As he sat at his desk, on his laptop, scrolling through the endless list of court records and investigations, he could feel a exhausted sigh traveling up his throat.
He's been at it all day, only taking a lunch break that afternoon. And now, even as the sun was setting, he was still working hard.
On the desk beside his laptop was two piles of case files: a pile of read and a pile of unread. To be frank, he had read through all of them already, now he was just double checking that both the physical and digital versions of both files were the same. Also taking notes of unresolved court cases, abnormalities, and those with it's statute of limitations running out shortly, all notes taken by hand on a notepad by the other side of the laptop. Right next to his glasses.
It was painstaking work, and normally would have been left to prosecutors under him to check their own work.
But Miles Edgeworth is nothing but meticulous. He held full responsibility as the chief prosecutor to reflect the ideals of this side of the court. He had clawed his way to get here, and it seems the system was fighting with him every step of the way. Even now, it was snarling it's jaws and pulling up it's paws to attack. In this battle he found himself trying to tame the beast which was better said than done. However, with Wright's return and him his cohorts showing their cards, things might be beginning to turn around. A drop of trust was placed back in the system and only time could tell if the public would accept this slow change.
He allowed the sigh to escape from his mouth. He wasn't too tired physically, but mentally he was strained. Even the prosecutor who was "married to his job" had times of burnout. Normally he would brew a kettle of tea and have a little tea time at a time like this to collect himself. But right now as the sun sank, leaving a trail of colors behind to flow into the office and cast a warm glow, tea felt not very appropriate. He was planning on staying late tonight, ordering take out now and finishing his work around 10:00. He didn't have to, as his work quota for today had been filled exponentially, as it was always. Maybe he was working too hard. He leaned back in his chair, glazing his tired eyes across the desk. He exhaled, and closed his eyes.
What he could use right now was a distraction.
tap tap*
His eyes blinked open.
tap tap tap*
He looked in front of him. No one was knocking at the door, no, this was more of a rhythmic tapping on an object that was less stiff than wood. He turned his head around to look at the large glass window/wall behind him.
For a moment no one was there. But then, he saw a gloved hand in the lower right corner raise up to tap the glass again. A woman's head popped in to see through the window. She made eye contact and chuckled, waving a hand to him. Edgeworth almost fell off his chair in surprise, catching himself before he did. He stood up quickly and briskly walked towards the window. "Kay?!"
He quickly realized she probably couldn't hear him through the window, but was immensely concerned nonetheless.
Kay waved to him again, this time more enthusiastically. It was clear she was hanging onto something, feet also seemingly settled in a place where she would not fall. Edgeworth spoke again, knowing full well she could not hear him clearly. "Why in the world are you outside my window?"
She pointed to the corner of the window asking to be let inside. Edgeworth groaned. "Don't you know this isn't a hatched window? Get down from there right now! You're putting yourself in serious danger!"
Kay rolled her eyes, clearly not concerned, mouthing something to him.
"You know I'm used to doing these things Edgey. I'm not gonna fall."
She pointed up, indicating that she would get to the roof. Edgeworth sighed heavily. Just how she hadn't killed herself yet was a question he always pondered. Then Kay pointed to himself, then to her, then down in a firm motion.
She wanted to come around and hang out.
He relented at her request shrugging his shoulders.
"Yes. Of course. Just be careful."
Kay put up an okay sign, and continued her climb up. As Edgeworth watched her leave, he couldn't help but smile warmly.
'What am I going to do with her?'
Even after all this time, the great thief Yatagrazu hadn't changed too much.
Indeed, Kay Faraday was still upholding her ideals of the Great Thief Yatagrazu, stealing the truth no matter how ugly. She had become an athletic ace, parkouring around late at night like nobody's business, though, only when she was on investigations.
By definition she could be considered a vigilante.
Edgeworth felt a chuckle tickle at his vocal cords.
Fortunately her appearances as the "great thief" Yatagrazu have become less and less frequent, or maybe she's gotten too sneaky. Whatever the case, it's been less like Batman and Commissioner Gordon, and more like partners in a buddy cop movie.
That thought coaxed his laughter out, and he gave a hearty chuckle.
He turned from the window, allowing himself to ponder.
Her secret occupation was still part of her life, although she had gone on to continue to seek the truth, albeit more legally, in her day to day life.
She could have followed in her father's footsteps and become a prosecutor. She could have joined the police force and train to be a detective. Hell, she could have swung the other way and become a defense attorney, no doubt attaining a position at Edgeworth Law and Co. with uncle Ray (Eddie) to train her.
But instead, she was an independent private investigator, being able to be contracted out by those who request her services. Whether that be a normal citizen, the government, the police or even in the same breath as both sides of the legal bench. She had made quite the name for herself.
Miles walked away from the window to stare at the piles of case files in front of his desk.
Her most frequent "partner in crime" was the chief prosecutor himself, being by his side as they solved many cases together and saved plenty of innocents. If there was something that Edgeworth needed to be done, but didn't trust the cards he was given, he would call in Kay, and she would be willing and rearing to get her hands dirty if she needed to. Still wasn't the best when it came to confrontation though. And that's when Miles would usually step in to finish what they started. And everytime a case became concluded, Kay would insist that she didn't need to be paid by him. "Just being by your side is payment enough for me!" She would say. However Miles always made sure the precinct paid her in full and then some.
Edgeworth thought about putting the paperwork away briefly but decided against it. Instead he gazed over to the long shelf on the left side of the room. More specifically to the "unwanted" collection of flower bouquets and the much appreciated Steel Samurai figure.
Of course, their close proximity and intimate partnership made many turn their heads and notice the pattern. But instead of twisting it into something wicked, the ending gossip would always be headlined with accusations of romance.
Edgeworth's cheeks warmed at the thought, and he bashfully looked down at himself.
Even outside of work, they were also indeed very close. Spending time together, going out to different places and events, going to fan conventions, you name it. Heck, even just stopping by his house to just hang out there. This was the closest anyone's ever been to the crimson clad prosecutor, his best friends aside. So saying that they were just work colleagues was a huge lie, and an obvious one at that. He kept on asserting that she and him were just friends. Which they were, but he had a secret.
Sometimes he wished it was more.
Miles shook his head in disapproval at his feelings.
Love was something Edgeworth was not experienced with, at least not romantic love. It scared him, especially this feeling he held towards Kay. It used to fill him with such shame, he even denied himself the truth. But with the growing years he grew out of that denial, accepting his feelings and how he couldn't change that. On the other hand, acting on them? That was a whole other story. As he was so emotionally conscious, his anxieties ran high and the fear of rejection kept him at arms length from screaming out the truth. He wanted to tell the truth. It was in his nature to find out the truth and put it to light. He had found out the truth about himself. But he couldn't act.. not with his heart once again on the line. He's had his heart shattered too many times.. and even if there was only a sliver of doubt, it overshadowed the sunlight. The brightness to combat his dark and dreary world was awaiting on the other side..
He could hear footsteps approaching the office and at this time he knew there was only one person who it could be.
Edgeworth felt like he could never reach out his hand to join the happiness he wanted. The happiness he was so scared of..
Miles composed himself, gazing over to the door and taking a few steps forward. As one of the doors opened, his lips curled upwards in a soft, relieved expression.
Though that didn't stop him from feeling happy. These happy moments he had with her satisfied him enough.
Kay Faraday came into the office with a bright smile, excited to see him as she always was. The dim lighting of the office light above made her positivity glow even brighter.
Her sense of fashion (and her outfit for that matter) hadn't changed much since they re-met at the Watergate amusement park years ago.
When doing her day job, she usually wore a long sleeve magenta shirt with a white flannel jacket, and dark blue denim pants with long black boots.
The rest of the time though she wore her Yatagrazu outfit. A vibrant baby pink with a maraschino cherry red sleeved shirt, snow white cuffs on the end. A long charcoal black skirt and sleek snugly fit flexible boots. Her dark blue scarf now wrapped just once around her neck, one side falling to her back and the short side settling to her front, pointing one way. Her hair always up in a tight braid, though always ending up as a long, flowing, messy ponytail just like her late teens.
Kay greeted Edgeworth happily, closing the door behind her and almost skipping up to him enthusiastically. "Hi Miles!"
Edgeworth greeted her with a nod. "Hello Kay."
She hugged him happily, although it took him a delayed moment before reluctantly hugging her back with an arm. He expected her hugs by now, but wasn't quite used to reciprocating. "How's your day been?" Kay asked, breaking the hug and taking a step back.
Edgeworth answered typically. "Busy. As normal. Though a bit strenuous."
Kay smirked, pointing to his laptop in a playful manner. "Well it's a good thing I came around now. It looked like you were typing away to your grave!"
Edgeworth came over to his desk, beginning to straighten the two piles of folders. "It's important work Kay, you know that." He picked up the files, shuffling across the room to the bookshelf.
Kay plopped down on the couch right of the coffee table, laying her head on the far armrest to look at Miles, taking her phone out of her small brown satchel. "Yeah it's important, but you often forget that even chief prosecutors need to know when to stop once in a while."
As Edgeworth put the folders away he smirked at Kay's remark. "It's a good thing I have you then Kay."
Kay smiled with appreciation back, looking over the couch to the back turned Edgeworth. He stretched out an arm up, putting away a retired file binder. She stared absentmindedly at his figure, marveling at his physique. He'd retained his body shape even through his middle age, plenty of exercise and proper dieting. Though how fit he was was often left up to interpretation. One of the perks of knowing the chief prosecutor so closely was that he was Fit with a capital F. He did indeed have a home gym, and frequented it once a day. (Sometimes Kay would swing by his house just to use his gym equipment.) How he found the time Kay still doesn't know.
Quickly she pulled up her phone, pointing the camera at Miles. As she did, Edgeworth turned around to see her pointing her phone at him, Kay taking a picture without hesitation. They both paused, a quick silence permitting.
Miles spoke with a blank face. "Why are you taking a picture of me Kay?"
Kay blinked, before smiling daintily. "..New wallpaper?.."
For a minute Edgeworth considered shrugging her off and going about his business. But that caught smile from Kay teased him to play along. Normally he isn't one to. However..
He smirked again. "Heh. Well that picture certainly won't do would it?"
Kay's face lit up with excitement. "I know just the pose. Could you put one hand on the bookshelf behind you, above your head. But keep your head and body towards me."
Edgeworth did as he was told, and took note of her specific pose she asked for. Kay hummed for a minute before adding, "Oh, and put your other hand on your hip."
He complied as Kay nodded. "Perfect!" For a minute she fiddled with the camera settings, eventually coming to why she was dissatisfied with the camera options. She sighed with a grin. "Uh, Would it kill ya to smile for me Miles?"
He muffled a chuckle lodged in his throat, a playfully teasing grin inexcusably making it's way onto his features. "Just knowing you has probably taken a few years off my life span already."
Kay felt her heart flutter at the sight, eyes slightly widening. There was no excuse to not see his upturned lips as a subtle flirtation. Just the thought had flushed her with that ever so familiar feeling, her cheeks turning the slightest shade of red. But she did not let silence steal her breath, as she giggled with a suppressed giddiness, taking the perfect picture of him at his most defensive openness.
"Thanks Edgeworth." She lowered her phone to look at the picture as Edgeworth walked over to his desk to sit down and browse on his laptop. She giggled again, eyeing Miles from the corner of her eyes. "See? You do know how to be fun."
Miles settled in his chair, closing all the tabs on the laptop except for two. Edgeworth hid himself behind the laptop screen, now fully aware of his actions. It caused him slight embarrassment. ""Fun" isn't really my forté. However, I would be lying if I said it wasn't necessary every so often."
This was not the first time the two had subconsciously flirted with each other, nor was it the first time they were aware of their actions. And now that he was thinking it over, he silently berated himself for playing along.
Although if it were to happen again, nothing would actually change. As it normally was for them.
He took his phone out of his pocket, and clicked a few things. Seconds later, music started playing in the office, the tunes coming from a speaker set he had near his steel Samurai figure. Kay sighed contently, sinking onto the couch, phone still in her face. "Ah now that's more like it. Say, did you order take out?"
Edgeworth nodded simply, going back to the laptop. "Yes."
"Even some for me?.." Kay tilted her phone slightly, peeking at Edgeworth with a playful manner.
"I could've guessed you'd ask. Which is why I did." He replied, not looking to her.
"You know me so well Mr. Edgeworth." Kay said, slowly losing interest in what she was doing on her phone. She stared over at Edgeworth, whom was watching the laptop screen with half concentration. She groaned heavily, putting her phone on her chest. "Don't tell me you're still working?"
Edgeworth suddenly blinked, looking up to her with a swiftness that implied the impression he had been caught. "...No."
Kay immediately picked up on that, recognizing the quick flush as it attained to a certain activity they would share. She sat up, waving him over to her side. "Well get over here! It was your idea to binge the Steel Samurai together. You haven't given up on trying to convince me it's better than the Jammin' Ninja have you?"
Edgeworth chuckled lightly, standing up and walking over to her with the laptop in hand. "Not on your life."
This was one of their many bonding activities, one they've shared outside of work. Edgeworth was nothing but determined to convince Kay that his favorite show was so much better than hers.
Kay spoke again as Miles sat next to her on the couch. "Alright. but remember, tomorrow's my turn to make you watch the Jammin' Ninja."
Miles almost scoffed at her, setting the laptop down on the coffee table in front of them. "I still believe that Steel Samurai is superior. JN is painfully unfunny and lacks tact."
Kay pretended to be offended. "Hey, It's only the first season, the second season is even better. I can promise you that."
Edgeworth held back the urge to roll his eyes as he clicked play on the laptop. "And I can promise you that you'll like this episode."
What followed was a comfortable silence between the two, simply just watching the show. Keeping some distance away from each other, aware of their close proximity. The sunset in the background starting to fade and gave way to the hours of twilight. Eventually though Miles had to get up to take a brief leave, as their takeout had arrived at the receptionist's desk.
It was quiet in the offices now. Surely they weren't the only ones in the building, but it did seem that way.
As Kay was left alone in the office she let out a happy sigh. Nothing filled her with more joy than hanging out with her favorite lawyer.
The show was close to ending now and Kay took this time to stretch herself out, letting out a yawn of not so much tiredness but more so of relaxation.
She had to admit, the fight scenes in the Steel Samurai were intense and exciting to watch, but she felt the monologuing between the heroes and villains during so went on too long, bloating up the runtime.
'Heh, out of anyone in the world who would love a great dialogue it's definitely Edgeworth.'
She prided herself with being the chief prosecutor's choice for an investigator, and did everything she could to drag the truth out into the light. She took the Yatagrazu code to heart even after she had slowed down from vigilante work. Often she wondered why Edgeworth hadn't decided to get her arrested yet. He knew everything about her ins and outs, enough evidence in petty "crimes" to get her community service for at least 2 years. But, he trusted her. He trusted her thoroughly and without conviction. And really, what more could she ask for as his friend?
Kay often found the rumors about them quite amusing for many different reasons. First and foremost, they were always coming from the side of the prosecutor, as if he was the only important character in this dialogue, like she was just an afterthought tacked onto the conspiracy. The amount of dirt people wanted to dig up against him was high, compared to what little dirt he had already aired out and explained so long ago. He didn't have much to hide, at least in the public view.
Whenever she was asked about them, Kay would speak of Miles warmly, about how much she admired him and respected all the work he had done for the law in the past years. She toted that they were the best of buddies, certainly not making the rumors any easier on Miles' part. But why would she lie about their relationship? She didn't see a need to.
As Kay walked around his office, she absentmindedly scanned the shelf of flowers and steel samurai paraphernalia.
Truthfully, she wasn't lying. However, she did keep secrets about them.
She kept the fact of how close they were in his personal life close to her chest, knowing the suspicions it could add to his image. In her years as the Yatagrazu, she had Edgeworth help her with breaking information into the public view, leaving no trace and with full anonymity. As her father before her, the yatagrazu was a team effort, and even though Edgeworth was highly against doing anything "illegal" the info Kay sought was more than enough justification sometimes.
She admired Miles for that. For his pursuit of the truth, to come out of a case or trial with complete clarity and honesty. His passion, his drive, was something to behold. He stayed unwavered in this nobility. And Kay had to admit to herself, that yes, he was indeed quite handsome while doing so.
Immediately she blushed at herself, grinning bashfully and looking to the floor briefly.
She did indeed have a crush on the chief prosecutor. It had been there since they were reintroduced to each other at the Watergate amusement park. Seeing this smartly dressed man tied up to a pole in a storage room was highly amusing at first, but the more they interacted that day the more Kay liked him. At the time it seemed like he was not interested in her, more so annoyed and tolerant. But at the end of it all, he had indeed formed a bond with her. One that was hard to shake. Kay was doubtful he felt the same as her, but still couldn't help but be optimistic.
She made her way back to the couch, once again pulling out her phone as she plopped down to sit.
Though, that fear of rejection also ran through her as well. She didn't want to break this bond she had with him. She didn't want to tarnish a beautiful friendship with the dashes of romantic confession. Not unless she was sure in Edgeworth's feelings. Not helping was the fact that he was so hard to read, even if she knew all his ins and outs at this point. Miles was very careful about his approach to such intimate feelings, a shield steadfast in front of his heart.
She stared at his contact on her phone, labeled "Edgey plushie boi"
Kay sighed. Mulling over this topic again made her feel mixed up inside. However, she just let a smile rest on her features. One day, she thought, one day she would disclose these feelings to him. One day she would find out what he truly felt about her. And on that day, she would be certain.
She heard the door open and turned her head to it. Edgeworth was back, holding a white plastic bag in his off hand. She gave a welcoming smile to him, and in turn, Miles smiled small at her.
For now, she was investigating. And that was okay. Even if the waiting brought on immense heartache sometimes.
The flirtatious dialogue they sometimes shared was more than enough for her anyways.
As Edgeworth cued up another episode of the Steel Samurai and the duo began to eat their takeout, a somewhat comfy but tense atmosphere was filling the room.
Unanswered and unknown questions were plaguing both their minds today, which felt unusual. Why, of all days, would their feelings be jabbing at their sides now? It wasn't like today was special. They did this activity often. Was it because they were staying late in the office?
Yeah, normally Kay would take him out of work, they would arrive at miles' house and share some take out while watching whoever's show was scheduled that day.
Somehow, this normal occurrence happening in the chief's office felt more.. vulnerable.
Kay and Miles were still sitting side by side, watching the laptop with a lopsided interest. Edgeworth had taken off his overcoat a while ago, laying it over the top of the couch. The show was a distraction really, anything to get Edgeworth's mind away from...
Kay coyly glanced down at his hand beside himself, cautious that he wasn't paying attention to her actions. She inhaled silently, slowly inching her hand closer to his.
Suddenly Edgeworth felt a hand slide on top of his. He blinked, feeling himself sit up straighter. His head snapped over to look at Kay.
Her eyes were glued to the screen, watching the tichular Steel Samurai face off with some goons. Though it was apparent that a sprinkle of mischief sparkled in her eyes.
His expression settled into a line, eyebrows flattening straight. He was sure this action was intentional. He glanced down to their hands. She seemed content with her hand resting atop his. He glanced behind himself, thinking. He gulped.
He turned his head back forward, stealing glances at their hands as he slowly turned his hand palm side up.
Now Kay was surprised as she felt a tender grasp on her hand, giving her palm a gentle squeeze. She held a gasp back in her throat, and turned her neck to see.
Miles had his head turned away from her, anxious in his demeanor but trying not to make this feel like a big deal. She caught a bit of red dusting his cheek.
Kay's face warmed and her eyes grew big, if only by a few centimeters. She jerked her head away, beginning to blush, a shy yet giddy grin growing. Edgeworth on the other hand, held an expression of uncertainty as he was turned from her, resisting the urge to hold his arm. That was one of his tale tale signs of vulnerability, and he was not about to let his anxieties get the best of him.
Still, when he felt Kay give a gentle squeeze back, his heart skipped. Almost losing his breath he faked a soft cough. It's okay.
'This is fine.'
He took a silently prolonged inhale and exhale, finally relaxing his grip, allowing the two to simply hold hands.
Simply? No, there was so much more in this to be shared just through a little gesture.
Kay pinned this to her mental notes. Another point in the "he loves me" category? Perhaps.
They watched the rest of the episode like this, becoming comfortable with letting their hands be held without anxious nerves. Miles lowered his shield, just a little bit, to feel the warmth of happiness.
When the credits rolled, it signaled the end of this exchange. Slipping his hand out of the hold, Edgeworth stood up from the couch to close his laptop. Kay felt a little sad that the moment had ended, raising said hand up to stare at it.
'We were holding hands...'
A jumbled ball of thoughts rolled by for her, desperately holding back her giggle. She looked up at Edgeworth, about to tease him.
Instead she found him scrolling through his phone absentmindedly. Intrigued, she tilted her head slightly. "Soooo, what do you want to do now?" Kay asked, lowering her hand.
A second or two after the question was asked, music began playing around the office. Kay got excited, recognizing the song. "Oh, I love this song!"
(Now playing "Easier To Love You" by Porter Robinson)
Edgeworth set his phone down on the table. "I assumed you did. Fortunately I am also quite fond of this artist as well."
He turned back to Kay, walking up to where she sat. He held out a hand for her. "You have learned how to dance, have you not?"
Kay chuckled, taking his hand, standing up. "No thanks to you."
Edgeworth guided her to the open space behind the left couch, free hand going to wrap around her torso. "Oh please, I had to teach you for a week the proper step pattern." Kay put her free hand on his shoulder.
She giggled, remembering the conversation. At first Edgeworth outright denounced her request to teach her, but with enough prodding, (and the promise of some limited addition Steel Samurai/Pink Princess collaboration merch) he reluctantly agreed, noting that if she was to ever attend a formal outing, she would need to know how to properly ballroom dance.
The two became silent, sashaying around the room at a slow pace, simply enjoying the music, and their company.
By the fourth song, Kay had her head resting on his shoulder, an arm around his back, content. Miles found himself singing softly along to the lyrics, unknowingly holding her closer to himself.
(Now playing "Sway" by Blue October)
This was heaven. Edgeworth was sure of it. A little bubble in time and space where his soul could be soothed, where he could rest his shield. He felt Kay sigh against him, quietly joining in on the second verses chorus.
She's had dreams like this before. And they almost always ended the same way. Maybe.. maybe she had gathered enough evidence. Maybe he did harbor feelings... To read someone like an open book was not Kay's forté, but she was slowly becoming certain of the chief prosecutor.
Miles let himself smile, getting lulled in by the magic in the air. Perhaps that was just the music doing its job. He tilted his head down, whispering the verse into her ear.
"Come on, dance with me..."
She practically melted into his embrace right then and there, her other hand that had previously been holding his letting go and slipping behind his back to his neck. In turn his now free hand slinking around to her waist.
dance with me..
She whispered it back, pulling her chin to his shoulder, her head fitting perfectly in the nape of his neck.
His breath was against her ear once again.
Pretty thing, just dance with me...
She smiled softly, a warm modest blush painted across her cheeks. They were sinking into one another, Kay hearing Miles' steady heartbeat and velvety voice, syncing up with her own.
These are ours
As the song played, there was a floating feeling. A feeling of safety. Kay had made up her mind. She was certain. As it drew to a close, their dancing slowed, little by little, until the song ended. They stopped. For a moment neither of them moved.
She pulled her head back, to look into his eyes. His face held a seemingly neutral expression but the sparkle in his grey irises gave him away. Kay blinked once, feeling an invisible force pulling her closer. Miles was not fully aware of himself, as his head dipped down a tad, slowly coming closer. Kay came up to meet him, eyelids falling. Their lips met and everything left unsaid was suddenly spilled out. A taste of heaven...
It was only for a second however, as Edgeworth immediately regained control of his consciousness and pulled away from the kiss, snapping open his eyes.
Kay's eyes fluttered open, as surprised as him at their unexpected intimacy. Fear started settling in Miles' stomach. His eyes widened, and he hastily removed himself from Kay, taking an unbalanced step back but still keeping on his feet. Kay's eyes widened too, and suddenly her oh-so-steadfast certainty was called into question by his physical response. Edgeworth's face was burning red.
Silence.
Kay was too shocked to say anything.
Regret was filling his eyes. Kay held her breath. Edgeworth dropped his head down, hand going to hold his arm, fully ashamed. "I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have done that. It was immature of me. I've disregarded your feelings and let my impulses get in the way." This was not how he wanted it to happen.
Unfortunately Kay mistook his embarrassment and shame as rejection.
Kay's eyes started to water. She felt dejected. What she didn't want to be true... it seemed that it was indeed reality. She took a sharp breath, refusing to cry. Then she looked down, sighing sadly, knowing it would have happened this way anyways. She turned away from him, crossing her arms and gazing down to the floor. The unshed tears were stinging her eyes. She ruined it. Their bond, their friendship.
Kay closed her eyes and whispered, the sadness scratching at her voice. "I'm sorry too... I should've known you didn't feel the same."
Miles' eyes widened. As she started walking away, Edgeworth bolted forward towards her. "K-Kay, w-wait!" He grabbed her wrist with haste, causing Kay to spin around to face him, seemingly frazzled.
Edgeworth froze, numerous emotions clashing against each other. Fear, hope, anxiety, shock, and a strange euphoric revelation. He noticed the tears in Kay's eyes, suddenly becoming concerned for her.
"Kay?..."
She tried to turn her head away from him, but a gentle hand on the side of her chin guided her gaze back to him. He looked a bit more tapered off in emotion, choosing to remain as calm as he could. He spoke with nothing but curiosity. "What do you mean by that?.." If he was going to be certain in where his train of thought was headed, he needed definitive proof.
Miles let his left hand fall back to his side as Kay sighed sadly. It looked like she had to face rejection head on. 'No use in hiding it anymore I guess..'
She glanced down briefly, speaking truthfully. "Edgeworth.. we've worked together for over 8 years.. and throughout those years it's no secret that we've gotten very close. You.. are one of my best friends. But... I couldn't help it.. ever since I met you at the Watergate park..I.. fell pretty hard for you. Those feelings have only intensified the longer we stuck together. I only realized it after I recovered from my amnesia stint way back."
His grip on her wrist loosened, and Miles was once again left speechless. "You.. you have feelings for me?"
She nodded silently, glancing at him. "Yes. But it's apparent to me now that you don't feel the same." Kay looked back down. She didn't dare look back up. It hurt too much to.
Suddenly she felt strong arms wrap around her, pulling her to his chest.
"I apologize for not acknowledging your feelings sooner."
Edgeworth's face flushed with a light dusting of pink. "I.. myself am not very good at this type of thing."
Kay looked up to him, perplexed. Her doubts were put on pause as she yearned to learn more about this most unusual show of affection from the prosecutor. "Edgeworth?.."
Miles talked nervously, while at the same time trying to reassure her. He carefully pulled away slightly to face her, but not out of the embrace. "Why do you think I go along with your playful banter? Why I respond the way I do to you? To no one else?" He gulped his anxiousness down. "Please don't take what I said as rejection. It's not like that at all." If Kay was going to be truthful with her emotions, he decided he was going to be as well.
Why did it feel like he was going to faint? His face was becoming more and more red, his blush blooming vibrantly. His arms around her shaking slightly. Kay noticed. "Listen- I.. I.."
'Why the hell is this so hard?' He shook his head and took a deep breath, locking eyes with hers. His shield slipped away. He spoke with certainty. "I feel the same way about you. Th-that is to say that I-"
"You love me?" Kay interrupted him, eyes shining. She couldn't believe her ears. Edgeworth nodded, exhaling with relief. He was thankful she spelled it out first.
He let his hands slide down her arms, going to hold her hands. He stared down at her, honesty overwhelming him. "Yes, Kay. I love you. I was just too scared to tell you. Scared that you would reject me. Scared that you didn't love me. Scared that.. you could ever love me."
Kay squeezed his hands, giving a shaky smile, remaining tears streaking down her face. "I was scared too Miles. Of ruining our friendship. I know how hard it is for you. To let people in. And I thought, that you'd never see me as more. I was afraid that confessing to you would tarnish our bond."
Edgeworth made his stance quite steadfast, standing straight, smiling, almost smirking. He squeezed her hands back. "Well, I'm not afraid to say it anymore. Not after you've finally confirmed my feelings as sound and well founded today. I'm in love with you, Kay Faraday."
Kay felt her eyes water again, this time with happy intent. She quickly wrapped her arms around his neck warmly, hands resting on his upper back, burying her face into his cravat. "I love you too Miles. I'm so relieved."
Miles reciprocated her embrace, arms going around her waist torso. Comfortable silence fell upon the two. After a moment, Miles pulled back to see her face. Her cheeks were stained with tears, however she was grinning this time.
"Now," he lifted his left hand up to her cheek, brushing the remaining tears away with his thumb. "You have nothing to cry about, yes?"
Kay chuckled softly, humming an "hm-nm", becoming bashful herself.
For a moment she leaned into his hand, gazing to him with loving eyes. Miles grinned gently back. Suddenly the two blushed, slightly flustered and embarrassed about their prolonged "staring contest." His hand fell to her shoulder.
Kay broke the silence with her signature beam. "Can we continue dancing?"
Miles nodded. "Of course. But first-"
He moved themselves away from the door and back into the middle of the room, seemingly becoming bashful once more. "Um, can I, try that again? Admittedly I wasn't exactly prepared."
Kay blinked for a moment, before giggling at him. Her hands smoothed from his neck to his cravat, gently grasping at it. "Always so modest are you? Well, I exactly wasn't prepared either. So yeah, let's try this again, shall we?"
They both moved their faces nearer, this time with full intent, and the two's lips met in a sweet and tender kiss. This time it felt right. Kay let out a breath she didn't even know she was holding, and her hands glided back past his neck, arms curling around his neck. Both of Edgeworth's arms moved to cradle her waist, pulling her ever closer. Kiss after kiss, only ever needing a second to breathe between them.
Now this, this was a pure taste of heaven. He could taste the sweet sugar of her lips and wondered why he had taken so long to kiss her. She could taste a hint of dark chocolate, although she briefly pondered why, as he had not eaten any chocolate recently. Those thoughts however were quickly pushed to the side as the kiss deepened and she felt herself pressed up against the prosecutor. Immediately her mouth opened slightly, and Miles reciprocated the open mouthed kiss. Kay hummed softly, and Miles let out a content groan. Indeed, strawberries and cream mixed perfectly with chocolate and cherries, not wanting to leave any taste of it unexplored.
The couple were kissing passionately like this for a couple of minutes, bliss blinding them to the outside world. Fortunately, they really were alone in the prosecutor's building as nightfall had fully taken affect.
Eventually their mouths departed, quiet little breaths being taken as loving eyes met euphoric ones. The breathing fell silent, and Kay and Miles simply smiled at each other.
And yes, they did indeed decide to dance for a few more songs. Kay melting in his embrace and Edgeworth making sure she stayed upright.
After another round of slow dancing came and went, Kay was feeling heavy. Miles noticed as Kay yawned a smidge, her grip on him becoming stronger. He chuckled. "Alright, I think that's enough dancing for tonight."
He guided her to the couches in the middle of the room, deciding to lay her down on the left couch. "You need some rest after all."
As he settled her on the cushions, pulling away from her, one of Kay's hands shot out to grab his hand. Edgeworth looked to Kay. She had her eyes open, green irises shining in the moonlight. "Please. Don't leave. Stay with me? At least this once?"
Edgeworth chuckled. "Okay."
This also wasn't the first time Kay had crashed at Edgeworth's office during the night. Some days he would give her permission to do so, other days he would come into the office to find a sound asleep Kay on the couches. Sometimes he would personally drive her to her apartment, or, in some rare cases, to his house and she would pass out on his home couch.
Edgeworth sauntered across to his desk, going behind it and searching for something in particular.
Shortly he pulled out a blanket, and came back over to Kay. "You're lucky I keep blankets in here for when you go out on your late night thievery."
He handed Kay the blanket, and Kay took it, suddenly a tad reluctant. She had a sudden thought. She looked to him with pleading eyes. "Can you.. lay with me?"
Miles blushed lightly at her request. "Uh- I-"
Immediately Kay backpedaled, sighing, glancing down to the floor. "It's alright. You don't have to if you don't want to."
For a moment Miles was silent, contemplating the thought. He turned around halfway. "... I'll lay with you. If that's what you wish.."
Kay blinked, pleasantly surprised, but greatful nonetheless. Miles fully turned away, first grabbing his phone to turn off the music. He set it back on the coffee table, screen face down. Briefly he went over to the other couch and unbuttoned his black vest, letting out a routine sigh. Kay watched nervously, heartbeat quickening at all the fictional scenarios running through her head. 'Calm down Kay.. he isn't like that..'
He draped his fancy vest on top of his velvet coat, which was draped over the top of the couch, and turned back to face her. Kay could not take her eyes off him.
Miles raised a brow, crossing his arms. "What? Why are you staring at me?"
Kay's face became shaded with red, hiding her face slightly with the blanket. "S-sorry. You're a very handsome man Edgeworth."
Miles' cheeks warmed a little, not expecting such a forward compliment at this time. He quickly regained composure however, a small upturn on his lips. "O-oh. Thank you."
He slipped out of his shoes as he came back to the couch Kay was laying on. As he did Kay sat up, leaving plenty of room for Miles to sit next to her. She noticed that he had taken off his shoes and did the same as Edgeworth sat next to her. Through this short moment Edgeworth was thinking of something to say, and when he finally landed on it, he laid a hand on her thigh. Kay gazed to him. He smiled genuinely.
"And you, are a very beautiful woman, Kay."
Kay grinned, allowing her brushed red blush to color her cheeks. She could've swooned at his words. Miles took her in his arms and the two laid down, soon finding a comfortable position. She was laying near the edges of the cushion, being held tightly by the chief prosecutor, his arms wrapped around her upper body. Kay giggled a little. "You're not going to let me fall off the couch are you?"
Edgeworth smirked. "Hm. Perhaps. Maybe it would teach you a lesson."
"Miles!"
He let out a soft chuckle, pulling her even closer. "Then again, you'll be much safer next to me dear."
Kay turned herself to face him, with a equally snarky smirk. She pressed a finger to his nose as she called him one of his many nicknames the press had given him. "If you say so, "demon prosecutor.""
He refrained from a chuckle this time, and started leaning in for a kiss to which Kay happily met. Simple, sweet, and graceful. She yawned again as they departed, resting her head on his upper chest. She could hear and feel his heartbeat steadily thumping.
"Night."
Edgeworth rested his head on top of hers. "I'll see you in the morning Kay. I'll be right here when you wake up." He felt Kay become limp as she went off to dream. Miles eyelids fell, and sleep was finally able to claim him. After a long strenuous battle, he would have a peaceful slumber. Being able to be fully vulnerable without fear.
The press would have certainly gotten more than they had bargained for if they had known right then and there. But it did come as a surprise when the chief prosecutor himself with the well known Yatagrazu came out to make it official to the public.
The truth was revealed, and the two couldn't be more relived with this distraction of a evening.
