Chapter 9
Flynn and Rapunzel continued to live happily ever after, living with their children in the castle and travelling whenever they wanted. With her cousin now next in line to the throne, Rapunzel felt a new sense of peace. Freed from royal expectations, she could focus on her art and enjoy her life with Flynn and their children, living the simple, joyful life she'd always dreamed of. Flynn, too, had settled into his own passions, writing and storytelling, while still spending most of his time at her side, sharing the little moments of parenthood and filling their home with laughter. They still stole as many romantic and passionate moments for themselves as possible, savoring their hard-won happiness and the life they'd built together.
The castle had become a sanctuary, but with the freedom to travel whenever they wanted. No more hiding, no more endless fear of being discovered. Rapunzel didn't have to worry for Flynn's safety anymore, and he no longer had to worry about providing for their growing family. Life was better and more beautiful shared with the one you loved, and for Rapunzel, this dream come true was everything she'd ever wanted.
Yet, sometimes, that dream was shadowed by memories of what they had endured. And the only lingering reminder of those days were the nightmares, which came without warning, pulling her back to a place of darkness she thought she'd left behind. When she awoke from them, Flynn was always there, his arms wrapped around her, grounding her in the present.
One night, after a particularly haunting dream, Rapunzel awoke in a cold sweat. She felt Flynn's arms around her, and as she gasped for breath, he was already awake, holding her tightly.
"Rapunzel, hey." He whispered softly, brushing a tear from her cheek. "I'm right here. Everything's okay."
Rapunzel clutched his shirt as she tried to calm down, but the nightmare still lingered. "Oh, Eugene... I dreamt it again! That horrible moment in the tower... She stabbed you, and you were... you were..." Her voice broke, and she sobbed against him.
Flynn gently lifted her chin to meet his gaze. "You're safe now. We're safe." He murmured, taking her hand and placing it on his chest. "Feel that? I'm here, and nothing, not even our past, can take that away from us. We saved each other, and we're safe now. You'll never lose me again."
Rapunzel took a deep breath, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath her fingers. As she wiped her tears, she whispered: "I'm still haunted by that moment, even though it's been so long now! I'm terrified... I could never lose you again! When will these nightmares finally stop?"
Flynn gently brushed her hair from her face. "It's okay. It's over. It won't happen again. And... you know, I often have nightmares too."
"Yeah, I remember."
"And about the same thing as you, actually."
Rapunzel looked up, curious. "What do you do when you have those nightmares?"
Flynn smiled gently, holding her closer. "I hug you tighter in bed. I try not to wake you up, but just feeling you alive and safe in my arms always calms me."
She giggled through her tears but sighed heavily. "Will the nightmares ever go away completely?"
"Probably not completely. But we just have to remember it's in the past. And we're here now, together. That's what matters."
Rapunzel nodded, her heart a little lighter. She kissed him passionately. Flynn kissed her back with equal intensity, and when they finally pulled apart, they lay down again, Rapunzel resting her head on his chest as he held her close.
"Try to sleep some more." He whispered. "And remember, you're safe. I'm safe. Everything is fine." He kissed her forehead gently. "I love you. Always and forever."
"I love you too, my Eugene."
The next morning, Rapunzel woke slowly and saw Flynn still asleep beside her, his expression soft and peaceful. She smiled and reached up to brush a few strands of hair from his face.
As if sensing her, Flynn blinked his eyes open and smiled the moment he saw her. "Good morning, my sunshine." He murmured, his voice warm.
"Good morning, my love." she replied, leaning in to press a gentle kiss to his lips. One kiss turned into another, and then another, both of them laughing softly and not wanting to stop. Finally, they rested their foreheads together.
"Did you sleep better?" Flynn asked, his voice full of concern.
"Yes, luckily, no nightmares." She sighed, but the worry didn't leave her eyes. "But I'm still scared, Eugene. Sometimes, I feel like I could lose you again, and that terrifies me."
Without a word, Flynn pulled her into his arms, holding her as if he could shield her from any pain and any fear. He rubbed her back, his cheek pressed to the top of her head, letting her feel his steady breathing. "You'll never lose me, Rapunzel. Not ever. I'm right here, and I'll be here for as long as you want me. Forever, if that's what it takes." Rapunzel nodded, her smile growing as he kissed her forehead, then her cheek, and finally, her lips. She melted into it, feeling the truth of his words in every touch. As they pulled apart, Flynn placed her hand over his heart once again, letting her feel his heartbeat. "This heart of mine? It's yours. And it's not stopping anytime soon. You're stuck with me, whether you like it or not." She laughed softly, her worries easing with every word and every beat of his heart under her hand. He pulled her even closer, wrapping her tightly in his embrace. "I'll remind you as many times as you need. Day or night. I love you more than anything. So, if you ever feel that worry again, just wake me up, and I'll be here. I'll always be here."
Rapunzel nodded. She snuggled into him, feeling safe and loved. "It's just...these nightmares. You also have them. We should do something - Maybe… maybe we should face it. Go back to where it all happened. Maybe that's the only way we can finally leave it behind."
Flynn nodded, his gaze steady. "Then we'll go. Together."
Later that day, Rapunzel and Flynn stood in front of the tower. Rapunzel breathed heavily as she stared at it, her hands shaking. Flynn wrapped his arms protectively around her.
"Rapunzel, you don't have to go in there." He said gently.
"But what if it's the only way to find closure?" she whispered.
"And what if it just triggers more bad memories?" He replied, but before he could finish, they heard a noise from the tower window.
"What was that?" Rapunzel asked, her eyes wide with fear.
"Oh no! Looks like the place is haunted now." Flynn joked, though his voice was tight. "Or maybe someone's brave enough to go up there."
"I have to go in there." Rapunzel said firmly.
"No, it's too dangerous."
"But I have to find closure!"
Flynn looked at her. She looked at him pleadingly, her eyes full of determination. With a heavy sigh, he gave in. "Alright. But I'm going in first, okay? I need to make sure it's safe for you!"
Rapunzel laughed, despite the tension. "You don't have to protect me all the time."
"But I need closure too. Which means I have to go in anyway! And I want to go first, so I can warn you if it's too bad."
Rapunzel smiled, though the worry and fear still lingered in her eyes. "Very well, but please be careful!"
"Of course!" Flynn smiled and brushed her hair from her face. They shared a quick kiss before he turned to the tower's secret entrance.
Rapunzel quickly caught up, grabbing his hand and looking him in the eyes with intensity. "Wait! Really, be careful! And don't you dare not come back to me, okay?"
Flynn grinned, his voice warm but teasing. "Don't worry. Whatever's in there, I've seen worse. I'll be back before you know it!" He stroked her cheek gently. "I love you."
"I love you too." They kissed again, then slowly parted ways. Flynn took a deep breath before heading for the secret entrance. Rapunzel watched him go, full of worry and fear.
Once inside the tower, Flynn made his way up the stairs. The place was dark and quiet. He couldn't help but notice the mirror shards and Rapunzel's long hair scattered across the floor. He refused to look towards the other staircase, knowing he'd still see the bloodstains from his death experience.
"Hello? Is anyone here?" he called out, his voice echoing in the empty room. He heard a faint sound at the back of the room and walked towards it. There, he saw a candle. As he lit it, he carefully moved forward. "I'm sorry to bother you." he began, his voice hesitant. "But we had to come here to... make peace with the past."
Suddenly, an angry voice shouted from the shadows. "I can't believe it! It's you!"
Flynn froze, his heart pounding. "Who's there? Someone I know?"
"I wish I didn't know you!" The voice growled.
"That voice... It sounds familiar." Flynn muttered to himself, stepping cautiously towards the sound. As the figure emerged from the shadows, Flynn's eyes widened in horror.
It was Gothel.
"You!" She spat, her ghostly form looming in the weak light.
Flynn stumbled back, dropping the candle in shock before quickly picking it up again and holding it defensively in front of him. "You!"
"Yes, it's me!" Gothel growled. "Not exactly thrilled to see you either! Where's my dagger when I need it?"
"How... how are you here? You're dead!" Flynn demanded, still shaking.
"I could ask you the same question! The last time we saw each other, we were both dying!" Gothel snapped.
Flynn swallowed hard. He lit her up and noticed that she was transparent. "You're... transparent. You're a ghost!"
"Thanks, Captain Obvious! I almost didn't notice!" Gothel mocked.
"A ghost…" Flynn whispered, barely able to process it.
"And whose fault is that?" Gothel's voice grew louder. "You did this to me! You doomed us both back then! Yet you're alive, but I'm stuck like this! Explain that to me!"
Flynn took a deep breath, his voice calm but resistant. "It's alright. You're a ghost. You can't hurt Rapunzel or me anymore."
"How are you alive? Answer me!" Gothel's voice was full of fury. "I stabbed you! And you destroyed the only thing that could have saved you... that could have saved me! You condemned me! You condemned us both! How could you do such a stupid thing?"
Flynn clenched his fists, his eyes narrowing. "I couldn't let her give up her life for me!"
"Why? She wanted it that way!"
"Because I love her."
Gothel's form flickered in the candlelight. "Hm, I see. I underestimated you. You really do love her, don't you? So much so that you almost didn't get anything out of it for yourself."
Flynn's gaze was firm as he came closer. "When you truly love someone, you don't think of yourself first. You think of them. But of course, you wouldn't understand that! You've never loved anyone but yourself! And for that, I pity you!"
Gothel laughed bitterly. "Love? Love is a weakness! Look at what it made you both do! You were both willing to sacrifice your lives for each other, and for what? It would have been pointless!"
Flynn got angrier. "No! Love isn't a weakness! It's a strength! But you, like I said, you know nothing about it! And that's your real weakness!"
"You're delusional!" Gothel spat.
"I could say the same about you!" Flynn shot back.
She glared at him, her transparent form trembling with anger. "Now, tell me this: how are you here? How did you survive that?"
Flynn shrugged. "To be honest, I don't really understand it either. Maybe it's because there was still some magic in her tears."
Gothel's eyes glittered with mockery. "Oh, true love's tear, huh?"
Flynn's expression hardened. "I don't care what you call it! You tell me, how could you be so cruel? How could you imprison such a sweet girl for 18 years, just to steal her power? How could you live with yourself?"
Gothel's laugh was cold, almost satisfied. "Oh, very good! Thank you."
Flynn sighed angrily. "You are a monster!"
Gothel's eyes burned with fury. "And you're an idiot, Flynn Rider! A lovesick idiot who ruined everything! If it hadn't been for you, she'd still be in this tower with me, and she'd still have her loving mother!"
"Yeah, thank goodness I came across that tower that day!" Flynn mumbled, turning away. He let out a heavy sigh. "I'm wasting my time. This is getting us nowhere. And there's no way I'm going to let her come in here!"
As he started to move towards the trapdoor, Gothel reappeared, blocking his path.
"You can't just barge in here and expect to walk away like that!" She hissed.
Flynn grinned, his tone mocking. "Oh, I very much can! I'm not afraid of you! You're a ghost! You can't hurt us anymore!" He moved towards the trapdoor, but Gothel tried to follow, only to stop as if invisible chains held her back. "Aha! You're bound to this place! Thank God!" Flynn said relieved. "You can't follow us or haunt us down anymore."
He hurried down the stairs. "No! You can't leave!" Gothel's voice echoed, but she couldn't follow.
Flynn reached the bottom and sighed with relief. Rapunzel was there in an instant, rushing to him and jumping into his arms. "Oh, Eugene! Thank goodness you're back!" Her arms wrapped around him tightly, but then she pulled back, scanning his face. "Huh? What's wrong? You're so pale!"
Flynn stammered, trying to find the words. "Um… uh…"
"What? What happened in there?" She asked, her concern growing. "You look like you saw a ghost!" Her smile faded as she caught the look on his face. "Wait… you really saw a ghost?" Flynn nodded slowly, his anxiety clear. Rapunzel's eyes widened. "Oh, no…" She turned towards the entrance, already on her way. "I can handle this! Let me go in there!"
"No!" Flynn's voice cracked with urgency as he grabbed her arm, pulling her back. "I can't let you go in there!"
"Why not?" She asked confidently even though she could sense something was wrong. "I can surely handle a ghost!"
"This one's different." Flynn said, his words soft but firm.
"Why? Is it someone I know?" She asked, her voice full of confusion.
Flynn hesitated, his eyes filled with pain. "Yes."
A sharp silence fell between them. Rapunzel took a deep breath, already fearing the answer. "Who?" She asked quietly, her heart pounding.
He exhaled slowly, his face pained as he spoke. "It's her."
Rapunzel's breath caught, and her eyes widened in shock. "You… you mean…?" She swallowed hard, her voice shaking. "Her?" Flynn closed his eyes, unable to meet her gaze as the weight of the memory washed over him. He nodded. Rapunzel gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.
He nodded again, his voice barely a whisper. "I'm sorry, Rapunzel."
"No, no, no…" She shook her head, as if trying to make the fear go away. Her breath quickened as the tension built, and she leaned against him, shaken.
Flynn pulled her close, wrapping his arms around her. "It's okay! I'm here! Just breathe!"
She sank into him, taking slow, steady breaths. After a moment, she lifted her head and looked up at him, her gaze filled with determination. "I have to face her, Eugene." She said quietly.
"No!" Flynn's arms tightened around her. "I can't let you go in there! It's too dangerous!"
"I have to." Rapunzel repeated, her voice firm despite the fear in her eyes. "To finally find closure… to be free."
Flynn hesitated, his voice thick with emotion. "But you don't have to face her again! You don't have to do this!"
"If I don't face her, she'll haunt me forever. She'll come after us. I can't just leave her here, Eugene. "
"But she's bound to this tower...
"Still, if anyone else comes here, she could hurt them. We can't let that happen." She paused, taking a deep breath as the weight of her decision sank in. "I have to face her. I need to do this."
Flynn's expression twisted in frustration. "But… but…"
"Eugene, please." She said. "Maybe then I'll finally find the closure I need. Please understand."
Flynn sighed heavily. "Alright." He said finally, his voice low but firm. "But I'm not letting you go in there alone!"
Rapunzel's expression softened, her gratitude clear. "You don't have to come with me."
"Yes, I do. And I will!" He said, determined.
Rapunzel smiled weakly. "Okay. Let's go."
With his arm around her, they slowly made their way back up the stairs. As they reached the top, the tower seemed colder, more oppressive than ever. Rapunzel hesitated, her eyes flickering nervously around the room. Flynn stayed close, his presence a comforting weight against her fear. "It's okay." he whispered. Rapunzel took a shaky breath and nodded, trying to calm herself. But when Flynn let go of her to give her space, the memories hit her hard. The broken mirror. Her hair scattered across the floor. Everything was so familiar and yet so terrifying. She tried to look away, but her eyes couldn't help but linger on the mirror shards that lay scattered across the floor, the reminders of everything she'd endured. She didn't dare look at the stairs, though. She couldn't. Not yet.
"Hello?" She called softly, her voice shaking as she looked nervously around the room.
"Well, well!" Gothel's ghost emerged from the darkness, a smirk on her face.
Rapunzel gasped in horror. "Mother…" she whispered, her voice barely audible as she took a shaky step back. Flynn immediately wrapped his arms around her, holding her close.
"Shh, shh. It's okay, sunshine." he whispered gently, stroking her hair. "I'm right here. I'll protect you."
Gothel gave Flynn a disdainful look, rolling her eyes. "Oh, how disgusting!" She sneered. Turning back to Rapunzel, her face softened into a sickly sweet smile. "Well, hello, Rapunzel. It's been so long, hasn't it?" She opened her arms as if expecting a hug. "Oh, I've missed you, my sweet flower."
Rapunzel looked away, pressing her face into Flynn's shoulder, unable to face Gothel. "No." She whispered, shaking her head as the memories flooded back.
"Hey, it's okay." Flynn murmured, holding her close. "She can't hurt you anymore. She's just a ghost."
"Ugh, sadly, yes!" Gothel hissed. "Look what's left of me, thanks to you! I've wasted away to nothing!" She said angrily, her gaze hardening into a glare. "Look what you did to me, Rapunzel! This is all your..."
"Enough!" Flynn shouted furiously. "This isn't her fault! She's a good person, too kind to ever hurt anyone! If anyone's responsible, it's me! So, blame me if you want! I don't care! You deserve this fate, you miserable, pathetic, ugly, old hag!" Rapunzel looked up at him, her lips curving into a small, grateful smile. Flynn hugged her and whispered, "I have always wanted to tell her that!"
Gothel glared at him. "Ok, one thing I've always wondered, Rapunzel: What the hell do you see in this guy? He seems like the most annoying…"
Rapunzel's eyes widened in anger. "Shut up!"
"What?" Gothel asked indignantly.
"Shut up!" Rapunzel shouted, pulling herself out of Flynn's arms and facing Gothel, her eyes flashing. "You can say whatever you want about me, but you don't get to speak about him that way! I won't let you!" She took a step forward, her voice growing stronger. "You wouldn't understand, but I love him!"
Gothel narrowed her eyes. "Oh, love!" She spat. "How childish!"
"Yes, love!" Rapunzel replied. "Something you know nothing about! You've never loved anyone but yourself!"
"Now, Rapunzel, don't speak to me that way..."
"No!" Rapunzel said, her voice hardening. "I'll speak to you however I please! You brought this on yourself! All of it!" Her eyes glittered with determination as she continued. "If you hadn't tried to destroy our love, things could have been different! If you'd accepted it, you might not be standing here like this, all alone!"
"Please!" Gothel sneered. "If I hadn't ruined your little romance, you'd have never come back!"
Flynn hugged Rapunzel. "I hate to say it: but she's kinda right. There's no way I would have ever let you go back to that prison!" He caressed her cheek, and they smiled at each other.
"Ugh! Yes! You would have just run off with that criminal, and I'd have wasted away, and you'd have never thought of me again!"
"Maybe I would have come back to visit." Rapunzel replied quietly. "But it wouldn't have been enough, would it? Not if you couldn't control me!" She took a deep breath. "You didn't care about me, only my power! You locked me away, lied to me, made me feel worthless if I didn't do exactly as you wanted!" Her voice grew stronger. "But then I met someone who loved me for me." She reached for Flynn's hand and looked lovingly at him. "Someone who would give his life for me." She turned back to Gothel. "And then you tricked me into thinking he had left me! You hurt me in the worst possible way! So, why should I have thought of you as a mother after I found out?! You were never a mother! You were a kidnapper! A liar!" Rapunzel shouted while Gothel glared at her. "And instead of apologizing for all those years of imprisonment and neglect, you just chained me to the wall and then killed my true love right in front of me! So, why should I see you as anything but a monster? Why should I have cared that you died? You have no one to blame for that but yourself! If you had treated me better, if you had let me go out once in a while or if you had at least accepted our love, things could have been different, but you didn't! You just wanted me for my hair, you didn't care about me or about what I wanted or needed at all! Why couldn't you just accept our love? Why?" Gothel's face twisted in fury, but Rapunzel's voice remained calm. "You had a chance at love, but you threw it away! You only have yourself to blame!"
"Love?" Gothel sneered. "Love is disgusting! I want none of it!"
"No, you wouldn't!" Rapunzel replied, her voice calm. "Because love is selfless, and you are empty!" She looked back at Flynn, smiling. "True love is unbreakable! You were wrong about the world and about me! And you were wrong about him too! He truly loves me for me!" Flynn smiled and brushed her hair out of her face. "He didn't care about my hair or my wealth! And he would never leave me willingly! He loves me so much that he was willing to give his life for my freedom! Because I am his new dream, and he is mine! And I pity you for not understanding this! For never having felt such a wonderful love!" She rested her head against his, smiled and looked back at Gothel, who stared angrily. "I'm not afraid of you anymore! Now I just pity you! You weren't able to break me, just like you weren't able to break our love! Love is always stronger than hatred!" She turned back to Flynn and caressed his cheek. "That's how I got him back when you took him from me! By activating my power through my love and wishing with all my heart! And the power responded and gave him back to me! You could never stop our love because true love can never be broken! And that's what we feel!"
Flynn cupped her face tenderly, brushing a lock of hair behind her ear. "I love you, Rapunzel."
She put her hand over his. "And I love you, Eugene."
As they kissed, a scream echoed through the room. Gothel clutched at her chest, her figure flickering and weakening with every expression of affection between them.
"No! Stop it!" Gothel yelled, her image becoming more transparent. "Your… disgusting affection is doing this to me!"
Rapunzel smirked. "Well, in that case…" She wrapped her arms around Flynn, pulling him close as they kissed once more. Gothel screamed, fading until she was nothing but a wisp of smoke. Rapunzel and Flynn slowly pulled apart, looking at the spot where Gothel had been. "She's… gone." Rapunzel whispered.
Flynn nodded, pulling her close. "Yes. You defeated her, Rapunzel. You're finally free."
They embraced, and as they left the tower hand in hand, Rapunzel took a deep breath, looking up at the clear sky.
"This was hard." She said, smiling up at him. "But I'm not afraid anymore. I'm ready to let go of the past and focus on our future. Our dream."
"I'll always love you, Rapunzel."
"And I you." She replied, and they kissed again.
Later that night, Rapunzel and Flynn found themselves alone under the stars. Rapunzel felt alive, more at peace than she'd ever been. Flynn wrapped an arm around her shoulders, gently pulling her close. They sat in silence for a few moments, just looking up at the sky, savoring the quiet togetherness.
Rapunzel turned to him, her eyes filled with gratitude and love. "I still can't believe it, Eugene." she whispered. "I never thought I'd feel so free." She reached out, running her fingers through his hair and smiling at him with such a warmth, that it made his heart race.
Flynn took her hand in his, pressing a kiss to her fingers. "You deserve every bit of this freedom." He said softly. "And I'm going to be right by your side for every adventure."
She let her hand linger on his cheek, her thumb brushing against the stubble on his jaw. "You're my new dream, Eugene." She whispered. "Every wish I made in that tower, every star I watched, it all led me to you."
He smiled at her. "And you're my dream, Rapunzel." he murmured tenderly. "I'd trade every adventure, every treasure, just to be here with you."
"Thank you." She mumbled full of gratitude.
He looked down at her. "For what?"
"For being by my side, for helping me face today...for being you." She turned to him, looking up tenderly.
"You don't have to thank me," he whispered. "I'm just glad I get to share every moment with you." Slowly, he leaned in, pressing a gently kiss to her lips.
Their kiss deepened, and she melted into him, her hands reaching up to stroke his jaw. He wrapped his arms around her, holding her close until they were both breathless.
"Come with me." She whispered, her fingers entwining with his.
Together, they returned to their bedroom. Flynn closed the door quietly behind them, his eyes never leaving her. He reached for her, his hand sliding down her arm to take hers as he led her to the bed. Slowly, he cupped her face, brushing her hair from her face, and she felt the warmth of his fingertips. She looked up at him, feeling completely safe in his presence. He kissed her again, and this time there was a fire in his touch, a depth of emotion she had only begun to understand.
As he held her close, Rapunzel's hands slipped over his shoulders, savoring every line, every heartbeat beneath her fingers. Their breaths united as they slowly let go of any remaining distance, moving together in harmony and passion. His touch was tender, as if he was memorizing every part of her, and she returned each touch and kiss, with equal adoration.
Later, they lay intertwined, their movements slowing as they drifted, wrapped in their love and the peace that came with it. Flynn pressed a final kiss on her forehead, his fingers tracing circles down her back as they lay snuggled together. Her head rested on his chest; his arms wrapped tightly around her. Her eyes drifted to the faint scar on his stomach. She gently brushed her fingertips over it, her heart swelling with both sorrow and gratitude. That scar was a reminder of all they'd overcome, of how close she came to losing him, and yet, it was also a symbol of their love's strength, of the moment when they were both willing to sacrifice themselves for each other. Leaning down, she placed the softest kiss there, and silently vowed to protect him just as fiercely as he'd protected her. Flynn in return gently caressed her back and hugged her more tightly.
"Rapunzel," he whispered. "I love you more than I thought possible."
She smiled softly, her fingers tracing along his arm. "And I love you, Eugene. With all my heart. And our love can never be broken."
They drifted off together in each other's arms, wrapped in a love that felt boundless.
After that day, it was easier for them to live with their trauma, although they both still had nightmares sometimes. But they were always there for each other. When one of them woke up at night after a bad dream, the other one was always there to comfort them. Over time, the fears and memories softened, and though their worry about losing each other never disappeared entirely, they found peace knowing they still had years ahead of them to continue to live happily ever after together. Rapunzel would still always beg him to wait for her when they were old before he left again and Flynn would then still joke about drinking poison if she ever died before him, although they both knew that he really meant it and Rapunzel would assure him that she'd do the same if he ever died before her again, which Flynn always tried to talk her out of. But despite all these fears, they still lived in complete bliss, raising their children with love and loving each other passionately each and every night.
A little more than a year later, Rapunzel gave birth to their fifth child, another girl.
"What do you want to call her?" Flynn gently held Rapunzel, looking down at their newborn in Rapunzel's arms.
Rapunzel looked thoughtfully at him. "Well, I usually choose the girls' names, and you decide the boys' names, but…how about this time you pick her name?"
"Me? But I'm terrible with names!"
She nudged him playfully, smiling. "Come on, you're better at it than you think."
He laughed. "Alright, maybe something Italian? How about Lucia—it means 'light.' Or maybe Luna, which means 'moon.' Which one do you like?"
Rapunzel's face softened, and she looked back at their little girl. "Lucia." She whispered. "Light. It's perfect."
Flynn smiled and kissed her, hugging her tightly. In that moment, he knew her choice held more meaning than the words alone. Lucia symbolized the light they had found in each other, a hope they would now pass on. Later that night, when Lucia was asleep in her cradle next to them, they both drifted off to sleep wrapped in each other's arms, knowing they were where they were meant to be, together, forever united by their unbreakable true love. They were truly living happily ever after.
