Chapter 8: Trip to the Bank
They would not believe their eyes. When Hargid opens up the backyard wall by tapping on certain bricks, they are greeted with the sight of a long winding street completely filled with hundreds of people. The street is so busy that you could barely see the cobblestone road they tread on. Luffy and Nami had never seen such a commotion before, not even when they traverse to more civilised nations like Alabasta or Water 7. Hell, even Dressrosa back when Doflamingo ruled as king wasn't this mad, and most of the populace were turned into toys.
However it was a nice change for once for Luffy and Nami, ever since they found the One Piece the Straw Hat's reputation was so high it made it impossible for the Pirate King's crew to settle on land without people running away from them or the Navy on persuit. It shows that being in this world benefical for they are not known. However, it doesn't hurt to stay cautious as Nami and Luffy made sure to keep daughters close.
"Heh, looks nice don't it?" said Hagrid
"Is it always this busy?" said Harry
"Oh you 'ave no idea" said Hagrid as he smiles under his thick long beard. "Of all the places in the wizarding world, Diagon Alley is the best place to get everything you need, has been for 'undreds of years."
"And the only way to get there is going though that musty old pub?" said Nami
"Now, now, the Leaky Cauldron might seen better days, but it never lost it's charm." Said Hargrid "Been going there for nearly 40 years and believe me, the drinks Tom serves are legendary."
"If that's true, then Zoro will be alright" Luffy jests as he knows his swordsman likes to drink when not training. "He won't cause any trouble."
Nami however isn't assured, Zoro is known to unintendedly cause trouble, especially when he wanders off. She doesn't trust him alone anymore since his od habit of getting lost is well enough to worry about.
"Anyway, let's head for Gringotts, it's not far. Come on" said Hagrid as he makes way through the recently formed archway and walks onto the streets. Due to his massive build, he can easily part the busy crowd so that Harry and his family can follow with ease and get a good look at the place.
The shops on both sides each contain their own unusual wares for sale, they are even piled out on display for everyone to see and be interested in buying them. As they pass them, he noticed a few that he needed for Hogwarts, such as cauldrons, quills, parchments, even owls either caged or resting on perches, watching every passer-by on the street.
But it's not just strange things that are being sold, for there are shops that would consider normal in comparison, such as apothecaries selling ingredients which are used for potions (then again, a certain doctor would be interested going to restock in the Sunny's Infirmary).
"7 sickles an ounce? You must be joking!" An old witch was yelling out from inside the apothacary, Harry peeps through to see her complaining about the prices of a potions ingredient. "Last time it was 2 sickles and 5 knuts!"
Next, they went pass a bookshop called "Flourish and Blotts" that sell variety of spell books and other forms of wizarding literature (something that Robin would like to poke her nose on). But what got Harry's attention is a shop called "2nd Hand Brooms", where they sell Broomsticks.
He makes his way to that shop, where the other kids at around his age are gazing through the window where a beautiful broomstick is on display, smooth, varnished and the handle is made of mahogany, the tail looks nearly trimmed as there are no twigs sticking out. But what got Harry's attention is the name on the head engraved in gold read "Nimbus 2000".
"It's the latest model, said to be the fastest broom ever" said one of the young boys in the crowd. "But there is no way any of us can afford that, look at how much they're asking, down right criminal."
"I know, I'd be lucky with getting a Comet model than a Nimbus"
Harry doesn't seem to be listening to the boys as he is still eyeing at the broomstick behind the window. Oh, he would love to fly on that broomstick, especially when it is named after a cloud.
Suddenly, Harry's attention on the broom was cut short when Nami tapped his shoulder.
"Harry, you mustn't wander off" said Nami as she brings Harry back to the group. Hinagiku and Belle rolled their eyes at Harry for admiring the broomsticks since they are used for flying. With Harry back, Hagrid continues on with leading them to what seems to a tall marble building with the words Gringotts Bank above a curved row of pillars in front of a pair of massive bronze doors.
"There we are, Gringotts" said Hagrid as he gazes up with a smile at the bank. "You won't find another safer place in the world...well 'cept maybe 'Ogwarts"
"And Harry's money is stored there?" said Luffy
"Of course, as mentioned before, 'arry's mum and dad made sure that 'e 'as ev'rything ready for his studies" said Hagrid as he makes his way towards the doors and opens them. But before he does, the doors suddenly opens with someone exiting them.
However, this...person isn't human, not only is he short, but he has a pair of pointed ears, pointed nose and clawed fingers. This creature doesn't seem to notice or care that there are people entering the bank as he is just passing by.
"That would be a Goblin, they work in Gringotts" said Hagrid
"A goblin? Goblins exists?" Nami exclaimed in shock
"Of course, why wouldn't they?" said Hagrid until he realised something. "Oh right, you're not from 'round here. I reckon you don't have goblins or seen one before?"
"No, we met giants, dwarves, fishmen, mermaids, and Minks" said Luffy "But not goblins, we believe them be fantasy."
"Huh, how strange" said Hagrid before he opens up the doors and offers the family to enter.
Gringotts Bank
As they enter, they are instantly greeted with another pair of doors, except they are silver. Hagrid was about to open them when Nami starts to ask Hagrid a question.
"You mentioned that Gringotts is safe, meaning that it never had a break in? No robberies?" said Nami with a curious raise of her brow.
"Not one, plus you'd be mad thinkin' of robbin' Gringotts" said Hagrid
"Why is that?" said Nami getting more curious, too curious that Luffy and Harry becoming nervous as they know what Nami is like when it comes with money.
"Well...I suggest you ready this on the door" said Hagrid as he points at the silver door. There appears to be some sort of poem engraved on them. And the words reads:
Enter, Stranger, but take heed
Of what awaits the sin of Greed
For those who take, but do not earn,
Must pay most dearly in their turn.
So if you seek beneath our floors,
A treasure that was never yours.
Thief, you have been warned, beware
Of finding more than treasure there.
After reading this, Nami felt a sudden chill run down her spine, even Usopp would faint in terror by that ominous poem. It doesn't help matters when Luffy starts turning his head towards Nami, causing the navigator to flinch when seeing her husband's grim look.
"O-oh come off it, can't seriously believe that there are consequences in trying to rob the bank" said Nami "a bank's a bank, the worst you can face is getting caught and arrested."
"I don't know" said Hagrid "When it comes to Goblins, anything could happen. Especially when they can get real mean to anyone who has any intention of robbing. And Like I said, do not mess with Goblins."
Deciding to take Hagrid's warning by heart, Luffy and Nami nods at the half-giant before he can open the second set of doors so they can enter he bank. When they walk across, they end up entering a vast hallway, it is exactly what a bank should look like, twin row of desks with goblins clerks sitting by, scrolling on banking ledgers, counting piles of gold, silver and copper coins, or weighing large gemstones on brass scales to determine their worth and value.
The wealth displayed on the desks caught Nami's eyes, and who can blame her as she is completely allued by the shine of gold and silver. Especially the large gemstones being weighted on the scales, some which varies in size from chicken eggs to mangos. The Goblins seems to notice Nami's sparking stare at the money and jewels that they all start to leer dangerously at her. This worked rather well for the Navigator/Queen avert her eyes and starts to looking down at the polished floor and at her ashamed reflection. Luffy comforts her with a gentle pat and pulls her in his one-armed embrace, this helps Nami as it makes her feel safe, safe from the hostile and judgemental looks from the Goblin clerks in every desk.
Harry and his sisters curiously look around at the main hall of the bank, looking side to side while passing the row of desks which the goblins continue to work on.
"Hagrid, do humans work in the bank"
"Oh yes, but not everyone is very keen in that idea." Said Hagrid "In fact I know someone who finished 'Ogwarts a few years ago, workin' in the Egyptian branch of Gringotts as a Curse-breaker."
"A curse-breaker?" said Harry "What's that?"
"It's obvious, Harry" said Belle giving Harry a bonk on the head. "They break curses on items, correct?"
"That's right, good ol' Bill is the best when it comes to breaking curse" said Hagrid with a smile "You see, there are witches and wizards who like to dabble in the dark arts that they would place curses on personal items which they store on vaults, which is highly illegal under the...er, well there is a law against cursed items, especially when placed in Gringotts. Anyway, Witches and Wizards with high O. and N.E. on the Defense against the Dark Arts are hired as Curse-Breaker. They would seek out those cursed items in the vaults and destroy them, and from what Bill told me, it sounds dangerous and thrilling, especially when Gringotts once sent him to explore an ancient vault in South America."
"There's treasure in this world?" said Nami
"I think so, if Gringotts believe so, then yes" said Hagrid when suddenly he reached the desk where the Bank Manager is working in. The manager is also a Goblin, but he is slightly older due to his white side hairs and a bald top. He is currently writing on a ledger to even notice Hagrid, that is until the Half-Giant starts to clear his throat to get his attention. The bank manager looks up to leer at Hagrid, he is partially annoyed at the bearded man interrupting him on his work, but immediately knows that he is in fact a patron for service.
"May I help you?" said the Manager
"Mr. 'Arry Potter is here to make a withdrawal" said Hagrid as he gestured Harry for the Goblin Manager to notice him.
"And does Mr. Harry Potter have his key?" said the manager at Harry
"Hold up, I got it here" said Nami as she starts rummaging through her bag. It took a while as she has other things in her bag but she managed to pull out the bank key. "Ah ha, there we go."
The manager as takes the key from Nami and gives it a long deep look to check any signs of forgery.
"Seems to be in order" said manager as he returns the key to Harry instead of Nami, as he'll be using quite soon.
"Oh, and Professor Dumbledore wanted me to give you this"
As Nami place Harry's key on the desk for the manager to inspect, Hagrid also gave the manager a letter from Dumbledore, but has the words "Top Secret" in red ink.
"It's about the you-know-what in vault 713" said Hagrid in a low whisper which only the manager can hear. The Manager opens the letter and starts reading from it, he then looks up at Hagrid and nods.
"Very well" said the Manager as he then pulls out a bell and rings it. The ringing calls for one of the Goblins, who is slightly younger than the manager due to his combed back black hair and his face bearing less wrinkles.
"Griphook, take Mr. Potter to his vault" said the Manager before returning to the ledger. "Then take Mr. Hagrid to Vault 713"
"At once, sir" said Griphook with a bow and turns to Harry and Hagrid "Follow me please"
"You don't mind coming right?" said Luffy "As his father, it should be sensible to accompany him."
"Of course, parents are permitted to come" said Griphook, though his tone isn't that of politeness, rather than neutral and professional-like as he then takes his leave with Harry, Hagrid and Luffy following him. "This way"
With Harry and the men gone to follow the goblin, Nami remains in the hall and by the managers's desk, she approaches the desk where the manager is still working on the ledger. She clears her throat to get the old goblin's attention.
"Can I help you?" said the manager in a more irritated tone as he is once again dragged out of his work.
"Yes, I would like to open some accounts, please" said Nami
This got the goblin manager raising an bushy eyebrow while he stares at Nami with his beady black eyes. The other Goblins also look over at Nami when they heard her when she is not only wanting to open one account but a few.
"And I assume that you have something to pay for the installation" said the Manager "Mind you though, it won't come cheap"
Nami then pulls out a moderately sized leather pouch and drops it on the manager's desk, the pouch gave such a heavy drop along with the sound of rattling coins inside.
"You do take gold and jewels?" said Nami
The manager opens the pouch and was taken back when the sight of gold and silver coins, along with many jewels in so many colours starts to shine and sparkle in front of him. He closed the pouch and starts clearing his throat to that he can speak in a rather polite manner.
"I'm sure that can be arranged, follow me please" said the manager as he jumps off from his desk and guides Nami and her daughters to one of the private offices so they can speak in private. But not without the generous pouch full of riches that Nami brought with her.
The Goblins watch the manager take the Navigator/Queen to the private office and starts to murmur in their language known as Gobbledegook, it is unclear to non-goblins on what they're saying, but their tone of voices does express excitement, especially when a few starts rubbing their hands greedily since they are about to make a huge profit.
Meanwhile at the Vaults
"WOOHOO!"
Harry and Luffy are having a time of their lives during their way to the vaults, Hagrid failed to mention that the way to the vaults is by riding a cart, but unlike the carts used in mines, the ride is more like a wild roller-coaster due to their sharp turns and spinning curves. Plus the cart is going so fast that it's hard to figure out where they are going. Hagrid on the other hand isn't enjoying the ride as he is trying not to hurl.
The ride lasted about 5 minutes but it was quite fun and thrilling for the King and Prince of the pirates as this reminds them of the fairground back in Sabaody Archipelago. They laughed and cheered with every drip, with every turn and with every spin, but the cart ride ends however as they have reached their destination.
"Ha ha ha, that was awesome!" said Luffy as he jumps out of the cart. "Hagrid, why didn't you tell me that Gringotts has a wild cart ride."
"Must've...err...slipped my mind" said Hagrid as he is now leaning on one of the thick stalagmites while he recovers from his dizziness and nausea. "Not sure how, since I hated those things."
Harry looks around to see himself completely deep underground, right in the vast caverns ordained with jutting stalagmites, hanging stalactites, rail-lines for other carts to lead to other vaults which are lined up on the walls on each level. He looks down to wonder how deep this cavern goes, but Hagrid pulls him away as he doesn't want to risk Harry falling off.
"Please Harry, stay away from the ledge" said Hagrid as he feels a bit better.
Griphook was last to get off the cart and starts to walk to one of the big wrought iron doors that lined across the cavern walls.
"Vault 687, this way please" said Griphook as he gestures Harry and Luffy to the numbed bank vault. "Key please"
Harry gives Griphook his bank key so that he can open the door.
"Is there a reason I have to give you my key to you?" said Harry
"It's protocol, only goblins can open the vaults" said Griphook as he turns the key in the lock. Suddenly thick green smoke starts to fume out once the door slowly opens. "Anyone else tries to open these vaults...well, I hope you planned your funeral and wrote down your last will & testament."
Once the vault clears itself from the green smoke, Griphook them allows Harry to enter. Harry and Luffy walks in and they would not believe they are looking at. Harry was expecting a small fortune, but what they are seeing is an overstatement. Piles of gold, bundles of silver and heaps of copper are stored within this vault, all for Harry to do as he please.
"It's a good thing your mother isn't here or else she'd die from a heart attack" Luffy joked while he pat Harry's shoulder. "Come on, take what you need"
"Right" said Harry as he then make his way towards the pile of coins. He then stops as he realise something and turns to Griphook. "Excuse me, but I but can you tell me the monetary value of these coins?"
"Of course" said Griphook as he is happy to explain how the monetary system works to Harry. "There are 3 type of coins we use here, the bronze ones are called knuts, silver ones are sickles and the gold are galleons. 17 sickles to a Galleon, and 29 knuts to a Sickle"
"So, there are 493 knuts in a Galleon" said Harry
"That's correct, very impressive" said Griphook who is very impressed with Harry quick estimation. "Glad to hear you paid attention."
"Well, my mum is very sensible around money, and she wants me to be sensible too...mostly" said Harry as he then starts to figure out how much he should take. "I might take a while"
"Very well, please close the door when you're done. They lock up when shut." said Griphook as he then leaves the vault and approaches Hagrid "To Vault 713, follow me"
Hagrid nods and follows the goblin.
It did take harry some time to estimate how much he need to buy his school equipment, he took a good handful of Galleons and Sickles to put in his pouch, along with some knuts just in case. With that, Harry and Luffy leaves the vault and closes it. The door suddenly clicks as the locks automatically turn to secure the vault now that it's finished with.
"Ready" said Harry while he bounce the money pouch in his hand.
"Good, looks like Hargid is also" said Luffy as he sees Hagrid and Griphook return to where the cart is parked. "Got everything?"
"Aye, time to go" said Hagrid
"What's in vault 713?" Harry asked Hagrid
"Can't tell ya" said Hagrid "Hogwarts business, very secret."
They all climb in the magic cart so that they can return to the surface, Harry and Luffy are very excited as they are about get another wild ride.
"Er...can we go a bit slow please" Hagrid asked Griphook
"One speed only" said Griphook with a non-caring tone when suddenly the magic starts to zoom across the tracks.
"Oh merlin help me!" Hagrid exclaims in discomfort while Harry and Luffy calls out.
"WOOHOO YEAH!"
Gringotts: Few Minutes earlier
Just when Harry, Luffy and Hagrid descend to the vaults, Nami remains at the main hall of Gringotts only to be escorted by the Bank Manager to one of the private officers. The goblin opens the office door and allows the Pirate Queen and her daughters inside.
The office has a very sofisticated look that rivals the main hall, but instead of marble t has wooden walls which has beautiful carvings and engravings, and the floor is layered out with dark but beautiful carpets, the office furnishing consists of a mahogany desk and leather chair behind it, along with a pair of comfortable armchairs facing the desk which Nami and her daughters sat on immediately. The manager smiles to see that Nami is not one to waste time during business as he then makes his way to the leather chair and elevates it so that his head and upper chest is seen above the desk.
The goblin leans his arms on the desk with interlocking his clawed fingers together so that he can begin with what Nami requires.
"Now then, you want to open multiple accounts" said the manager
"That is what I said" said Nami
"Excellent, if there is what we love more is more patrons providing our services." Said the manager. "We at Gringotts are more happy to assist you in storing your riches and making fair exchanges with your valuables and treasures. Now then, I trust that there are certain conditions for these additional vaults."
"that's right" said Nami "You see, where I come from, we make our profits by...questionable means"
"Questionable means?"
"We're pirates" said Belle speaking out to the manager.
"Belle!" Nami exclaimed with anger and worry before turning her attention on the Goblin Manager. She sighs at this now that the cat is out of the bag. "Aye, we are pirates."
"I see, so you go around raiding ports, boarding ships, stealing cargo, stealing treasure and smuggle contraband." Said the manager with an intrigued expression.
"Well, not exactly, unlike most pirates we do anything that would harm the innocent." Said Nami "We go after rival pirates, fight off the navy and rob corrupt merchants and arrogant selfish nobles."
"Yeah, we're good pirates!" said Hinagiku
"Hina, be quiet" said Nami scolding at her other daughter before turning again to the manager.
"And that help gain a high profit?" said manger
"You have no idea," said Nami "My husband is one of the most notorious pirates around, and our crew are quite...efficient when it comes to pirating. And we gained quite a haul."
"I see, well if that's the case. I would be happy to open as many accounts you desire" said Manager "Of course there is the case of various fees required to open them."
"And how much are you asking?" said Nami with a low frown as leers cautiously at the manager. "I warn you, I am not gullible. If you think of exploiting me..."
This only made the Goblin laugh, he is liking her very much.
"Oh I assure you, in order for Gringotts to make profits, its that we be fair to our patrons, or else we'll be having so much cancellations from the very beginning. No, it may not come to that. The installation of vaults are costly, and with good reasons. And be assured when I tell you, you are carrying too much than the asking price."
"That still doesn't answer my question" said Nami "What are you asking"
Suddenly the door opens and another goblin enters the office with a large bag which he drops onto the desk. The manager opens the bag and starts pouring out so much gold and silver coins.
"I had your gold and jewels appraised and as you can see, you have quite the fortune" said the manager as he starts to take a handful of coin which is like chump change in comparison. "This will pay for the installation while the rest is yours to do."
"I see" said Nami as she starting to relax while stuffing the coins back in the bag. "If that's the case, let us proceed."
Present time
Nami finally have multiple vaults available for use, four to be precise. The first vault is known as the Straw Hat Pirate Vault, there all the main wealth is stored so that when the crew have their own vaults, payment will be transferred periodically once they are open. The second vault is know as the Monkey D Vault, a family vault belonging to Luffy and his Wives, so that they can properly provide for the family.
The final 2 vaults will be for Hinagiku and Belle, as Harry has his own vaults from his birth parents, it'd be fair if the girls have their own.
With the paperwork done, Nami is now given 4 vault keys by the manager. Being money wise (not to mention stingy), she is unofficially in charge of the Straw Hat's finances, now those finances are being stored and supervised in these wizarding banks as they claim to be "Safe". "Safe" might be generously put, but it is better than nothing since the Straw Hat Pirates are unknown to this world so that helps.
Be that as it may, Nami will keep those keys in a firm grip and at her person at all times.
"And like that, our business is concluded" said the manager
"Thank you" said Nami taking the bank keys and putting them in her bag. "And you be sure to divide the rest in the vaults."
"They'll be deposited equally, ma'am" said the Manager as he jumps off his desk chair and heads for the door. "If there is anything else, don't hesitate to ask."
"I won't" said Nami
She shakes hands with the Goblin manager and gets up from he seat. Belle and Hinagiku who are sitting patiently by their mother also gets up and they all leave the office. As they exit the room, the notice that Harry, Luffy and Hagrid came back from the vaults, Belle and Hinagiku wasted no time rushing by to their father and threw themselves to him in a hug. Luffy of course return the hug he received from his daughters and smiled happily by their welcoming embrace.
"Thank Oda you're back" said Hinagiku "It was so boring waiting for you while mum was talking to that grumpy old goblin"
"Was she now? Sorry about that" said Luffy as he gives his daughters each a pat on the head. "Well, whenever we come back here, I'll make sure you come along to the vaults."
"You promise" said Belle to her father.
"Of course" said Luffy as he gave his ginger haired daughter a pat on the head. "Knowing your mother, she already set up our accounts. Plus the journey there is fun!"
"Fun?"
"That's right, we got there by riding on a magical minecart" said Harry "The tracks are wild, sharp turns, deep dives, very fast. It's like a roller-coaster back in Sabaody Archipelago...except for them pesky slavers trying to trap and sell ya."
"Aye...they never learn from the last time they encountered us" said Luffy with a dark sneer at the mention of those slavers back in the archipelago. "Especially that pompous Saint Charlos, throwing his literal weight around the place. Ooh I wish I could punch his fat face again...I never forgave him for what he did to Hatchan."
"Luffy, I hope you're not thinking about punching some pompous aristocrat in the face like you did to Saint Charlos the second time we visited the Sabaody Archipelago" said Nami in a deadly calm tone, a tone which made Luffy nervous as he knows what is hidden in that calm.
"No, of course not" said Luffy holding his hands in defence. "I know better than to cause trouble. Last time, it was different and you know better than I that he deserved it."
Nami gives Luffy a narrow leer of suspicion, causing Luffy to become more nervous.
"Disregarding your reasons, Luffy." Said Nami "It's bad enough that you punched that fat bastard in the same place, but if you every try and cause trouble here while we barely settled, I will personally put you on a vegetarian diet for 3 months."
Harry, Belle and Hinagiku suddenly flinched at this and felt a slight chill in the air when their mother said that. They know better not to deny the Pirate King of his meat, even the goblins who had to learn the hard way as they also felt a sudden chill in the air, and not even the hanging torches, candles and lanterns could grant them any warmth.
"You wouldn't" said Luffy giving his wife a deadly leer.
"I would, and I will" said Nami leering back.
As Luffy and Nami stare at each other off, Harry pulls his sisters away from their parents while they remain in their immense stare down, and immediately turns as his attention onto his sisters. He opens up his money pouch and starts rummaging through it, this got the girls' attention and they curiously approach him to see what kind of coins the bank has in store.
"Here" said Harry as he gives Hinagiku and Bell each a Gold Galleon. "So, you can do some shopping your own."
"Really, just one coin?" said Belle as she stares at the coin in her hand with disappointment. The gold is quite dazzling mind you, but it's the fact that her brother only gave her one. Just one. "Wow... how generous.
"Seriously, Harry?" exclaimed Hinagiku in anger. "You have a pouch full of coins and all you give us is one measly gold coin."
"Oh you'd be surprise how much you can get from one Galleon, girls" said Hagrid "Galleons are worth more than you can imagine."
"You should be grateful that Harry is nice to give you that coin" said Nami to her daughters. "Soon, you'll get your own coffers filled in time"
"So that's what you were doing" said Luffy, the immense sensation between him and his wife has finally ended, reverting the bank's atmosphere back to normal.
Nami nods at Luffy, "If we're going to live here, it makes sense to maintain our finance. Especially when we'll trade our treasures for wizard coins to live on."
"But not all of our treasure" said Luffy, earning a laugh from Nami.
"Of course not. Some of them goes well in our ship." Said Nami "Also, it turns out Beris have no value here so they will be excluded."
"Makes sense" said Luffy with his arms crossed while nodding. "So, are we done here?"
"Aye" said Nami giving her husband a kiss on the cheek and they start to make their way out "let's go shopping."
