The afternoon had grown chilly, the sun casting a soft orange glow over the horizon as the two travelers continued on their path. The world around them was quiet, and though the temperature dropped, the brief warmth of the setting sun brought a sense of calm. Fall was settling in, and the wind picked up, rustling the remaining leaves and hinting at the cold night ahead. Both Naruto and Hinata shivered slightly as they walked, pulling their cloaks closer against the chill.

The silence between them grew awkward, each step magnifying the distance between their thoughts. Finally, unable to bear it any longer, Hinata summoned the courage to speak.

"I-I know it's n-not my place," she stammered, "b-but the girl in the picture… who is she?"

Naruto's expression hardened, his gaze fixed ahead. "You're right. It isn't your business," he replied bluntly, not even glancing her way. The edge in his voice left no room for further questions, but Hinata caught a slight tension in his posture, his fists clenched tightly at his sides.

A wave of regret washed over her as she stopped, dropping her pack onto the cold ground with a dull thud and bowing her head. "I… I'm sorry for asking," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Naruto stopped as well, sighing as he turned back. Without a word, he bent down, picked up her bag, and held it out to her. Hinata looked up hesitantly, taking her bag as she tried to meet his gaze, but he quickly turned away, avoiding her eyes. She nodded, understanding the message: keep moving.

They resumed their journey in silence, the tension hanging thick in the crisp air. Hinata's gaze remained downward, guilt gnawing at her as they trudged along the forest path. The occasional gust of cold wind bit into her skin, pulling her cloak tighter as she tried to shake off the heavy atmosphere.

Night fell quickly, blanketing the forest in shadows and bringing an even colder chill. The air seemed to sharpen, the wind carrying whispers through the trees. Naruto glanced back, watching Hinata huddle into herself, her arms crossed tightly over her chest as she shivered. Her breath was visible in the air, her lips pale from the cold.

It's freezing, he thought, scanning the area for a suitable camping spot. Finding a small clearing sheltered by trees, he nodded to himself. "We'll set up camp here," he announced, gesturing to the open space. "We'll continue at first light."

Hinata nodded, setting her bag down and hugging her knees for warmth as she sat, her gaze distant.

"Stay here," he added. "I'm going to gather firewood."

She only gave a small nod, her focus still elsewhere. Naruto rolled his eyes, muttering to himself as he unsheathed his swords and moved into the darkness, his blade slicing easily through branches as he collected wood. Why am I so worked up about her question? he wondered, the sting of guilt gnawing at him.

With a frustrated "Tsch," he clenched his jaw and set to gather the wood more aggressively than necessary. Eventually, he headed back, his mind wandering as he gazed at the stars, only to stop in his tracks when he saw Hinata still sitting quietly, trembling in the cold.

Naruto approached her without a word, pulling off his cloak and draping it over her shoulders. Hinata looked up, surprise softening her gaze as she met his eyes, the warmth of his gesture lingering between them. She tried to read his expression, but he quickly turned away, focusing on arranging the wood to start a fire.

Within minutes, the crackling flames illuminated the clearing, casting a warm glow on their faces as they both held their hands out to the heat. Naruto couldn't help but smile at the fire's familiar comfort, enjoying the way the warmth wrapped around him. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Hinata's delicate hands reaching out toward the flame, her cheeks flushed as she closed her eyes, soaking in the heat.

After a while, Naruto prepared the instant ramen he had brought along. They sat in companionable silence, sipping the hot broth and relishing the warmth. Nothing tasted quite as satisfying as ramen on a cold night, he thought.

"She was someone I knew," he said, breaking the silence.

Hinata looked up, surprised. "Huh?" she mumbled, her expression softening. She hadn't expected him to share anything after the way he'd reacted earlier. She realized a noodle had caught at the corner of her mouth, and she quickly wiped it away, blushing.

"Thank you," she said quietly, her voice warm.

Naruto set down his cup, shrugging off the strange sense of vulnerability that had crept in. "Get some sleep," he said briskly as he stood and moved to climb one of the nearby trees.

"W-What about you?" Hinata asked, pulling her blanket around her shoulders.

"I'll watch over you, so don't worry about it," he replied, bracing himself against the trunk of the tree.

She hesitated, her gaze lingering on him as he settled into a branch above her. "A-Alright… goodnight," she said, her cheeks flushed as she rolled into her sleeping bag. Naruto chuckled to himself, catching her blush just before she burrowed in.

The night passed uneventfully, and as dawn broke, the first light filtering through the trees, Naruto stretched, feeling the stiffness in his muscles. He leaped down from the branch, landing softly as he yawned and shook off the morning chill.

He walked over to Hinata's sleeping bag and gave it a gentle poke. "There's a snake in your bag," he said, a mischievous glint in his eye.

Hinata bolted upright, her eyes wide as she searched her bag, only to realize he was teasing her. "Y-You scared me!"

"Good," he replied with a smirk. "It's time to get moving anyway."

They broke camp quickly, though Naruto noticed her struggling to roll her sleeping bag properly. After watching her fumble for a minute, he sighed, taking the bag and rolling it neatly before handing it back to her. "Here."

Hinata nodded, stammering a "Thank you" as they resumed their journey through the forest.

They traveled in silence, breaking for a simple lunch of rice balls Hinata had prepared in secret. Naruto raised an eyebrow, surprised that she'd managed to make them without him noticing, but he said nothing, enjoying the quiet meal. By noon, they had reached a cliff overlooking their destination: the town of Noble's Cape.

"W-Wow!" Hinata gasped, her face lighting up as she took in the view. The town lay nestled among the trees, its rooftops catching the light and giving off a welcoming glow. The aroma of distant smoke and baking bread drifted up from below, mingling with the scent of pine.

Naruto took a seat at the cliff's edge, one leg dangling over as he gazed down at the town, his thoughts elsewhere. He wondered if someone he knew was still in town, but he kept his musings to himself, trying to focus on their next steps.

Hinata stole a glance at him, her heart fluttering as she caught the serious, thoughtful look in his eyes. She looked away quickly, trying to ignore the warmth in her cheeks.

As they approached the town gates, their excitement faded. The gates were locked tight, with guards standing vigilant. Hinata's expression fell, worry creasing her brow as she looked to Naruto for answers.

He shook his head. "The gates are probably closed because of the coming war. They're not letting anyone in." Noticing her disappointment, he placed a hand on her shoulder. "You said you trusted me, right?"

Hinata nodded slowly, still unsure. "Y-Yes, of course…"

Naruto gently pulled her hood over her head, blocking her view, and lifted her into his arms. She stiffened in surprise, panic flashing in her eyes as she struggled in his grip.

"Stay still," he commanded softly. "You said you'd trust me."

Hinata hesitated, then nodded, relaxing slightly as he held her securely. Moving swiftly, Naruto scanned the area to ensure they were alone, his focus sharpening as he took off toward the wall surrounding the town. He didn't earn his reputation as "Akuma" for nothing. He summoned a strength deep within, feeling the familiar energy rise, sharpening his senses.

With a quick burst of speed, he scaled the wall, landing quietly at the top. Hinata clung to him, her heart pounding as she felt the wind rush around them, her stomach flipping as they leaped down the other side.

As soon as they landed, Naruto set her down, smirking as she straightened her hood and glared at him, breathless. "N-Never do that again!" she exclaimed, cheeks flushed with a mixture of fear and exhilaration.

He chuckled, raising an eyebrow as he gestured to the bustling town around them. "Take a look. We're inside."

Hinata's eyes widened in wonder. "H-How did you do that?"

He shrugged, offering her a small grin before turning toward the heart of town. "Come on. Let's get a room. I need some sleep."

She watched him with wide eyes, catching a glimpse of red in his eyes before his usual blue returned. She shivered, an old memory stirring, but she quickly dismissed it. There was no way this could be the same person from that terrifying night years ago.

They moved through the town's cobblestone streets, their cloaks drawn close, blending in with the crowds. Naruto led the way toward a familiar inn, not missing the sideways glances they received from some of the locals.

"Hinata, I need to stop by a bar and see if someone I know is here," he said, his tone casual, though he noticed her growing silence.

Just as he was about to ask if something was wrong, he felt a tug on his arm, and suddenly, a blade was pressed lightly against his throat.

"You don't even visit? Not a single letter?" a teasing voice said from behind him, the blade owner's tone playful.

"Relax, it's only Tenten," he muttered, recognizing the familiar voice.

"Tenten?" Hinata said, bewildered as she clutched her dagger, ready to intervene.

"Oh, don't worry, sweetheart," Tenten said with a smirk, lowering the blade. "I'll forgive your girlfriend this time."

Naruto rolled his eyes. "She's not my girlfriend," he replied sharply. "And I didn't send a letter because I didn't have time."

Without warning, he turned the tables, twisting Tenten's arm in a quick motion, his own blade now at her back. She laughed, her gaze mischievous. "You haven't changed a bit," she whispered, leaning closer with a wink.

Naruto quickly released her, sighing. "Enough games. I need a room for the night."

"For you?" Tenten raised an eyebrow, grinning. "Only if you can keep up."

Naruto grumbled, fishing out some coins and handing them over. "Fine. We'll take a single room."

"Both of you?" she teased, eyeing Hinata. "Should I add extra blankets?"

"Just the room," he replied, pinching the bridge of his nose.

Tenten handed him the key, flashing him a knowing look. "Enjoy, lovebirds."

Naruto shook his head, grabbing Hinata's hand and leading her out before she could stammer a reply. The innkeeper's laughter echoed behind them as they made their way down the hall.

Once inside their room, Naruto gestured to the bathroom. "Go shower and get comfortable," he said, stretching out on the floor.

Hinata hesitated, watching him settle on his makeshift bed. She felt a mixture of relief and disappointment, but she nodded, disappearing into the bathroom. The warm water soothed her, washing away the day's aches, but her mind wandered back to Naruto. Was he the kind of protective person she had begun to see him as? Or was there something else lurking beneath his calm exterior?

After drying off, she stepped out of the bathroom to find him sound asleep on the floor, his cloak thrown over him like a blanket. Smiling softly, she walked over and draped an extra blanket over him. He sighed, sinking deeper into his slumber, looking as peaceful as he had by the campfire.

As she crawled into bed, a soft smile spread over her face as she remembered his kindness and his strength. She had once been haunted by the image of a masked man with red eyes, but tonight, she saw only the gentle, protective face of the blond man who had taken her under his wing.

"Goodnight, Naruto," she whispered, her heart light as she drifted into sleep, dreaming of the whiskered boy who had stolen her heart years ago.

Drip… drip…

Here again?

Naruto stared at his reflection in the murky sewer water, the dim light casting shadows around the all-too-familiar place. This was where his darkest thoughts lingered, where the cage of his demon waited.

Before him loomed a massive, ominous gate, its bars stretching high above. From behind them came a low, menacing growl that echoed through the vast chamber, vibrating every pipe and wall.

Unfazed, Naruto took a step closer, his expression hardening as a gigantic claw slammed down just before him. The beast within the cage laughed, a chilling, deep rumble that seemed to fill the room.

What's so funny? Naruto's voice was calm, and challenging.

Come closer, and I'll show you, the Kyuubi taunted, its voice dripping with malice.

The Kyuubi—once a terror unleashed upon the world, now sealed within him. The source of so much hate and evil.

I don't have time for this.

Watch yourself, brat, the Kyuubi warned, its eyes gleaming through the bars. I can sense your weakness.

Naruto clenched his fists, his anger barely contained.

Naruto's eyes opened slowly, heavy from the strange dream. His body felt sore, yet he was unusually warm. After a long moment battling against the comfort of his blankets, he forced himself to get up, stretching until his bones popped, releasing the tension from his sleep. He sighed, feeling both refreshed and restless.

Hinata was still deep in slumber, her face peaceful in the early dark. A glance out the window revealed that it was still pitch-black outside, the stars hidden by clouds. Guess that's what happens when you sleep too early, he thought, a small smirk forming.

He picked up his pack, rummaging through it until he found a familiar piece of paper, reading over its contents again.

Hyuga. Buyer: Galoorn. Sold by: Miga Keshi. Locations: Thieves' Landing, Noble's Cape, Land of Stars…? Miga Keshi, that little coward? He couldn't have kidnapped her on his own.

Naruto's thoughts drifted to Miga, the alias of a conniving young thief—a rat of a man with a scrawny build, a face half-hidden by long, unkempt hair, and an obnoxiously big mouth. Miga was known for his cunning, his cowardice, and his knack for surviving by betraying those around him.

Your days are numbered, Miga, Naruto thought, his expression darkening.

The thrill of the hunt was something he hadn't felt in a long time. This was no subtle stalking of prey but a full pursuit, his instincts sharpened by the promise of revenge. His goal wasn't merely to confront Miga; he was going to kill him.

The night was cold as Naruto walked the empty streets, dressed in black and clutching his sword. He ignored the scattered drunks, filling their bellies with rum and laughing loudly as they stumbled along. A bar loomed in the distance, dim light spilling from its door. He pushed through, stepping into the bustling space filled with gamblers, singers, and the rowdy clinks of glasses. Silence fell over the patrons as they took in the hooded figure.

Naruto ignored their stares, heading straight for the bar, where the bartender was polishing mugs with an annoyed look on his face.

"What can I get you, stranger?" the bartender asked, his tone dismissive.

"A cup of your cheapest wine," Naruto replied. The bartender poured the drink, slamming it onto the bar with enough force to make some of the wine spills.

Naruto drank it in one go, wincing. "That's terrible."

"You did say the cheapest," the bartender replied, smirking as he returned to his cleaning.

Naruto set his cup down, leaning in. "Where can I find Miga?"

The bartender didn't meet his gaze, wiping the mug with the same slow rhythm. "Never heard of him. And I'd suggest you leave before you're thrown out."

A small smirk spread across Naruto's face. All bark…

"What if I told you a master thief was looking for him?" Naruto's voice held a dark edge.

"Then I'd tell him to come here himsel—"

Naruto tilted his hood back slightly, just enough to reveal his eyes. The bartender froze, his face paling as he took in the blood-red glint. Naruto grabbed him by the collar, dragging him across the bar to meet his unblinking stare.

Around him, men dropped their mugs, hands drifting to weapons as they eyed him warily.

The bartender raised a shaky hand, calling out, "I-It's fine, everyone! Put your weapons down!"

Naruto leaned closer, his grip unyielding. "Tell me where to find him."

Fear was a powerful motivator, one Naruto knew well. It could drive a person to desperate lengths for survival. It was what he thrived on in moments like these, watching the helpless terror in a man's eyes.

From the bartender's trembling directions, Naruto quickly located Miga's hideout—a decaying warehouse on the outskirts of town, abandoned except for a few stragglers and remnants of old machinery. Naruto crouched on a high ledge, his eyes narrowing as he spotted Miga below, nervously pacing as he ordered his henchmen about.

"Let's move again," one of Miga's companions suggested, her voice a worried whisper.

"Shut up!" Miga snapped, waving her off. "I'm not going anywhere!"

You should have, Naruto thought, dropping silently to the ground. His landing sent a faint tremor through the metal floor, dust kicking up around him.

Miga spun around, his face paling. "A-Akuma!" he stammered, his voice quivering.

Naruto's gaze was fixed, unblinking as he approached. "You should have run while you had the chance, Miga."

The fear in Miga's eyes deepened, but then Naruto noticed something strange—a flicker of confidence on Miga's face, a small smirk tugging at his lips.

What's he so confident about?

The question barely formed before Naruto sensed a presence behind him. He spun just in time to dodge a massive, serrated blade slicing toward his neck. The wielder, a tall, silver-haired man, sneered as he held up a strand of Naruto's hair, his eyes glinting with excitement.

"Goddamn it! I was so close to taking your head off! Shit! Shit! Shit!" the man hissed, fury in his voice.

Naruto's hand went instinctively to his neck, his pulse racing as he realized how narrowly he'd escaped. He recognized this newcomer: Hidan, another Masterthief like himself, an infamous assassin known for his brutality and rumored immortality. Naruto had heard the stories—a madman possessed by a demon known as the Angel of Death.

"Hidan, thank heavens you're here!" Miga crowed, his relief palpable. "Protect me!"

"Shut the fuck up," Hidan snarled, his gaze never leaving Naruto. "I'm about to have fun." He smirked, cracking his knuckles. "Akuma… I've always wanted to take you down."

The atmosphere in the warehouse thickened as Naruto and Hidan stared each other down, an electric tension sparking between them. Naruto's blood-red eyes narrowed, his focus razor-sharp as he sized up his opponent. Hidan sneered back, excitement gleaming in his wild, violet eyes as he adjusted his grip on the massive, serrated scythe resting on his shoulder.

"Finally, face to face with the famous Akuma," Hidan said with a wicked grin, his voice laced with madness. "You have no idea how long I've wanted this, Masterthief against another Masterthief…Exciting!"

Without warning, Hidan lunged forward, swinging his scythe in a deadly arc. Naruto ducked just in time, feeling the blade whip past, slicing through the air with a high-pitched whistle. Hidan was relentless, twisting his body into the momentum of the strike and bringing the scythe around for another attack, faster and with a brutal intensity.

Naruto sidestepped, letting the scythe's blade skim past his shoulder, close enough to feel the rush of air. He dropped low, sweeping a leg out to knock Hidan off-balance. Hidan stumbled, gritting his teeth as he dug his heels into the ground and yanked the scythe back with a powerful twist, forcing Naruto to dodge to the side.

In an instant, Naruto was behind him, a blur of speed and shadow, his fist aimed for Hidan's spine. But Hidan spun around, blocking the punch with the handle of his scythe, their eyes locking as Naruto's fist collided with the cold metal.

"Oh, you're quick," Hidan sneered, twisting the scythe handle to force Naruto back. "But I'm better!"

Hidan pressed forward, his movements fluid yet erratic, each swing of his scythe closer than the last. Naruto's senses were on high alert, each step calculated as he weaved through the onslaught, evading the razor-sharp blade by mere inches.

Seeing an opening, Naruto seized the scythe handle with one hand, locking Hidan's weapon in place as he drove his knee up into Hidan's gut. Hidan let out a choked gasp, momentarily stunned, but he twisted his body, slamming an elbow into Naruto's jaw. Naruto staggered back, tasting blood, but his gaze remained fixed, his fury only growing.

"That all you fuckin' got?" Hidan laughed, wiping a trickle of blood from the corner of his mouth. He grinned, clearly savoring the fight, and his eyes gleamed with a crazed light. "I thought you'd be more impressive, Akuma."

Naruto's gaze darkened, his fists clenched as he felt the Kyuubi's energy pulse within him, his canines sharpening. He could feel his control slipping, raw power begging to be unleashed, but he gritted his teeth, staying focused on his opponent.

Hidan charged again, swinging his scythe in a ruthless arc aimed for Naruto's throat. This time, Naruto caught the scythe's handle, stopping the blade mid-swing with a powerful grip. Hidan's eyes widened in shock, and with a growl, Naruto twisted the weapon free, yanking it from Hidan's grasp and flinging it across the warehouse.

Before Hidan could react, Naruto was on him, landing a brutal punch to his face that sent him reeling. He followed with a knee to Hidan's stomach, each hit carrying the weight of his rage. Hidan staggered back, blood dripping from his mouth, but instead of fear, he wore a twisted smile, his eyes lighting up with feverish delight.

"So it is true! Your half fuckin demon!" he cried, laughing as he stumbled to his feet. "Give me everything you've got!"

Naruto's eyes narrowed, and his body tensed as he prepared for the next attack. But Hidan reached into his jacket, pulling out a wickedly curved knife. Without breaking eye contact, he plunged the knife into his stomach, twisting the blade with a sickening crunch.

A blinding pain flared in Naruto's side, mirroring Hidan's wound. He doubled over, clutching his stomach, his vision blurring as he struggled to understand what had just happened.

"Feeling that?" Hidan chuckled, wrenching the knife out with a sickening squelch. "I told you, Akuma. I'm immortal, and you're fighting on my terms now."

Naruto gritted his teeth, willing the pain away as he steadied his breathing, forcing his focus back on Hidan. He wouldn't let this psycho win.

Hidan smirked, circling him like a predator scenting blood. "The thing about immortality, Akuma, is that I don't have to worry about getting hurt. But you?" He laughed, his voice echoing through the dark, empty warehouse. "You're bleeding just fine."

Naruto clenched his fists, feeling the Kyuubi's energy rage within him, begging to be released. He met Hidan's gaze, his own eyes glinting with the red fury of the Kyuubi. His skin began to heat, his senses sharpening as he tapped into the beast's power.

In a flash, Naruto lunged forward, his hand glowing with the fiery red chakra as he aimed for Hidan's heart. Hidan dodged, but Naruto's attack was relentless, each strike more powerful and precise than the last. Hidan was laughing, blocking each attack with disturbing ease, but Naruto could sense the exhaustion creeping into his opponent's movements.

Naruto feinted left, then spun around, catching Hidan off-guard and landing a powerful kick to his ribs, sending him crashing into a stack of crates. Wood splintered, dust billowing into the air as Hidan struggled to get up, his breath ragged.

"You're nothing but a puppet," Naruto spat, his voice low and dangerous. "Immortal or not, I'll break you."

Hidan staggered to his feet, clutching his side, his face twisted with rage. "Let's keep dancing!"

He pulled his scythe back from the debris and charged, his swings wild but brutal, each strike intended to maim, not kill. Naruto dodged and parried, feeling the sting of shallow cuts from near-misses, but he kept his movements fluid, waiting for his chance.

And then he saw it—a fraction of a second where Hidan's guard dropped. Naruto moved, faster than Hidan could react, sidestepping a scythe swing and grabbing Hidan's arm, twisting it behind his back. With a feral snarl, Naruto drove his elbow into the back of Hidan's neck, sending him face-first into the ground.

But Hidan was laughing again, his voice a guttural rasp. "You think that's enough? I'm just getting started!"

Hidan twisted, flipping back up and lunging forward. Naruto barely dodged as Hidan's blade grazed his cheek, blood spilling onto the floor. Hidan grinned, licking the blood from his scythe as if savoring it.

"That's it," Naruto growled, his voice deepening, the Kyuubi's influence taking over. His nails lengthened, his muscles tensed as a dark aura surrounded him. His teeth sharpened, and his once-steady breathing now came in short, feral bursts.

In a single, blurred movement, Naruto lunged, his claws raking across Hidan's chest, tearing through skin and muscle. Hidan staggered, clutching the deep gashes across his chest, his smirk finally faltering as he stared at Naruto with wide eyes.

"Die," Naruto snarled, his voice a low, guttural growl. He brought his fist down, aiming for Hidan's heart, ready to end the fight.

But just as he was about to strike, Hidan twisted, jamming his scythe's blade into Naruto's shoulder. Naruto hissed in pain, stumbling back as blood streamed down his arm.

"Not so easy, is it, Akuma?" Hidan taunted, his voice strained but triumphant. He pressed his advantage, each strike of his scythe more vicious, each laugh more unhinged.

Naruto gritted his teeth, feeling his strength waning as he blocked the scythe with his forearm, the blade cutting into his skin. With a burst of energy, he shoved Hidan back, creating a few feet of distance between them.

Hidan staggered, but he was grinning, his body swaying with exhaustion yet refusing to quit. "Let's see how much more you can take," he sneered, wiping a trail of blood from his mouth.

Naruto felt the world tilt, his vision dimming from blood loss, his shoulder throbbing. I need to get out of here.

With a glance, he spotted a nearby window, and in one swift motion, he hurled a dagger at Hidan's neck. Hidan gasped as the blade embedded itself in his throat, his hands clawing at the handle. Taking the opening, Naruto dashed toward the window, crashing through the glass and into the night.

I have to get back to Hinata…

He could feel blood pouring from his wounds, each step heavier than the last, but he pushed forward, his only thought on reaching her before it was too late.
