Chapter 30; Crosswalks
The walk to the hospital was fairly awkward. At least, in Silver's eyes. Aizawa stared ahead with his hands in his pockets while Mirio held an understandingly excited smile. He also looked a little nervous, that was not a normal look for Mirio. Izuku on the other hand was a nervous wreck, fiddling with his hands and all. Silver stared at Izuku, mostly deep in his thoughts. What would he say to Nighteye? Would Nighteye be mad…? Should Silver explain the whole…alien thing to him? Breaking his gaze from his nervous friend, Silver looked towards the sky. It still hadn't rained…but it was going to soon.
'Hey Izuku?' Silver thought to his nervous friend, making Izuku visibly jump and look at Silver, 'Man you're nervous aren't you?' The psychic smiled a little sheepishly and Deku's eyes widened.
'Yeah…a little…' The Emerald freshmen was more than just a little nervous. Silver could feel the anxiety flooding through Izuku and into his system. 'Is something wrong? Is there a villain? Mephiles again?!' Izuku got a little tense and looked at Silver with a serious expression.
Silver stuck to staring at the sidewalk, 'No, no villains or anything. I just saw you were nervous…and I was a little worried myself. What do I say to Nighteye…?' The hedgie-boy frowned a little, his eyes glossed slightly and expression distant while using his Telepathy, 'Do you think we can trust him with the truth?'
The psychic could feel Izuku's emotions and nerves back with the thought, 'Well, I don't know that coming up with a lie is the best idea. This is a heavy situation, a wrong move could come off as a threat.' Izuku grew a little more thoughtful, 'But the truth might also scare him…there is no guarantee he will take it in a good way. It does kinda sound scary knowing there is a powerful psychic alien hedgehog just wandering around.'
'Way to reduce my worry and help give me an answer.' Silver thought bitterly, Izuku was right though. There was no guarantee anyone would take it in a good way. Everyone reacted differently, plus, different thought processes and stuff. Nighteye could easily see Silver as a threat, and he would have every right to. It's a lot of information to process all at once, and Silver didn't have the correct words to prove he was innocent no matter what. He didn't exactly have proof either…anyone could just say he was a hero to infiltrate them…but he wasn't. He didn't know how to prove his intentions without coming off as evil. That made Silver start thinking…what were his intentions? He came to this planet against his will, all he has done was just go along with the ride.
He was stuck on a foreign planet, going to a hero school. Silver had to have some sort of motive right? Had he ever really thought about it? What was he trying to accomplish being stuck here anyway? Silver's memories ran over his time at UA, the smiles he shared, and the blood he shed. He was working hard, but in this foreign place…why did he want to be a hero here? Well, Silver knew he couldn't just sit back and watch others suffer, so if that meant attending a school to help, then he would. Why did he want to help…? …sure, he didn't get the BEST welcome to his world, but they HAD been kind to him. Silver wanted to see this world flourish, he wanted to see the smiles of the townspeople and the laughter of children.
He wanted to help his class reach their dreams. Silver just wanted Earth to be a happy place. But what was his job on this planet? Well, Silver sighed to himself, clearly it was to deal with the mess he had caused. Put balance and order back into the world he shifted in his presence. To fix the chaos he caused, to seal Mephlies away, and to put this reality back to how it was before he stepped foot on it. And hopefully, have it even better. Silver wanted to help, he didn't know how much trouble he truly caused in this world, but he wanted to fix it. The telepath knew what he wanted was to see this world bright and happy. Silver thought about his world, the Chao playing in the gardens, the bustle of Station Square, and the sunsets in Solana. Amy dragged him around and Cream asked to play tea parties…deep down…a little voice whispered.
I just want to go home.
Silver did miss his home…but it felt so selfish to feel that way. He caused Earth a lot of disarray, and that was something he needed to fix. Thinking about his home, how far away he was, knowing there was a chance he could never see it again...it made him sick. Silver didn't know why, but it made his stomach churn and his throat dry. Physically feeling sick from how badly he longed to go home…but knew there was always that chance…that he never could. He never even got to say goodbye…it felt like some dark shadow was squeezing his heart and mind. Silver took a deep breath, the psychic needed to stop getting sidetracked. How could he prove to Nighteye that he meant well?
'Silver…?' Silver turned to jump a little, he completely forgot he had a mind link up. Though Izuku didn't hear Silver's filtered-out thoughts…he most definitely felt Silver's feelings… '...you don't…pay a lot of attention to the real world when you're using telepathy…do you?' The psychic grew confused, and Izuku blatantly chose to ignore the sad feelings Silver accidentally let bubble up. Instead, the emerald trainee was asking a completely unrelated question. (A\N; Yes, they can filter thoughts. Just like a normal conversation, they can pick and choose what's said in the link. Well, at least the sorta link Silver tends to use. That way he isn't invading privacy or overwhelmed with thoughts. However, memories and feelings can't be filtered and will be seen and felt through the link. Hopefully, I can explain it more later on more clearly-)
'Uh ...I try to…? It's kinda hard to keep such a split focus though…why?' Once Silver thought back his response, he heard Izuku start laughing. That laughter drew him back to reality and out of the depths of Telepathy. The psychic blinked a couple of times before jumping backward. "Ack-!" He was unnaturally close to a light post.
Aizawa cleared his throat and Silver jumped again, "Now that you're back down to Earth, Space Cadet, do you mind answering the question?" The freshman in question rubbed his forehead, why did he have a bruise…?
Mirio looked a little concerned, "Uh…" Silver shook away the pain, "What question?" Izuku, fully knowing Silver was fine, was trying to stifle another laugh.
"I was just asking if you had a sense of humor," Mirio smiled, yet he still looked a little concerned, "You ok though? You kinda spaced off and hit the light pole and just stared at it. Did you bump into love or something?" He joked lightheartedly and Silver's face began to burn.
He didn't know why his face felt so hot, and his ear too, but he felt embarrassed, "O-Oh, I'm fine! J-Just a little uh…thoughtful I guess." Silver tugged at the hem of his shirt, man, Izuku's laughter was making him feel weird.
His embarrassment clashed weirdly with Izuku's amusement, making both teens feel fairly weird. Izuku, though, was trying very hard to suppress his giggles. It probably did look a little silly watching Silver completely dissociate from reality and just stare at a street light. Letting out an awkward chuckle, Silver's ears burned and bent back.
"Humor? I-I…I dunno…maybe?"
His amber eyes turned back to the sidewalk hearing Izuku's highly amused thoughts. Aizawa took the initiative to begin walking, making all the students trail behind. 'Stop laughing…' Silver thought to Izuku through embarrassment. 'I'm serious, what do I tell Nighteye?' The psychic tried to focus on reality while maintaining the link and listening to both Izuku in thought and vocal.
The trainee nodded, focusing back on the task at hand. 'Right…probably the truth. I don't think he has a choice. I can text All Might to let him know and see what he thinks…but I think Nighteye deserves the truth.' Silver's body slowly slid into the autopilot again, 'You saved his life, or at least delayed his death. You fought hard to save Eri and he saw that. I think…I think he'll understand. I don't think Nighteye will see you as a threat.' The thought was comforting, but the ivory hedgie-boy was worried that it wasn't necessarily true, 'He might be suspicious. But I mean it is kinda crazy to hear at first, it sounds so far-fetched until you line up the dots. Plus-' Izuku's train of thought came to a stop, 'SILVER!" Izuku's thoughts overlapped with his shriek in reality.
Silver felt himself being yanked backward harshly and fairly quickly as reality dropped back into focus. There was a light pole to his right with a crosswalk button, a crosswalk in front of him and the light for the walk was red. The road was just barely wet, it had begun to lightly rain. Just by the back of his coat, Silver felt his feet slip as he was yanked back onto the sidewalk. His eyes widened as a red car sped past yet the moment seemed so slow, his glove brushing against it as it zoomed by and he was pulled back. Adrenaline raced through him with the close call, the psychic stumbled onto the safety of the sidewalk. Silver's breath sped up a little, that was…way too close for comfort-! The almost-road-meat teen glanced behind him to see who his hero had been.
Of course, it was a fairly keen Aizawa who had grabbed him just in time, "What…were you thinking?" His tone was sharp and cold, his expression just as rough, "You do not cross the road until the light says walk. Even then, the road must be clear. The move you just pulled will end in a mess stained on the roads." Silver shrunk into himself a little, his ears pinning against his head at the harsh scolding, "Did you leave your brain in your shoes?" Erasure Head hissed as he pulled the psychic towards him. The teacher had every right to be mad, it was from a place of fearful concern for the safety of his student. "We will wait right here until you find your brain and common sense. We will not move until you have them both functioning again."
The teacher let go of Silver's coat, growling at the student in front of him. Silver's head dipped in shame, Izuku looking fairly fretful as he felt the psychic's adrenaline slowly leaving them both. Mirio, taking a kinder approach than the teacher, walked over and put a hand on Silver's shoulder. The ivory-haired boy looked up at Mirio.
"You're sure you're ok?" The Hedgie-boy nodded, thinking Mirio was asking if he was physically fine, "…ok, then can you tell us what distracted you? You didn't realize your surroundings. So what's going on? Something bothering you?" Mirio asked with a kind smile, yet concern scrunched his eyebrows closer.
Silver's face grew a little warm as he looked down, "I-I'm sorry…" He fiddled with the bottom of his scarf, "I was using Telepathy with Izuku…I saw he was nervous and I was trying to help him calm down…" Izuku nodded, reassuring Silver's explanation, "I thought it would be good to get some Telepathy practice in. Doing it for more mundane things means more practice time so I can handle it better…" Mirio 'oh'ed at Silver's explanation.
Aizawa was still grouchy. Silver almost got run over, but the teacher kept his opinion quiet for the moment, "Ohh, ok, I getcha." Mirio nodded, closing his eyes for a moment in thought, "This always happens? Like, when you use Telepathy, is it hard to keep note of the real world around you?" A little bit of relief washed over him knowing Mirio understood how the issue occurred.
"Well, yeah." Silver nodded, "For longer periods at least. If I use Telepathy for short bursts of time then I can balance everything well enough…but I need to get better at handling it for longer periods." The psychic sighed and poked at his gloves, "I tend to auto-pilot when I use Telepathy for too long…it's hard to keep focus on everything all at once…so my brain tends to focus on the brain things and ignores reality."
"Probably not a good thing to practice by a road then, hmm?" Mirio laughed a little, his voice a little kinder as he understood Silver's situation. At least, he kinda understood it. He couldn't ever FULLY understand the struggles of a psychic, "I get where you are coming from with this, but let's keep the Space Cadet practice on UA grounds. It's a lot safer to practice things that are harder to control with Pros around." Mirio put a hand on Silver's hand and smiled widely, "We need your full attention when being around a road, 'kay?" The ivory boy in question nodded sheepishly, "We could also use some conversation! This group is a bit tense!"
The walk light buzzed a little, alerting the heroes it was ok to cross. After Aizawa checked both ways (the students mirroring his actions), they all crossed quickly. As they all walked along the sidewalk, Aizawa finally spoke, "Telepathy hmm?" Silver completely forgot he didn't explain his in-depth quirk to his teacher.
"…Be more careful next time…"
They walked in dead silence. The light rain pitter-patter dripped into his hair and onto his face. The scent of rain was heavy in the air, crisp and soothing. His metal boots clinked along the sidewalk while everyone else's shoes patted along muffledly. Silver adjusted his scarf a little. The breeze began to pick a little, nipping at the tips of his ears and his cheeks. Silver gently let the velvet scarlet scarf droop along his shoulder. The world was darkened by the rain, almost as if it felt as shameful as Silver did. The psychic looked at his gloves. Small drops of rain make tiny spots on the gloves darken in color. His ears dipped. Silver felt like he ruined the mood by being so careless. He brought his hands together, rubbing them to create friction for warmth. Leafs fluttered down as rain gently took over the environment. He could have watched the dew drip down from the leaves for hours.
Putting his warmer hands on his ears, Silver smiled softly. He couldn't deny this world was beautiful. It was so much like his own. Rubbing his cold ears softly with his thumbs, the psychic tossed a glance to Izuku. The link was still up, hearing Izuku's thoughts absently fill Silver's head with little meaning. The feeling was more steamed from interest or curiosity. Izuku stared at the sidewalk, deep in thought about Silver's telepathy. Sad the emerald boy was too busy to enjoy the light rain. Yawning slightly, Silver closed his eyes as his body expressed the exhaustion the link was causing. Seeing their mental conversation was over, the Telepath took down the link. Finally, once again his thoughts and feelings were undisturbed. The raindrops hooked cutely onto the fabric of his winter coat. Silver grinned, imagining if the little droplets could talk.
'Fred! Your here too!' One droplet would say hanging onto the scarf's fabric as another droplet landed into view.
'Linda! Hey! Long time no see!' The new droplet would reply, bobbing a little as Silver walked.
The first droplet had a much tinier one next to it, 'I got a baby just now! Isn't she the cutest little droplet ever? I'm gonna name her…Petal. Because one day, she will live on a Petal.' Silver smiled, enjoying the imaginative droplet family he was creating.
'That's a beautiful name, Linda! Petal, it's perfect! You're going to be a wonderful Mother!' The husky gentle voice of the second droplet said in Silver's head, 'I'll be the funny uncle!'
Such a happy imaginary droplet family. The psychic could imagine a whole future for them. Petal growing up, Fred being the fatherly figure, and Linda very persistent Petal finds a good husband. He could imagine the little droplet family sticking close, no matter the struggle. Family photos and graduations. Life lessons and cupcakes. Silver grinned softly, staring happily at the droplets on his scarf. Then, the unthinkable happened. Another droplet crushed and mended with Fred! The whole happy future between the droplets came crashing down, breaking Silver's heart. In a matter of seconds, he had grown so attached to the little droplet family. Only for Mother Nature to murder Fred. How cruel. (A\N; Me; I'm so creative at 2 AM! Also Me at 2 AM; Writing about water droplet families-)
"No…Fred…" Silver mumbled in heartbreak, completely forgetting that he was around other people. It was quite weird without context. It was weird WITH context.
"What?"
Silver tensed a little, feeling embarrassment heat his face and ears slightly. Izuku looked a little confused, and rightfully concerned, at Silver. Mirio even tossed a glance behind his shoulder. The embarrassed psychic gripped his ears a little tighter.
"N-Nothing." He quickly replied.
Mirio turned back around, Izuku's eyes meanwhile trailed up to see Silver holding his ears, "Is something wrong? Do your ears hurt?" The worried counterpart asked as Silver shook his head.
Rubbing the backs of his fuzzy ears, Silver replied, "No, just cold." The emerald-haired teen nodded with a hum of understanding, "And wet." It felt weird having rain go into his ears…
Aizawa huffed, "We're here." He mumbled gruffly.
The pathway got a little more wide and clean as they approached the hospital. Once under the onning, Silver shook himself like a dog to rid of the unwanted rainwater. Sadly, that meant saying a final goodbye to the rest of the little droplet family. Linda and Petal flew off his scarf as he shook. Mirio laughed watching Silver shake, he probably should have brought a raincoat. Or something with a hood at least. Izuku shook a little as well but in a more refined manner. Mirio however, didn't care about tracking rainwater into the hospital. As long as he wasn't dripping wet of course. He didn't want anyone to slip. Aizawa pulled open the doors and filed the children inside, each of the hero students taking a polite moment to clean their shoes off a bit before entering the sterile building. Once inside, Silver frowned at the smells.
Fairly bland and chemical. He much preferred the outside rain. Someone needed to light a candle in here or something. Smell-wise, it was equivalent to a stiff office board meeting. The smooth title below made Silver's boots echo loudly in the quiet chamber. The strong clink clank clink clank of his boots against the tile made him feel a little confident even. Silver had no idea why, but it was a satisfying sound. As the small group made their way to the front desk, Silver took the time to soak in his surroundings. Most of the walls were a lightly saturated color if not straight-up white. Everything was smooth and crisp, prim and proper. There were a few people in the waiting chairs, reading books or watching videos quietly on their phones. The desk lady smiled as Aizawa and the three hero students approached. Her space looked cozy. Little knick-knacks were placed strategically on her desk. Notebooks and pens laid perfectly in range. Her computer was straight in front of her, the keys clicking away as she typed.
"Hello, how may I help you today?" She asked in a surprisingly heavy accented voice. Silver wasn't sure what kinda of accent she had, she pronounced a lot of the words nicely, but he could tell she still had that accent. Octopus tentacles trailing behind her, what a cool quirk!
"Visiting. Mirai Sasaki."
The lady began clicking the keys on the keyboard, "Is your name Mirai Sasaki, or is the person you are visiting?"
"Visiting." Aizawa again replied quickly with a brisk huff.
"And what's your name? How many people are visiting today?" She asked politely as her tentacles began writing something down as she typed.
"Shota Aizawa." The teacher waited, making sure she had it down before he continued, "Four visiting."
She smiled and nodded, "Please wait over there, we will let the patient know you are wanting to visit. We will let you know as soon as we can if you can visit your friend." The polite desk woman motioned towards the waiting chairs as her tentacles began typing for her, "Thank you."
Silver was fairly surprised she didn't ask for the students' names, but he gave a polite smile. With a nod, he turned and followed the teacher to the waiting seats. Silver sat down in a saturated green chair, it wasn't as comfy as he hoped it would have been. Izuku sat down beside Mirio, in a teal chair to Silver's left. Mirio sat in a green one like Silver, which had room for two as Aizawa also sat down. Despite the chair being stiff, Silver felt himself want to melt into it and sleep. These past few days had been stressful, that was for sure. And the energyloss from the Telepathy earlier wasn't helping his want for sleep. His arms gently fell behind the back of the headrest of the green chair. The clock ticked, tick, tock, tick, tock. It was such a calming sound, the repetitive click of gear turning as the little clock did its job. As much as he wanted to sleep, he knew they were here for a reason. So Silver let his amber eyes wander around the building and the people. Trying to find something to capture his attention, rather than be left with his thoughts. He didn't have time to fret about it though.
"Aizawa," The desk lady called the group to her again, "Floor 3, room 17." She smiled as she handed the teacher a note with the room information on it, "Thank you for being patient."
Izuku; Hmm? Hey, someone in your comments-
