After dinner that night Branch volunteered to go out for another look around the perimeter. Lily knew it was in the hopes that the other trolls had actually listened to him and toned down the party to celebrate their freedom. Sighing she let him go to find disappointment once again at the others, she had lost hope in their people toning things down a long time ago. Lily and River made the eiffel berry cake that Grandma Roisepuff had been famous for, it was a comfort food for all of them.
When Branch came back his ears were a little lower than usual and his color a little darker, but with the cake his family made he perked up some before he chose the first board game they played together that night. It was Lily's turn to pick the game when Poppy came pounding on their door yelling, "Lily, Branch, River, are you in there!"
Unsurprisingly to Lily, Branch was the first of the family to hatch to answer Poppy, "We're not going to your party."
Poppy sounded distressed as she answered, "The party's over. We just got attacked by a Burgan."
At the final word Lily's ears filled with the memory of the echoes of screaming and her knees collapsed underneath her. Burgan, which one? She just said a, was there only one? Then another attack of terror, Was it, it couldn't be...
"Mama?" Lily felt hands cupping her face and realized she was kneeling on the floor with River in front of her. Her boy was scared, she hadn't had an episode like that in a very long time and never in front of him. Branch was kneeling on her right and Poppy was standing behind River as if unsure what to do in this situation.
Taking a deep breath Lily spoke, "I'm here." Pulling both of her boys in a hug, "I'm right here." Moving to stiffly stand up with both of her sons helping her, Lily stood facing Poppy, "Describe the Burgan for me please." Lily could see the fear in Poppy's eyes, first a Burgan attack and now she saw someone who was known for being unphased collapse right in front of her, "Poppy."
The soft sound of her name seemed to snap the young woman out of it and she started with the height, the eyes, the crooked teeth. With gentle prompting she talked about the chief's coat, hat, and the bag the Burgan put all of her friends in, "...Biggie, and Creek!"
To be honest Lily had tuned out the names of those taken only listening to the end, because the greatest nightmare to every troll had returned. Chief was on the hunt. Turning to her boys, "Get the lower levels ready, and get what dangerous tools you can out of the main areas."
As the two blue trolls ran to do as she said, Poppy asked, "What's the lower levels for?"
Turning back to her, "They are the survival part of the bunker." Leading her to the shaft and calling the elevator to come back after her boys got off of it, "I'll help them clean, you gather all the trolls you can and get them to the clearing we're at." Before Poppy could ask, "The bunker is stocked with enough food and water to keep everyone alive and healthy for two weeks. We can find a way to get rid of the Burgan problem with that time."
Poppy nodded and looked at the older woman who had gotten out of the elevator and stood in front of the bunker, "Thank you Lily."
Smiling at the overwhelmed girl, "Of course." Taking her by the shoulders, "Remember, they have to wait for us to let them down." The pink troll nodded before running off. Lily took a deep breath and looked at the stars, taking in the sky for the moment before going back underground to get her home ready for the visitors.
