I hope you like the story, and that you tell me your opinions, through them I know if I'm on the right path.
Remember English is not my native language, I hope the translation is correct, check it, but sometimes I miss some incorrect personal pronouns for the phrase, sorry.
I reiterate, I do not own the characters of Friends I only rely on them for the pure pleasure of writing stories without any economic interest, and Monica and Chandler they inspire me
Chapter 2
Chandler
Chandler rushed out of the hospital. He had been delayed by a patient and had to get to his doctor's office on time. Fortunately, he got a taxi that took him to Soho where he had his office. He also lived in Soho, just a few blocks from the office.
When he arrived, Sandy was already at her desk arranging the charts of the patients who had an appointment.
"Hello Dr. Bing, you seem agitated. Don't worry, you'll be on time. You know that the first patients are always a little late. Would you like some coffee?"
"Hello Sandy, no, I prefer some tea. I drank a lot of coffee at the hospital."
"Doctor, since I assumed you wouldn't have eaten, I bought you an avocado and salmon sandwich."
"Oh, thank you. It's my favorite. You're a guardian angel, and since everything is going well with you."
"Very well, Timothy finally got a promotion at work, so now our finances will be really comfortable," said Sandy with a huge smile.
"I am so happy for you two. Tell Timothy I congratulate him and that we will go out one of these nights to celebrate," Chandler said enthusiastically and continued.
"Well, I am going to eat before the first date arrives. Give me the cards so I can see what we have today."
Dr. Chandler M. Bing had finished his career as a pediatric specialist a little over a year ago. He continued to work at the hospital where he had completed his residency for his specialization, but thanks to a certain rivalry between the Montagues and Capulets (that was what he called his grandparents in private) he had been able to have his medical office.
Chandler's childhood and adolescence had not been easy. His mother Nora had become pregnant with Charles when she was a teenager and clearly both families agreed that they should get married. Both the Tyler's and the Bings were wealthy families belonging to the Hamptons aristocracy and they had to save face.
But Nora and Charles' marriage was a disaster from the beginning, which caused Chandler to grow up in his early years between arguments and little attention from his parents, since each one wanted to satisfy his needs. Nora used to bring friends to her house, have parties and Charles too, with the difference that Charles met with them at the pool house, a place Chandler was forbidden to go.
Both grandparents Tyler and Bing were aware of the bad relationship of the marriage, which is why on weekends they took Chandler to their houses, one weekend with each grandparent.
Chandler loved his grandparents, it was a haven to be in their homes, and he received all the attention and affection that he did not have at home since the times that his mother hugged him and told him that she loved him was the prelude to telling him that he had to go out and would stay with the nanny.
Grandpa Tyler was fun, funny and sarcastic, Chandler is sure that he inherited his character from his grandfather Jeremiah, Grandma Tyler was very affectionate, she prepared his favorite meals and at night she tucked him into bed with a goodnight kiss.
Grandpa Bing was more stern, but he was always willing to help him with his schoolwork and explained the most difficult subjects to him. He also spent a lot of time teaching him math until this subject no longer held any secrets for Chandler.
Some of those weekends, at one or another grandparent's house, his uncles also came with their children, and Chandler had his cousins to play with.
Chandler was already 9 years old, when during Thanksgiving dinner Nora informed him that she and Charles were getting a divorce and that his father was going to live with the valet.
Chandler was not surprised about the divorce, it was something he had even heard his grandparents talk about as the best solution, but at that moment he understood the reason because his father had so many friends with whom he met at the garden house.
The divorce was another reason for fights, but this time over who would have custody of him, and his mother finally won.
Charles and his new friend Fred decided to move to Las Vegas with the intention of opening a nightclub.
For her part, Nora was beginning to have success in her career as an erotic novel writer, which kept her quite busy and traveling all the time to promote her books.
This situation worried his grandparents, and both families agreed that the best thing for Chandler was to enter a boarding school for boys where he would be housed during the week and on the weekends they would continue with the custom of having him every other weekend for each family.
That was how Chandler unexpectedly landed in the boarding school, which did not seem so terrible since there were many boys, he would not be alone like at home and he would have fun guaranteed.
He shared his bedroom with three other children, the first few days two of them were very sad, Chandler asked them what was wrong and they answered that they missed their parents.
Chandler was thoughtful and a little guilty, since he did not miss them.
The only thing he didn't like about boarding school were the chores he was ordered to do: make his bed in perfect condition every morning, wash his clothes in the laundry room, take them to the ironing area, keep his uniform in perfect condition, pick up the dishes from the table to take them to the laundry area.
In truth, Chandler had never done any of that; he had never picked up a plate, much less taken care of his bed or his clothes; when he changed, he left the dirty clothes on the floor, since someone else would take care of them.
But in a short time he ended up accepting those tasks.
It hadn't been long since classes had started when a group of students of about 13 or 14 years old began to bother Chandler and his roommates, pushing them, stealing a book, putting a foot on them so they would fall.
One afternoon after snack, Chandler and his classmates went to the recreation room to play cards. The bullies arrived and began to bother them.
"What are you idiots doing…" said the one leading the others, his name was Bruce.
"Let's play poker" answered Chandler
The four bullies laughed "and you idiot, do you even know how to play poker?" Bruce asked Chandler
"Yeah, a little" he answered
"Fine, you're going to play with me and we'll make a bet, if you lose we'll throw you into the pool at the deepest part" said Bruce laughing.
Chandler knew how to swim, but he had never done it in the deepest part, even so, he couldn't go back
"Ok, what if I win? … answered Chandler
"You will never win…" answered Bruce
"I repeat; you have to know my bet if I win"
Bruce had to accept the challenge because otherwise he would lose his leadership in his group
"Well if you win what do I have to do?" Bruce asked sarcastically
"You have to walk down the hall, when we leave the classrooms, on all fours and barking like a dog."
The bullies laughed, this was really a daring child. In reality, Chandler was not very brave, he avoided fights and aggression, but what those fools did not know is that Grandpa Tyler had taught Chandler to play poker since he was three years old and had taught him all the tricks, lies, the faces of nothing when he actually had a winning hand.
It did not take long for Chandler to beat Bruce and he had to fulfill the bet.
From that day on, the bullies did not mess with Chandler or his roommates anymore, in fact during the following courses they achieved a certain degree of friendship, it was difficult not to be friends and have fun with a guy as funny, witty and talkative as Chandler, who also always helped his classmates with their homework.
During Chandler's time at boarding school, Charles visited him twice a year, picking him up on Fridays, taking him to his parents' house at night, until Sunday night when he dropped him off at school.
Those days with his father Chandler had a good time, he was surprised by how different Charles was now, smiling, happy, he got along very well with Fred, who had been his formal partner for some time. When Charles took his son with him, he did not enter the Bing house, he was dead to his father who did not forgive his choice of life, but it was obvious that the grandmother loved her son.
Chandler had just turned 15 when he found out that during the summer he would spend 15 days with his father. Charles came to pick him up, they flew to Las Vegas, he visited his father's club, then together with Fred they took a flight in a small plane over the Colorado canyon that left Chandler speechless, that was a great experience, then they flew to San Francisco and with a rented car they toured the city and its surroundings.
Chandler came back happy, he did not stop telling everyone about his vacation and showing them the photos he had taken. Also during those days, he realized that Charles and Fred were a couple who really loved each other and was happy because his father had found his place.
Obviously, Chandler not stopped talking to everybody about those vacations, which made a dent in the relative rivalry between the Montagues and the Capulets, which determined that the following summer Nora decided to take Chandler to London and Paris.
Obviously, on these supposed vacations, Nora went to those destinations to promote her books, so as always Chandler stayed alone in the hotel, but in both cities he studied all the tourism possibilities they offered and did them all, he knew, in addition to the main attractions of London and its museums, some surrounding cities, Oxford fascinated him. In Paris he did the same, not only did he take tours, he also loved walking through its streets and sitting on a terrace to watch people go by, especially the girls who were all beautiful like models.
At boarding school, he had no chance to socialize with girls, so in Paris all his testosterone was in overdrive and self-satisfaction was an important part of his trip…
One afternoon when they were in a swimming competition, one of the students ran, slipped and fell into the pool before hitting his head against the edge, which made him lose consciousness and sink.
Chandler, who was in the pool, swam desperately to reach him. The teacher and the assistant had also jumped into the pool and the three of them managed to get the boy out of the water. Chandler was shaking seeing the blood and the boy who was not responding, the teacher told him to move. Chandler sat on the side hugging his knees, still shaking.
The teachers began with the CAB maneuvers, while the nurse and the doctor from the institute arrived.
After a few minutes, which seemed like hours to Chandler, the boy came to and began to breathe. They quickly put him on a stretcher and took him away.
Chandler remained seated in the same position. His counselor, Mr. Lewis, saw him and sat next to him. "Chandler, are you okay…?"
"I am, but him? ... where did they take him? Is he going to live?"
"They took him to the hospital. They have to monitor the blow to his head, do tests on him. He will probably be under observation for a couple of days and then return to class. Your reaction was very brave and fast."
"And what did the teachers do to him?"
"That is called CAB Compression's, Airway and Breathing. Its timely intervention can save many lives, for example, people who suffer heart attacks," Mr. Lewis explained.
"And anyone can learn and do it," asked Chandler.
"Yes, in fact, we should all know how to do it… if you want, I can ask nurse Tomas to teach you."
"Can I learn?"
"Sure, I'll talk to him tomorrow and arrange days he can teach you."
Not only did Chandler learn the CAB, the nurse also taught him how to give injections, how to bandage a wound, make a compression tourniquet, and how to apply a splint.
The following year, the counselors began talking to the students to see if they would continue studying and to offer them all the career possibilities they could pursue.
When Mr. Lewis asked Chandler, he was pretty confused. He wanted to pursue a college degree, but he wasn't sure which one.
"Chandler, what are you interested in?"
"I'm good at letters, my mother has read some of my essays and thinks I could be a good writer… but I don't like the life my mother leads, locked away for hours writing, or traveling the world promoting her books, just because I have a facility and some talent for writing, that with it I can develop my creative side, doesn't mean that that career is my dream"
"I'm also very good at math, I thought about economics or systems, but then I see myself spending my whole life in an office, surrounded by numbers or systems or computing machines and I feel like I'm going to go crazy from boredom"
"As you see Mr. Lewis, I'm not clear about anything"
"And it didn't occur to you to think about medicine…" Mr. Lewis commented discreetly
Chandler looked at him blinking "medicine…. "I…"
"Look, you liked learning all the actions with which you can help someone who is hurt, it is a career in which you can never get bored, there has to be a certain degree of creativity to establish which path to take when it comes to determining a pathology, you are not going to be locked up in an office, and most importantly I know that you are generous, in your personality there is a clear tendency to help" … "Here, I will give you some brochures that explain the paths to follow, I know that what I propose is that you take on one of the careers that require more study, dedication and time, but you are the student who finishes high school with the best grades and concept, which would be extremely useful for you to get into medicine… think about it"
Chandler thought about it a lot, the career was long, between 10 and 12 years if he wanted to have a specialty, he also spoke with his grandparents and his father, between them all they were willing to pay for his career. Instead, Nora thought that he should pursue literature, to dedicate himself to writing, this job was much more profitable and glamorous than being a simple doctor, and she was not willing to invest her money so that her son would spend his whole life ignored in a hospital. -
Finally, he sent his application to Columbia, with letters of recommendation from his professors and management staff, and was accepted.
Now he had before him 4 years of Bachelor's Degree in pre-medicine, after passing the MCAT exam (Medical School Admission Test) would follow 4 years in medical school, and since he had already decided that he wanted to pursue the specialty of pediatrics, he would have two more years ahead of him with the residency in the specialty. He would only be able to practice when he was 28 years old, provided everything was perfect.
When graduation was approaching, Mr. Lewis called Chandler to his office. "Chandler, I am sure that you will do well in your career, that you will be an excellent doctor, you will become a recognized professional. All of this will be based on your intelligence, your dedication, in a word, your brain. Today I want to talk to you about your heart. I have known you since you were ten years old, I know your story and although you never wanted to go deeper into your feelings, you always avoided that conversation, it is necessary that you decide to resolve that part of the human being that you are. It is impossible that the type of relationship you have had with your parents has not left traces, pain, wounds in your spirit, it is not enough to be an excellent professional if at the same time you are not a complete, healthy human being, sure of yourself in all aspects of life. You have to talk about what you feel, what you have buried under laughter, jokes, sympathy. You have to let out what has hurt you so that you can heal. That is why I recommend that you go to a therapist…"
"I am not crazy Mr. Lewis."
"Of course not, I never said that, but tonight in your bed tell yourself that nothing from that past hurts you, injures you, paralyzes you, scares you, that is not crazy, it is recognizing what you buried and trying to resolve it and, talking about it with someone who does not know you, will help you bring those feelings to light and overcome them"
"You have always been very honest with me, you always guided me with wisdom, I think you know me more than I know myself, I promise that I will think about it and try to follow your advice." Chandler said goodbye to Mr. Lewis with a hug.
Already in the Bachelor he made friends, guys and girls, he began to have dates, but none of them progressed beyond three or four dates, there were many excuses, but the reality was that when he really liked someone he began to feel panic, he was sure that the girl would leave him and he would end up suffering so he would break up sooner. One of his friends to whom Chandler had confided episodes of his life and his fears advised him to go see a therapist and he immediately remembered Mr. Lewis's advice that he had not followed.
It was evident that there was something that was preventing him from committing to a relationship and he decided to see if a therapist could really help him.
During two difficult years, his pain from his parents' lack of attention, his fear of not being worthy of anyone's attention, his fear of being abandoned again, came to light.
The therapist gave him tools to try to overcome those fears, to forgive his parents, to rely on the love that his grandparents had given him. He was important to many people, and he would surely find people, friends, girlfriends, for whom his company and love would be important.
Chandler finished his Bachelor's degree in pre-medicine with honors, and began medical school.
Halfway through his medical school, his grandfather Tyler called him, "Chandler, when all your cousins finished their degrees, I gave them an apartment that would serve as a base to start their lives. But in your case the race is much longer, that's why I decided to bring forward the gift, so that you can have a place to live" Chandler knew about these gifts and that it was impossible to refuse to receive them, he only asked that it not be on the Upper West Side like his cousins, he preferred to live in Soho. So a couple of months later he had his own apartment, however, he decided to continue living on campus, since he would have the company of his friends, but having his own and private place was promising since it would help him in case he met a woman who interested him.
Obviously the eternal rivalry between the Montagues and the Capulets, immediately caused Grandpa Bing to make a trust in Chandler's name for an amount equivalent to the cost of the apartment that Grandpa Tyler had given him.
During the following years, before finishing his medical school, he had two girlfriends. -
In both relationships he gave his best, he tried hard to be a good boyfriend, especially with the second one, with whom he fell deeply in love, he even thought about proposing to live together in his apartment.
But both relationships soon ended in the worst way, both women were unfaithful to him.
Chandler was devastated, this last time he had put all his trust, his love, for him she was the one, but again they cheated on him, they were like his mother, it was the story of his life, his karma, he would always be alone.
The days following his last breakup he had to go to his classes, he couldn't miss them, but he was clearly depressed, but Chandler managed to move on, but with the firm decision to never try to have a committed relationship again, his life would only be physical fun, nothing more.
Finally, Chandler finished college and specialization in Pediatrics. He got a part-time morning position working as a pediatrician at Beth Israel. -
And using some of the money from Grandpa Bing's trust fund, he decided to open his own practice.
