CHAPTER 4

"My siblings and I are the first vampires in all of history, the Originals. Three hundred years ago, we helped build New Orleans. Now, we returned to find the city has a new king who rules with the aid of a powerful girl. They've taken possession of my brother, Elijah. A coven of witches want this girl for themselves. They seek to enlist my help, using the love of my life and my unborn child as leverage, though I suspect they have ulterior motives. So, I've made a plan of my own: I will free my brother and Caroline and reclaim the city for my family. Make the city safe for my unborn child. Then, I will be king."

"Um, congratulations, I think. You have really figured this one out." Camille said, picking up a glass and wiping the counter where a costumer had just left. "So glad that you are not here to feel sorry for yourself, for that girl and her baby being in danger."

"You misunderstood. Things are a tad more complicated. You see, there are two girls, the one I love and the one I have impregnated."

"Oh, wow, and they know about each other?"

"Oh, yes." Klaus smirked. "I'm afraid, it's inevitable. But enough about that. Let's talk about your handsome suitor Marcel Gerard. You said you have information for me."

"He's bringing someone to the music festival tonight. A girl he's mentoring. Apparently, she's going through a hard time. Rebelling against authority, anger issues, that sort of thing. I guess with my psych degree, he figured I could set her straight, but I said no."

Klaus instantly realised that she was talking about Davina and that was an opportunity he couldn't waste, "I'm going to go ahead and insist that you change your answer to 'Yes'."

"You're going to force me to do this, aren't you? Why even bother with politeness?"

Klaus sighed in frustration, "Because I kind of like you. Under different circumstances, I think we might be friends. However, I don't have the luxury of passing up tonight's opportunity. You see, in addition to being Marcel's rather potent secret weapon, this girl, Davina, is holding my brother captive. In other words," Klaus leaned closer to Cami and looking her in the eye, he told her. "The girl needs your help. Call Marcel. Tell him you'd be happy to oblige."

At the plantation house, Witch Agnes had just convinced Hayley to go and visit a doctor at the Bayou. Now they left to make preparations for that visit, leaving Rebekah alone in the living room. She had a laptop computer open and was doing Internet-search to find that attic Davina was holding her brother Elijah.

Just then Klaus came in and looking at computer screen, he laughed while pouring himself some bourbon.

"Please, sister, tell me you're not still at it with the Internet search. How does one begin, anyway? Just type in 'anonymous attic'?" He was amused.

"Someone has to find Elijah, even if I have to search every bloody attic in New Orleans. I remember details about the attic Marcel took me to. There were shutters on the windows behind Elijah's coffin."

"Well, that should narrow it down immensely. Myself, I prefer actual strategy as opposed to mind-numbing labor. Marcel's delay in returning our brother makes me suspect he's no longer in charge of the situation. If Davina's loyalty to Marcel is strained, perhaps the young witch will be open to discussing a new alliance."

Rebekah smiled bitterly, "As usual, your power grabs are more important than rescuing your own brother."

"I prefer to think of it as killing two birds with one stone. Rob Marcel of his secret weapon, bring our brother home."

Klaus smiled mischievously like he had everything figured out, while Rebekah was still unimpressed, smiling tightly at her brother.

Rebekah had found the church she though Elijah was being held. In the church she found Father Kieran who he asked about the attic.

"What happened here?" Rebekah asked noticing blood stains on the floor.

"Nine seminary students were killed... by one of their own. You're standing on blood."

Rebekah fake-smiled, "I'm not squeamish. Now, where's the attic?"

"Like I said, the church is closed."

Rebekah moved closer to Kieran and compelled him, "Where's the attic?"

"Past the sacristy, up the stairs."

"Thank you. Now, forget I was here."

Upstairs, Rebekah found the attic and opened the door. In the doorway, she looked inside where she saw her brother laying in his open coffin.

"I knew it." She muttered victoriously.

She tried to enter but bumped into in invisible wall as though Davina had somehow magically revoked her invitation.

Elijah's eyes were open and he looked over to her. The next thing Rebekah saw was a memory of them going to an opera in New Orleans in the 1880s as a backdrop. She was dressed in 19th century finery and standing in front of a horse and carriage, looking incredibly confused.

"What the bloody hell was that?"

"Rebekah, language, please!"

Rebekah turned around and became face to face with her dear brother, "Elijah!"

Rebekah ran toward him and hugged him tightly before looking around them. "What's all that?"

"You don't remember? We went to the opera house together. It was your first full day back into New Orleans' society after Klaus removed the dagger from you. It's a memory that only you and I share. Also, I need you to know it's not another of Davina's tricks."

"Oh, right, Niklaus did say something about your mind being free while your body wasn't."

"Indeed."

"So, pop me into the attic and we can find a way to get you out!" Rebekah exclaimed excitedly.

"I'm afraid I'm not quite ready to leave yet, Rebekah. This girl, Davina, she's... curious. Willful, too. Soon, I shall be able to speak to her, perhaps to even propose a truce of some kind. So, if we can end this war between the vampires and the witches, we'll be able to eliminate the threat to Hayley and her baby. Perhaps then Niklaus and our entire family can finally know peace." Elijah explained his plans to Rebekah. "But first tell me, Hayley and the baby are both alright? And the Forbes girl, is still held captive?"

"Both situations are pretty much the same, but Nik is doing everything in his power to play both sides and take us all down with him."

"No, I don't believe Niklaus would be irrational when that Forbes girl he treasures so much is involved. You, on the other hand, must focus on Hayley and the baby. Swear to me, Rebekah, that you will do everything you can to keep them safe?"

He returned her back to reality where she still stood in the doorway looking at him in his coffin.

"I swear, Elijah!"

Klaus had cornered Davina at St. Anne's Catholic Church, letting Davina know that her friend Tim was at his mercy, as he had his arm around the boy's neck, threatening to kill him.

"Don't you dare hurt him!" Davina ordered Klaus.

"Oh, I hope I won't have to, sweetheart. But, then, that depends on you, doesn't it…"

"Let him go now!"

"You should know, I don't do well with demands." Klaus told Davina.

Davina then thrusted her open hand out and twisted it, using her magic to break the bones in his leg. Unfortunately, it took only a moment for Klaus to reset his bones and heal from it.

"Impressive. But you don't want to fight me, love. Innocent people have a way of ending up dead. Your choice, little witch. Swear allegiance to me alone and the boy lives. Stand against me and, well, you know the drill."

Davina used the full force of her magic to kick Klaus in the back of the church taking Tim with along with him.

A while later, when Klaus had recovered, he was on the phone with Rebekah.

"What do you mean, 'Hayley's missing?'" Klaus angrily barked at the phone.

"What do you think I mean? There's blood and bodies everywhere, someone's ripped this lot to shreds, and there's no smart-aleck pregnant girl."

"Keep looking. I'm on my way." Klaus told Rebekah and hung up and pulled Tim who was still recovering up to his feet.

"Please, don't hurt me." Tim pleaded with him.

"It wasn't my intention. But sadly, we've run out of time to play nice."

Klaus grabbed Tim and threw him off the balcony onto the floor below. He spotted Tim's violin on the floor, and smiled as he threw it over as well, before walking away.

"So, let me get this straight, in the end you injured the boy and then in exchange for healing him, you demanded allegiance from that poor girl. Did I get it right?" Caroline asked Klaus when they had met yet again at the cemetery, like every night.

"That pretty much sums it up, yes." Klaus smirked at her.

"Classic Klaus Mikaelson," Caroline shook her head in disbelief.

"Oh, come on, love. Don't pout. You know, it was necessary evil."

"Okay, what about Hayley, you mentioned she ran into trouble in the Bayou?"

"Yes, apparently, the witches thought it was a good idea to coax Hayley into agreeing to visit a doctor at the bayou, with the intention of killing her, but Rebekah got there quickly and Hayley mentioned something about a wolf protecting her. I don't know. It's tomorrow's problem."

"But Hayley is okay now?" Caroline asked worriedly.

"Perfectly fine, the baby, who by the way, takes after her daddy, healed her and now she's sleeping at the plantation house, nicely tucked away in her bed."

"Thank god. At least that worked out nicely."

"What are you talking about? Today was a huge success, I have everyone where I want them."

"It's so nice that you enjoy coming to see me here while I'm rotting away in this god awful place." Caroline said sarcastically.

"Caroline, I didn't mean-"

Caroline shifted her attitude and sighed, "No, I know. I'm just incredibly frustrated. It's just waiting here all day, not knowing what's going on, and I must look like a huge mess and stink like crazy."

"A little bit, but you could be covered in slime from head to toe, and I would still see you as the most beautiful girl in the world. Caroline, I love you and I will get you out even if it's the last thing I do in this world." Klaus said now more softly.

Caroline smiled and Klaus smiled back, saying, "Until then, picture jacuzzi bath that you can use all day long and a silk bathrobe against your skin after taking that bath and just try to hold on thinking about that."

"Well, I'm a vampire now, I should get used to things not being pretty."

"I'm sorry, sweetheart, I never wanted you to experience that side of the world so closely."

Caroline sighed, "Don't worry about me, I've suffered through worse."

"You have?" Klaus raised his brows.

"Remember my father kidnapping and torturing me? Or when the wolves visiting Mystic Falls kidnapped and tortured me to get to the Salvatore brothers?" She asked smiling.

"You're joking?"

"Oh, right, you don't know about that…"

"Tell me about it, before I have to leave and let you get some sleep."

Caroline sat down on the ground, leaning against a pillar, "Fine, I'll tell you all about every torture chamber I have ever been thrown into."

Klaus did the same on other side and he listened closely.
