Chapter 32; No Longer Grey
"Silver," The principal kept a straight face as he put his paw-like hands onto the table, "You weren't answering Shota's messages?" Silver grew pale, had he forgotten to reply?!
His eyes widened, "W-What? I-I thought I did?" He thought back to when he saw the messages…he never did reply…Silver's shoulders dropped in dismay with himself. He had been too panicked and busy rushing to get to the office to remember to tell his teacher he was fine, "I'm so sorry, I wasn't trying to. I-I was sleeping in and when I saw the texts, I guess I forgot to reply."
"It's fine," Aizawa replied, surprisingly not caring much that Silver had been sleeping in, "You're here now."
Silver only responded with a sheepish nod, "Well, since you are finally here, let's get to the point, shall we?" Nezu sat up straight as his small size peeked over the table, "Silver, we have finally reached the end of the road." The hedgie-boy gulped, was that a good thing or a bad thing? The wording made it hard for Silver to tell…this was about how he was trying to be an official student..right? "This, like any other trying for a spot in UA, is a big moment. Especially with all the extra hoops we had to jump through," Nezu frowned a little, this was about Silver as an official student…but that face…and tone…Silver's heart dropped. It wasn't looking good, he already figured the answer was no. No, he couldn't be an official student. Yet, his optimism made his ears perk up. Perhaps Nezu was just throwing Silver off. 'Pulling his leg' as All Might had earlier said. "So, we are all here to inform you of the final result."
A cold spikey tentacle of anxiety clawed at his chest as he waited. Silver's ears perked and his tail wagged. His hands balled into fists to try and calm the nerves. Sweating, Silver felt a wave hit him as Nezu lifted a small card into the air and announced.
"Welcome to UA officially!"
Relief. So much relief. His knees went weak and he let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. Then the other emotions hit him. Silver stared at the card as his eyes widened, wait. HE GOT AN OFFICIAL STUDENT ID?! HE'S AN OFFICIAL STUDENT?! Silver's jaw dropped as his mind processed what that meant. He got in…officially. He just woke up…what a way to start the day! Silver's body felt like the sun as he shone a large happy smile. The delayed response made all the teachers laugh as the hedgie-boy started jumping up and down. HOLY! He got in! HE GOT IN?! It was so much, just some simple words. Silver would have never thought that a few words would have made him so happy.
"REALLY?!" He couldn't hold back a shout, his mind feeling so many things. Silver had no idea how to express how he felt, "Like REALLY REALLY?!"
Nezu nodded, sharing a smile like Silver's smile, "Yes! You're an official student now! Congratulations! You've earned it." The tiny mouse leaned over and slid the card across the desk.
When he picked it up, it was like all the weight of reality left him. He had to be dreaming…if he was…Silver was gonna be upset when he woke up. The hedgehog held the Student ID happily. Mother of Iblis, he understood how Izuku felt now. Getting into UA was no easy task, that was for sure. Silver had to make cupcakes to celebrate this! The teachers all grinned and laughed seeing Silver's over-the-moon response.
Between the Pros congratulating him, Silver heard Aizawa speak with a hint of a smile, "Would you like to show your class now?" The psychic gripped the ID tighter, could he tell Izuku now?! This was the best day!
"Yes!"
Stepping back into Heights Alliance with Aizawa in tow, Silver tried hard to keep his smile repressed. He couldn't help it. The psychic felt like his soul was grinning and giggling. He couldn't wait to see his class's reaction. Taking a few deep breaths, Silver tried to cover his excitement with a forced frown. Taking off his coat slowly, Silver avoided eye contact. He knew he would burst into a smile if he looked at anyone. Aizawa could see Silver's attempt to hide the pure joy, snickering a little as the ivory-haired teen failed to filter and hide his emotions. 1-A fell silent seeing Silver enter with their teacher trailing behind, avoiding eye contact and remaining slow.
"Silver?" Izuku asked as he grew a worried frown, "Are you ok…"
The teen in question physically strained himself to not erupt into a smile, "...hmm…" Humming nonchalantly, Silver walked forward with his head down. His hand in his pocket, touching his new card, "...you still wanna know why I was worried?" Not moving his head, Silver tossed a glance at his class while attempting to remain indifferent.
Uraraka looked towards Aizawa, who being the master at frowning, stared back blankly…giving no hint to the class on what was going on, "Of course…we are worried about you and all..it's not like you to get into trouble."
"Especially so frequently," Deku cut in with a stiff glare, "That would be an insane record. Sent to the principal's office seven times in a day and no expulsion." Ok…yeah…that did kinda look weird. Izuku was not buying any of Silver's earlier cover-ups and was being bluntly honest, "So, what's going on?"
Silver kept his eyes locked on his boots, a small smile forming. He knew he couldn't respond with beaming, so instead, he grabbed the new ID and slapped it into Izuku's hands. His best friend went quiet with confusion, the whole class slowly gathering closer. Deku hesitated before looking at the ID in confusion. Izuku could tell it was a Student ID, and turned it around to find Silver's name and photo. The trainee frowned, Silver's ID? Why was Silver giving Izuku his ID? …What was Izuku missing from this? The whole class leaned over on one another to steal a peak but remained just as confused. Bakugo caught on first though.
"Tch, finally official?"
Izuku's eyes widened as it clicked. That's right! Silver wasn't ever an OFFICIAL student! He was only brought to UA as a refuge, a waiting place, a temporary place until his family came to pick him up! But, Silver didn't have a family! Deku inhaled sharply. He had forgotten Silver wasn't even actually part of their class! Not on paper, not legally…Midoriya forgot Silver had been running around as an unofficial UA student and doing legitimate hero work. Dang, did that mean Silver had kinda been in a gray area for doing hero work? Or was it just completely illegal-? (A\N; Yes, I'm still poking fun at this. XD)
Well, it didn't matter anymore. Because Silver was a legal hero now, and an official part of 1-A! "Y-You're an official student?!" Izuku's eyes watered a little as he read all of the information on the card, "THIS IS AMAZING!"
Silver couldn't help but grin as the giddy excitement took over, "CAN'T GET RID OF ME NOOOOW!" He leaped into a hug, wrapping his arms around Izuku tightly as he was overcome with joy, "This was so haaaard to do!" The psychic whined childishly, "I hate legal paperwork."
Izuku was full-blown crying now, his tears dripping onto Silver's shoulder as he cried, "I'd never get rid of you anyways! This is amazing! I'm so happy for you!" Aizawa let a soft expression grow on his face, sometimes being a teacher was awesome. Most of the time it sucked, but sometimes it was awesome. (A\N; Dadzawa moment-)
The classmates all shared similar reactions. Kaminari laughed with a large smile and Mina poked his face. She mostly teased the fact that it was the other way around, Silver was stuck with 1-A. Sato claimed this needed a celebration. Jiruo complimented on how Silver got into UA, that was no easy task. Todoroki gave a soft smile as he questioned why everyone was so happy. Bakugo scoffed and shoved his hands into his pockets. Iida, while fairly happy, also was fairly confused.
"Wait-" Iida began as he glanced at his teacher, "How? UA isn't exactly known to take students in while the year is half over." Aizawa leaned against the doorway and nodded, "Then-?"
Todoroki tilted his head, "Did you guys find Silver's family?"
"Yeah, there is NO way he is paying for this course from a small Cafe shift!" Uraraka chimed in, backing away from the group hug slightly. Silver knew Izuku had questions about the whole ordeal, but right now…Midoriya was just using Silver's shirt as a hankie.
"True," Aizawa said as he lost that small hint of a smile, hooking a thumb into his pocket, "UA doesn't do transfer students. And no, Silver's family is a no-show," Uraraka's face fell as she grew saddened, "He is on scholarship."
"WHAT?!"
Silver tensed at the class's screams, especially Izuku's right in his ear, "Ew…" Silver pulled out of the hug with his counterpart when he realized just how wet his shoulder had gotten, "Izukuuuu, I'm not your snot rag!" The psychic tried to wipe some of the wetness, which was a mix of tears and snot, off his shoulder with an awkward smile. Instead that only smeared the mess around…he was gonna have to change, "I get your happiness and all. I'm happy too. But why the snot?"
Izuku wiped away his messy cry and sniffled, "I'm sorry! I didn't realize!" The emerald-haired trainee fiddled with the hem of his shirt, "I-I'll get you a new shirt-!" Silver waved his hand dismissively, shrugging with a laugh and leaving the mess alone, "...B-But Scholarship?! I've never- UA has NEVER done a Scholarship before! N-Not that I've known of!"
"We don't."
Silver backed up from Izuku so Aizawa could see just how astonished Izuku looked. Midoriya had his eyes wide and his jaw dropped. The whole class looked astonished actually. Even Bakugo looked at Silver with a slight look of admiration. Silver smiled, he got something rare here it seemed. Being the first UA student on scholarship…ever. Lucky him! Aizawa pushed himself off the door frame and his shoulders dropped as he explained the story.
"We only let Silver on one because we have seen how good of a hero he is. That coupled with the fact he fits well with the class and works hard, we got him an official spot. He already has a provisional license anyhow." Aizawa put his other hand into his pocket, humming as he closed his eyes, "The legal work was a nightmare though, which is why we don't do scholarships. Or transfers." Silver nodded, he knew how much of a pain it was to be an adult and filing away paperwork now, "Silver had earned his spot just as well as any of you."
Izuku nodded and Uraraka smiled, "I was doing the Ball Throw when you asked to spar with Bakugo," Silver admitted, "You scared the crap outta me." He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly and Midoriya's eyes widened.
"What? Really?" Izuku's jaw dropped…again, "You even took the same tests? The Quirk Assessment Test? Wait, what about the entrance exam? Did you take that too?" The psychic nodded as Deku looked back at the student ID.
Bakugo scoffed, "Musta been real easy since no one else was fighting you." Jiruo nodded as she twirled her headphones around her finger.
Aizawa shook his head as Silver laughed, "No, he took a more personalized one." The teacher tilted his head slightly and opened his eyes, "Specifically the Sports Festival Obstacle Course with a 5-minute time limit and limitations on what he could do with his quirk." Todoroki frowned a little as Izuku's eyes widened again while reading the ID.
"But it took Midoriya seven minutes to cross through the course, and he won in first." The half-ice-half-fire teen stated and squinted, Silver's face fell. Of course. Of course, Izuku had won first…and of course, they made it more impossible than it was originally, "Did you pull a Midoriya and explode all of the mines?"
"We put a rule in place specifically so he couldn't."
Silver squinted, Izuku had blown up ALL the mines to win first?! That was an idea that would have never crossed his mind. Izuku glanced up from the card, "Wait, seriously?! You had to make a rule because of my stunt?!" Silver glared lightheartedly at Izuku, so there was an easier way to do things. Aizawa nodded and Izuku tossed an apologetic glance to Silver.
Momo laughed and shook her head, "We've had to make a lot of new rules since you set foot onto UA, Midoriya." Aizawa started with a huff and Izuku froze, "You're too creative."
"So then, how did you pull it off?" Uraraka smiled as she got closer to Silver, excited to hear Silver's ideas.
"I threw my boots."
The room fell into a stunned silence. Silver smiled sheepishly. Yeah, they expected something cool or smart. Silver wasn't either of those criteria. Bakugo burst into laughter and Midoriya stared in confusion. Uraraka's smile faltered into a fried-brain look and Kaminari inhaled his spit and started choking. Hagakure put her hands on her hips and Mina gave a quizzical look.
"You threw your boots?!" Kaminari sputtered after he gathered himself enough to talk, "How the heck-? WHY WAS THAT YOUR GO TO IDEA TO FIX THE PROBLEM?! That's so weird!" Silver's face began to heat up hearing how silly the idea was. He never looked at it as weird…but it kinda was….
Silver frowned and glanced at his boots as his face turned pink, "Well…it worked didn't it?"
Bakugo about died laughing from Silver's fix, tossing his footwear into oblivion to win a race. That sure sounds VERY smart! (A\N; Writing sarcasm, mmmm 10/10 pfft) Aizawa cleared his throat to take the conversation off the weird idea Silver had to win. It was true, it HAD worked. Izuku glanced back to the card and re-read the information. There were some slightly concerning things, like Silver was only 90 pounds? That seemed wrong…Deku had carried Silver around before (while in the haunted house mostly) and Silver had felt heavier than 90 pounds. Perhaps that was simply because he was running around with the extra weight? And another thing, Silver's birthday. November 14th. That was only like, two days away! Why hadn't the ivory-haired teen told Izuku about this? They were best friends! So why didn't Silver tell Deku that his birthday was so soon? Such a special day shouldn't be one to get forgotten!
As the class died down, Izuku handed Silver his ID back. The psychic took it with a proud smile. The emerald counterpart began thinking about a plan, since Silver was official, he should have some sort of celebration. And what better way to celebrate something than by mixing it with his birthday? Silver pulled at his shirt and dismissed himself to change it. Izuku laughed a little out of embarrassment. So…how would he start this plan? (A\N; I love subtly changing POVs, I just hope it's not too confusing for you guys. T.T)
"Here is 73,532.50 Yen," Momo rushed to shove the currency into his hands (A\N; Said Yen amount is supposed to be about 500 USD), "You've been working hard, go buy yourself some ice cream!" Silver's eyes went wide as he fumbled with the large amount of money offered to get ice cream, "Go on! The ice cream parlor is gonna close in about 10 minutes!"
Still, in his nightwear and groggy from the sleep he just awoke from, Silver's mind froze. There was no transition between sleep to awake. One second he was dreaming and the next his classmates were bursting through his dorm and urging him to get ice cream. 'It's so early though,' Silver brought his head down to look at the handful of money he now had. 'Ice cream? This doesn't make any sense…I just woke up. I think. Am I awake?' Silver thought sleepily.
Kirishima nodded encouragingly as he picked up Silver's cuffs from being nicely stacked on his bedside table, "It'll be nice! Go relax! You like sweets, go get that ice cream!" The energized red-haired hero shoved the golden limiters into Silver's already full arms.
"I'm not even dressed…?" The psychic mumbled as he tried to blink away his sleep. His hair was a mess, his eyes were confused, his brain was slow, and he had just gotten out of bed. It was so early. Well, at least to him. Plus, it was a school day. 5 AM. The clock said 5 AM, he normally got up at 6:35 AM. "Why can't I sleep…? It's a school day…and I'm tired. I'm not supposed to get up for another hour in a half." Silver turned and dropped the things he was holding on his bed, looking longingly at his warm sheets.
Bakugo grabbed Silver's ear, "Because! We said go rot your teeth! So get out of here and freeze what little of a brain you have." The explosive trainee hissed slowly, raising his hand threateningly.
Silver just yawned widely. His little Hedgie fangs were visible with the yawn. The psychic rubbed his eyes to get rid of the sleepy sand. "I don't wanna…" He whined childishly as he stopped rubbing his eyes, "I wanna sleep…Why can't I sleep?" Silver leaned towards his bed as his eyes lowered, he hated waking up ... he hated dreaming too. He just wanted to sleep without any dreams.
Kirishima rolled his eyes as Bakugo began hissing threats to Silver. Red Riot went to Silver's closet and rummaged through the dresser to find a spare outfit. Which he then tossed to Silver. "It's a super special ice cream! You need to go get it! It has extra strawberries! It closes in 6 minutes! Go go go go!" The three invasive teens filed out of Silver's room and shut the door, leaving the psychic confused and tired.
"…I love ice cream…and strawberries…" Silver murmured with a frown, "Cake is better though…" He yawned and grabbed the shirt, "Guess I'm waking up now…I'll sleep later…" Silver grabbed the clothes and quickly changed. Laundry day it seemed.
He clipped on his cuffs and shoved the oddly large amount of yen into his pocket with a little struggle. How expensive was this ice cream anyway? 73,532.50¥ (500$) was a lot of money…for just some ice cream? Silver sighed as he sleepily tugged on his boots. Oh well. Exiting his room slowly, he was greeted by Jirou and Uraraka who quickly dragged Silver through Heights Alliance. Man, was everyone awake at this time? Silver knew he slept in late compared to his class, but he hadn't realized he was the last one awake. The two girls shoved him out of the dormitory with a hasty goodbye and Silver stood confused under the onning. That was…something. Silver sighed and glanced at the door behind him, he needed his coat. But he had a feeling he wasn't gonna be able to get it any time soon.
With a soft knock, Silver asked for his coat. Someone opened the door and carelessly tossed the dark blue coat outside before closing the door again. Had he done something wrong? Silver slowly picked up his coat with some hesitation. His class seemed to be giving him the cold shoulder. He was only two days into being an official student…zipping his coat, Silver sighed. He always seemed to fumble these sorta things. Silver turned and began his walk to the parlor. What parlor? He didn't know. Silver just knew he felt bad for making his class mad and wanted to indulge in a treat.
So…lucky him…the ice cream parlor's closing time was 5:30 PM. So…his friends must have mixed up the time. Or…they meant a different parlor that Silver did not find. Either Way, he smiled as he swallowed the last bite of his ice cream. Strawberry on Strawberry on Strawberry! Strawberry ice cream on a strawberry cone with strawberry syrup. What a heavenly flavor…and breakfast. Sure, probably not the BEST breakfast ever, but Silver being the sweet addict he was…loved it. Getting up and cleaning off his sticky gloves with a napkin the hedgie-boy smiled to himself. He might have done something wrong to upset his class, but now he had the motivation he needed to focus on fixing his mistake. Crumpling away the napkin and throwing it away, Silver headed back to Heights Alliance.
This would be fine, he'd figure out what he did wrong and fix it. No harm, no foul. Silver grabbed the phone from his pocket intending to let Izuku know he was headed back. Yet the time made him frown, 6:40 Am? Chaos, he needed to get to school before he was late! It started in about five minutes! At least before he hit the late bell. Opening his phone and Izuku's contact, Silver began running forward.
SilverPsychic; He's OFFICIAL! YESSSS! I'm so happy! Look at him with his little card!
Silver; I'm right here-
SilverPsychic; I'm so proud of you for getting your little Student ID. *Pats Silver's head* By the way, how did your attempt at eating 30K sweets go?
Silver; …Shadow stole Sonic and put Sonic into the cellar with Mephlies before we could get 30K treats…and Izuku was an accomplice!
Izuku; YOU'D DIE IF YOU ATE 30,000 SWEETS IN A DAY SILVER! So yes…I…helped Shdow a little. I DIDN'T KIDNAP SONIC OR THROW SONIC INTO THE CELLER THOUGH! I just hid Sonic's rings.
SilverPsychic; …pfft- OK, here you go Silver. *Hands Silver a cookie. And hands a cookie to Izuku.* Enjoy both of you little buggers.
Silver; Yay! Food! *Consumes*
Izuku; Why do you have a cellar Psy?
