Chapter 3
The two racers were on the girl's bed in the dark. Only the bedroom lamp was on, illuminating a colorful candy-themed board game they were playing. Minty sat cross-legged and hunched over while the boy lay on his stomach. Silence stayed between the two until Swizzle moved his Reese's-themed piece two places.
"Ha!" he said happily out loud, pumping his fist in the air.
But Minty didn't respond. When the male racer looked at her, he saw the girl staring down at her board game piece while fiddling with it.
"Hey," he said softly becoming concerned. "You alright?"
Minty sighed "Yeah," she responded.
Swizzle knew that 'yeah' meant 'no'. The girl didn't even try to hide her frown.
He then smiled at her. "Need another dose from The Swizz's Cheer Up Service?"
Confused eyes met his. "The Swizz's...what?"
"The Swizz's Cheer Up Service!" he said proudly while reaching into the bowl and taking a small red M&M . "Available for 10 hours a week, Monday to Friday," he popped the candy in his mouth.
"Wh-"
"Except public holidays," he added. "And the game's anniversary...and any racer's anniversary," he ended with a smile.
Minty watched him for a bit. She then burst out laughing.
"See!" Swizzle said pointing to her. "Top quality service!"
His friend's laughter died down, but she was still giggling. "You're really crazy, Swizz."
"I think you mean, entertaining," the boy replied, gesturing towards himself.
Minty rolled her eyes away. "Sure," she took up a piece of the Twizzlers. However, eating it made her think for a moment. No matter how much she tried to kick the boy out of her house, he still stayed for her. If she was in his position, she would have just given up and left. But Swizzle didn't.
"I'm sorry, Swizz," she said out of the blue, catching the boy off guard.
"Sorry?" the male racer watched her weirdly. "For what?"
Minty straightened her back. "I..." she began, "I'm not a good friend...to you." Her face fell.
Swizzle raised an eyebrow and then sat up. "Well that's the biggest lie I've ever heard," he said trying to lighten up the mood. But unfortunately, that didn't help.
"Swizzle."
She said his actual name. That meant she was serious. The boy stayed quiet to allow his friend to speak.
"We've been friends since the plug-in right?" she stared down at her hands, avoiding eye contact. "I feel like...I've always treated you badly."
Swizzle became confused. "How...exactly?"
"Well..." Minty rubbed her neck. "You always ask me to hang out with you or invite me to your house. I mean, you're so nice to me. Basically, the bestest friend I could ask for. You always talk to me, make my anniversary a big deal, and even stayed tonight though I kept telling you to leave," she paused for a bit, "And all I ever did was push you away."
She didn't know what brought that up. Maybe his kindness tonight made her finally appreciate her friend more. She felt so guilty for barely ever returning the favor to him.
Hearing no response, the mint-themed racer looked up at her friend. She saw the boy with slight tears in his eyes while smiling.
"Uh...Swizz?" She got worried. "You okay?"
The boy sniffed. "I'm the bestest friend you could ever ask for?"
An intense blush immediately appeared on Minty's face. The realization hit her as she recalled what she said.
"I...uh..." she frantically looked around the dark room (though unable to see clearly). She wasn't even thinking about her words during her little speech. Being so comfortable around Swizzle made her feel like she could say anything to him.
Before she could have defended what she said, arms suddenly embraced her, nearly knocking her over.
"I knew it!" Swizzle said hugging her tightly around her neck as the side of their faces pressed together.
"Swizz!" Minty yelled trying to push him off. "I...can't...breathe!" Her friend then let her go. "Look at the mess you've made on my bed!"
The bowl had tipped over when the boy reached out to her. Sweets were now lying all around and even their game board was messed up too, with the play pieces losing their original places.
However, Swizzle chose to ignore it. "I knew deep down you loved me."
A red hue emerged on the girl's face. "What?! N-no I don't!"
"Yes, you do!" he argued back.
"No-"
"Minty," his voice was more gentle. "You were never a bad friend to me." He placed a hand on her shoulder.
"You were always there for me when I needed you. Exhibit A," he took his Reese's game piece and held it up to show her. "My kart broke down when we were going to the Roster Race. And you stayed with me to help fix it."
The memory came to mind as the girl listened to him.
"Exhibit B," he picked up her game piece, which was a candy corn. "You took care of me when I was sick."
"Because I got you sick," Minty quickly said. "I felt bad. I shouldn't have made you go out into the rain like that to get my kart jack," she pointed at herself. "See? Bad friend."
"But wasn't I the one who threw it out there?"
Minty remembered that time. Swizzle was in her garage messing around while she was fixing her kart. Whenever she asked him to hand her a tool, he kept trying to toss it in a 'cool' way. But when they reached the kart jack (which was very light being made up of thin hard candy), it slipped out of his hand in the process of throwing it. It landed far outside the garage, but it was raining at the time. So, the mint racer got angry and kept demanding him to get it. But Swizzle got completely drenched from the pouring rain after retrieving the item. Despite Minty's persistence, the boy didn't bother to dry himself off properly, which led to him falling sick. Feeling guilty for making him go in the rain in the first place, she volunteered to take care of him until he got better; even skipping out on a Roster Race during his recovery.
"Plus," the boy caught back her attention. "It was my fault anyway. Even if you didn't tell me to, I would have still gotten it back. I would have still done it. Because it was my responsibility," he puffed out his chest, placing hands on his hips.
That made the girl smile a bit.
Swizzle had the same expression. "Mints," he leaned forward a bit. "I wouldn't have been your friend if you were a 'bad friend'. Okay?"
With his words providing some comfort, she released a breath and nodded slightly. However, she noticed her friend still staring at her.
"What?" she asked.
Swizzle chuckled. "You're cute when you show your soft side." Right after that statement, he got a green round pillow smacked right to his face. The impact was so strong that he fell backward onto the bed.
"Shut up!" she told him. He knew she hated being called cute.
Swizzle got up laughing. "But it's the truth," he threw the pillow back in her face. "I'm just stating a fac- Hey!" The boy was now getting multiple hits from the girl with the pillow.
"Oh, so you want to play it that way?" he asked as he grabbed a nearby pillow and returned the favor, and a pillow fight commenced between the two.
Morning came the next day, introducing a bright blue sky inhabited by fluffy pink cotton candy clouds. The sun shined down on the island, making all the colors sparkle. Minty's house was also enhanced by the rays, with its sugar particles shimmering in the light.
The front circular door then opened. Swizzle walked out with the blue box full of his controllers. Minty followed behind staying by the door and seeing her friend off.
"Well, Mints," the boy turned to his friend. "This has been fun as usual."
Minty, leaning on the door frame, rolled her eyes.
"C'monnn," Swizzle said smiling. "You had fun."
The girl stared back at him. But she couldn't prevent the small smile from making its way onto her face.
"Yeah, I knew it," the male racer said feeling proud.
"Just go home, Swizz," Minty told him, beginning to step more inside her house. "We have to get ready for when the arcade opens."
"Alright, alright. I'm going," Swizzle said starting to walk away. "Same time tonight, okay?"
Minty stopped in her tracks. "What?!"
"Yes? Cool! See ya!" Swizzle ran off.
"Wait! No!" Minty groaned loudly. "Swizzle Malarkey!"
