Kai POV: It has been a week since I had to use a wheelchair and now I can finally take off the cast on my wrist and on my shoulder. Though Zane said I was still going to have to wear a sling and a brace for a bit. But it's still progress and I'm happy with that, even if I was getting bored waiting for them.
Zane had the others in the command room for a talk, most likely about me, and promised to come right away. However, they were taking a long time and sighed loudly. I hope they're done soon and I can stretch out my hand. It still ached a little, but the pain was practically gone. Plus, Zane said that the fracture was healed to the point where all I needed to do was to be careful until I got some strength back.
My shoulder, though, was a different story. While the bandages were coming off and I was getting a sling it was still bad. The pain was numb unless I moved it, and when I did it was… a lot. It was frustrating how long it was taking to heal, but it's not like I could do anything about that.
I sighed again, quieter than before, and leaned back. I groaned when my side flared, and sighed again. Just like my shoulder, my side was also healing slowly and it was driving me crazy. Because of that, getting in and out of the wheelchair was harder than it should be. At this point it was more frustrating than painful and I really can't wait until all of this is over with. And that is only going to happen when they finally get here.
Like they were summoned, Zane and Nya walked through the door and, after seeing me up, he said, "I see that you're ready."
"More than you know." That made Nya roll her eyes.
"Even when injured you're extremely impatient." she commented, but Zane simply got to work.
As he did, I asked, "So what were you guys talking about?"
"We were discussing the patrol schedule, and how we will go forward until you are able again." He explained. I know that he wasn't trying to, but that just reminded me of how useless I am right now.
But I forced that feeling down and said, "Alright then."
Nya seemed to get it and spoke up, "Come on. It's time to make you less of a mummy."
"Yeah, let's do that." I responded, smiling at what she was trying to do.
Zane, getting the hint, set everything up and said, "Let's start with your wrist. Please let me know if there is any unusual pain."
I nodded and he got started, with Nya close by watching. Probably so that I don't try to hide anything. But my wrist didn't really hurt anymore, it just ached. And Zane was really careful as he unwrapped the bandages, though once he removed the supports the ache became a little more intense. I took a small breath and Nya rubbed my back.
"You good?" she asked, and I nodded.
"It just aches." I answered, though she was completely convinced.
"That is to be expected at this moment. After one week with a brace, that should go away." Zane added, taking it out.
After he adjusted it the ache did get better. And now I could move my fingers, so I flexed them a little. My hand was a little stiff from not moving for so long, but everything was working as it should. But now it was time to move onto my shoulder and that made me a little nervous.
Zane and Nya changed places and he said, "This is going to cause more pain, so I will go slower. You should prepare for that and remember that there will most likely still be bruising."
"And I'm still going to be using a sling, right?" I added and he nodded.
"Cool, let's get this over with." I said, and he understood. But Nya took my good arm and gave me a squeeze. Then she helped me to get the old sling off so Zane could work.
Once that was done I looked away and Zane got started, trying to be more careful than before. But there was still a dull pain that was slowly getting stronger the more Zane unwrapped. I tried to not move as much as I could, with Nya's help, though I still ended up groaning from the pain. That made Zane stop and wait until the pain went down. I took a few deep breaths and nodded for him to continue. Slower than before, he did and finished. Then I made myself look and saw that he wasn't wrong about the bruising.
My whole shoulder was a noticeable different shade than the rest of my body. Nya gave me another squeeze as she also looked and I sighed quietly.
"At least it's not as bad as before." I said to comfort her.
"Not by much, but it's a start." she whispered as she still stared at it, and I gently nudged her.
She looked at me and I smiled at her, "Come on, it's not going to look like this forever. I'm healing and getting better by the day. Remember that."
That made her smile a little and said, "I know. I'm just impatient, like you."
I rolled my eyes and Zane added, "In the afternoon we can start icing your shoulder and ease the bruising. For now, we can put on the new sling."
Carefully and slowly, the three of us managed to get it as well as a plain white shirt. Honestly, it was more comfortable than the other one and helped with pain more too. Right now everything feels so much better than the past few weeks.
I sighed deeply and asked, "Is there anything else?"
"Nothing major. For now just rest until later." Zane answered, cleaning up.
"You hear that. Rest and try not to escape." Nya joked, and I laughed.
"I don't think I could even if I wanted to. I still have my leg to worry about." And we both laughed.
"Oh, about that. I would like to wait one more week, but after that we can take the cast off too." Zane added, and that perked me up.
"Seriously?" I asked, and he nodded.
Nya also looked happy from that and said, "Looks like we have something else to look forward to."
"No kidding." I responded, getting excited from the thought of being able to walk and stand by myself.
Things really are looking up.
