The twins exchanged a determined look and made their way to the second floor of the haunted mansion, where the dark corridors were filled with faint whispers and eerie, ghostly sounds. Their footsteps echoed on the creaky wooden floors as they moved deeper into the spooky environment. Lana held the Power Star detector in front of her, its soft buzzing guiding them toward the next Power Star. It was pointing directly toward the second door from the left, a foreboding entrance that seemed to beckon them.
"This must be it," Lana said, glancing at the detector's readout.
The twins nodded to each other, mentally preparing themselves for whatever lay ahead. Lola took the lead, opening the door with a soft creak, revealing a long, dimly lit library. The air was thick with dust, and the scent of old paper hung in the air as they stepped into the room. Towering bookshelves lined both sides of the room, filled with ancient tomes that looked like they hadn't been touched in centuries.
"Of course it's a creepy library," Lola muttered under her breath, eyeing the dark corners suspiciously.
As they ventured deeper into the library, several of the books on the shelves began to tremble. Without warning, a few of them flew off the shelves, transforming into the floating, sharp-toothed Bookends that they had encountered earlier. The Bookends flapped menacingly toward the twins, their ghostly pages snapping as they attacked.
"Here we go again," Lana said, ducking under one Bookend as it swooped toward her.
Lola reacted quickly, delivering a swift punch to one of the flying books, sending it crashing into the shelf with a dull thud. Another Bookend came straight for Lana, but she deftly sidestepped it and delivered a kick that sent it spinning back into the darkness.
"Guess they're not big fans of visitors," Lana joked, wiping her hands.
They pressed on, making their way through the library as more Bookends flew at them from every direction. The twins worked together, dodging and countering the attacks until the room was once again still. At the far end of the library, they came across a large, imposing bookcase that blocked their path. Its towering frame seemed immovable at first glance, but three books stuck out from the middle of the shelf, almost like a puzzle.
"Looks like we need to figure out the right order," Lana said, stepping up to the bookcase.
"Yeah, but which one do we start with?" Lola asked, peering at the three books.
Lana thought for a moment before pressing the middle book, thinking it was the most obvious choice. As soon as she did, a loud click echoed through the room, but instead of the bookcase moving, one of the nearby Bookends shot out from the shelves, attacking Lana from behind.
"Ow! That's not it," Lana said, shaking off the attack and stepping back. The books reset themselves, slipping back into place.
Lola chuckled lightly. "Let me give it a try."
She examined the three books carefully. Without hesitation, Lola pressed the top book first. There was a faint hum as the book clicked into place. Next, she pressed the bottom book, followed by the center one. As the last book clicked into place, the entire bookcase shuddered, then slowly slid aside, revealing a hidden door behind it.
"Nice!" Lana said, impressed. "Good job."
"Thanks," Lola replied with a grin. "Let's see what's behind door number one."
They pushed the door open and stepped into a small, narrow chamber. At the far end of the room, bathed in a soft, ethereal glow, was the Power Star they had been seeking. Its golden light illuminated the room, casting long shadows on the walls.
"There it is," Lana said, her face lighting up. She raced forward and grabbed the Power Star, feeling its warm energy surge through her.
The glowing star pulsed in her hand, its light casting away the darkness of the haunted library. Lola stood by her side, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips as she watched Lana bask in the accomplishment.
"That's another one down," Lola said with a grin. "We're getting closer."
Lana nodded, her heart racing with excitement. "I think this is number seven for the mansion, right? Just a few more and we should be able to make our way deeper into the castle."
The twins turned back toward the now-open path behind the bookshelf. The eerie atmosphere of the haunted mansion still lingered, but with the Power Star in hand, the mansion seemed less intimidating. The light of the star made the shadows retreat as they made their way back to the second floor of the haunted house.
"Let's go find the last star," Lola said, adjusting her cap. "This place is starting to give me the creeps."
Lana nodded in agreement, the eerie atmosphere of the haunted mansion still making her skin crawl. "Yeah, the sooner we're out of here, the better." She glanced at the Power Star detector, which was still pointing toward the far right room of the second floor.
The twins headed up the winding staircase once more, their footsteps echoing through the mansion's hollow halls. After dealing with the haunted house's tricks and endless Boo ambushes, they knew they had to stay sharp. Upon reaching the far right room on the second floor, Lola motioned for Lana to follow her lead.
"Okay, watch this," Lola said as she approached the wall, eyeing the height above them. "We'll wall-kick up there, and then the Big Boo doesn't stand a chance."
Lana grinned, already feeling the adrenaline. "Got it, lead the way."
With a swift leap, Lola jumped toward the wall and kicked off it, sending her flying to the opposite side, where she repeated the maneuver and propelled herself higher. Lana followed, mirroring her sister's moves. The twins worked in sync, bouncing between the walls until they reached the door above the entrance. They landed gracefully, their feet barely making a sound on the wooden floor.
Ahead of them were two large double doors, leading to the mansion's attic. It was the only place left unexplored in this creepy old house. Lana pushed open the doors, and a cool draft hit them both, carrying the musty smell of old wood and dust. They stepped into the attic, its dim lighting casting long shadows across the cobweb-covered beams. In the far corner, hovering menacingly in the air, was the Big Boo. Its hollow eyes gleamed with malice as it let out an echoing, eerie laugh.
"Here we go again," Lana muttered, narrowing her eyes.
The Big Boo didn't waste any time. It lunged toward the twins, disappearing in a puff of smoke just before reaching them. They had seen this tactic before and knew exactly what to do. Lola focused on keeping the Boo visible, turning to face it head-on, while Lana circled around to attack from behind.
Just like before, the Boo's ghostly form flickered in and out of sight, but it couldn't stay hidden for long. Lana saw her chance, sprinting up behind the Boo and delivering a powerful strike to its back. The Boo let out a shriek and reeled from the hit, but it wasn't done yet.
"Two more hits should do it!" Lola called out.
They repeated their strategy, working together to land two more well-timed strikes. On the third and final hit, the Big Boo let out a last, defeated wail before vanishing in a swirl of smoke and fading light. In its place, the final Power Star of the mansion appeared, floating just above the roof outside.
"There it is!" Lana exclaimed, already moving toward the balcony.
The twins climbed out onto the balcony, but the Power Star was tantalizingly out of reach, hovering above the mansion's roof. The gap between the balcony and the roof was too large to simply jump across. But this was no problem for Lana and Lola.
"We'll have to long-jump," Lola said, stepping back to get a running start.
Lana nodded, steeling herself for the jump. The twins sprinted toward the edge of the balcony, leaped into the air, and stretched their arms forward. The wind rushed past them as they soared through the air. They landed perfectly on the mansion's sloped roof, their hands gripping the shingles to steady themselves.
"Nice jump!" Lana said, a satisfied smile on her face as she climbed the roof.
The Power Star was just ahead of them now, its glow illuminating the dark night sky. They reached out together and grabbed it. As the star's energy enveloped them, the familiar sense of warmth and accomplishment washed over them. In an instant, they were transported back to the castle courtyard.
The courtyard was entirely different now. Gone were the ominous shadows and the cold, oppressive atmosphere. Instead, it felt peaceful, bathed in warm sunlight with soft green grass beneath their feet. The boos had vanished, and the air felt lighter. Standing near the center of the courtyard was Angus, who waved as soon as he spotted the twins.
"Well done, lassies!" Angus said, beaming. "The courtyard's back to normal, thanks to ye. Those pesky Boos won't be haunting this place anymore."
Lana and Lola exchanged relieved smiles. "Glad we could help," Lana said, stretching out her arms after the long battle.
"But we're not done yet, are we?" Lola added, turning toward the looming castle doors. "We've still got the basement to explore."
"Aye," Angus agreed, his expression turning serious. "The basement's no ordinary place. It's said to be where the darkest forces of this castle lie. Ye'll need that big key to get in, and ye've certainly earned it."
"Come on, let's go," Lana said, holding the big key in her hand. It felt heavier than it looked, its metallic surface gleaming in the sunlight. They approached the large door leading to the basement, which was adorned with intricate carvings of dragons and vines, as though it had been sealed for centuries.
With a deep breath, Lana inserted the key into the lock. The moment the key turned, a loud, echoing click resonated throughout the courtyard, and the door slowly creaked open. A gust of cold air swept out from the darkness beyond, carrying with it the scent of ancient stone and deep earth.
