A/N #1: Really nice receiving the feedback for the two chapters so I'll get started on my thank yous for that! TORONTOSUN (I was glad that you liked Skye and Mary taking charge during the case, I figured for the older one that would be a better fit. Glad I was right!),
Mb (I was really glad that you thought it was interesting how I set up as you said different lines of investigation by different people. I wanted something different with the investigations. Not surprised you laughed at Julia doing a little research with Mari on the cases since she's wondering about the investigation. You're welcome for the first half of the chapter! I was glad you thought the second half of the chapter was a nice filler one with them working on both cases. With Beckett and Darnley knowing Duncan's father while they were at the Academy I'm not surprised you're wondering about that, I figured someone would! You're welcome for the second half of the chapter!) and
Mb (Great you thought the latest chapter was a nice update! And I wasn't surprised you mentioned them all gathering at the library with the investigations. Also wasn't surprised that you mentioned the adding of suspects with the library as where the newest victim was killed. I was glad you thought it was a nice change of pace with Fox talking to Skye and Mary about her and Mia. I wanted to break things up just a little, lol, plus I figured they'd want to check on how the two are doing. Great to see you thought the first half of the chapter was nicely done! You're welcome for the first half! It was great to see too you thought the second half was nicely done too. And I'm glad you liked the flashback to Fox and Mia telling each other they love each other. It was nice to see you mentioned the two couples talking about the trip to San Diego, lol, it was fun writing that out! I wasn't surprised you mentioned them going back to the house since what I had there. I also wasn't surprised you were saying how the cliffhanger with the paranormal activity, Fox getting attacks and the scram from where Beckett and Skye were was evil, lol. I was pleased to see you thought it was nicely done and really great you're looking forward to more of the mystery with the cases. And I appreciate you catching up, I kind of figured there were some kind of plans with Labor Day, so thanks for taking the time to do that! And you're welcome for the second half of the chapter!).
Thanks for the reviews, I loved reading them and I appreciate the time taken to write them out and send them my way!
A/N #2: The title of this chapter is a lyric from the song The Invisible Man written by Roger Taylor, from the Queen album The Miracle.
Not A Boy Or A Girl
"Kate!"
"Rose!" Castle and Mary yelled when they saw their wives on the floor in the hall on the second floor.
Since he had reached the top of the stairs first, Castle was able to go to his wife and he knelt next to her before he jumped when Skye spoke.
"We're okay, we're fine," the investigator said with a groan.
"Stay down," Mary told her wife while the others were reaching them.
"No, let me up," Skye said firmly.
"And me," Beckett was telling her husband. She was relieved when he allowed her to turn so she could sit up and not feeling dizzy she said, "I'm guessing we didn't make it?"
"Not by a long shot," Skye replied. "Anais had more opportunity and she didn't either." She shook her head before she said, "I'm assuming you heard me scream?"
"We did," Zak said first.
"Were you both running?" Fox asked with a frown.
"Yeah, for… a few seconds before it shot through us both," Skye said, shaking her and moving to stand up.
"Don't-" Mary started to say quickly, trying to stop her.
"I'm fine now," Skye replied, standing fully. She sighed and said, "But I was trying to discern if the wall is hollow there and it is, there was a dumbwaiter here in the hall. Anais let me see her killer climbing out of it the night she died and she tried to run to her room since her husband had a gun there. She didn't make it in enough to close the door, but when she turned she saw her killer full on."
"Does that mean you saw them?" Castle asked.
"Of course I did," Skye said firmly. "It was her mother in law." She wasn't surprised at the surprised sounds from everyone and said, "We need to head to the basement."
"This isn't the basement," Skye said, not surprised at her wife's swift response.
"No, and I'm glad it isn't I'm worried about you," Mary said firmly.
"I'm fine," Skye said, looking at Beckett. "We're fine," she added firmly.
"Here's some tea," Castle said, walking over to the table where his wife and the investigator were sitting in the breakroom. When Skye nodded to the tabletop he set it down and watched her before Mary was suddenly cursing in Irish.
"You lied to me Rose," the doctor said. "She did jump you."
"She had to okay!" Skye said, her annoyance matching her wife's. "When I said she had gone through the house she remembered who she saw before she was strangled." She paused and then said, "Thayer confirmed that right?"
"The bones in her neck were cracked," Castle said though he was looking warily at Mary. "That was the only evidence of anything that could have killed her."
"She had to grá," Skye repeated, reaching for her wife's hand though she could only hold it briefly before her wife was kneeling next to her chair and embracing her while she spoke tearfully.
"I'm sorry Rose but you know how much I worry about you when your abilities come into play," Mary said. "And after all the injuries you've had I don't want you to be hurt that badly."
"I'm okay," Skye told her reassuringly, making her stand. She did the same and initiated an embrace before she urged her wife to sit next to her. Seeing Castle had done the same, she was about to apologize when he shook his head.
"Don't worry, I'm concerned myself," Castle explained. He glanced at Beckett briefly and continued with, "But more about my wife."
"Understandable," Skye said. "But she's fine, I got the brunt of it since I was behind you."
"And that was Anais," Beckett said.
"Running," Skye replied with a nod.
"Wouldn't that mean its residual?" Zak asked from the doorway, standing there with his fellow investigators. "Sorry," he said quickly when all four jumped a little at his voice. "We came back from the manor with Fox."
Nodding Skye was about to ask if they'd managed to find anything when the sound of yelling was heard from the lobby.
"Oh no, I know who that is," Billy said with a groan.
"We all do," Aaron said. "Unfortunately."
"Who is it?" Castle asked.
"Lazlo Falco," the four men said at the same time before they were turning to Skye when she snorted loudly.
"That fop?" the investigator asked.
"You're aware of him?" Beckett inquired.
"Yeah, I've never met him but I've seen him on YouTube," Skye said. "Says he's a medium."
"I think he actually is," Jay said slowly. When the investigator shrugged he said, "I went to see one of his…"
"Shows, just call it a show," Mary said, rolling her eyes. "He invited Skye to one, I figured he would have made her go onstage and try to one up her in some way."
"Yeah and he did seem legit," Jay said before the yelling outside that had stopped suddenly resumed.
Sighing, since she could hear her name, Skye stood and said, "I'll get him out of here." She paused and then turned to her mug of tea before saying, "Though I'll need to gird my loins apparently," taking a drink before she put it back and was leaving.
Following closely behind Mary, Beckett could see Skye reaching the window looking out to the lobby where a man was standing and speaking to Rice.
"I'll take this," Skye told the officer who nodded and stepped back. "What do you want Falco?" she asked.
"You know who I am," the man said.
Nodding Skye then said, "This is a police station, I'm not really sure why you're yelling."
Letting out a huff of air through his nose, Falco said, "That's why I'm trying to get in touch with you. I know you were going to Briar Grove and I'm well aware of the case there, of Anais Lindt."
"And?" Skye asked when he didn't continue.
"I can give you insight," Falco insisted. "I've been meditating and have seen Anais Lindt being felled."
"Felled," Skye stated.
"Yes," Falco replied firmly. "She was shot by her husband in the basement."
"That won't be easy to prove," Beckett couldn't help saying before the medium was spluttering a little and responding.
"Prove?" Falco said. "It doesn't matter, it's what I saw and-"
"I'm afraid we need more than just that sir," Brad interrupted, walking up behind everyone. "But I will take it into consideration."
Watching the medium nodding before he left to the door leading outside, Castle saw a woman was standing there and soon speaking to him in a low tone of voice before the two left.
"His wife and his assistant slash agent," Jay commented before they were all turning to look at Brad.
"Come on," the chief told them. "You four too."
After they had all gathered in the office, the GA men began relating what they knew about Falco and Skye took up what he'd wanted once she'd seen him.
"He's a fake," the investigator said once she'd finished. "Since of course he didn't see what actually happened."
"Yeah, I figured," Brad said jokingly. He stood up from behind his desk and took the lid off the box that was in front of him and said, "First CSU confirmed what we were guessing happened to Anais' remains."
"She was walled in," Beckett said.
"Yes and there was a flood in the ground at one point which weakened that brick enough for Cobb's killer to break through it not too long ago," Brad told her. "Though she was already dead when her killer dropped her through."
"It's possible Martin's mother was able to do all that," Skye said.
"She's right, here's a picture of her," Castle said, getting the folder he'd put everything they'd gathered while Brad had been gone.
"I see," the chief said since he quickly saw the build of the woman. "And that dumbwaiter helped too."
"We saw it," Zak said quickly.
"Yeah, it didn't take that long to find it," Aaron added.
"What about you?" Mary asked.
"This is the collection of things that Alma Lindt had at the Belle Terre Complex," Brad replied. "Since it was where a lot of the old families went when they had mental breakdowns… or hysteria as they said she was admitted for, they kept the items."
"When did she pass away?" Beckett asked with a slight frown.
"In 1938," Brad replied. "But this is the most interesting thing," he said, reaching inside the box and pulling out a small leather bound book.
"A journal?" Darnley said interestedly.
"Yeah," Brad said. "I haven't looked at it since I thought you should."
Skye moved rapidly to put on a pair of gloves before she reached out for the book, jumping slightly at her wife grabbing her arm. "That's why I put on the gloves," she said reassuringly to her before the doctor was speaking slowly.
"I want you to be careful," Mary said sternly.
"And I will," Skye said firmly. She wasn't surprised when Mary squeezed her arm before letting her go but remaining close. She opened the book to the first page and she read the first entry before saying, "Okay, the first sentence, I killed her, I killed my daughter in law."
"And no one read that?" Castle asked.
"Remember that I said she was there for hysteria? That and her name," Brad said. "I guess that was enough to keep her things sealed after she passed away."
"Does she say why at all?" Beckett asked Skye.
Scanning the diary swiftly, the investigator nodded before she read, "That whore stole my son from me. That's there a few times. Along with the line she can't even have a baby for the family line. I will never let Chester's brothers have a chance to take over our home."
"Martin's father?" Castle said.
"And he had… two brothers," Skye replied. She flipped through the diary a little and said, "Yeah, that's repeated here and there."
"Let me have it," Brad said, holding his hand out. "I'll read it, make sure about it."
"Does this prove it?" Castle asked.
"It does," Brad replied before he was pulling out a smaller box. He opened the box and said, "Do not touch this."
"I hope you're going to have that tested," Darnley said. He paused and then asked, "Is that Alma's handkerchief?" since it had a bloodstain on it.
"Yeah, A and L," Brad said, shaking his head before he jumped a little when Skye was rushing up to his desk. He watched her taking the diary and opening it before she was flipping through the pages.
"Here and this is where I wonder if she would have used an insanity defense if she'd been caught," Skye said. "I told Mrs. Carvon, she dispatched her son's wife who had been staining their family's name because she was an actress at one point, what I had done to my son's wife. I showed her my trophy, my proof I look at each day to know that she is gone and Martin could marry again soon, my kerchief I dipped into the wounds I caused when I pushed her to the cellar to make her disappear."
"When was that?" Castle asked with a frown.
"The day before her son committed suicide," Skye replied. "She doesn't write again." She gave the diary back to the chief and said, "What will you do?"
"Hold a press conference," Brad said.
"The Lindt family-" Zak started to say.
Shaking his head and interrupting the paranormal investigator, Brad explained, "The last grandchild of Martin Lindt's uncles passed away in a train derailment in Texas five years ago. There are no more Lindts so I don't really need to get any permission."
"Wait," the four GA men said at the same time before Skye was stopping them.
"I just remembered," the investigator told the four. "There is one person who's related to Anais."
"The librarian," Brad said. He paused for a moment and then said, "I'll have to wait until after the DNA test is performed on that handkerchief," looking at Skye when she began to speak as soon as he'd finished speaking.
"I need to go back to the house," the investigator said.
"You want to get the mother in law out?" Zak asked, guessing.
"Yeah," Skye replied. "Now I know what she did I'm afraid she saw that as an invitation to return. I want some holy water and sage to seal her out of there because she will not listen to me if I try to get her to pass on."
"When do you want to do that," Jay said when his fellow investigators were turning to him.
"As soon as we're out of here," Skye replied.
"What about Anais and Martin?" Mary asked her wife.
Glancing at her, half expecting her to try to convince her not to go back to the house, Skye said, "They'll stay out until the process is over."
"Process?" Beckett asked.
"Yeah, the house is huge and I'll have to go over all of it," Skye said.
"How much holy water will you need?" Jay asked.
"A lot," Skye replied. "And sage of course so-" she started to say before she was interrupted by a knock on the door.
"Come in," Brad called.
"Sir?" Fox said, entering the office. "I should have told you this before but I… something was stopping me."
"Oh?" Brad asked in concern.
"That's been happening a lot this case," Billy observed. "So that's not your fault."
"What do you have?" Brad said gently to the officer.
"I noticed this in the house after Beckett and Skye were… attacked," Fox said slowly, giving her phone to the chief.
