Paranormal Searching
He supposed it was his turn. After all, he'd witnessed the strange circumstances at the office and then at the Burke's. Now, whatever it was, had come to the loft.
This was revealed when he woke up to the sound of drawers being opened in his kitchen.
Getting up, he expected to find Mozzie doing one of his random raids and looking for something…
Instead, he'd found no one. Just drawers opening up, their contents being shifted, the slight tapping sound as if someone was looking for false bottoms before the drawer would be closed and the process repeated with the next one.
Sighing, he wasn't sure why he didn't feel scared, just unnerved. Perhaps it was the prior exposure that reduced his reaction.
Unsure what to do initially; he decided that maybe he should grab a camera and set it to record. Evidence just in case something happened… or perhaps just a way to document the strange experience.
Mozzie had already been talking about the strange circumstances which was starting to be something like a new urban legend. But he hadn't been able to get evidence of it.
The FBI had kept a tight lid on the instance for fear of a security breach and to avoid the likely responses to such a claim. Haunted, indeed.
Then Elizabeth hadn't wanted her privacy invaded, she'd had enough with Peter's disappearance.
But him? He had no such claims… as long as his cover wasn't compromised, he could handle being one of Mozzie's claims to fame for being haunted.
Besides, it would add to the charm of June's old mansion. There was already a sordid history of illegal gambling and alcohol distribution, the association of criminals in general, and several hidey holes with secrets tucked away. Why not add a haunting?
With nothing else to do, he tried to go to bed, to get a little more sleep before resuming the search at the office.
They had yet to find a trail that led to the agent, but they weren't giving up either.
He had every source at his fingertips working on the problem.
Mozzie had called in his street informants from the children to the most experienced street rats capable of slipping in and out of almost anywhere unnoticed.
His agency contacts were concerned that something had happened so mysteriously so Beckman had agreed to send whatever agents she could through a different perspective of the city. Although some of these also roamed the streets, others went through different channels… not all of which she owuld share with him.
Regardless, he was grateful to have so many avenues covered. If any trace of Peter came up, it would be found and followed to its end!
When he got up again, he noticed that the… ghost, he guessed, was still rummaging around his kitchen. It seemed kind of aimless. Like it was just searching thoroughly in general, but not searching for anything specific.
Maybe it was bored? Perhaps it hoped to find a forged painting?
Regardless of what it might be looking for, there wasn't anything interesting to find. He hadn't been working much for any agency other than in the hopes of finding his missing handler and friend. Without that other work, there weren't any case files, no forgeries or alleged crimes, and no ties that could lead to his secret identity and other work.
Well, at least not beyond his backup stash for emergencies.
He kept a gun, his badge, and a document with the basics to confirm that he was an undercover agent working a mission as an alternate version of himself. They were hidden away where they weren't likely to be found, even in a search by the FBI, but where he could access them should the need arise.
So, without much concern, he let the ghost knock itself out… so to speak.
Jogging down the stairs on his way to the office, he did give June notice of the situation so that she and the staff could be prepared if they heard any of the noise or walked in to see nothing moving things about.
She was skeptical but didn't tease him too badly.
"If you don't believe me, go have a look for yourself. It was still searching the kitchen last I checked. This happened at the office and the Burkes in recent weeks with no explanation. There's just strange happenings for a while and then it stops." He'd shrugged at her.
Raising a brow at him, she decided to take him seriously despite her misgivings about the situation.
Having done as much as he could under the circumstances, he headed into the office for another fruitless day of trying to find his friend.
As the following days passed, the only thing that changed was where the ghost seemed to be searching. Once it had thoroughly gone through the kitchen, it continued to meticulously search everything else.
Having some fun with it, he decided to put strange things in some of the hidey-holes, like randomly putting a fork in one for no apparent reason. It was just a fork from the kitchen, nothing special, but it put something for the ghost to find. Then he did the same through the rest of the hidey-holes that he'd found until there were some mysteries for the ghost to find. Why not give their mysterious visitor some mystery to ponder?
It wasn't until he came home to find his badge, gun, and documentation on the table that he got worried.
Was this what the ghost had been looking for? Or had it merely stumbled upon them and taken the information for contemplation? And if it had been contemplating it, what did that mean?
Had his cover been compromised by an opponent, or was it really Peter, as some had theorized that was haunting him? If it was Peter, was he alive, would he remember what he'd learned? If it wasn't, would the spirit or whatever had found him use the knowledge against him?
At a loss for answers, he didn't suspect that he'd gain any by speculating. He decided to put the items away before anyone else saw them and hope for the best, but plan for the worst.
Giving Beckman a copy of the video of his place being randomly searched by an invisible force, he also tagged a note that whatever it was found his secret stash.
She was concerned but wasn't able to give any answers or certain responses any more than he was.
Instead, they agreed on how to pull him if whatever it was exposed him, and that in the meantime, they'd try to pretend that nothing had happened.
Still, he was grateful when his visitor appeared to leave and things went back to the quiet normal.
Thank you, everyone, for reading, leaving kudos, and reviewing, :D
