Episode Synopsis: When Puck is sent to juvenile detention, Sam is introduced to the New Directions as a replacement. Mr. Schue also introduces a duets assignment to the Glee Club, offering a meal at Breadstix for the winning team. Rory has trouble getting himself a partner as Kurt has his eye on Sam as his duet partner, but Finn tries to prevent them from being partners, thinking back to Kurt's crush on him the year before. Quinn and Sam seem to be having a romance. Meanwhile, Sunshine is invited by Preston (Abraham Lim) to the arcade along with a few friends, which she feels skeptical about considering Gina (Lauren Gottlieb) is one of them. Though somehow Gina shows that she's not as cold-hearted as she seems.

Rory was having a chat with Mercedes. She was pretty cool. And it felt nice to talk to someone in the club other then Finn and Kurt. Also, after he let it slip that his favorite snack was tater tots, she actually found him interesting. Rory never knew that he could find a friend like her. And something about her was... unique. The power of her voice was dwarfed only by the power of her personality. She was confident, she was funny, she knew she was great, and she wouldn't take any nonsense from anybody. All things he lacks. She was everything he lacked in himself, and that was what was most amazing about her.

"All right, let's, uh, let's gather around." Mr. Schue said as he enters the choir room. The Glee Club were mostly chatting while others, (Brittany, Kurt, Mike, and Santana) were stretching for the day. "Sorry I'm late, guys. I was with Principal Figgins. Bad news, guys. Puckerman's in Juvie." He told them, only shocking a few of them: (Quinn and Rory). All everyone else did was shrug in their nonchalant looks.

"It really was just a matter of time." Tina commented.

"What did he do?" Quinn asked.

"He drove his mom's Volvo through the front of a convenience store, and drove off with the ATM." Laughter erupts from the group when Mr. Schue said that.

"Is he okay? When is he getting out?" Rory asked, concerned.

"Unknown."

"He might be the dumbest person on this planet, and that's coming from me." Brittany joked.

"Guys! Let's have some sympathy." Mr. Schue asked, confused of their reactions.

"For a guy who put his needs before the team's? We need his voice, and his bad-boy stage presence." Finn said, unapologetically.

"We can't look at this as, as a crisis. It's an opportunity." He turned it around on them.

"For what? Further embarrassment and humiliation?"

"For welcoming our new member... Sam Evans!" Mr. Schue said, queuing Sam to walk in like he's making a celebrity appearance in a tv show except without any applause, except from his buddy Rory, who is excited for his friend. "There he is."

"Yes!" Rory stood up and clapped for him, with only Finn and Kurt joining him.

"How's it going?" Sam shakes Mr. Schue's hand and steps up to introduce himself. "Hey, everybody. I'm Sam. Sam... I am. And I don't like green eggs and ham." Sam introduced, bringing back the same intro he gave Rory when they met. Rory chuckles at the silence he got from his peers.

"Oh, wow. He has no game." Santana said. Sam tries not to let it discourage him.

"Okay! This is gonna be great. You're not going to regret joining, Sam." Finn stands up and offers Sam a handshake, which he accepts. "You can go grab a seat next to Rory."

"Oh, good." Sam walks next to Rory who he then gives a fist-bump before sitting.

"Don't listen to her Sam. She's like that with everyone. You're gonna love it." Rory said, and Sam nods.

"All right! Question for the group. What's a duet?" Mr. Schue asks as he writes down 'DUETS' on the board.

"A blanket." Brittany answers and gets nods and smiles from Finn and Sam.

"A duet is when two voices join to become one. Great duets are like a great marriage. The singers complement each other, push each other to be better. Now, some people..."

Kurt quietly whispers to Mercedes. "Psst! He's on team gay. No straight boy dyes his hair to look like Linda Evangelista circa 1993."

"You're crazy, circa 2010." Mercedes replies.

"-And that is what duets are all about. So, this week I want you to pair up and sing a duet. And since you guys all seemed to love our little "Defying Gravity" diva-off, I'm making this a competition." Mr. Schue finishes, interesting them.

"What's the winner get?" Mike asks his teacher.

"Dinner for two, on me... at Breadstix." They all gasp, except for Rory and Sam, who haven't been at Breadstix yet. Everyone starts chattering excitedly.

"What's the big deal? Is it like a restaurant or something?" Sam whispers to his Irish friend.

"Maybe they just like Breadsticks a lot in Lima." Rory shrugs in response.

"Who you gonna sing with, Kurt?" After Mercedes asks this question, Kurt looks to the new guy. Sam has sparked an interest in Kurt. Something he hasn't had since that fight with Finn. Perhaps he is his second chance.

Rory and Sam were getting some stuff from their lockers when Rory decided to chat. "So, about Sunshine. The Glee Club doesn't know we're still friends. So I was wondering if you could keep that a secret." Rory asks of him.

"Why? What's the big deal?" Sam furrows his eyebrows when he turns to his friend.

"If anyone found out, they would definitely gossip about it. Then they would suspect me of being a spy or something. Rachel dated this guy Jesse St. James from Sunshine's Glee Club. If they find out it'll be ugly."

Sam shrugs. "Sure man. I'll keep quiet."

"Thanks, Sam. I wouldn't ask this of you if it wasn't important. I didn't expect it to be so hard being her friend. Kurt spent like twenty minutes interrogating me. It was like starring at the face of Jack McCoy."

"That actually sounds pretty awesome." Sam chuckled.

Kurt then walks up to them, well to Sam, he just ignored and walked passed Rory. "Hi. I'm Kurt Hummel." Kurt introduces and holds out his hand for a handshake.

"Hey." Sam takes the hand and shakes it.

"I just wanted to personally welcome you to the glee club." Kurt tells him, though hiding his true intentions.

"Thanks." Sam closes his locker.

"Just tell me. Look... maybe at your old school, you could get away with the whole "I just stayed in the sun all summer" excuse, but I have three gifts: my voice, my ability to spot trends in men's fashion, and my ability to know when it comes from a bottle." Kurt said, surprising Rory. He had no idea Sam was dying his hair. Sam was shocked too but tried his best not to show it.

"I don't dye my hair, dude."

"Yes, you do. But it's just between friends. That's not natural."

"I'm gonna... go... 'cause you're kinda freaking me out." Sam said before he walks away from Kurt.

Kurt decides to follow him with Rory following from behind. "Wait, wait. Maybe my instincts were a little off. Let me make it up to you. Team up with me for the duet competition. Listen, unless you team up with Rachel, I am your best bet at winning."

Rory widens his eyes. Dang it. He was gonna ask Sam to be his duet partner. He even thought of the perfect duet: These Boots Are Made For Walking. Sam's from Tennessee and Rory loves the Sinatras.

"Aren't duets supposed to be between, like, a girl and a guy?" Sam asks him.

"Well, Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor would protest." Kurt tells him, confusing Sam. Rory had known who those were due to watching it with Kurt. Kurt notices the confusion in Sam's face. "Make'em Laugh?" Kurt tries to explain.

"Sorry." Sam apologizes

"Singin' in the Rain." Kurt tries again, thinking he actually didn't watch this. "1952. Nothing. Okay, maybe you are straight."

"What?" Rory chuckles at this conversation.

"Nothing. Listen, rent it, and then look up the menu for Breadstix online, and call me, because we are gonna win this." Kurt said as he walked away, leaving the duo alone and passing Finn.

"Well that was interesting." Sam commented.

"Yep. You gonna take the offer?"

"Maybe? I'll have too watch the movie first. And hear how he sings. How about you? Who are you teaming up with?" Sam asks. Rory just shrugs, maybe he can ask Mercedes tomorrow.

Meanwhile, at Carmel High, the famous Sunshine, while she has succeeded in making a mark in Vocal Adrenaline's banner, she still has to work harder than ever before to make it. She has to work out more than she eats, and her coach treats her and the rest of them like human garbage. However she still has something to get herself motivated. According to Preston, every year, as per tradition of the coach of Vocal Adrenaline over a series of weeks watching the members and compiling a list of potential singers to compete to be a the featured soloist for competitions. Basically, whoever wins will be able to do every song that they do as a solo for the rest of the year, and Sunshine yearns to be on that list. Jesse St. James won this honor four times in a row. With him gone, this is her chance to not only be popular, but to do what she loves in front of a large audience for the first of her three remaining years of high school.

As Sunshine sat down for her water break, she is approached by her only V.A. friend, Preston. "How's it going?"

"Well, I'm sore in a bunch of places, I'm thirsty as hell, and my blisters have blisters." Sunshine replies.

Preston chuckles for a second before sitting next to her and turning to her. "Can I ask you something?"

"Mhm." Sunshine nods in allowance.

"Why are you working so hard. I mean, you're new so there isn't much to expect from you."

"'Cause that's what I have to do. Goolsby's list is up on Friday, and I've gotta be in it." Sunshine said with a serious face before she sips her water.

"You know, this may be a little opposite your Vocal Adrenaline, but you shouldn't push yourself to hard. No point in getting in that list if you don't live to see it." Preston tells her.

"Good point, but there isn't really much else to do, is there." Sunshine replied.

Preston looks up and thinks for a moment, weighing his options before looking back at her with a smile. "I have an idea. Me and a few friends are heading to this arcade after practice tomorrow, and you know, you should come. It'll get the edge off and maybe you'll get to talk to more people." He offers.

Sunshine is intrigued by his offer. She hasn't had much to do for a while outside of Vocal Adrenaline, and her mom does think she should make more friends, but there is something she needs to check first. "Is Gina coming?"

Preston opens and closes his mouth, not sure what to say before replying: "You know, who can keep track about who's coming and who's not."

"She's coming isn't she?"

"Yep."

Sunshine groans. "You know I can't stand her. She keeps making fun of my height and lack of dance moves."

"I thought you earned her respect after that Britney number." Preston mentions.

"Yeah, but jerks will be jerks."

"Then this is the perfect chance for you to get closer. Maybe you can be friends."

"Doubt it." She stands up and walks away.

Preston steps up and goes in front of her and stares at her. "Please? For me?" Preston pouts for a second and then smiles hopefully.

Sunshine stands there for a second, standing her ground before slowly smiling and punching his arm. "Fine. You owe me one." She said as she walks away.

"Oh my god thank you. You won't regret it, I promise." Preston thanks her. Sunshine shakes her head at his dorkiness.

Rory knew he was lacking in connections, and with Finn with Rachel and Sam with Kurt, he had to go to the only option he had left: Mercedes. He knew how talented she was and he thought this would also be a good chance to bond. If they sing together, he can make some ground work. As he works up the courage to ask her, he sees her talking to Santana. He hasn't heard her sing much, but from what he has seen, she's crazy talented. He has to ask her first. He finally walks towards her and taps her shoulder.

"Oh, hey Rory. You need something?" Mercedes asks.

"Yes. I wanted to ask you something important. Mercedes Jones... will you do me the honor of-" Rory begins.

"Ok, you're starting to freak me out." Mercedes commented

"Singing a duet with me."

"Oh thank god." Mercedes sighs in relief. Rory raises his eyebrow. "Sorry, I thought you were proposing or something. Anyway, I'm sorry, but Santana already asked and our voices sorta go together."

"Mm-hmm, that's right, girl! So if we do a duet together, we will be the undisputed top bitches at this school. And if you duet with him, you'll be dead last, so beat it leprechaun." Santana insisted, shooing him away, which he sadly abides. The fact that he had no partner to sing with and that he can't even make headway with Mercedes was really getting him down.

Later he heads off to lunch, and as he picks things up for his tray, he hears a conversation between Kurt and Finn and the distance.

"I just want to sing with him." Kurt said, referring to Sam.

"Then you don't give a damn about any of us. If he sings with you, I guarantee, within a week, he'll take so much crap, he'll have to quit Glee Club. Your call, dude." Finn said before walking away, giving Rory the chance to talk to Kurt.

"Hey, what's going on?" Rory asks his friend.

"It's nothing. Finn just wants me to not sing with Sam." Kurt tells him.

"Why? What's the big deal?" Rory said, confused.

"He thinks that if I do sing with him, he'll get pushed around by those homophobes from the football team." Kurt said as he walks to a table to eat.

"Wait, that could happen? I know that they're cruel, but would they really hurt Sam just for singing with you?" Rory asks.

"It's not gonna be that big of a deal. Look, I just want to sing with him. What are the odds that they'll even find out?" Kurt points out.

Rory shrugs. "Who knows. Well it's your choice, and Sam's choice too, so I won't get in the way."

"Thanks Rory. Speaking of duets, who's your partner?"

"I don't have one. You three were kind of my only options." Rory reminds him.

"Oh right. How about... Mercedes?" Kurt asks.

"She's with Santana." Rory tells him.

"Really? But they hate each other." Kurt said.

"But they love to win obviously." Rory said, with his head down in sadness.

"Well, don't give up. There's plenty of other people to choose from. Now that Artie and Tina are broken up you can always ask Artie." Kurt offers as a solution.

"I talked to him once. He didn't understand a single thing I said." Rory shakes his head.

"Okay, what about Brittany?"

"She asked me for three wishes for her pot of gold. I think she meant sex, but it could've been gold. I probably should've checked before saying no."

"Well there's twelve people anyway. It's impossible for you to not get a partner. Sometimes you gotta let them pick you."

"I hope you're right." Rory nods.

The next day, with Rory still having trouble with his duets project, he walks to the library to check one of the computers for possible song choices when he overhears Mike and Tina having a lover's spat.

"I don't want to do it." Mike told Tina as he enters the room with her.

"We're duet partners, you have to sing." Tina argues.

"I don't even know if I can sing. Everyone knows I'm here to do one thing: dance. You sing and I'll dance around you; you'll be fine." Mike counters.

"No, no. We're singing together. We are gonna win that dinner at Breadstix, and then we can finally have a normal night out." Tina tells him, confusing him.

"Normal? What do you mean? We went out last night." Mike reminds her.

"For dim sum. With your mom. All we ever do is get dim sum with your mom!" Tina said, annoyed with him.

"Here we go." Mike said, revealing to Rory that this is an often thing.

"I'm not saying that steamed pork knuckles aren't delicious. I'm just saying that at Breadstix they have bottomless salad bowls, they refill your salad until you leave or pass out." Tina mentions.

"You can get salad at dim sum. My mom got salad last night." Mike argues.

"There were chicken feet in it. It was a chicken feet salad. All I want is a normal salad that doesn't have chicken feet in it!" Tina yells.

"You're not listening to me."

"You don't care about my needs!"

"Shh!" The librarian said

"We're fighting a lot." Tina realized.

"We should go to Asian couples therapy." Mike offers.

"Why does the couples therapy have to be Asian?" Tina sighs and walks away. Rory decides to talk to Mike while he's alone.

"Umm, is everything okay between you and..." Rory struggles to remember Tina's name.

"Tina. That's her name. And it's fine. Just having some rough edges." Mike replies.

"Because of Breadstix?" Rory asks.

"Sorta. It's also because we've been struggling to enjoy our dates. My mom can be a little controlling and she always goes to them."

"Ooohh." Rory winces.

"Yep. It's kinda awkward to make out when your mom is watching. Anyway, she really wants to win this duets competition, but I can't even sing."

"Oh. Well, you could always try dancing so that people will be to distracted to notice your lack of a singing voice."

"Maybe. I don't know. I just really love her and I want to make this special but... I just don't think I have it in me."

Rory thinks for a second before he gets an idea. "Why don't you let me be your vocal coach." Mike furrows his eyebrows. "No, I'm serious. It won't work overnight, but it'll give you confidence for the song this week and the weeks. Then you can show Tina you can handle this."

Mike thinks about it for a second but then nods in agreement. "Yeah... yeah this could work." Mike and Rory shake hands. "Thanks Rory."

"No problem. And feel free to help me with my dancing while we're at it."

"Yeah." Mike chuckles as they separate, with Rory not finding a duet partner, but he did find a new friend.

Sam had just finished his shower in the men's locker room, but Finn is trying to convince him to end his partnership with Kurt for the duets competition. Though Sam didn't see the big deal.

"I don't see the big deal." See? "He e-mailed me, like, 60 MP3's of him singing, and I thought it was Faith Hill." He opens his locker to get his clothes. "The kid's good."

"Look, this isn't about how good Kurt is. Being in Glee Club is like... it's like walking down the double yellow lines of a highway. If you get just a little off course you're gonna get crushed." Finn explains, confusing Sam even more.

"I got to be honest. You're kind of confusing my head right now." Sam's statement causes Finn to furrow his eyebrows. "I mean, do you remember what you said when you talked me into joining Glee Club?"

Sam is walking beside Finn and Rory who are trying to convince him to join.

"Trust me Sam, you won't regret this." Rory said, trying to inspire confidence.

"I don't know..." Sam said, still skeptical about the idea.

Finn grabs Sam's shoulder. "Look Sam, Nationals are in New York City. Can you imagine at it's going to be like coming home with that first-place trophy? Most of the kids in this town have never even seen the ocean."

"We'll be gods." Rory said. Sam thinks about it and smirks at the idea of becoming popular in his first year.

"I joined up because I'm new here and you and Rory said it would make me popular, and now you're telling me that it's going to get me killed." Sam said as he puts on his pants.

"Well, eventually you're gonna get popular from it, believe me, but until then, you got to lay low a little bit, a-and singing a duet with another dude is not laying low." Finn said.

"I didn't realize you had a problem with gay dudes." Sam accused while putting on his shirt.

Finn quickly denies this. "Look, I don't have a problem with gay dudes. Everyone else does, and we're living in their world, and in their world, you singing a duet with Kurt is a death sentence."

Sam sighs before replying. "Well, I gave him my word. In my world, that's that." He then closes his locker and walks away. A few seconds after leaving the room he is ambushed by a slushy to the face by Dave Karofsky and Azimio Adams.

"Boom! Welcome to Glee Club, lady lips." Azimio jokes as he walks away with Dave. Suddenly Finn's point was starting to show. As Sam recovers from the shock, he feels an arm guiding him to the girl's bathroom. He didn't know who it was but it was a Cheerio, and she took him to a sink to wash off the slushy on his face.

"The blueberry flavor is the worst, especially if it gets down your pants. I looked like a creature out of Avatar down there when I got Slushied." Sam listens to the Cheerio who's voice he recognizes as Quinn Fabray, the head cheerleader. He smiles at her. She's pretty and knows pop culture. It's amazing.

"I saw Avatar, like, six times." He said.

Quinn stares at him with a smile for a few seconds before snapping out of it and backing away. "Oh. Anyway, you'll get used to it."

"You're the head cheerleader. Why do you even bother? I mean, you don't need Glee Club." Sam asks her, wondering why someone so popular would go to a low place in the school.

"I like to sing... and the fact is those guys were pretty cool to me last year when I wasn't on top. What's the point of being popular when you can't do what you want?" Quinn explains to him. Suddenly he understood completely. Plus it was hard to not listen to him when he's so captivated by her eyes. She's the most beautiful girl he's ever seen. Though it's not a big list at this school.

"Lor manari." He said, but received confusion from her. "It means you have pretty eyes. It's Nav'i... the Avatar language. Lor manari." He tries to make a connection but she just stares at him for a few seconds before he walks away, leaving him to his loneliness. "Well that was a screw up." He snaps his fingers in disappointment until a girl enters the room and freaks out seeing him until he sprints away in fear.

The next day Mercedes and Santana, who had only began their partnership the past day had already come up with a number to knock their socks off.

Mercedes:
When I was a little girl
I had a rag doll
Only doll I've ever owned

Santana:
Now I love you just the way
I loved that rag doll
But only now my love has grown

Mercedes:
And it gets stronger, in every way
And it gets higher

Mercedes and Santana:
Day by day
Do I love you, my oh my
River deep, mountain high, yeah, yeah, yeah!
If I lost you would I cry?
Oh, how I love you baby, baby, baby, baby

{They're singing was second to none, and their choreography was energetic, and full of strength. It was truly impressive}

Mercedes:
I love you baby like a flower loves the spring

Santana:
And I love you baby like the robin loves to sing

Mercedes:
And I love you baby like a schoolboy loves his bag

Mercedes and Santana:
And I love you baby, river deep, mountain high

Mercedes:
Oh baby

Santana:
Oh baby!

Mercedes:
Oh woah baby!

Santana:
Ooh Ooh Ooh!

Mercedes:
Ooh Ooh Ooh!

Santana:
Yeah!

Mercedes:
Yeah!

Mercedes and Santana:
(Santana: Do) I love you my oh my, yeah?
River deep, mountain high, yeah, yeah, yeah
If I lost you would I cry?
Oh, how I love you baby, baby, baby, baby

All that can be heard cheering and applause because that is what that song earned. It was energetic, fun, and their voices were two sides of the same coin. Suddenly Rory didn't feel to bad about not singing with Mercedes as much.

"Ladies, nice work. What an incredible song." Mr. Schue high fives the two.

"And just so you know, I've already bought custom bibs for me and Mercedes here. You know why? 'Cause we's be going..."

"To Breadstix." Mercedes and Santana say together with confidence. Everyone chuckles

"Yes. You hear that, guys? You have your work cut out for you." Mr. Schue congratulates the duo. And he was right. It was gonna be tough to beat that.

About a dozen Vocal Adrenaline members got out of their three cars and sprinted to the arcade with haste so they can have as much fun as possible.

Preston:
I got a feelin'
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good, good night
A feelin', woo-hoo

{They enter the arcade and find a large room of fun and games waiting for them. It's a place of beauty. Preston holds her hand to guide her to a racing game, Sugar Rush.}

Preston and Sunshine (Preston):
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good, good night
(A feelin', woo-hoo)

{They then played a first person shooter with Gina and annihilated a bunch of aliens before Preston got obliterated and Sunshine got hit by a spaceship, leaving Gina to win it like a boss}

Preston with Vocal Adrenaline:
Tonight's the night, let's live it up
I got my money, let's spend it up (I feel)
Go out and smash it, like, "Oh my God!"
Jump off that sofa, let's kick it off (I feel)

Sunshine (Vocal Adrenaline):
I know that we'll have a ball
If we get down and go out and just lose it all
(with Vocal Adrenaline: I feel) stressed out, I wanna let it go
Let's go way out, spaced out, and losin' all control (I feel)

Preston (Sunshine):
Fill up my cup (Drank)
Mazel tov (L'chaim)
Look at her dancin' (Move it, move it}, just take it off
Let's paint the town (Paint the town)
We'll shut it down (Shut it down)
Let's burn the roof
(With Sunshine: And then we'll do it again)

{They find a claw machine and Gina wins Sunshine a cool tiger and Preston a shark.}

Let's do it, let's do it, let's do it, let's do it
And do it, and do it, (With Sunshine: let's live it up)
And do it, and do it, and do it, do it, do it
Let's do it, let's do it, let's do it, do it, do it, do it

Preston and Sunshine with Vocal Adrenaline:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (Do it)
Friday, Saturday, Saturday to Sunday (Do it)
Weekend get-get-get with us, you know what we say
Party every day, p-p-p-party every day

{They then play a few rounds of ski ball and use the tickets to win prizes like sunglasses, t-shirts and hats}

Preston and Sunshine:
And I'm feeling (Woo-hoo)
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good night
That tonight's gonna be a good, good night

Preston
Woo-hoo

The trio then lie on grass outside the arcade, all tuckered out from earlier.

"Best. Day. Ever." Sunshine said, stargazing with a smirk.

"Hah, you said it." Preston chuckled.

"Wow, I knew you guys were losers, but to get zapped by aliens because you thought it was scary?" Gina laughed at Preston's expense

"It came out of nowhere. Those things are creepy okay? The tentacles creeped me out."

"Yeah, yeah."

"Seriously guys, this is the most fun I've had since I joined." Sunshine said, feeling a lot more relaxed.

"Well don't expect this to be a common thing. We usually don't hang much and I'd rather not be seen in public with you guys. I'd like to hang on to my street cred."

"Well, you don't have to worry about that, because I've been practicing to get in the short list for Sectionals and-"

"Wait, you think you can just get featured with just a few weeks of practice? Wow, that's hilarious." Gina joked.

"Hey, Jesse did it." Sunshine reminded.

"And he was basically a living legend in Carmel. You came to V.A. because you were scared of some diva in your old school. Besides, you couldn't do it because there's something holding you back." Gina claimed.

"What are you talking about? I just want this, so I can make my mark here. I've been trying to be just like you guys. What could possibly be holding me back?"

"Exactly that. Look we are a machine, a bunch of gears meant to make a killer music machine, but the lead is supposed to show us what the machine is supposed to be. Whether it's a speaker for beautiful music or just some alarm clock. Basically, if you want to be the lead, you'll have to be you." Sunshine let this sink in. She didn't really think of it that way before. She just wanted to be popular. She didn't know exactly what it would mean. "Look, either way, I don't care. I don't sing. But I do care about winning, so if you do win, you have to be a winner. Don't screw this up." Gina gets up and walks back into the Arcade for a soda.

Preston nodded. "She's right. If we come through this trying to be like the others, we'll be crushed."

Sunshine furrows her eyebrows. "Wait, us?"

"Yeah. I'm going for that list too. But In case I don't make it, I want you to know that I'm rooting for you."

"Thanks. You know, it's really hard being the new kid. Taking Gina's rudeness, trying to survive the impossible dance routines, it's a lot to handle when you just get there."

"We've all been there."

"I thought that if I just did what everyone else did, I would be fine but..." Gina's statement really got to her.

"Well I guess that begs the question: Who do you want to be." Preston gets up and walks away. Sunshine ponders the question. Who is she? Some loser transfer student. A badass singer? Or is he just a little girl who's scared of the world? She didn't know.

The next day, Sam was at the shower again, just chilling in hot water, (LOL), until Kurt walked in, wanting to talk to him. He had a conversation about the duet with his dad and decided it was selfish to sing with Sam so he decided to tell him.

"Don't worry, I'm not going to go all Shawshank on you." Kurt jokes.

"This is kind of weird. Guys usually don't talk to each other in here." Sam comments.

"Well, this can't wait. I'm setting you free. You can do your duet with someone else in Glee, someone that the world deems more appropriate."

"Did I do something to offend you?" Sam questions, worried that he offended him.

"No, no, I... It's not you, it's me. You've been honorable, actually, and I wish you the best, but I've realized that I need to sing with someone that matches my passion and my talent level."

"Who's that?"

Kurt deflects the question. "You know, they make special shampoo for color-treated hair." Kurt walks away.

"I don't dye my hair."

"Uh-huh."

Later that day, Rory still has no idea what he's going to do. He was desperate enough to ask Kurt to be his partner, who refused saying that he had another plan in mind: singing alone. This made it impossible for him to compete. Santana and Mercedes already performed, Kurt's going solo, Finn and Rachel are together, so are Mike and Tina. Even Brittany and Artie are teaming up, as weird as it sounds. The only options left are Sam and Quinn, and Sam couldn't stop talking about Quinn at the Lima Bean the other day. Clearly Rory was going in alone for this, but decided to still support Kurt's decision to go alone.

"Okay, guys, so... who is up first today?" Mr. Schue asks.

"Mr. Shue, if I may." Kurt raises his hand.

"You may." Mr. Schue gives Kurt the floor as he sits down.

Kurt stands in front of the others. "As many of you know, I had a duet partner, but due to sensitivities I'd rather not get into at the moment, I have dissolved the partnership."

"Okay, so who are you going to sing a duet with?" Mr. Schue asks.

"Only the most talented member of the Glee Club: Myself." Rory smiles and gives his own awkward applause before being stopped by Sam. "When you're different, when you're special, sometimes you have to get used to being alone. I've asked a few members of the glee club as well as some Cheerios to help me out."

"How can you do a duet by yourself? That's like vocal masturbation or something." Santana remarks, causing Rory to furrow his eyebrows at her as Brittany chuckles.

Kurt ignores her. "I will be doing a number from the seminal classic movie Victor/Victoria. It's a show about embracing both the male and the female sides. Watch and learn, Santana. Hit it."

They had moved to the auditorium to watch Kurt sing. He had warn half a tux and half a tassel suit, with half a mustache and half make up on his face. He also was true to his word and had Brittany, Mike, and Tina help him with the dance element alone with many Cheerios.

Kurt:
'Bout twenty years ago way down in New Orleans
A group of fellers found a new kind of music
And they decided to call it
Jazz

No other sound has what this music has
Before they knew it, it was whizzing 'round the world
The world was ready for a blue kind of music
And now they play it from Steamboat Springs to La Paz

Oh baby

Won't you play me Le Jazz Hot
Maybe, and don't ever let it end
I tell ya friend, it's really somethin' to hear
I can't sit still when there's that rhythm near me

Also, baby, Le Jazz Hot
Maybe, what's holdin' my soul together
Don't know whether it's mornin' or night
Only know it's soundin' right

So come on in
And play me Le Jazz Hot
Baby, cause I love my jazz hot

Before they knew it, it was whizzing 'round the world
The world was ready for a blue kind of music
And now they play it from Steamboat Springs to La Paz

When you play me Le Jazz Hot
Baby, you're holdin' my soul together
Don't know whether it's mornin' or night
Only know it's soundin' right

So come on in and play me Le Jazz Hot
Baby, cause I love my jazz hot

Le Jazz Hot
Le Jazz Hot

As creepy as the outfit looked, it was actually majestic. Rory could only hope that he could be a fraction as confident and amazing as Kurt was today. Everyone cheered for Kurt with glee for his performance with a standing ovation as he stood tall with confidence

Sam had decided to follow through on what he told Rory, and asked Quinn to be his partner, though she was hesitant. She didn't know him so she decided to take him to astronomy class after school while it was empty so he could make his pitch.

Sam was a little distracted by the planet designs above. "I love astronomy. Something about all that space makes my problems seem kind of small. That one's Venus. Planet of love." He pointed, but he pointed at the wrong planet.

"It's actually Mars, planet of war." Quinn corrected.

"Which one are we on?" He tried to be smooth so he can make headway with her.

"Earth." She replied, not exactly into it. "So why don't you come back to it and talk to me about duets. Tell me why I should be singing with you."

"Okay. Well, I want to start off with the choreography. Singing will be easy, so I'll start playing..." Sam straps his guitar and starts strumming chords for the song. "All right, now get behind me. Get behind me." She eventually obliges and stands behind him. "Good. Now grab my hips. And start swaying." She stands for a moment before instead grabbing his shoulder. "All right, now, here's the cool part." He stops playing. "Give me your hand." Quinn does this and he puts the hand on the guitar. "Do you know how to play?" Sam whispers.

"No." Quinn replies.

"All right, it's easy. Just put that finger there. Just like that." Sam guides her and she follows the chords. "Now do it fast back and forth." Quinn does this. Suddenly it's like she's playing the guitar. "There you go." Suddenly after a moment Sam stops playing and looks into Quinn's eyes. He tries to lean in for a kiss but Quinn pulls away.

"No. No, I can't do this. Th year is about me. And don't say that I'm selfish, because you have no idea how much I've given."

"I wasn't... I wasn't gonna..."

"I've been down this path before; I know this feeling." Quinn makes an anxious sigh. "Like, I need you. Duets don't work for me, and I don't need you. What I need is to find a way to keep Santana off my heels." Quinn packs up to leave.

"I'm... I'm sorry..." Sam tries to apologize.

"What I need is to find a way to torture Rachel. And I need to start learning to ignore people. And I'm sorry, I shouldn't... I shouldn't have tried that. I'm sorry. I made a mistake, and, um... I don't want to sing with you." She walks away, and leaves Sam with his feelings. Sam feels like he really messed up big with his crush. He didn't think that a possible epic teenage romance could go this far south.

After Mike received some coaching from Rory, it gave him the courage to ask Tina to take him back as her duet partner, who was more than happy to accept. Tina even chose the perfect song, which would allow him to be able to sing without getting humiliated.

"I don't think I could do this." Mike said while facing away from the Glee Club.

"It's the perfect song for this very situation."

"Whenever you're ready, guys." Mr. Schue reminded them.

"Yeah, hurry up; I needs to get myself to Breadstix." Santana rushes them.

"Don't count on it. I'm mad at you, but you're still so hot." Brittany... compliments... Santana?

"Hey, Mike. You got this. I know you do." Rory encourages his friend. Mike looks back at him and gives him a nod.

Tina takes Mike's hand. "Trust me, you're gonna be great." These words give him strength. He then turns around and begins 'singing'.

Mike (Tina):
See, I really couldn't sing
I could never really sing
What I couldn't do was... (Sing!)
I have trouble with a... (Note!)
It goes all around my... (Throat!)
It's a terrifying... (Thing!)

See, I really couldn't hear which note was lower or was... (Higher!)
Which is why I disappear
If someone says, Let's start a... (Choir!)

Hey, when I begin to... (Squeak!)
It's a cross between a... (Shriek!)
And a quiver or a... (Moan!)
It's a little like a... (Croak!)
Or the record player... (Broke!)
What it doesn't have is... (Tone!)

Oh, I know, you're thinking, What a crazy... (Ding-a-ling)
But I really couldn't... (Sing!)
I could never really... (Sing!)
What I couldn't do was... (Sing!)

Mike (Tina):
But what I lack in pitch
I sure make up in... (Power)
And all my friends say I am perfect for the shower!

Still, I'm terrific at a... (Dance!)
'Cause I'm messing up my... (Pants!)
I'm a birdie on the... (Wing!)
But when I begin to... (Chirp!)
They say, Who's the little... (Twerp!)
Goin' pong instead of... ('Ping'!)

And when Christmas comes, and all my friends go...

Tina with New Directions:
Caroling...

Mike (Tina):
It is so dishearten (Ning)
It is so disquiet (Ting)
It is so discourag (Ging)
Darling, please stop answer (Ring)

See, I really couldn't (Sing)
I could never really (Sing)
What I couldn't do was

New Directions:
Do re mi fa sol la ti do
Do re mi fa sol la ti do
La

Mike (New Directions):
La! (La)
La!

New Directions:
Sing, sing, sing
Sing, sing, sing...

Mike:
Sing!

New Directions:
Sing!

(laughs)

"Wow! Now, that is a duet! Thank you, Tina, for introducing us to the amazing voice of Mike Chang!" They congratulate the group for their efforts. Rory was glad to have contributed to this.

"You tried to kiss her? Major Glee party foul, dude." Finn scolds Sam while they were using the punching bag.

Sam stops punching to talk to him. "Look, I know I shouldn't have. She was just sending me these vibes. And those eyes. Maybe it's for the best she backed out. I mean, if that Puckerman kid ever gets out of jail, he's gonna beat my ass. I'm sure you still have feelings for her, too." Sam walks away to get some weights ready for the bar.

"No, no, no way. I'm with Rachel now. I mean, she's a lot shorter than Quinn and she talks a lot, but I'm in love with her. Look, th-this isn't about dating, dude. This is about you singing with Quinn to raise your musical rep in the group. Look, I'm not saying you're gonna win, but I'm just saying that, you know, even coming in second would go a long way with the rest of the team." Sam perks up after hearing that. Second place? Did he just say that? You know what he's gonna do about it? He's gonna find Quinn, convince her to take him back as her partner and they are gonna work their asses to the bone to win this competition. Screw Finn, he's gonna win.

Sam eventually finds her at the hall and immediately goes to make his pitch. "Hey. Listen, I was totally out of line with you. I promise it won't happen again, though you might have to wear sunglasses whenever we're together."

She slows up to a stop to speak with him. "Good. Because we're gonna have to spend a lot of time together practicing if we're gonna win that dinner at Breadstix." Quinn said with a smirk causing him to smirk back as she leads her to the choir room to practice. He does a fist-pump on the way there.

The next day, the second to last day, Rory still didn't have a partner. He had basically given up at this point. He decided to just do what he can to support his favorite team. He was personally rooting for Sam and Quinn, but right now, his favorite performance would be Kurt. He put the most effort in the performances and he thought that he was amazing despite not doing a duet. Though he didn't particularly have a least favorite until he listened to this. He saw Finn and Rachel wearing religious outfits and they began singing 'With You I'm Born Again'.

Rachel (Finn):
Come give me your sweetness (Ohh, ohh)
Now there's you, there is no weakness (Now there's you, there is no weakness)
Lying safe within your arms
I'm born again (Woman, don't you know with you I'm born again)

Finn and Rachel:
I was half, not whole
In step with none
Reaching through this world
In need of one
Come show me your kindness
In your arms I know I'll find this
(Finn: Woman), don't you know
With you I'm born again
Lying safe with you I'm born again

Everyone was mortified by what just happened. Rory was absolutely disgusted by what just happened. Did they seriously pull this just after spirituality week? This was definitely taking Finn and Rachel down a few points in Rory's book. Mike tried to clap but was quickly stopped by Tina.

"Okay, do I even need to say it?" Mercedes rhetorically asks.

"That was really rude." Sam adds. He chuckles at it, though was still disturbed.

"It was, like, really rude." Tina said, very disturbed.

"I seriously wanted to punch both of you." Quinn said.

"I wasn't, but I was very offended. Definitely not my pick for the vote." Rory informs.

"I have to agree. It's a great duet, but what you guys did with it was... really inappropriate. Your costume choice was a little insensitive." Mr. Schue said, trying to be delicate. "Frankly... I'm disappointed."

"What?!" Rachel said with shock.

"Are you serious? I'm..." Finn said, looking like a performer forgetting his lines.

"Shocked." Rachel helped.

"Shocked." Finn said.

"We're... We're shocked. I-I... I really hope that this doesn't cost us the competition." She said. "Let's sit down. Come." Rachel guides Finn to a seat

Mr. Schue tries to change the subject. "Well, getting back on track, who's next?" Sam and Quinn stand up to do their duet. "All right." The coach sits back down.

"Okay, I just want to say I'm really excited, and that I couldn't have asked for a better partner." Sam said with a smile towards Quinn who looks down and subtly returns it.

Sam:
Do you hear me?
I'm talking to you
Across the water
Across the deep
Blue ocean
Under the open sky,
Oh my
Baby I'm trying

Quinn:
Boy I hear you
In my dreams
I feel you whisper
Across the sea
I keep you with me
In my heart
You make it easier
When life gets hard

Quinn and Sam:
Lucky I'm in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home again
Ooh ooh ooh

Quinn (Sam):
They don't know how long it takes (They don't know how long it takes)

Quinn and Sam:
Waiting for a love like this

Quinn (Sam):
Every time we say goodbye (Every time we say goodbye)

Quinn and Sam:
I wish we had one more kiss
I'll wait for you
I promise you,
I will

Sam:
I, I, I!

Quinn and Sam:
I'm lucky I'm in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home someday
Ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh, ooh

They end the song with joined hands and receive a happy applause, especially from the couples. They loved how wholesome and smooth it was. Rory gave a standing ovation, as he was proud of his best friend for his debut performance at Glee club. Now all he had to worry about was himself. Maybe he can do a solo like Kurt. He does have a good Sesame Street song lined up.

Rory travels the halls feeling down for not being able to find a duet partner and choosing to instead drop out of the game entirely. He basically failed to get anything from this. He failed with Mercedes, with Sam, and now he's alone. Not a great time to me the new guy. Suddenly, when he turns to the corner he sees Artie rolling by with a face of heartbreak. He decided to see what was up and taps Artie's shoulder. "Hey, Artie. What's up mate?"

Artie turns to face the Irish boy. "Oh, hey Rory. Um, nothing's wrong. I'm just practicing for a school play. It's about a boy who fell in love and found out that his girlfriend was using him the whole time and is super depressed about it."

Rory immediately read into this but decided to play along. "Okay, well, that's sad. So what did that 'girlfriend' do to him anyway?" He said, hinting he wanted to help.

Artie, while feeling very down in the dumps felt like he could use a good talking to. "Well, the 'girlfriend' asks the 'boy' to sing with him in a singing competition. And he eventually found out that she was only using him for his voice and had sex with him to seal the deal."

"Whoa." Rory said with a low-key shock.

"Yep. Now that boy is all alone and is dropping out of the competition."

Rory thought for a second and got a good idea. "Hey, you know, I don't have a partner, you don't have a partner, I say we join forces Artie."

Artie shakes his head no. "Look, Rory, you seem nice, but I'm really feeling down right now."

"I know, me too. But this can be good for both of us. You can win this for you. To prove that you don't need her and that you can be proud of yourself without a girlfriend."

Artie thought about it for a minute. The whole reason why he joined the football team was to get Tina back, and now he got his heartbroken again by another girl. His happiness has been determined by love his whole high school life. And it's been taken away from him twice. How is that fair? Why should he have to be tragedy dumped his whole life. First with the chair, and then Tina, and now Brittany. How about he gets a chance to be happy for once, and not have some girl control that. "You know, what? Deal." He shakes Rory's hand. "How do you do with electric R&B?"

Rory shrugs. "I can give it a shot."

"Great. Because I have the perfect song for both of us."

And so we have reached the last day. The day that will say who gets the dinner at breadstix and who walks home in defeat. Mr. Schue holds the coupon in a top hat on the piano and grabs a few pieces of paper.

"Okay, since Artie, Brittany and Rory have dropped out of the race, I guess it's time to-"

Rory raises his hand. "Wait, Mr. Schue. Artie and I have formed a fellowship, and we have a song to sing."

Mr. Schue smiles at this. "Oh, then show us what you got." He walks to take a seat but Rory stops him.

"For this to work, it's probably best if you move to the auditorium. We have something sick lined up." Artie smirks as they move to the auditorium.

The duo wear costumes with Rory wearing a black shirt with a white jacket and pants and Artie wearing a black hat, a red communist shirt, a black vest, black pants, and a gold pocket watch and both of them wearing white shoes. They reach the stage and say hit it to the band who plays electronic R&B with lights sparking in the background along with strobe lights.

Artie (Rory):
Baby, are you down, down, down, down, down?
Down, down
Even if the sky is fallin' down
Down, down (Ooh-ooh-ooh)

Artie:
You oughta know
Tonight is the night to let it go
Put on a show
I wanna see how you lose control

Rory:
So leave it behind
'Cause we have a night to get away
So come on and fly with me
As we make our great escape
So why don't we run away?

Artie and Rory (Artie):
Baby, don't worry (Away)
You are my only (Oh-ooh)
You won't be lonely (No)
Even if the sky is fallin' down
You'll be my only (Yeah)
No need to worry (No)
Baby, are you down, down, down, down, down?
(Down, down) Woo!
Baby, are you down, down, down, down, down?
(Down, down) Mmh, you down?
Even if the sky is fallin' down

Artie:
Like she 'posed to be, she gets down low for me
Down like her temperature, 'cause to me she's zero degree
Don't you ever leave the side of me, indefinitely, not probably
And honestly, I'm down like the economy
Yeah!

{The choreography is simple but they did their best with what they had and amazed the crowd with their song}

Rory (and Artie):
Baby, don't worry
You are my only
You won't be lonely (Whoa!)
Even if the (sky is fallin' down)
You'll be my only (No-ooh)
No need to worry (No-ooh)
Baby, are you down, down, down, down, down? (And the sky is fallin' down)
(Down, down) Mmh, down (Down, down)
Baby, are you down, down, down, down, down? (Are you down, are you down too?)
(Down, down) Ooh, no-ooh, and the sky is fallin' down

Artie and Rory:
Even if the sky is fallin' down

Artie (Rory):
Ooh, no-ooh, and the sky is fallin' down
(C3)

They received a standing ovation from the club and they smiled excitedly before bowing and giving each other a double high five before Rory guides Artie off the stage.

"Alright. Good job you too. Anyway, I brought the ballots so let's just vote here guys."

Rory grabs a ballot and votes for himself and Artie as does his partner.

Quinn and Sam do the same to themselves.

After they return their papers to Mr. Schue, he reads them all and looks up to declare the winners.

"Well, even though it looks like just about everyone voted for themselves- even those who didn't compete-" He looks at Brittany for that one. "-we do have a winner." He holds the coupon out. "And the winner is...by two votes...Sam and Quinn." He holds it out to them.

"What? Screw that! I want my stix!" Santana gets up to tackle Quinn and Sam as they walk up to get the gift card but is stopped by Mercedes.

"Ooh, let it go. Let go. Let it go!" She said.

"Unbelievable." She shakes her head.

Meanwhile, at Carmel High, Sunshine walks down the halls to look for Gina. She really needed to talk to her about yesterday and what she said. She eventually found her locker applying make-up and decided to speak. "Hey." Gina turns to her and rolls her eyes.

"Not now DeVito, I have a date later, and I have to look fabulous, so make it quick."

"I just wanted to say... you were right." Sunshine reluctantly admits.

"You're going to have to be a little more specific. I'm always right." She said while using her eye pencil.

Sunshine sighs in annoyance. "I mean about earlier. You were right, I can't win by being just another cog in a machine, I have to be the machine. Which is why I am going to be a little more outgoing so I can prove that I can be the best, and to show them that I'm a singer, and I'm a pretty darn good one. So... thank you."

Gina smirks. "Well, well well, looks like you learned something after all. Maybe I can make a singer out of you yet."

"Does that mean that you won't be mean anymore?"

"And lose the charm? No. But what I can do is be your dance coach. I'm one of the best dancers in V.A. and trust me, you need it. Then we can talk about friendship."

"Thanks. You know, you aren't as bad as I thought you were." Sunshine smiles.

"Well, mutual feelings." They share a smile before high-fiving and walking to the auditorium together.

Rory was getting everything back in his locker when he got tapped on the shoulder by someone. He turns and sees Mercedes standing there.

"Hey. I wanted to say sorry for rejecting you this week. You are a nice kid. I just really needed to win."

"It's all grand. I'm happy I got to sing with Artie. We're gonna have a hang out this weekend, and he's gonna teach me how to play Halo." Rory chuckles at the idea.

She offers a laugh as well. "Well, I wanted to see if you wanted to hang out. Maybe... we can go to Breadstix." She asks. Rory widens his eyes in shock. "I know we didn't get the gift card, but you know, you're sweet, and... I want to hang out with you." Rory stood there speechless. She came to the conclusion that he was against it. "Or not. If you don't wanna go that's fine."

"Oh. Oh no. I mean yes! I mean." Rory takes a breath for a moment. "It would be an honor." He offers his arm, which she smiles at and takes as they walk together to Breadstix.

Later that night, Sam was enjoying a nice none-date dinner with Quinn. They may not be dating, but he didn't care. He was just happy to have some one-on-one time with her. She was amazing.

"You know, I hear they don't even make these fresh. They fly them in frozen from some factory in the Dominican Republic." Quinn informed him.

"I once caught some pretty sweet waves down in the Dominican. Hey, hey, hey." Sam quotes for comedy.

"Uh-uh." She just nods and gets back to eating.

"Come on. It's my Matthew McConaughey impression. Come on." Sam said with a smile, trying to come off as charming, but making no success.

"Does that work on the girls where you're from? The impressions, the bad jokes, the Nav'i?" Quinn asks him.

"Uh, I don't know. I don't know. I went to an all-boys boarding school." Sam explains.

Quinn nods. "Makes sense."

"It must be hard. I think if I went through what you went through last year, I would have transferred to a school on the moon or something, out of embarrassment. Okay, that-that didn't come out right. I mean, you're really brave to come back like you have. I don't judge you or anything. I know what it's like to have a... secret that you're ashamed of."

"Oh, holy crap. So you... So you are gay?" She whispers in assumption.

Sam laughs. "What? No. Not at all. When I found out I was moving here, I wanted to seem cool, you know? Figured if I looked like Swayze in Point Break, people might think I was a surfer or something. I didn't think it through very clearly. So... I put lemon juice in my hair." They share a laugh. "I would have gotten away with it, if it hadn't been for Kurt and his sixth sense."

"I think it looks cute." She compliments.

"Really?" He asks and receives a nod. They laugh again. Quinn grabs the gift card and puts it away.

"What are you doing?" Sam asks.

"We're not using that. You're paying." Quinn tells him.

"Why?"

"Because a gentleman always pays on the first date."

She tells her, signaling to him that she is open for dating. He smiles from ear to ear at this. They smiled and put their hands together, not noticing Rory at the distance with Mercedes watching them with a smirk before getting back to his conversation with Mercedes.

Sunshine sees a bunch of her teammates at the bulletin board, including Preston and Gina, who were looking in earnest. Sunshine raises her eyebrow and walks up to them. "Hey, what's going on?"

"Coach Goolsby just put up the short list for who's moving up for the soloist position." Preston tells her with wide eyes. Sunshine looks at the crowd and realizes that this is it. This is the moment that decides if she can sing on the grand stage, if she can show everyone that she is not just some noob. She maneuvers around them with a look of determination with the help of her small size. She soon makes it through them and takes a look at who's left and has a look of shock on her face.

Thanks for Reading guys. I'm sorry that I didn't include as much screen time for Rory as I hoped, but I hope you like it. Also in case you're wondering, yes I am including Sam moments since he's a main character of this story. But don't worry, it won't always be the same script. I will have the occasional change. And I promise you I won't make it so that Rory gets a song every episode. I will treat him like characters should be treated on Glee. Every other episode he gets something appropriate to him and he won't get bias. Note that he will be getting a group song at Sectionals. Stay tuned to find out what.

Drift Out!
