We traveled back to the night of the Vortex Club party, but this time felt different. I remembered Chloe and I entering the party when Max took that picture, and my head wasn't hurt like before.
"Let's go, we don't have time for this shit!" Chloe urged. When I glanced at my cousin, my vision blurred with happiness. Chloe was back.
"Chloe!" Max and I shouted, rushing to hug her tightly. I didn't care about the world ending; having Chloe with Max and me made everything feel right again. We had gone through so many timelines to bring her back, and she belonged with us.
Chloe looked puzzled and asked, "Jesus, what's going on with you two?" Max replied, pulling away from the hug, "Sorry, we're just really happy to be together." I quickly wiped my tears away, noticing that Chloe still seemed confused by our sudden embrace.
Warren frowned and stepped away from us. Chloe then said, "I'm really glad you're all here too. What's going on? We need to find Nathan, like, right now," as she turned and started walking off. Max and I exchanged worried glances, knowing we had to prevent her from getting hurt. I couldn't bear the thought of losing Chloe again.
Chloe was really upset and said, "That asshole is going to pay. Let's go, Max! Let's go, Aiden!" as she hurried away from us. Max and I quickly followed her. "Chloe! Wait up! We need to talk!" I yelled, but she just kept walking.
"I can walk and listen at the same time, alright?" Chloe replied. Max and I were the only ones who knew what was coming next. Chloe really valued honesty, so we had to tell her everything that happened to us, even if it was painful. We also needed to explain the alternate timeline where she was paralyzed.
Max yelled, "Hold on and listen for a change!" as he took Chloe by the arms to make her stop. She paused and turned to us, looking really annoyed.
"Okay, you have my attention. I'm all ears," she replied. "Chloe, you can't go in there. If you do, you might... you are gonna die if you do," Max warned her, his voice shaky. "So you guys used your powers, right? You rewound time and I ended up dead?" Chloe asked casually.
"No, Chloe, it wasn't like that at all," I said, my voice filled with urgency. I had never sounded so desperate in my life. "You should be on my side; there's no way that punk ass Prescott is going to take me down," Chloe said, her anger clear.
"You're right, he won't! Mark Jefferson was the one who shot you, and he has killed many others," Max said, feeling brave when he mentioned that name. Chloe's eyes widened in shock at the mention of that guy.
"Jefferson, the art teacher? That's bullshit! Nathan is the fucking real killer! We have the evidence! Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to that party to stop him from hurting anyone else. Are you two coming?" Chloe shouted at us. I shut my eyes for a moment and shot her a fierce look.
Chloe, he's already killed Nathan, and if you go through with this, you could be next, I warned her, shaking her shoulders. "What? Nathan is dead? How do you know that?" she shouted, pushing me away.
Max grabbed my hand to steady it. "We were there, Chloe," she explained to my cousin with blue hair, and I could tell she was starting to believe us. "Chloe, Jefferson drugged and kidnapped us. Aiden and I were trapped in his bunker. You have no idea what hell we went through to bring you back. You are here with us, and we can't lose you again. We won't," Max said, her voice trembling with emotion.
"Chloe, you have to believe us. Jefferson took fucked up pictures of Max, and I had to hear everything. I witnessed what he did to her after he drugged her. He also drugged me, so I couldn't save her. He almost killed me, Chloe," I said, starting to cry.
Chloe looked like she was on the verge of tears, surprised by what she just heard. "Oh my god, I'm really sorry, you guys. I didn't mean to pull you into this shit. No one should have to deal with that, especially not you guys. Now we have to go confront Jefferson… with just one bullet," she said, struggling to keep her emotions in check.
"No, Chloe!" Max shouted, her voice filled with urgency. "This isn't the answer! We can't keep trying to fix everything if it just leads to more pain!" I chimed in, my throat tight with emotion, "I really think we're fucking up these alternate realities."
Chloe's eyes grew wide as she exclaimed, "Hold on, alternate realities? What are you talking about, Aiden? What did you and Max do?" Max and I exchanged glances, realizing we needed to explain everything to Chloe about the alternate reality.
"We went back to the last day when William and Jodie were alive. We tried to stop them from leaving, but... you ended up in a car crash instead," Max said, his voice filled with emotion. Chloe's surprise deepened as she asked, "Wait, you saw my dad again? You saw Jodie again?"
"Chloe, you were completely frozen and in so much pain, slowly fading away. You even asked us to end your life," I said, unable to shake off the memory of her plea in that other timeline. Max and I understood how much she missed Uncle William, just like I missed Jodie. If we didn't change things, Chloe wouldn't believe this could really happen to her.
"Chloe, we can't do that. We came back to this timeline to save you," Max said, holding my hand tightly. "I couldn't bear to lose what little family I have left. Letting Jodie die again was so hard, especially since she was helping your parents after your accident. Christ, Chloe, I had another fucking anxiety attack when Jodie told me how bad your injuries were! And I almost had another one when you asked us to help you overdose," I told Chloe, tears streaming down my face.
Chloe's eyes were red, and I noticed tears forming. "God, you guys, that must have been really tough for you. I'm so sorry I had to bring that up," she said, trying not to cry. "It was harder for you. We had no idea what would happen, and as usual, we messed everything up. We never want to hurt you," Max said, his voice shaky.
"Do you really think I would know how to deal with that? No one would. The main thing is that we're all back together now," Chloe reassured us. "You're right. That's why we need to stick together to stay safe," Max agreed.
Chloe looked at us and said, "I understand your point, but do you really think we should just let Jefferson get away with his torture and murder?" I quickly replied, "No way, Chloe. We need to tell David. He'll believe us and can actually do something to stop Jefferson." My heart was pounding as I spoke.
Chloe still had a strong hatred for David, so Max and I knew she was struggling to accept what we were saying. "Why do you both trust him after how you treated him the other day? He doesn't even live with us anymore," Chloe questioned.
Chloe, he rescued us from Jefferson. If he hadn't found the Dark Room, Aiden and I would be gone, Max explained to Chloe, hoping to convince her. "I don't know, Max. I should have been the one to save you. I'm really thankful David was there," Chloe replied with a heavy sigh.
She struggled to see David as a hero, something she never thought in the four years they had known him. But she wouldn't lie; she wanted to protect us just like we wanted to protect her.
"What's your plan?" she asked. "We need to tell him everything, especially that Victoria is in danger," Max said. By this point, Chloe was fully convinced from our explanation. The look in her eyes showed it. "Okay… you guys have been through so much… I believe you, guys. After all, I'm still your faithful companion," she told us.
"Okay, so listen, in a few minutes, we won't remember that any of this happened. We need to stay at your house and do nothing. We explain to David about everything and we let him do his job. When Max and I come out of this, you gotta tell us what happened," I explained to Chloe.
"Will you guys believe me?" Chloe asked. Max and I took Chloe's hands as the white fuzzy feeling came back. "We'll always believe you, Chloe," Max said right before everything went white.
