The warm, late afternoon sun was dipping toward the horizon, casting an amber glow across Duel Academy. Jaden Yuki, ever the optimist, sat on the edge of a rocky cliff, fishing pole in hand. Beside him, his friends, Syrus Truesdale and Tyranno Hassleberry, chatted and laughed, occasionally glancing at the lazy waves crashing against the shore below.

"I dunno, Jay," Syrus said, squinting at his empty fishing line. "I don't think fish like me. Every time I get a bite, they seem to slip away!"

Hassleberry chuckled, leaning back on his hands. "That's 'cause you're too easy on 'em, Private Syrus! You gotta reel them in like a soldier. Show 'em who's boss!"

Jaden grinned, adjusting his cap. "Syrus is right, though. I've been out here forever, and I still haven't caught anything. Maybe they're too smart for us today."

Behind them, Bastion Misawa and Chazz Princeton sat, each with their own reasons for being less than enthused about the fishing trip.

Chazz scoffed, folding his arms. "This is a waste of time. There's no strategy here, no tactics. Just waiting around for some fish to get caught. Honestly, I'd rather be anywhere else."

Bastion nodded in agreement. "I must admit, I find it rather unscientific. But it's peaceful, I suppose. Sometimes, even a duelist needs a break from calculations and formulas."

"Hey, come on, guys!" Jaden replied, turning to them with his usual bright smile. "It's all about taking it easy sometimes, y'know? Not everything has to be a duel or a battle."

"Maybe you're right," Chazz muttered. "But don't expect me to start enjoying it."

Just then, Atticus Rhodes approached the group, shading his eyes from the sunlight. He seemed unusually relaxed, humming a tune as he joined them. "Mind if I join, gentlemen?"

"Atticus! Of course!" Jaden said, waving him over. "We were just trying our luck. Not much biting, though."

Atticus chuckled, dropping down beside them. "Fishing, huh? It's kinda nice out here. Peaceful. Reminds me of simpler days before things got complicated."

Chazz raised an eyebrow. "What are you talking about? You still act like life's one big party."

Atticus shrugged, a glimmer of seriousness in his eyes. "Yeah, but sometimes there's more going on than people see. I think we could all use a breather every once in a while."

As they settled into the quiet, each lost in their thoughts or idle conversation, a sudden, piercing scream echoed from the direction of the campus. All at once, the peaceful atmosphere shattered. Jaden shot up, gripping his fishing rod tightly.

"Did you guys hear that?" Jaden asked, his voice tense.

"I definitely heard it, Sarge," Hassleberry replied, standing and scanning the distance.

Syrus shivered, dropping his fishing line. "That… sounded like a scream. Like someone's in trouble."

In the distance, smoke began to rise from the direction of the Obelisk Blue girls' dormitory. Atticus's eyes widened in horror. "No… that's the girls' dorm. And Alexis… she could still be in there!"

Suddenly, Jasmine and Mindy, Alexis's closest friends, came running down the path toward them. They were out of breath, panic written all over their faces.

"Jaden! Atticus!" Jasmine called, struggling to catch her breath. "The… the girls' dorm… it's on fire!"

Mindy, eyes filled with fear, nodded quickly. "And Alexis… she's still inside! She went back for something and hasn't come out yet."

Jaden's heart skipped a beat. "What?! Alexis is still in there?"

Atticus's face turned ashen. "Alexis… my sister…"

Hassleberry immediately jumped into action, already sprinting toward the campus. "Come on, soldiers! We've gotta move!"

Without a second thought, Jaden took off after Hassleberry, with Syrus, Chazz, and the others following closely. Atticus, panic tightening his features, was just ahead of them, his mind racing with worry.

As they ran, Jaden shouted over his shoulder, trying to steady his voice. "Don't worry, Atticus! We're gonna get her out. Alexis is tough. She'll hold on until we get there!"

Atticus, gritting his teeth, nodded. "She better… she's my little sister. She has to be okay…"

Chazz kept his eyes locked forward, his usual bravado replaced with grim determination. "No one's going down today. Not if we have anything to say about it."

The closer they got to the dorm, the thicker the smoke became, filling the air with a sharp, acrid scent. Flames licked at the edges of the building, climbing higher with each passing second, casting an eerie glow against the darkening sky.

The Obelisk Blue girls' dorm was a blazing inferno, smoke pouring from the windows as flames leaped higher. Students and faculty crowded around the building, desperately trying to keep the fire from spreading while frantically counting heads to ensure everyone was safe. But amidst the chaos, one voice cut through everything.

"Help! Someone, please help me!" Alexis's panicked voice carried out from inside the building.

Jaden froze, his heart pounding. "Alexis!"

Without a second thought, Jaden rushed forward, ignoring the shouts from his friends.

"Jaden, stop!" Syrus called, reaching out to grab him.

Atticus's face went pale, and he stepped forward. "Jaden, wait! Be careful!"

Chazz rolled his eyes, though his voice wavered loudly. "Idiot!… he's going to get himself killed!?."

Jaden barely noticed them as he ran past Chancellor Sheppard and the security guards. The heat hit him immediately as he entered the building, flames roaring all around. Covering his mouth with his sleeve, he sprinted down the hallway, searching for Alexis and he found her Room.

"Alexis! Where are you?" he shouted, his voice barely audible over the roar of the flames.

"Jaden!" Her voice was faint but desperate, coming from her room. He turned the corner and finally saw her, struggling to move through the thick smoke.

Without hesitation, Jaden dashed toward her, wrapping his arms around her. "I've got you!" he said, pulling her toward the exit. They were close, only a few feet from the door, when a loud crack echoed above them, and flames surged across the doorway, trapping him inside.

Jaden pushed Alexis, shoving her into the hallway, away from the fire. "Go! Get out of here, now!"

Alexis stumbled back, turning around just in time to see the flames close in behind her, sealing Jaden inside the room.

"No!" she screamed, reaching out for him.

Jaden, trapped on the other side of the flames, tried to reassure her, his voice calm despite the fear in his eyes. "Alexis, it's okay! Just go! I'll find another way out."

She shook her head, tears streaming down her face. "I'm not leaving you, Jaden! I can't just—"

He cut her off, his voice rising. "There's no time! You need to get out of here while you can!"

Alexis was sobbing now, her fists clenched as she struggled against the urge to run back into the flames. "Jaden, please… please don't do this!"

His expression softened for a moment, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "It'll be fine. I'll see you outside, okay?"

"Jaden—" she choked out.

"Go!" he shouted, his voice filled with urgency.

With a final, tearful look, Alexis turned and ran down the hallway, her heart breaking with each step. She stumbled outside, her friends rushing to her side as Jasmine and Mindy held her close.

Atticus immediately noticed her tear-streaked face. "Alexis! Are you alright!? Where's Jaden?"

Alexis struggled to speak through her tears. "He… he's still in there. He made me leave. He's trapped!"

Before they could process her words, a massive explosion shook the dorm, the force of the blast knocking them back. They shielded their faces as flames and debris filled the air, the fire consuming the building.

"JADEN!" They screamed, Alexis collapsing to her knees as the others looked on in horror.

Through the smoke, a figure staggered out, covered in ash and blood. It was Jaden, his clothes torn, his face bruised and bleeding. He took a few unsteady steps before collapsing to the ground, unconscious.

"Jaden!" Syrus yelled, running to his friend's side, the others following close behind.

They gathered around him, horror etched on their faces as they saw the blood and burns on his skin. His breathing was faint, barely perceptible.

"He… he's not breathing!" Bastion gasped, his hands trembling.

The medics rushed over, loading Jaden onto a stretcher and carrying him to an ambulance.

Alexis watched in silence, her body shaking as tears streamed down her face. "He… he saved me. He risked everything for me…"

Syrus, his face filled with guilt, shook his head. "Jaden… why did you do this…"

Chazz clenched his fists and with a small tears in his eyes, his voice barely a whisper. "You better pull through, Slacker. You reckless fool…"

As the ambulance sped away, they all stood there, silently praying that Jaden would survive, the flames from the dorm still casting a haunting glow around them.

The group gathered in the sterile white waiting room of the Duel Academy hospital building, the air heavy with anxiety and silence. The events of the night still replayed in their minds: the flames, the explosion, and Jaden's last brave act pushing Alexis to safety, risking his life to save her. Now, they were left with nothing but questions and fears as they waited for news.

Alexis sat between Atticus and Syrus, her head buried in her hands, tears streaming down her face. No one had said much since they arrived, each lost in their own thoughts. Jasmine and Mindy stayed close to Alexis, their faces pale with worry. Chazz paced back and forth across the room, his frustration and fear evident with each step, while Bastion and Hassleberry sat in quiet, tense silence.

After what felt like hours, the door to the waiting room opened, and a doctor stepped in, his face calm yet solemn as he looked at the students gathered there.

"Are you here for Jaden Yuki?" he asked gently.

Everyone immediately turned to face him, the tension in the room becoming almost unbearable.

"Yes, we're his friends," Atticus replied, his voice tense. "How… how is he, Doctor?"

The doctor took a deep breath, his expression serious. "Jaden suffered severe injuries due to the fire. He inhaled a significant amount of smoke, and he sustained multiple burns and lacerations. He also has a head injury from when he was thrown by the blast. I won't lie—it was very close. He almost didn't make it."

Alexis let out a gasp, her face paling as Atticus placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. Syrus bit his lip, trying to hold back tears, while Hassleberry clenched his fists, anger mixed with sadness in his eyes.

The doctor continued, "Jaden is currently in a coma. Right now, he's stable, but… we can't say when or if he'll wake up."

Those words hit like a punch to the gut. The reality of it sank in, and Alexis's heart broke all over again.

"But… will he recover?" Syrus asked, his voice small, clinging to a shred of hope.

The doctor hesitated. "There's a chance he may wake up, but we don't know when. With comas, it's unpredictable. It could be days, weeks… even longer. The brain needs time to heal from trauma, and right now, all we can do is wait and hope for the best."

Alexis was barely able to hold herself together. She felt Atticus wrap an arm around her, but the weight of the doctor's words was too much. She buried her face against her brother, her body trembling as she fought to hold back her sobs.

"Can we see him?" Bastion asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

The doctor nodded. "Yes, but I must warn you—Jaden's condition is fragile. He's on life support and heavily bandaged. I don't want any of you to be shocked by what you see. It can be difficult to see someone you care about in such a state."

The friends exchanged glances, bracing themselves for what lay ahead. One by one, they followed the doctor down a quiet hallway, their footsteps echoing in the silence.

They finally reached Jaden's room. The doctor opened the door and stepped aside, allowing them to enter. As they walked in, the steady beeping of the heart monitor filled the room, a haunting reminder of Jaden's fragile state.

Jaden lay motionless on the hospital bed, his face pale, his body covered in bandages. An oxygen mask covered his face, and various tubes and wires connected him to the machines that were keeping him alive. His eyes were closed, and he looked peaceful, almost as if he were simply sleeping. But the sight was enough to bring fresh tears to their eyes.

Alexis took a step closer, her hand trembling as she reached out to touch Jaden's arm. The warmth of his skin brought her a faint sense of relief, a reminder that he was still with them, even if he couldn't respond.

"Oh, Jaden…" she whispered, her voice breaking. "Why did you have to be so reckless?"

Syrus wiped his eyes, his gaze never leaving Jaden's face. "He saved you, Alexis. He risked everything… just to make sure you were safe."

Alexis clenched her fists, her tears falling onto the bed. "I never wanted this… I never wanted him to get hurt because of me."

Atticus placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Alexis, this isn't your fault. Jaden made his choice. He wouldn't have done it if he didn't care about you."

Chazz stood by the door, his usual arrogance replaced with a somber expression. "He always thinks he's some kind of hero… always rushing into danger without thinking. And look where it got him…"

Bastion put a hand on Chazz's shoulder. "That's just who he is, Chazz. Jaden's always been willing to risk himself for others."

Hassleberry nodded, his eyes full of admiration. "He's got the heart of a soldier, that one. We just have to believe he'll pull through, just like he always does."

The group fell into silence, each lost in their own thoughts as they watched over their friend. They stayed by Jaden's side, taking turns holding his hand, whispering words of encouragement, hoping that somehow he could hear them.

After a while, the nurse stepped in, gently reminding them that visiting hours were ending. Reluctantly, they each said their goodbyes, promising to return the next day.

As they walked out of the hospital, the weight of uncertainty hung over them. Each of them carried the same hope in their hearts—that Jaden would wake up, that he would recover and return to them.

But for now, all they could do was wait.
