A black wolf-like dog is running on the grounds of Westmount Park Middle school, while kids are seen running around and goofing off before the bell rings. Two students named Fallon and Conner are playing tag with another kid. A teacher, Mrs Finnegan, is walking through the crowds of students with binders in her hands, as she approaches the dog. "Go on" she says gently to it, but it only growls, causing her and the other students concern. "Everyone stay away from the dog please." She says while the students gather around. Conner picks up a stick and points it at him, teasing him; causing the dog to bark and run away. "It's ok crisis is over, just a stray dog" the teacher says reassuringly.
Students start to head in the school and go along with their business, as a yellow Buggie with the license plate 'Moonchild' pulls up to the street in front of the school, stopping at a halt. A Twelve-year old boy, Bastian Bux, is playing his game boy in the park passenger seat. The sound effects are playing out loudly as his mom turns around and grabs his bag from the back seat. "Oh my gosh look at the time you gotta get going!" She says as she places Bastians bag on his lap. "And Bastian, please, try to be more than just a rear end in a chair." she says jokingly. Bastian chuckles and puts his game in his pocket and before opening the door. "Hey, hey!" She says to him as he remembers and gives her a kiss on the cheek before heading out "Bye." "It has to be even" she says teasingly as Bastian rolls his eyes and chuckles again as he kisses her on the other cheek. "Love you." "Love you." They say to each other before Bastian opens the door and hops out of the car to meet his friends.
"Bastian Bux" "Rhymes with sucks," says Conner and Fallon laughing as they watch them walk by. "Morning to you too." Bastian says sarcastically looking back at his game. "Deep down, they know their morons," says Marley. "Frankly I pity them," says Bastian. "Oh please, save your pity for those who deserve it," Lucas replies. Fallon and Conner have been Bastian's bullies ever since middle school started, mostly because of his shyness. Suddenly, a sound of glass shattering lies ahead. "Hey isn't that your mom's car?" Lucas asks. "Mom!!" Bastian cries out as he puts away his game and runs over to the two cars, the black truck which had smashed directly on the side of the yellow buggy. Laura laid unconscious with her head on the wheel. Horrified, Bastian looks in to see his mother, before finding the same black wolf-like dog from earlier fleeing the scene.
After about 10 minutes of waiting, the ambulance comes and puts Laura on a stretcher and roll her in the back. One of the Paramedics asked Bastian if he wanted to ride in the back with her, so he did. Before Bastian gets in, Marley and Lucas behind him. "Bastian, you gunna be ok?" Marley asks concerned. Bastian at first doesn't say anything and looks over at his mom laying unconsciously in the stretcher. He nods calmly as he tries his best not to make his friends worry for him although you
could still see the worry in his eyes. Bastian then climbs in the back and sits on a white platform while he waits for the Paramedics to close and doors and start to the hospital.
Coming through the elevator the Paramedics push Laura through the hallway, a blanket and straps covering her. "Hey what do we got?" Asks a doctor. "Thirty-five year old female, car accident, closed head wound, blunt object trauma." A paramedic explains. "Is she responsive?" The doctor asks. "Nothing to deep pain stimuli. Pupils pinpoint and fixed B.P sixty over forty and dropping Pulse thready and weak. Thats her son back there he came with us." The paramedic continued. "He can come with us." The doctor says as he looks at Bastian behind. "Hi, I'm Dr Cornish, we're gonna do everything we can to help your mom, so do me a favor, just wait right here on the chairs and let us take care of her okay?" "Is she gonna be okay??" Bastian responds immediately. The doctor turns around. "I promise. I'll come out and see you as soon as I can." The doctor says and puts his hand on his shoulder before walking away. Bastian stays silent for the moment before sitting down in the waiting area watching the doctors do their job before the doors close.
About an hour passes and Bastian is still sitting in the same spot playing his game boy, trying his best to take his mind away from the situation for the time being. A distant voice is heard from the corner. "He's right over here. I'll keep you posted. The same doctor says as Michael comes walking in. "Bastian" Michael says quickly as he starts walking over to him. "Dad!" Bastian quickly puts his game down and runs over to hug him. "Are you okay son?"He looks down at him. "Yeah, how's mom? Can I see her?" Bastian asks urgently. "Shes in the recovery room." Michael says as he puts his hand on Bastian's shoulder. "Did you talk to her?" "She's still unconscious." "…Is she okay?" Bastian asks quietly. Michael goes silent for a moment. "Come on sit down." The two go to sit back down in the waiting chairs. "The doctors say there's swelling from the impact. They've done everything they can and now we just have to wait." Bastian looks down sadly and looks back into his dad's eyes. "Wait for what..?" Michael shrugs. "To see if the swelling goes down." "But she's gonna be okay right?" Bastian starts again. "Yeah I think so. I'm sure she will be." Michael says reassuringly, trying his best to be hopeful and optimistic about the situation for his son's sake. "Come on, let's get this coat." He says as he starts to take Bastian's coat off of him.
About another hour passes and by now Bastian is back on his game boy. Michael takes a deep breath and stands up, while starting to pace as he watches another patient get rolled into a room. While Bastian is playing, a memory starts to replay through his head; "Bastian I thought we had a deal~" Laura says in a singsong voice. "In a sec mom." Laura chuckles. "You and I are mere inches apart and yet only one of us is connecting, so it's a deal breaker, isn't it Bastian?" She says playfully nudging him. Bastian chuckles. "Actually mom, it sounds like the beginning of a lecture." He smiles a little. "Oh it's gonna be a lecture if you don't put that lame game away right now!" Laura continued. This Memory of Bastian's starts to fade away to the back of his mind. "As soon as I finish this level, I'll rejoin the human race, you won't be able to shut me up!" Laura looks away and shakes her head, smiling as she looks back at Bastian. The whole memory ending with the image of Laura's face in the back of Bastian's mind. Bastian looks up for a moment, taking it in that memory with his mom in the car, before looking back at his game.
Michael goes back to sit with Bastian and looks around and back over at him before sighing. "Do you have to play with that thing now?" Bastian finally decides to turn it off. "Lame game. That's what mom calls it." Hearing that makes Michael quiet before speaking up again. "Listen, we're gonna be here for some time so why don't you go out and get some air? Hmm?" Bastian looks up. "Why can't I go in and see her, just for a second?" Michael doesn't answer the question. "Maybe you could pick us up something to eat?" "Will you come with me?" Bastian asks. "No, I've got to stay, in case the doctors want to talk to me. I could use a real coffee." He implies. "Can I get one of those donuts I like?" Bastian asks. "Sure, get one for me too." "Thanks." Michael then gives Bastian the money and helps him with his coat Bastian grabs his game boy and starts to head out.
