Chapter 11: Test Drive
Thousand Sunny
After the incident with the Devil Fruit Drive, Harry is now dealing with the consequences. On the next day, after being dismissed from the infirmary he is called by his father and mother in the Captain's quarters so they can have a talk with him. This gave Harry a bad feeling when he was summoned and he was right, Harry was given a hell of a telling off for breaking a rule by breaking into the workshop, which is strictly restricted by anyone except for Usopp and Franky.
And because of that, he is officially grounded and under ship arrest for the remainder of the summer. To prevent him from leaving the ship, Harry is fixed a cuff around his left wrist containing traces of sea-prism stone, just enough to cut off his devil fruit powers without sapping any of his strength. Not only that, he is been given scheduled duties with the rest of the crew as part of his punishment. And believe me, doing those chores under the crews' supervision is a complete nightmare for Harry.
At the early mornings, he swabs the upper decks at the bow and stern and mow the lawn at the main deck just before breakfast. After breakfast, he'll be securing the rigging and recoat the railings with either fresh paint or lacquer. Zoro or Usopp will be the ones to supervise Harry on these morning duties, but with the Devil Fruit Drive, Zoro is mostly the one keeping an eye on Harry, making sure that he pulls his weight and never slack off.
On the afternoons, he'll be scraping off barnacles off the hull and go off to sea on the Mini Merry 2 to gather fresh fish at nearby reefs with Jimbei, but more as a precaution than supervision due to Harry's inability to swim or float on water.
Then, in between lunch time, he'll help Chopper and Kaya at the infirmary, such as cleaning and gathering medicinal herbs whenever the Sunny is moored on land.
Later, before bedtime, Harry will be washing the dishes after dinner time and is not to leave until every pot, dish and utensil is scrubbed, polished and spotless. This, comparing the early chores is the most arm-aching than scrubbing the decks as there are so many dirty dishes that piled up in the sink full of soapy water. Especially when his father is quite the glutton and that resulted in a massive pile of dishes. It took Harry hours each evening until the dishes are done and he has to go to sleep with aching muscles in his arms all night.
And this goes on every day of the week, each morning he'll groan restless as he has to wake up early in the morning to start his daily chores until night-time. Some of the crews are starting to feel sorry for Harry but know better as the boy broke a rule and has to pay the consequences, even the children are feeling sorry for him when they see him everyday working on the ship while they play and enjoy their shore leave on derelict islands to explore or play on the beach.
2 weeks later: Library
But he does have breaks, 10-20 minutes in the library with a book in his hand and a fresh cool mug of juice in the other. Reading helps him relax, especially when the books he reads are his new magic books brought in Flourish and Blotts. Well, bought is not exact with the book he is reading, Hogwarts: a history, as he nicked it discreetly while Nami was having a go at the poor shopkeeper for the prices on the other books. During that, Harry used his devil fruit powers to make the book in question disappear and get away with it as his powers are conveniently untraceable among the witch and wizards around.
And it's no surprise that he stole as he does this all the time when he's inland, he is a pirate and it'd be wrong of him not to. Nami of course found out about the stolen book just the day after their shopping trip, but didn't scold him but feel proud of him for a successful steal (considering how pricey those books are) and suggest that he'd do it again on their next shopping trip.
All is quiet in the library as it should, but he is not alone for his mother is at work at the surveyor desk, updating her world map which she's been working on for 10 years. And Robin is there also, reading as usual on the other "borrowed" books which she "saved" from the dusty bookshelves in so many noble houses, including the ones belonging to those up in Marijois. The three are enjoying this peace and quiet as it's the only thing they'll get on-board the Thousand Sunny, considering how crazy and wild the pirate crew can be.
"Do keep mind on the time, Harry," said Nami while scrawling her quill on her world map. "You are still grounded, mind you."
"I know," said Harry while reading Hogwarts: A history. "You remind me of this every day."
"Well, if you hadn't snuck in the workshop where you shouldn't, I wouldn't have to remind you," said Nami
Harry grunted by this and went back on his book, he is still sour about being punished, especially when the others are enjoying themselves, either playing on the island beaches, discreetly visiting nations, or playing on deck or with their toys. At least Harry has his books, so it's not a total loss.
"You seem to be reading that book quite often, Harry," said Robin curiously as she sees the title of the book inn his hands. "Are you excited for your first year at Hogwarts."
"I guess," said Harry while his eyes remain fixed on the book. "After learning that I am in fact a wizard, it got me curious, you know."
"I wouldn't know, I'm not a witch," said Robin
Harry couldn't help but laugh and turn to the archaeologist with an amused look.
"Oh, come on, with your clever mind and devil fruit powers, you might as well be one," said Harry. "Same for mum as she has a magic stick of her own which can conjure up storms."
Robin laughed in return while Nami blushed after overhearing what Harry said, suddenly her imagination got the best of her as she starts imagining herself in witch's robes and hat, waving her climate-tact in the air so that she can manipulate the clouds.
"Besides, Hogwarts is one of the few, out of 11 magical schools that accept "muggle-borns" and half-bloods" to attend." Said Harry
"I think I'd be too old to attend Hogwarts myself, Harry," said Robin with an amusing smile.
"I doubt that'll stop you," said Harry. "Nor are you the one to follow the rules after being on the run from the "law" for 20 years."
Robin smiles at that response and goes back to the collection of books on the shelves. Harry goes back to his own book and continues reading before his break is over.
Later
With his break over, Harry returns to do his chores. Right now, he is scraping off the barnacles and algae off the Sunny's hull while she is moored on land so Franky can give her a good careening. Out of all the chores in the past two weeks, this is the most despised of them all. Especially when everyone else is enjoying themselves.
The rest of the Straw Hats are either at the beach, bathing at the sun or playing in the cold water while the rest of the crew are further in the island, stocking up preserves and resources for the ship while the cleaning and careening is in progress. Harry looks away with a groan as he returns his attention to the crusty and slimy lower hull of the Sunny, which is not a pretty sight for the boy to see.
"uh, how long do I have to do this?" said Harry while he struggles to pry off the shelled parasites off the Sunny's Hull.
"Until the King and Queen decides that you're punished enough, meaning the rest of the summer," said Jimbei sitting by him while reading the newspaper. "Now be sure to scrape every barnacle and clean off ever trace of algae. We want the hull spotless for Franky to careen."
"Right, right!" said Harry as he struggles to pry the barnacles off the hull and throw them at the sea. This would go on for a while as the hull is a complete mess from a day's worth at sea. Not to mention the slimy green algae which is foul to touch and a nightmare to clean off completely.
Nevertheless, Harry and Jimbei cleaned up the hull for Franky so he can start careening, which is another job for Harry to do to assist the shipwright. Harry is more relieved to finish off the previous chore and would be happier to work with a hammer and nails than a knife to scrape off barnacles and algae.
Franky goes around to check the hull for any rotten boards, which is rare since the wood used for the Sunny is Adam wood, extremely durable compare to iron but wood is wood and will eventually rot and break. Luckily the shipwright has an abundance of Adam wood stored on the ship for repairs such as the careening which he and Harry are about to do. Seeing signs of rotting, Frank carefully pries off the wood so not to damage his pride and joy. Then he places a new plank and holds it in place.
"Alright kid, start hammerin'" said Franky while holding the plank.
"Right," said Harry as he puts a nail at the corner and starts hammering in the first plank to the ship
"Good, now you keep on hammerin' while I search for more areas to repair," said Franky giving Harry the thumbs up and moves on ahead.
Careening, like other chores, takes time for Harry as he has to hammer in replacements high and low on the Sunny's hull, not to mention it causes his arms to ache as he hammers in the nails on the planks, but just as dusk rolls in, he managed to finish with the last nail hammered completely.
"Alright, that will do" said Franky after a close inspection to the hull. "Go take a break, Harry. I'll finish up from here."
"Aye," Harry said in a tiring tone as he sluggishly returns the hammer to the Shipwright and heads for the gangplank hooked to the Sunny's broadside.
Week later
Harry is getting rather bored, it has been 3 weeks now since he's been grounded, doing these back breaking chores while the new generation are having fun and he isn't sure if he can cope with this any more. Right now, he is swabbing the upper decks at the stern but he is mentally drained after his 3 weeks under punishment, he groans when he mops the upper deck while the hot sun beams down on him. He looks down at the main deck to see his sisters and friends playing on the lawn and enjoying the summer sun, he then turns to see Zoro who is meant to be keeping an eye on him but is instead taking a nap under the shade of the mast.
Harry groans once again and continues on with his scheduled chore, muttering about Zoro sleeping on the job. He stops however when a wicked idea starts to form in his head, followed with a mischievous smile. After finishing off one part of the upper deck, Harry then grabs a bucket and tosses it at the other side, exactly where Zoro is napping.
As he threw the cold soapy water at the napping Swordsman, Zoro is immediately woken when the water splashes all over him, causing Harry to stifle a laugh while saying. "Oops, sorry. I didn't see you there."
Zoro only stared at Harry and growled at him, but before he could say anything, another beat him too it as they approach the upper decks.
"You had it coming for sleeping on the job, Zoro"
It is Usopp, he is about to water his Pop Green Garden so to cultivate his ammunition for his Black Kabuto. He saw Harry splash Zoro with the bucket of water and also stifled a laugh.
"Anyway, you may want to dry up unless you want everyone to know that the "World's Greatest Swordsman" died from a cold." Said Usopp crossing his arms. "I'll keep an eye on Harry for ya."
Zoro mainly grunted at the gunner and leave the upper deck so that he can dry up and get a change of clothes to replace his now soaking wet ones. Usopp gives Harry a wink before heading for the Pop Green Garden and starts watering the plants.
"How are you hanging, Harry?" said Usopp while watering his plants.
"Meh," said Harry bluntly while mopping the other side of the upper deck. "I'm holding on"
"Uh huh," said Usopp unconvincingly at Harry, as a liar he can tell if someone is telling the truth or not. And Harry is obviously lying as his body and face language is easy for the gunner to read like an open book. "Anyway, Franky and I have finally fixed the Drive."
"Did you test it?" said Harry
"Not yet," said Usopp "I just need to wait for you to finish with the upper decks."
Harry stopped and suddenly turns to the Gunner with a surprised expression on his face, and he noticed a smile on Ussop's face.
"Hold on, are you telling me that...I'll be testing it?" said Harry
"Aye, it a LOT of persuasion to get Nami's approval, believe me."
"...How much?" said Harry as he has a good idea how Usopp managed to persuade her successfully, and that is through bribery.
"Er...it's not important," said Usopp as he isn't comfortable talking about how he manages to persuade the Queen in agreeing to Harry testing the device. "But what's important is that we'll be testing out the Devil Fruit Drive. So, hurry up and finish with the chores so we can begin."
"Aye, aye" said Harry immediately as he starts to pull his weight more as he continues to mop the upper deck, Usopp couldn't help but chuckle at the motivation he gave Harry and returns to tend to his personal garden.
Later: Docking Room (Channel 7).
After finishing up on the upper deck and the main deck, Usopp brought Harry down below deck so that they can give the Devil Fruit Drive a proper test drive. After last time, Usopp and Franky gave the machine a complete overhaul to check any internal damage while reinforcing it at the same time.
However, the DFD isn't in the workshop anymore, instead Franky had to do some modifications below deck that took him weeks to do as he has to install a room for the machine to reside, not only that, he and Usopp has to feed pipe and wiring all around the ship so it would stabilize the machine as it's required according to the schematics. Fortunately the drive room doesn't take so much room as it's about the size of a closet since the DFD has been cut to size unlike it's original size. The Drive room is located in the Sunny's Soldier Dock System, right inside the newly installed Channel 7 which is positioned in between the other six channels. To access Channel 7 is through a hatch on the floor of the docking room.
After climbing down the ladders through the hatch of the main deck, Franky opens up the second hatch for Harry to enter through.
"Get in please" said Usopp to Harry as he gestures the open hatch.
Harry nods at the gunner and drops in before Franky closes it tight, the control panel then rises from the floor and appears in front of Usopp. The panel contains an array of buttons, switches, valves, gauges and a speaker with receiver for communication. Usopp pulls out the receiver from the panel and starts to speak into it.
"Harry, how are you doing, buddy?" said Usopp.
"Doing fine, Usopp" said Harry through the speaker.
"Alright, now listen very carefully so we can avoid anymore accidents," said Usopp. "You are currently in the new Channel 7, where the DFD is installed. And unlike last time, it can only be turned on by the control panel by me."
"Ok."
"Now, you should find a chair and desk inside, please sit on the chair," said Usopp.
"Got it," said Harry, he went silent for a moment before calling back to Usopp. "I'm seated, Usopp"
"Good, now on the desk is a map with several waypoints marked on it," Said Usopp. "Now for this test, I want you to take us to those waypoints. Nami up on deck will inform me if we're at those waypoints. Just relax, concentrate and do what comes naturally, ok?"
"So basically, use my Devil Fruit Powers, right?" said Harry.
"Correct, but wait for my signal," Said Usopp. "The signal I'll give you is when I turn off the lights, got it?"
"Got it," said Harry.
"Right, now for some adjustments..." said Usopp as he starts twerking on the controls in the panel while examining the gauges. Pressure levels: normal, power levels: normal...ok, get ready, Harry!"
"Ready!" said Harry.
But before he can give Harry the signal, Usopp flick on a switch which cause an alarm to klaxon all over the Sunny. He then pulls the receiver close to his mouth again and starts calling out.
"Attention: The Devil Fruit Drive is now online," Said Usopp, his voice is transmitted to the installed speakers installed in the rooms for everyone to listen. "Everyone please stay indoors while the Devil Fruit Drive is active. Repeat: please stay indoors while the Devil Fruit Drive is active."
Usopp puts down the receiver and waits for a moment for everyone to get indoors before he can give Harry the signal to use his Devil Fruit powers. After waiting 5 minutes, Usopp takes the receiver from the panel and starts speaking to Harry once more.
"Take us to the first waypoint!" said Usopp as he turns off the lights in the DFD, signalling Harry to use his Devil Fruit powers.
"Got it" said Harry inside the DFD, while he waits for the signal, he was going through the map on the desk to memorise and pinpoint the precise position he wanted to go. Once the light goes off, he close his eyes, visualise where he wanted to go and lets his power flow.
Main Deck
Hearing the warning, the crew starts to head inside, all except for Nami as she needs to see if Harry took the Sunny to the appointed waypoints, and Luffy as he doesn't want to miss this for the world. The children wanted to stay out during the DFD test, but their parents told them no and threaten them with the same punishment Harry is currently facing if they don't listen.
With everyone inside, Nami and Luffy waits for Harry to use his powers on the DFD so he can send the Sunny to the first waypoint. Anxious by this, Nami tightly gripped on the railing as she waits, Luffy notices her looking anxious he attempts to comfort her as he place his hand on her tattooed and scarred shoulder. Nami felt his hand on her and she slightly calms down and loosen her grip on the railing.
"Everything's going to be all right, Nami," said Luffy with a reassuring smile to the navigator. "Have some faith."
"I'll try" said Nami taking a deep breath to steel her nerves. Out of all the dangers she and the crew encountered, this is but another for her she has to suck up. Suddenly, the ship is starting to glow, catching Nami and Luffy's attention, this is just like last time but this time the glow isn't wild and out of control due to Harry's accident on the DFD. The glow seems controlled and flowing easily now, the pipes and wiring all over the ship helps with all of this. Nami however isn't completely reassured but gets ready regardless for Harry to use his Devil Fruit Powers on the ship.
And wait she will not have to do much longer when the ship suddenly disappears, leaving behind a large ripple on the surface as the ship's suddenly disappearance slightly disturbed the water.
Seconds later, the Thousand Sunny reappeared at a different part of the Grand Line, right at the first waypoint which is located 40 miles south off shore from a summer island. Nami held tight the railings when the Sunny dipped her bow, splashing hard onto the water before rising up until the whole bow is lifted up from the water before crashing down again in another splash. Nami exclaims as she struggles to keep her balance, fortunately Luffy held her in his arms while coiling his wrists around the railing so that he and Nami won't fall off until the Sunny stops bobbing up and down on the water.
Suddenly, Usopp's voice calls out from the speakers, saying "DFD is now offline, all crew are free to exit."
"Ugh, remind me again why I agree to this?" said Nami while remains deep in her husband's embrace.
"We need to see if the machine works so it can take us to the other world for Harry can study at Hogwarts" said Luffy
"I was being rhetorical," Nami said with an annoyed groan. "I swear to Oda, that long nosed idiot is going to be the death of me."
Luffy chuckled at Nami while ravelling his coiled arms from the railing until they're back to their original length and shape. Nami reluctantly leaves the embrace of her husband and turns toward the horizon beyond the ship's bow.
"Alright let's get this over with" said Nami as she pulls out a sea chart and a brass sextant so she can get to work.
Docking room (Channel 7)
Back at the Docking Room, Usopp turns off the DFD just after the Sunny reappeared and the glowing stops, he doesn't want Harry to trigger machine by accident. He turns to Franky and gestures him a nod to open up the hatch that they can check up on Harry below. The Gunner looks down the open hatch where Harry sits on the seat, leaning back so to get himself comfortable until he looks up at Usopp in return.
"You alright, Harry?" said Usopp
"Aye," said Harry with a outstretched thumbs up. "Are we still going on?"
"Hold on, I need to get Nami's feedback if we reached the waypoint," said Usopp as he moves back while pulling out his baby transponder snail. After turning the snail's rotary dial on the side of its shell, he calls Nami and waits for a response. Then, just as the call is made when Nami replied with a "Yeah?", Usopp immediately speaks. "Well, Nami? Are we there?"
"Just little off course, but we're here," said Nami's voice coming out from the snail's mouth while mimicking her groaning expression. "You're damn lucky it didn't blow up, Usopp!"
Usopp rub the back of his neck while pulling a sheepish expression on his face, which is seen by his transponder snail and later mimicked by Nami's snail.
"Well, Franky and I made extra precautions when we're working on the Devil Fruit Drive," said Usopp. "And I told you that everything will be alright, didn't I?"
"mmm," Nami grunted while the snail mimicked her unconvinced look. "Well, until Harry takes the Sunny to the other waypoints, THEN I'll be okay with it. Carry on."
"Aye," said Usopp before hanging up his snail and returns to the control panel. "Shut the hatch, Franky. We're doing the next waypoint."
"Got it," said Franky before he close and lock the hatch again.
Usopp pulls the receiver from the panel and starts speaking to Harry through it.
"Alright, Harry. Time to take us to the next waypoint," Said Usopp.
"Got it, just signal me when we're ready!" said Harry through the speaker.
Several tests later
Harry continues on with the testing in the Devil Fruit Drive, taking the Sunny to the positioned waypoints over and over until Harry could not do it any more due to built up fatigue and feeling exhausted. Deciding to call it a day, Usopp turns off the Devil Fruit Drive and pulls the tired boy out with the help of Franky.
As the Gunner and Shipwright pull Harry out, they notice that Harry does not have any energy left in him to even move, followed with a low rolling groan and a lopsided head resting on his own shoulder. Seeing how tired Harry looks, Usopp calls Nami about this and this is her response.
"Let him rest, testing that machine would be quite enough of a chore so he can skip the rest for today," Said Nami. "But only when he's testing the machine, he is still grounded."
"Got it, I think we'll do another test on the DFD in a few days." Said Usopp while Franky carries Harry in his cybernetic arms. "Let's get him to bed."
"Right," said Franky as he and Usopp leave the docking room so they can take Harry to the children's quarters.
As they climb up to the main deck and make their way to the children's quarters, they notice that Nami and Luffy remain by the railing, watching the now night sky until they notice the gunner and shipwright approach them. Nami saw Harry sleeping in Franky's arms, softly snoring with drool seeping out from his agape mouth. Nami smiled slightly at the boy and walk towards Usopp and Franky so that she can take Harry. As she did, she pull off Harry's glasses and hat off and kissed him by the lightning bolt scar on his forehead.
"I'll take it from here" said Nami
Usopp nods at the navigator and watches her take Harry to the children's quarters so he rest for the night. As Nami leave and Franky heading off, Usopp remains by the railing with Luffy and leans on them with an exhausted sigh. Luffy looks at his Gunner and smiles at him while patting his back.
"I gotta say, that was wild," said Luffy as he gives out a joyous laugh. "And I thought last time was crazy."
"Yeah, well, Harry may have to go on again until he gets the hang of it," Said Usopp with a slight grimace as he hated the idea of putting Harry through the tests again.
"Well...you could always ask me and Robin to test the Drive." Said Luffy, his smile still on his face but his eyes sparkle with anticipation, showing that he really wanted to try out the DFD next as if it's a ride at an amusement park.
"You know, that's not a bad idea," said Usopp massaging his neck and jaw. "We need to see what the other Paramecia types can do for the Sunny. Plus, it would give Harry time to rest up until he is able for the next test."
"Then it's settled," said Luffy giving Usopp another pat on the back and walks off. "I'll give Robin a talk first thing and either of us will do the test. Goodnight, Usopp."
"Night, Luffy" said Usopp as he stayed at the railing for a while before heading off to his own quarters.
