I hope you like. This fic came to me this morning. I'll be trying to go through the series, but adding my OC's into it too.
Oh, and Steve did not stay in the 40's.

Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers walked down the sidewalk, they had left the Smithsonian museum two hours ago. "How many times have you come here?" Bucky was asking, both his hands buried deep in his pockets. "Looking and admiring the past?"
Steve shrugs. "Only when I'm down. Shortly before SHIELD got compromised, I came here to visit the past. Where I knew my teammates trusted me to tell me about side missions."
Bucky shook his head. "That must've been when HYDRA was slowly starting to take over SHIELD." He grumped just as they started to pass an alleyway.
"Stop it you big bullies!"
The whimper of a little girl's voice had both men stop and turn, with their enhanced hearing they could hear it from all the way down the ally.
Bucky moved first, quickly followed by Steve.

A little girl winced as she tried to cover herself from being pelted by small rocks. "Stop it!" She cried as she's huddled in a corner and whimpering. A medium size rock flew towards her face, she screamed and closed her eyes tightly.
But the rock didn't hit her, and she winces when the rock hit something. Metal? She opened her eyes to see a stretched out arm protectively in front of her, the little girl's eyes traveled the arm up to find a man with brunette hair standing next to her.
"It's the Winter Solider!" One of the boys cried out.
"Scatter!" His friend cried.
Both boys turned tail and started to run, the bigger boy ran right into something hard and his friend slammed into his back, then the boys fell to the ground. The two looked up and almost peed themselves at Captain America.
"C, C, C, Captain America." The boys stuttered.
Steve started opening his mouth, but the boys scrambled back to their feet and nearly ran each other over running out of the alley.
"Brats." Bucky huffs, hearing sniffling behind him he turns to see the little girl using her right sleeve to whip her eyes.
Bucky turns to Steve, who shook his head and moved to the little girl, kneeling down in front of her.
"Hi there." Steve smiled and the little girl looked up, tears still in her eyes.
"Captain America." Her teary eyes are large. "Hi." Her eyes shift to Bucky, then back to Steve.
"You alright?" Steve asked gently. "Those boys."
"Always mean to me." The little girl pouts, looking down at the ground in front of her.
Steve turns to Bucky and motions for him to take over. Reluctantly Bucky slowly comes up and knelt down next to Steve.
"You ok doll?" Bucky asked, his Brooklyn accent slipping through. The little girl looked up at him, almost frightened.
"It's ok." Steve gently said. "He's been free for a long time now." The little girl looked back at him. "You can trust him."
The little girl nods, turning her attention back to Bucky, he was the one who stopped that rock. "Thank you."
Bucky nods, still silent then grunted when Steve elbowed him. "You're welcome." He looked back at Steve who motioned for him to continue, so Bucky turns to the little girl. "What are you doing in the alleyways? They're dangerous."
The little girl looked down again. "I got lost." She admits. "Those boys said they could help me. But they lied!"
"We can bring you home." Bucky offered, but the little girl shook her head.
"I was on a field trip." She tells. "We were at the big museum." She blinks as she turns to point at Steve. "Learning about you."
Bucky tried hard not to laugh at the look on Steve's face. "Well, we were just at the Smithsonian. We can take you back there."

"No kidding?" Sam Wilson laughed as he and Steve sat in a cafe. "The Bionic Staring Machine?"
"Bucky was good." Steve confirms with a nod. "I did have couch him a few times. But he did good."
Sam laughed, shaking his head. "He's gotta learn to talk to others other than you and me." He said just as Bucky approaches behind him.
"Steve's been easy since we've known him since childhood. You're an Avenger, one of the good guys." Bucky plops down in a chair between the two and folds his arms.
"Normally, I'd be insulted." Sam gives him a look. "But you're right."
Steve sighed as he leans backwards in his chair. "You two need to learn to communicate and actually work together." He reminds. "You can't have Captain America without The Winter Solider."
Bucky accusingly points at Sam. "He." He starts, but stops when Steve held up a hand.
"Buck, we talked about this."
"Doesn't mean I have to like it."

Once back home. Bucky walked down the hallway inside his apartment building. He paused when he saw someone leaning on his apartment door.
Bucky paused, taking in the silhouette. Very tensely he continued to his apartment door to find someone he hadn't seen in a long time.
"You're a hard man to find." The visiter turns to him. "We need to talk."
Bucky kept his hands stuffed in his pockets. "What'd you want?"
"It's best we talk inside."
