpack count.
"Miley, go get your backpack. Patty, stop pushing your brother." Jade tried not to chuckle as Cat's voice rang out. It was always like that. Cat would also do a head, backpack, and clothing count at the end of the day. Kids forget things.
Jade worked in porn for years. But after the first, as she just started directing, the company was having major financial problems. Jade bought it for a song. 'How does a pornographic film company have money problems? Incompetent, almost criminal management.' Jade reminded herself. With almost nothing to work with, Jade relaunched the company, and made a lot of money. She did everything but act in those films, and her talent and focus, as well as drive and raw need, made a far better product. She then branched into the adult R movies for direct to video, as well as Cinimax and the like. By the time she sold controlling interests to a major company, it was ready to expand. Jade needed money, and the drive to do so, both of which she lacked.
Instead, she sold it, maintained some shares, and launched her own production company not tainted by the pornographic industry. Her first film for that, in which she acted, directed, and paid for it, Jade managed to make millions. Jade only had to pay a distributor and for promotion. The low budget film didn't look low budget as much as suspenseful leading to horror.
The money included enough to establish trust funds for all of Beck's kids. They'd get a million each placed in a trust, adjusted for their age, and that money would grow until they were eighteen. Then they'd have money for collage, as well as supplanting their income for the rest of their lives. Beck's kids would never be rich, but they'd be comfortable.
But Jade didn't just make one movie. Her production company, as well as her income from the pornographic video company, continued to grow her wealth. Jade was now a name in the industry, and while she was exhausted, wanting to do anything else, the goth felt she had to keep working to support her charges.
"Whats for breakfast?" Then there was Tori. Beck had seduces both sisters, but Trina wasn't one of his baby mama's. Tori, however, managed to make a career for herself and kept beck's child. The Latina wasn't planning on it, until she found out Beck was gone. So Tori kept the child, and was raising her when the two met. Jade dutifully invited the singer to live together, and asked for help. Tori accepted, and moved in.
Jade smirked, and looked over at her now partner. "Cat made pancakes and eggs." Jade told her. "Miley is on her way to school, with the rest of them."
"I still think we should just get it over with." Tori started what had, for the last two years, been an area of contention.
"Toriiii." Jade whined. The goth still called her Vega, but not when they talked about the family.
"What?" Tori asked. "Miley's their sister. And the only parent she shares is Beck. You adopted the rest, why not include Miley?"
"Because I had to adopt Aden." Jade replied, but over the years her resolve had slowly been chipped away.
Tori, it seemed, was more determined then anything that her daughter have as normal a family as possible. But along the way, figured that Jade would do for a father, the roll she often had to play in the house anyways. The discussions had slowly morphed from calm and rational to shouting matches to... Other methods of persuasion. Tori took advantage of how tired Jade could be, and seduced her. They'd been a de facto couple for almost a year, and Jade knew she wasn't going to win. And when she brought up that Cat was there, and Aden's mother, Tori gave her usual useful suggestion.
"Maybe Cat wants to be married?" Tori once again argued, chipping away at Jade's resolve again. "Did you think of that? Or how about asking her? Cat may jump at the chance to be a part of this family, and not just Aden's mom."
"Not everyone is secretly Bi." Jade shot back. But she knew she couldn't win this argument. Maybe Cat would want in, or maybe she'd just insist they make things official between Tori and Jade, but the petite redhead wouldn't stand in the way. It was the reason Jade never asked. That, and Jade was deathly afraid of waking up one day and discovering she was now the wife of two very needy lovers.
"Have you asked her?" Tori pressed the argument.
"Why bother." Jade said flippantly. "We both know how boy crazy that girl is."
"And yet, you said one of the reasons she and Beck got together was Sam moved back to Seattle, and it felt like a breakup to her." Tori explained, using Jade's on explanations against her. "Rebound sex implies a rebound."
Jade was too tired. She was back in the asylum, now running a group home like environment just to keep her word to a cheating boyfriend. Jade had succumbed to a life with Tori Vega, of all people, and was arguing reasons why she shouldn't just get married. Tori was suggesting they add Cat, without even guessing how that would work. Jade felt her head throbbing.
Trina walked in, grabbing leftovers, and starting her breakfast. "So, any progress?" The older girl asked.
Jade almost screamed. 'Of course, Trina was on Tori's side.' Jade groaned inwardly. The older, less talented Vega girl had wound up working for Jade as an assistant, and later as an associate producer, though she never really progressed beyond assistant. Trina was just the person Jade found she could trust to run things during the far too frequent times when she had to rush home and take care of something.
After High school, Trina and Jade met when someone talked Trina into trying out for a part in what was an adult film. Jade talked her out of it, and gave her a job. That job was being her ally, since at that time Jade didn't have any in the company. Trina became her strong right hand, handling whatever jobs Jade needed. The job title she currently held was just an excuse to pay Trina what she'd become worth. Trina was Jade's eyes, ears, and voice when she had family issues to handle. And Trina was Aunty Trina to Miley, and for some reason the rest of the kids. It offended Jade that Trina was so good with the kids, but as exhaustion overtook her, she stopped caring.
"Whats on the schedule for today?" Jade asked.
"As luck would have it, you have a meeting with your lawyer today." Trina chimed, smiling that smile that said she was up to something.
Jade knew the legitimate reasons she was seeking her lawyer today, but also knew she would be dealing with an expert in contract law, as well as the guy who'd been dating Trina for the last few years. "We're not discussing THAT." Jade emphasized the last word.
"Why not?" Trina asked. "Look, boss, you know you've already lost. You're solitary mansion in the hills is infested with children, and Tori wants at least one more. Cat may want one too, so just give in and give them what they want."
"Not how I do business." Jade replied. She was still the dark queen, the damage girl who took what she wanted. That attitude was her survival in Hollywood. But she was also now too well positioned for them to screw around with. Jade was once again trapped by choices, none of which solved all her problems. Marry Tori, and possibly Cat, and her home life gets more complicated. Her business life is always complicated, to the point where she works from home most days. But to refuse Tori was to lose the ally who kept her home life running when she had to go someplace and make a movie. Cat was technically an employee, but the whole situation would be so much simpler if she was a member of the family. Licensing would be easier, and Jade could hire someone to help out without justifying it to Cat, who worked her ass off to earn what she was paid. Cat was used to doing the majority of the work when taking care of kids.
"Well, you can talk to Tori, and Cat, about that later." Trina said. "Marcus will be here in an hour, and I've blocked the whole day for this. If you finish early, you'll have plenty of time do talk things out."
"I'm not marrying your sister." Jade protested.
"Jade, friend, sister..." Trina started. The older girl looked her boss in the eye, and smirked. "I could have arranged it a while ago. The only reason you're not is I respect the institute enough to let you make it official on your own." Trina stood up and walked to the sink to put her dishes away. Then she started heading to the home office. "Why don't you get some rest, and I'll have Tori get you when Marcus gets here. And Tori, I think Andre is coming over to go over your last song you recorded. He'll be here soon."
"Thanks Treen." Tori called back. Then to Jade "What? I needed an assistant, and Trina's already on the payroll."
"You're using my people?" Jade growled. "Vega, are you using MY people?"
"Our people." Tori said, smiling. "Just give in, and it'll all be fine."
Jade sighed. Her fight was gone, replaced by that heavy burden of responsibility and the desire just to have a day off. "Okay." Jade said, her voice soft. "I'll talk to Marcus about marrying you. And I'll talk to Cat too."
"Cat should be back from grocery shopping in a couple of hours." Tori said, smiling. "And don't worry, I won't insist on her marrying me..."
"What the chiz happened?" Jade asked no one. "How'd I wind up here? How'd Beck talk that many girls into sleeping with his? And why is Vega so determined to marry me?!" Jade hadn't realized she was shouting, until Tori placed a calming hand on her arm.
"Beck was always desired, so he could talk girls into bed with him. He got me, and probably Cat, by telling us you'd dumped him for some jerk." Tori explained in a calm voice. "And if I was going to wind up with one of our group of friends, it was going to be Beck, or you. As for the Cat part, I have no idea why I'm so open, except it'd be hilarious to see you as the father in a 'Big Love' type situation. I wonder if Amanda Seyfried is interested in being your wife?"
Jade looked through tired eyes at her soon to be wife and asked "Really? You had to make that joke?"
"I thought it was funny." Tori replied. "And she was in Lovelace, so that touches your porny past. Honestly, she's a bit old, but she'd e perfect."
"She was in Ted 2, so I lost all respect for her." Jade shot back. Then she took a deep breath, and walked back to her room. 'Soon to be our room.' She reminded herself. 'How the fuck did I wind up in such a screwed up life, back at the group home, with the staff screwing each other, and, and, and Cat dependent on me again?'
Jade didn't bother waiting for an answer from above. Her past had taught her whatever divine forces were out there weren't so malicious against her as had a sick, twisted sense of humor.
