It's been over a week since Matt and I ended things. I should feel more—something. Sadness? Regret? But honestly, all I feel is… relief. I'm free now, and maybe that's what I've wanted all along. Maybe I need space to figure out who I am without him, without us. We were doomed the moment we realized long-distance wouldn't work. He'll be in Richmond by the end of next month, and I'll still be here in Mystic Falls. The thought of saying goodbye used to scare me, but now, it feels like the right thing.
Everyone else seems so sure of what they want, so certain about their lives. Caroline, with her plans, and Bonnie, figuring out her next move. And me…
The shrill ring of the school bell jolted Elena out of her thoughts. She snapped her journal shut, tucked it back into her backpack, and glanced at the clock. The end of the day had arrived faster than she realized.
With a deep breath, she hoisted her bag over her shoulder and made her way through the hallways, passing students rushing to their after-school activities. She was meeting Bonnie and Caroline in the locker room before cheerleading practice. It was the usual routine, but lately, something felt off. Not wrong, exactly, but… different. As if they were moving ahead, and she was standing still.
As Elena pushed open the door to the locker room, she spotted Bonnie and Caroline in their usual spots. Bonnie sat on a bench, carefully braiding her hair, while Caroline stood at a mirror, fussing with her lipstick.
"Elena!" Caroline greeted her with a bright smile, waving a tube of lip gloss in the air. "We've been waiting for you! You'll never guess what I've been planning for the summer."
Elena raised an eyebrow, stepping over to her locker. "Another one of your famous plans?"
"Obviously," Caroline grinned, turning around to face them both. "I'm thinking we need a trip. Something exciting, unforgettable. Somewhere warm and perfect for a little… summer romance." Her eyes twinkled mischievously as she glanced at Bonnie.
Bonnie's cheeks flushed a deep shade of pink, and she quickly busied herself with her sneakers. "Caroline…"
"No, I'm serious!" Caroline said, laughing. "You and Anthony have been dancing around each other for way too long. It's time you two take things to the next level. And what better way than on a perfect beach getaway? Just imagine—the waves, the sunset…"
"Caroline, you know it's not that simple," Bonnie muttered, still avoiding eye contact.
Elena watched the exchange, feeling a mixture of amusement and awkwardness. Caroline had always been the bold one, but there was something more intense behind her words lately, like she was trying too hard to orchestrate everyone's lives. And there was something Bonnie wasn't saying—something that hung in the air between them.
Before anyone could respond, All three of the girls' phones buzzed simultaneously. Elena pulled her phone out to see a group text from Anthony:
Meet in the courtyard. Something you need to know.
Elena shared the message with Bonnie and Caroline. "Anthony wants us to meet him outside."
"Now?" Caroline frowned. "Practice is in fifteen minutes."
"Sounds serious," Bonnie said, slipping on her jacket. "Let's see what he wants."
In the courtyard, Anthony was already waiting, pacing nervously. His hands were stuffed deep into his pockets, and his expression was tight, as if he'd been carrying a heavy burden all day.
Elena exchanged a glance with Bonnie and Caroline as they approached. "What's going on?" she asked.
Anthony hesitated, eyes flicking between them. "I overheard some of the football team talking about… Mr. Saltzman."
Caroline's face drained of color. "What about him?" Her voice was sharp, defensive.
"They said they saw you with him. Outside of school." Anthony's gaze shifted toward Caroline, clearly uncomfortable.
For a split second, Caroline stood frozen. Then, with a sigh that sounded more like defeat, she spoke quietly, "I didn't want it to come out like this, but… I've been seeing Alaric. Since homecoming."
"Elena, Bonnie, it's not what you think," she added quickly, noticing their shocked expressions. "He's not just some teacher to me. He's… different."
"Mr. Saltzman?" Bonnie echoed, her tone a mixture of disbelief and concern. "Caroline, he's our history teacher!"
Caroline nervously ran her hands through her hair. "Even through I'm a junior, legally I'm an adult... a year older than you all since I had to repeat 2nd grade".
Elena felt her mind reel. Alaric—Mr. Saltzman—had always been friendly, but this? "How long has this been going on?"
Caroline took a deep breath, her hands trembling slightly. "A few months. But we've been careful. No one's supposed to know. If this gets out…" Her voice trailed off, fear flashing in her eyes.
Anthony shook his head, clearly uneasy. "You need to be careful. People are starting to talk."
"I know," Caroline said, biting her lip. "But I can't just stop. I… I care about him."
Elena glanced at Bonnie, whose expression had softened, concern overtaking her initial shock. The tension between the four of them was palpable, and for the first time, Elena saw Caroline's confident exterior crack. There was vulnerability there, and fear, and something deeper that Elena couldn't quite put into words.
The bell rang again, signaling the start of practice.
"Let's just get through today," Elena said, her voice gentle. "We'll figure this out."
Bonnie nodded, her arm around Caroline. "We've got your back."
The girls headed off to cheerleading, but Anthony lingered, watching them go before turning on his heel and heading toward the parking lot. He'd had enough for one day.
