Pencilgon was nestled in her favorite corner of the tavern, surrounded by a fortress of books and spreadsheets, her brow furrowed as she strategized the guild's next move in Infinite Dendrogram. She had found the perfect rhythm between sips of tea and scribbling down notes when, without warning, the peaceful silence shattered.

"Pencilgon!" Sunraku's voice boomed across the tavern, carrying an unmistakable mix of excitement and reckless energy. Hot on his heels was Katzo, wearing a sly grin that immediately set off Pencilgon's alarms.

She exhaled, closing her book and adjusting her glasses. "Sunraku, Katzo… You know I don't like being interrupted." She crossed her arms and gave them both a pointed look. "What nonsense is it this time?"

Sunraku, undeterred, slid into the seat across from her, barely missing her tea. "Hear me out!" He waved his hands, clearly thrilled by whatever harebrained idea had brought him here. "Katzo and I came up with something revolutionary! It'll totally help the guild boost its popularity with the players."

Katzo leaned in, flashing her a grin. "Yeah, Pencilgon, we're talking about something that'll get people to flock to our guild. We're planning a... Talent Show!"

Pencilgon stared at them blankly, waiting for the punchline. When it didn't come, she sighed, rubbing her temples. "A… talent show? Really? That's your 'big idea'? How on earth does that help us?"

Sunraku looked at her with the excitement of someone who'd just unlocked a hidden quest. "Think about it, Pencilgon! It's the perfect way to recruit new members and let players show off their skills! Imagine it—an entire event dedicated to finding new talent!"

Katzo nodded. "People love attention. If we're the guild providing it, they'll remember us. Plus, we could scout out strong players without fighting them directly. They show us what they've got, and we pick the best of the best!"

Pencilgon pinched the bridge of her nose, attempting to stay calm. "So your brilliant idea is to hold a talent show, which—mind you—will probably attract the weirdest, most eccentric players in the game? Do you know how much effort it'll take to manage this circus?"

Sunraku grinned even wider. "Exactly! And who better to manage it than the most organized person in the guild?" He pointed at her with exaggerated enthusiasm.

Pencilgon narrowed her eyes at him. "You're not dragging me into this mess."

Katzo gave her an innocent shrug. "Come on, Pencilgon, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do something… different. Think of the tactical advantages! We'll see their strengths, weaknesses, and maybe get some laugh-worthy fails on the way. Plus, imagine the look on the other guilds' faces when they see how much attention we're getting."

Pencilgon considered this, albeit reluctantly. "Alright, let's pretend for a moment that I actually consider this a feasible plan. How do you propose we run this so-called talent show? Are we talking about combat skills, or are we entertaining ridiculous stunts for the sake of entertainment?"

Sunraku, positively glowing at her small show of interest, jumped up. "A bit of everything! Combat, dexterity, creativity—whatever players think they can impress us with. We give them a stage, they give us their best shot."

Katzo chimed in, holding up a hand as if listing items. "We'll need a location that's big enough to host everyone, some hype to get the word out, and of course… we need a judging panel. I nominate you, Pencilgon!"

Pencilgon groaned, feeling the weight of their scheme beginning to settle on her shoulders. "Why do I feel like I'm the only person thinking critically about this?"

Sunraku shrugged. "Because you're the only one here with a brain? Come on, it'll be fun! Just imagine the insane stuff people will try to pull off for a shot at joining us."

Pencilgon raised a skeptical eyebrow. "Fun, right. And when this thing inevitably falls apart, who do you think they'll blame?"

"Not us!" Katzo assured, his grin widening. "You'll handle the logistics, and we'll handle the hype."

She shot him a sharp glare. "Fine, but I'll do this my way." Pencilgon began laying out terms. "We'll need a venue near one of the main hubs for visibility. I'll arrange a proper entry system, because if we leave it up to you two, we'll have a mob on our hands."

Sunraku clapped his hands together, thrilled by her reluctant commitment. "Pencilgon, you're amazing. You're already making this sound ten times better than we imagined!"

Pencilgon rolled her eyes, muttering to herself, "I must be insane for going along with this." But a small part of her was intrigued—maybe this could be the opportunity to screen players in a way that gave the guild an advantage, even if it involved watching their peers try to juggle or sing terribly off-key.

The Day of the Talent Show

The turnout was both impressive and terrifying. Players from across Infinite Dendrogram gathered near the massive, open-air coliseum, buzzing with excitement. Pencilgon watched the crowd from the sidelines, clipboard in hand, feeling a mixture of dread and responsibility. Sunraku and Katzo, meanwhile, were busy hyping up the event, throwing around phrases like "life-changing experience" and "a chance at eternal glory."

"All right, folks!" Sunraku announced, his voice echoing across the coliseum. "Welcome to the very first Guild Talent Show! We're looking for the best of the best—and by that, we mean entertain us. Show us something impressive, unique, maybe even a little crazy!"

A nervous-looking player stepped forward, his character garbed in a bright red magician's outfit. "Hi, I'm Arka, and I, uh, specialize in magic tricks," he stammered.

Pencilgon arched an eyebrow as the player launched into a bizarre set of spells, each producing a shower of sparkling lights but nothing more. Sunraku and Katzo clapped enthusiastically, while Pencilgon just jotted down a quick note: Excessive enthusiasm, poor mana control.

Next, a brawny knight lumbered forward, flexing his muscles and declaring, "I'm Torgath, the Unbreakable! Witness my endurance!" He proceeded to let several players attack him, each blow failing to make him flinch. Sunraku and Katzo whooped and cheered, thoroughly impressed.

Katzo leaned over to Pencilgon. "He'd make a great tank for our raids."

Pencilgon jotted down a note: Strong, possibly useful, but may have ego issues.

The next act was... an interpretive dance? Pencilgon stared as a rogue danced in circles, arms flailing in an over-the-top display of agility. Pencilgon's eyebrow twitched, trying to find a point in this performance. Sunraku, meanwhile, looked at her with hopeful eyes.

"Please don't ask me to take this seriously," she said flatly, though she couldn't help a smirk when the rogue's finale was a failed backflip that sent him sprawling.

"See, Pencilgon?" Sunraku said, beaming. "This is already more fun than anything else we've done lately."

She sighed, finally cracking a smile despite herself. "Fine, I'll admit—this is… mildly entertaining."

The talent show continued in this chaotic fashion, a mix of genuine talent and complete disasters that left Pencilgon baffled, amused, and occasionally impressed. After the final act—a bard's shockingly soulful song—Sunraku, Katzo, and Pencilgon gathered to discuss their picks.

"So…" Pencilgon began, flipping through her notes, "our options are limited, but we've got some real potential here. A few of them actually stood out."

Sunraku grinned, pleased to see her getting invested. "See? What'd we tell you? This talent show idea was genius."

"Genius might be pushing it," Pencilgon replied, though her expression softened. "But it was… effective." She took a deep breath. "Let's bring the finalists back tomorrow. We'll narrow it down and choose our new recruits."

Katzo high-fived Sunraku, and they both turned to Pencilgon with triumphant grins.

She crossed her arms, meeting their gazes. "I still think you two are idiots," she muttered, though a hint of a smile betrayed her. "But… well played."
