The soft hum of city life filtered through the open windows of Veronica Lodge and Gabriel Delort's Parisian-style Riverdale apartment. It was a sunny afternoon, and the couple was enjoying a rare moment of quiet while their two kids, Briana and Aaron, were out—Briana with her wife Emma and Aaron at a playdate.
Gabriel sat at the kitchen counter, flipping through a French cookbook, while Veronica arranged a bouquet of fresh peonies in a glass vase. Their home was a mix of timeless Parisian elegance and modern Riverdale charm, a true reflection of their blended lives.
"Are you sure Aaron will eat ratatouille?" Veronica teased, glancing at Gabriel with a playful smirk. "The last time you tried introducing him to French cuisine, he cried over the escargot."
"Ratatouille is not escargot," Gabriel replied with a chuckle. "And I'm confident my son has a sophisticated palate. Unlike some people I know."
Veronica gasped in mock offense. "Excuse me? I've eaten at the finest restaurants in Paris."
Gabriel raised an eyebrow. "And yet, you still prefer diner milkshakes."
"Touché," Veronica admitted, laughing.
Their lighthearted banter was interrupted by a knock at the door. Gabriel set his cookbook down, his brow furrowing slightly. "Are we expecting anyone?"
Veronica shook her head. "No. Maybe it's a package?"
Gabriel walked to the door and opened it, only to freeze in surprise. Standing there was Camille, his ex-fiancée from Paris, and Alfie, Emily's charming British ex. Camille's striking features softened into a hesitant smile, while Alfie offered a polite nod.
"Gabriel," Camille said, her voice calm but tinged with curiosity. "It's been a long time."
"Camille," Gabriel replied, his voice measured. "This is… unexpected."
Veronica, curious about the delay, joined him at the door. She took one look at Camille and Alfie and immediately pieced together the situation.
"Ah," Veronica said, her tone cool but composed. "This must be Camille."
Camille extended her hand, her expression unreadable. "And you must be Veronica."
Veronica shook her hand, her grip firm. "That's right. Gabriel's wife."
The word wife hung in the air for a moment. Alfie shifted awkwardly, clearly sensing the tension, while Camille's eyes flicked between Veronica and Gabriel.
"Wife," Camille repeated, her tone neutral. "I see."
"And the mother of his two children," Veronica added, her tone softening slightly. "Why don't you both come in? Let's talk."
The Conversation
Camille and Alfie sat on the couch, while Veronica and Gabriel took seats across from them. Gabriel's posture was relaxed, but Veronica could see the flicker of discomfort in his eyes. Camille's composure remained intact, though her gaze occasionally lingered on Gabriel with a trace of nostalgia.
"I didn't know you were living in Riverdale now," Gabriel began, his voice calm.
"I moved here recently," Camille explained. "I needed a fresh start. And Alfie and I ended up in the same apartment building, purely by coincidence."
Alfie nodded, chiming in. "Small world, isn't it? I moved here for work. Never thought I'd run into Camille again."
Gabriel nodded, glancing at Veronica, who leaned forward slightly. "Well, Gabriel and I are happily married," Veronica said, her voice steady but kind. "And we've built a life here with our kids, Briana and Aaron."
Camille's expression softened. "I'm happy for you, Gabriel. Really. You deserve it."
"Thank you," Gabriel said, his tone genuine. "I hope you find happiness here too, Camille."
Alfie, sensing the emotional weight in the room, offered a lighthearted smile. "Well, I think I can say this—Riverdale's a strange place, but it has its charm. And clearly, it brings people together in unexpected ways."
Veronica chuckled. "That's one way to put it."
The Concern
As the conversation turned to lighter topics, Veronica and Gabriel exchanged a subtle glance. There was still something they needed to address.
"Camille," Veronica began carefully, "there's something we should share. When you moved into the building, some of our friends raised concerns."
Camille tilted her head, her curiosity piqued. "Concerns? About me?"
"Not just you," Gabriel clarified, his tone gentle. "It's more about… the timing."
"Jay and Moose, two of our closest friends, were in our apartment not long ago," Veronica explained. "They mentioned seeing you move in, and they were worried it might stir up old memories for Gabriel."
Camille's eyes widened slightly, but she nodded. "I see. I didn't mean to intrude or cause any discomfort."
"You haven't," Gabriel assured her. "But we wanted to be transparent. This isn't about the past. Veronica and I have a strong relationship, and nothing can shake that."
Veronica reached for Gabriel's hand, squeezing it lightly. "Exactly. But we also believe in open communication. If you ever need anything, we're here."
Camille's lips curved into a small, genuine smile. "Thank you. That means a lot."
Alfie raised his glass of water in a mock toast. "Here's to mature adults handling complicated situations with grace. A rare sight indeed."
The room erupted into laughter, breaking the tension that had lingered since Camille's arrival.
A Peaceful Departure
As the afternoon turned to evening, Camille and Alfie prepared to leave. At the door, Camille turned to Gabriel and Veronica, her expression earnest.
"I'm glad we had this conversation," she said. "It's good to see you happy, Gabriel."
"Take care, Camille," Gabriel said with a warm smile.
"And Alfie," Veronica added, "welcome to Riverdale. It's a wild ride, but you'll fit right in."
"I'll take that as a challenge," Alfie replied with a grin.
As they left, Veronica closed the door and turned to Gabriel, exhaling deeply. "Well, that was unexpected."
Gabriel wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her close. "You handled it perfectly."
"So did you," she replied, leaning into him. "Do you think things will be okay with Camille living nearby?"
Gabriel nodded. "I think so. The past is the past, and our present—our future—is right here."
Veronica smiled, her hand resting over his heart. "Good answer."
As the sound of Briana and Aaron's laughter echoed from the hallway, Veronica and Gabriel shared a kiss, grateful for the love and life they had built together, no matter what surprises the world threw their way.
