Emily Prentiss was driving, racing towards their unsub, Deputy Boyd, with Derek Morgan in the passenger seat. The BAU had spent a long week in Terlingua, Texas profiling him. He's a serial killer who targets illegal immigrants.
As she flew in, she could see Hotch and Rossi there on foot, lying in wait.
"Prentiss, look out," Derek called, MP5 in hand.
"I've got him, I've got him!" Emily called back. Their target was perched on an all terrain vehicle, starting to speed away. Derek opened fire from within the vehicle, successfully sending him flying off of his ATV. The sound was deafening.
Emily threw the vehicle in park and they got out, running into the scene.
"You all right?" Hotch shouted.
"Yeah," Morgan called out.
"No!" Emily called back. "Are you out of your mind? You blew out my eardrum!"
"What did you want me to do?" Derek asked. "He was coming right at us."
"I told you I had him," Emily spat back at Derek.
"He was shooting at us, Emily."
"Well you could have given me a heads up."
"The loaded MP5 and the lunatic shooting at us wasn't enough? Come on."
Emily walked a few paces away, very annoyed by the way he dismissed her. But in the end, they got the result they needed. The unsub was no longer out targeting victims and there would be justice for some families.
However, Emily's ear truly did sustain some damage. She was in a good amount of pain as a result and had to get checked out by a doctor.
"Prentiss, you're not cleared to fly," Hotch said. They were headed back to the hotel to pack up their stuff.
"Are you kidding me? Hotch, I'm fine."
"The doctor says you could rupture your eardrum with the pressure in flight. You're driving home."
"Driving? That will take days." Emily glared at Derek like it was his fault.
"Unfortunately, it's necessary. The rental car arrangements have been made," Hotch said.
Derek looked apologetic but also relieved to be free from her wrath. That is until Hotch involved him.
"You're driving her," Hotch said.
Derek's face scrunched up in frustration. "You're joking."
"I'm not. You don't have to drive the whole way if Prentiss wants to drive some. But she's not going on her own."
"Hotch," Derek pleaded. "She's pissed at me."
"Figure it out."
Hotch was out of patience. Derek looked over at Emily. She had her arms crossed and looked just as annoyed as he felt.
After the paperwork was done and bags were packed, Derek and Emily were dropped off at the rental car place like strays. Emily hadn't let the scowl leave her face.
"Here you go," Hotch said, pressing the bureau credit card into Derek's hands. "Drive safely. Prentiss, pay attention to your ear and call if it worsens. We can find you a doctor on your route."
"No jamming out on the road, you two," Rossi kidded. "You're going to have to lay off the heavy metal."
"Ha ha." Emily spoke the words sarcastically.
"Have fun," Reid said, trying to lighten the mood.
"Clearly this is going to be a blast for me," Derek said. He was being sarcastic and surly, annoyed by Emily's attitude. Here goes.
