Thom loved seeing Elayne happy or at least close to. He knew she still cried after Rand, but now her children kept her up. Just after he left, a wave of sadness hit him and he pushed to move faster to a set of rooms Moiraine and he shared.

There was nothing amiss at first sight, not really. Moiraine was deeper in, by the pleasant fireplace. He called out to her, but received no answer. She was still other than her hands that kept weaving One Power, manipulating the fire.

His heart sank. This fire was one thing he knew could bring her self confidence down. Starting a fire, making it a little bigger was the extent of her abilities now. Moiraine kept taking the bracelet off and trying how much she could do. Pushing, hoping that one day something would change.

Nothing ever did.

He did the only thing that worked – sat by her and hugged her, murmuring a ballad into her ear. This had brought her back gradually until she was willing to stand up and be led to bed. Thom made sure to stock the fire well before joining her. Keeping the fire going through the night after an incident like that was very important.

This fire kept Moiraine's going.
