Hailey felt displaced. And nauseated. Her mouth had a weird metallic taste. She didn't know what was up or down. Her head spun and she felt vertigo. She reached out with her hands to catch herself. She felt her body list and without warning, emptied her stomach.
"…can you feel this? This is a wall. I'm placing your hand on it"
"Wha…" Hailey said and then something stung her nose. Alcohol. She could smell alcohol. She pushed whatever was in front of her face away. Though she realized that the nausea subsided.
"You need to open your eyes. The vertigo will stop when your brain realizes that your body is no longer in motion."
"No one has ever reacted this badly before," Wally said as he stared at the girl in disbelief. "We were in motion for less than five minutes."
"What's her name?"
"Um," Wally said and scratched his chin. He snapped his fingers when he remembered. "Hailey! It's Hailey."
"Hailey, my name is Will," he said as he placed a hand at the small of her back. "I'm going to help you sit down but I need you to open your eyes."
Hailey opened her eyes. Everything was moving, no not moving. Everything was still. She was sitting on a lawn. Her left hand pressed against the side of a house. And there was a redhead looking right at her with a small frown on his face.
"Roy?!"
Hailey presumed she understood what had happened when she saw Wally waving at her. He was standing behind Roy's kneeling form.
"I'm actually Will—"
"Wally! Did you run to the future?!"
"What?! No! That's not even possible!"
"Then why is Roy an adult?!"
Will whistled loudly. Hailey jerked and looked at him. "Hello. My name is Will. I'm not Roy."
"The hell you're not," Hailey said.
Will sighed and turned to look at Wally. "How much does she know?"
"More than she should. But don't blame me. That's all on Dick. She's one of them."
"I'm not one of them!"
Wally made a noise of disagreement.
"First things first, let's go inside. I don't need the neighbors starting rumors. Are you okay to stand on your own?"
Hailey tried but wobbled. Will steadied her and helped her inside. Once she was situated on the sofa and a ginger ale was in her hands, Will introduced himself again.
"I'm Will Harper. Roy's clone."
"So, what you're saying is that Wally didn't fuck up and bring us into the future?"
"Hey!"
"That's what I'm saying," Will said, a little surprised she hadn't reacted to the fact that he was a clone.
Hailey nodded, she'd decided to go with her gut and trust him.
"See what I mean?" Wally said in a stage whisper. "She's definitely a Bat."
Will didn't reply. He was assessing Hailey. He needed to be certain that she wasn't in shock.
Hailey ignored Wally's aside. "Okay. So, where am I exactly? I was previously imprisoned in a cave of sorts. Roy helped me escape. I lost consciousness while we were at sea. Not that I knew where the starting point was. I don't know where I am geologically speaking. Are we anywhere near the East coast? The weather and smell in the atmosphere make me think I'm near the sea. And I'm assuming we're in the US from your accent. An accent I can't quite place, by the way." She jerked her chin in Wally's direction. "That guy sounds midwestern. "
"That guy is from the Midwest. And you're only proving my point about you being a bat," Wally said under his breath and crossed his arms over his chest. Hailey glanced at him and looked away just as fast. Wally could've sworn there was a hint of a smirk. She was so bad at hiding her Bat tendencies.
"You're on the West Coast. This is Star City," Will said, not paying Wally any mind.
"Star City?" Hailey said and racked her brain only to realize that she had no idea where that was. She had little to no knowledge of where Roy lived in her world. She did have a vague idea of where Green Arrow operated from articles she'd read. "In Washington?"
"California," Will told her but he glanced back at Wally who shrugged.
"Was Roy's place also in Star City?"
"Yes."
"In the vicinity?"
"Basically," Will said with a tilt of his head. He wondered why she wanted to pinpoint where they were. Should he show her on a map? And should he worry about her being imprisoned? He needed to talk to Wally, hopefully soon. But from the way the girl was divulging information, she'd probably answer his queeries.
"So, that means Batman will be here before we know it," Hailey looked at Wally. "Why didn't you take me somewhere further away?"
"Roy told me to bring you here."
"But why did you listen to him! I need to get out of here before—!"
"Daddy?"
"Lian, what are you doing out of bed sweetheart?"
"I heard talking and—" Lian looked from Wally to Hailey. "Who's that, daddy?"
"Roy's friend. Wally brought her over to say hello. But they'll be leaving soon." Roy bent down to pick up his daughter. "Say goodnight, munchkin."
"Goodnight, munchkin!"
"Night night," Hailey answered with a quivering smile. She turned to look at Wally as soon as Will was out of sight. "We can't stay here. If Batman shows up—"
"He won't do anything here."
"You don't know that!" Hailey said in a harsh whisper.
Wally sighed and ran a hand down his face. Hailey knew that he thought she was more trouble than she was worth.
"Whatever. I'm leaving."
Wally grabbed her arm as she walked past him. "Where are you going? You don't know anything about Star City."
"To the hospital."
"The hospital?"
"You think Batman will attack me there?"
"Um, no?"
"Exactly! Now let go before I make you."
"Sorry, but I can't—" Wally shut his mouth when he saw a fist coming towards his face.
Hailey was about to punch him but was stopped before she could. Wally turned to see who had stopped her and saw Robin. Bart was next to him. The displacement of air hit him then. They'd left the front door open.
"Woah, chica. Wally is one of the good guys," Bart said to Hailey.
"Sorry we were late," Robin told her. "We don't have time to explain. You need to come with us—"
"The girl is coming with me," Batman said from the open doorway.
"I'm not going anywhere with any of you!" Hailey said in a low angry voice. She pulled her wrist out of Robin's hand and she pointed at Batman. "You especially. You kept me in a cell and had that alien chic mind rape me until I was practically brain dead. And the rest of you let it happen."
Robin and Bart looked shocked. Wally raised his hands in surrender. He shook his head while saying almost to himself, "I'm retired and had no clue."
"Do the Geneva Conventions not apply to you assholes?" Hailey asked them.
"Yes, they do," Will said as he came down the stairs. He looked at Batman and said, "Get out of my house. You are not welcome here if what she said was true."
Batman glared at Will. He looked at Bart next but then turned around quickly. He enveloped himself in his cape. Behind him stood Nightwing with his escrima sticks in hand. They were buzzing and sparking with electricity.
"Enough!" said Will. "My daughter is upstairs trying to sleep. Not only that but this is a civilian home. And I didn't invite any of you in except for Wally and Hailey. I don't care why you came here. But she is in my custody now. So unless you have a legal reason to take her into custody, get the fuck out of my house."
Nightwing turned off his escrima sticks and holstered them. "Sorry, Will. I wasn't thinking," Nightwing said to him and then turned to the man he'd tried but failed to sneak up on. "Batman, you are wanted on the Watchtower right now."
"I'm not leaving without the girl."
Roy walked into the room having entered the house from the kitchen and faced Batman. "That's not happening. What the fuck is with you? I never thought you of all people would pull a Lex Luthor. What were you trying to accomplish by keeping her locked up without cause?"
Batman didn't answer. He simply glared at Roy.
"What the hell do you think I did to warrant what you did to me?" Hailey asked Batman.
He was being completely irrational. She wondered if he'd always been like this as Batman. She had nothing to draw from. All of her interactions with the man before had been with the man underneath the mask.
"You have my son's DNA."
Everybody turned to look at her.
Nightwing sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "I told you they were related. Of course, they share DNA."
"No. She is an exact match."
"What the fuck, Bruce? Are you insane?" Hailey thought as she looked at the man. "Of course, he's insane. He dresses like a Bat and pummels people for fun. He even convinced the Commissioner that it's an act of justice. Yet, he allows people like Catwoman to break the law left and right. He has a stance against killing but was trained by the leader of an assassin cult. He's a fucking hypocrite."
Batman growled and moved towards Hailey as if he'd heard her thoughts. It was highly unlikely and he may have just reacted to her expression. Everyone in the living room moved to block his path. Will walked to stand in front of the others.
"I'm not telling you again. Get the fuck out of my house."
"Batman, it's time to go," Nightwing said and stepped away from the doorway. Wonder Woman had come up to the door silently. She roped Bruce in her lasso and pulled him out of the house, too quick for him to react.
"Will, I'm sorry we brought this fight to your doorstep," Nightwing said.
Will waved him off.
Nightwing nodded then put a hand on Roy's shoulder. "Thank you for everything you did to help Hailey. I'll leave her in your care." He turned to look at Hailey. "I'm sorry I couldn't help you sooner. Good night."
Hailey watched the others leave after apologizing and saying their goodbyes. Wally left too but not before leaving his number for Hailey. A fat lot of good it did when she had no phone, but she didn't feel like sharing that tidbit with him.
"Hey, are you okay?" Roy asked as he walked up to her.
Hailey shook her head.
"Roy, why don't show her to the guest room," Will told him. "I'd feel better if you both stayed here tonight. I'll contact Ollie and Dinah in the morning and we'll sort all this out. Are you both okay with that plan?"
"Hailey?" Roy asked tentatively.
Hailey simply nodded. Roy offered her his hand and she took it. He then turned to look at Will. "Thanks. We'll take you up on that offer."
"Good. I'm heading up to bed. Good night," Will said as he made his way to the stairs. "Oh, do me a favor. Don't do anything that will wake up Liam. She has school in the morning and I have a day job."
"What could we possibly do to wake her—?" Roy stopped talking abruptly when he heard Will chuckle. He crossed his arms and fumed over the fact that it took him too long to realize what Will was talking about.
"Idiot," Hailey said under her breath. There was a hint of amusement in her voice.
"Yeah, he's a huge idiot. Don't listen to him," Roy said in annoyance.
Hailey bit back a laugh. She followed Roy to the guest room. He told her where the extra blankets and spare clothing was then told her where the bathroom was located. He was about to leave the room when Hailey stopped him with a hand in his arm. Roy frowned at her. She gestured to the bed and looked away. She didn't want to be alone. Roy was the only person she felt she could trust.
"I don't think that's a good idea," Roy said.
Hailey looked at him with a frown. "Yeah. I mean, I'm only freaking out on the inside. It's not like nothing happened the last time you left me alone," she said in an irritated tone. She regretted it immediately and took a step back. "I'm sorry. I'm on edge. And I'm grateful for what you did. I just didn't want to be alone."
"Yeah," Roy said and rubbed a hand down his face. "That's understandable. I'm on edge too. I just didn't want to…I don't know, keep you from getting some rest. I doubt I can sit still, you know."
"Yeah, that makes sense. But I doubt I'll be getting any sleep, alone or otherwise."
"Are you hungry?"
"Now that you mention it."
"Cereal?"
"Only if it's the sugary type."
"Is there any other type?"
"Yes."
"That was a rhetorical question and your comment will be ignored."
"Why do I have the feeling that someone said that to you and you've been dying to say it to someone else?"
"Why do I get the feeling that you're masking a false allegation with a rhetorical question?"
"False?"
"That sounds like a trick question," Roy said and opened the pantry.
Hailey chuckled under her breath.
"Frosted or marshmallow?"
"Chocolate."
"Sorry, fresh out. And also wasn't one of the options," Roy said and grabbed two boxes. He turned around and held them out. "Strawberry or cinnamon."
"Allergic to cinnamon," Hailey said pointing at one box then the other. "Don't like artificial Strawberry flavors."
"Does it take you this long to pick out a pair of shoes?"
"Do you normally ignore your gag reflex to fill your belly?"
Roy sagged in place. "Okay. Back to the original question. Frosted or marshmallow?"
"Really? No chocolate cereal at all?" Hailey got on her tiptoes and looked over his shoulder. "What about the big orange box?"
"Peanut butter," Roy said with a frown and Hailey smiled. "She likes peanut butter." He turned around and grabbed the box. He handed it to Hailey. "Have a ball."
"He unironically uses puns," Hailey said with a smirk.
Roy rolled his eyes and grabbed the frosted cereal for himself. "The bowls are in the cupboard next to the sink. I'll grab the milk."
"I'm lactose intolerant."
"We have an easy job for you, they said. Nothing could possibly go wrong." Roy looked at Hailey and closed his eyes. "Never trust a Bat."
Hailey poured her cereal into a bowl. She popped a cereal ball into her mouth and crunched it.
