Woah! This chapter sure came out fast considering how little time I have to write currently!
I guess it was a mix of me being really inspired while writing it and the fact that Sonic X Shadow generations just released on my country!
I hope you're all ready for some feelsy stuff in this one!
Chapter 4: Reflections!
Well, this was quite the awkward situation.
Sonic looks at Amy and Julius with narrowed eyes, interrupting their kiss. "Well, I didn't expect this. I came here running when I heard all the explosions, but... What are you doing with this random guy, Amy?"
Amy looks at Sonic with wide eyes. "Sonic...?"
Julius's ears perk up at the mention of the hero's name. "Wait... Did you just say Sonic? As in, the hedgehog who constantly foils Robotnik's schemes?"
Sonic nods softly, still squinting his eyes at Julius and Amy in a less than pleased way. "Sure am. Who are YOU, pal? What are you doing with Amy? Let go of her or I'll have to get serious."
Amy's expression turns into a mix of anger, frustration and a bit of sadness. "His name is Julius, Sonic. He's a good guy and we were busy."
Sonic crosses his arms, not trusting the Indigo hedgehog. "Not buying it yet. He could work for Eggman for all I know. Plus, that name sounds like something Eggman would come up with to mess with my head. Get away from him, Amy."
Amy frowns, clinging tighter to Julius. "I don't want to get away from him."
Sonic frowns as well. "Amy..."
Amy's frown turns into a small glare. "What if I don't want to leave him? What are ya gonna do, hm?"
Sonic grunts quietly. "Amy, this isn't the time for jokes. Let go of him NOW."
Amy opens her mouth to reply, but Julius pokes her shoulder to get her attention. His expression remains neutral, though there's a slight flicker of understanding in his eyes as he looks at Amy. "I'll leave you two to talk. It's clear you've got some things to work out."
Julius starts to walk away, but as he does, he glances back at Amy, his voice a bit softer. "Don't worry, Amy. I'll come back for you."
Amy gives a small nod, her eyes lingering on Julius for a moment before she turns back to Sonic, mirroring his less than pleased expression since her first kiss with someone very meaningful to her had been interrupted by HIM of all people.
Sonic keeps crossing his arms. "So... care to explain yourself?"
Amy raises an eyebrow. "Excuse me?"
Sonic's expression remains the same. "You heard me."
Amy crosses her arms, mirroring Sonic's mannerisms. "I don't have to explain anything."
Sonic shakes his head, letting a small, frustrated smile form on his lips for a moment. "Heh, still not very funny, Ames. Come on, just explain yourself."
Amy starts to lose her patience. "What do I have to explain, huh? I haven't done anything wrong."
Sonic's expression turns serious. "Amy, come on. This really isn't funny."
Amy's expression turns more bitter. "Good, because it isn't supposed to be."
Sonic sighs. "So, is this what we're doing now? Playing hard to get?"
Amy shrugs. "Dunno, you tell me. It's what you're best at. It's the main reason I decided to come here."
Sonic's eyes widen slightly. He had a feeling Amy had decided to come here partially because of their last desastrous attempt at a date, but he didn't think it had been the MAIN reason. "So... I'M the reason you decided to come here?"
Amy nods. "Yup. I needed a break from... all of this. From you."
Sonic feels slightly offended. "You could have at least told me you were going away, you know."
Amy huffs. "Why? I didn't want to see YOU for a while."
Sonic's voice rises, his frustration evident. "Amy, you've been gone for a week, and you didn't think to tell me? You just… left! I had no idea where you were, and when I find you, you're getting awfully cozy with some... stranger? What was I supposed to think?"
Amy starts to lose her composure. Her voice is sharp, her eyes flashing with anger for a moment. "What were you supposed to think, Sonic?! You never think about me until I'm not around! When I'm right there in front of you, it's like I don't even exist! You only noticed I was gone because you don't have anyone to chase you around right now!"
Sonic gets defensive, stepping closer to her. "That's not true, Amy! You know I care about you! I've always cared about you, but I... I've got responsibilities. You know that! There's always some crisis, always something to stop: Eggman, the deadly six, Metal-"
Amy interrupts Sonic, her voice rising. "Don't you DARE give me that, Sonic! You always have an excuse! Every single time I asked you for a little of your time, just a date, just to talk, you always found a way to dodge it. It wasn't the emergencies stopping you, it was you choosing to run away! You never even tried to meet me halfway!"
Sonic's jaw tightens, his frustration growing. He gestures animatedly with his hands as he responds. "Is THAT what this is about? I wasn't running away! I just… I don't know, Amy! I'm not like you; I'm not ready for all of that! You're always talking about the future, about us, and I don't even know what I'm doing tomorrow! You think it's that easy for me?"
Amy's voice starts to crack as she steps closer to him. "It was never about being easy! It's about effort, Sonic! You never even tried! You never thought about what it's like for me, standing there, waiting for you, wondering if I'm just wasting my time! And I was! Because I was the only one who cared enough to try!"
Sonic's voice becomes sharper, but his eyes show a mix of hurt and confusion. "You think I didn't care?! Do you know how many times I've saved you? How many times I've risked everything to protect you? That doesn't mean anything to you? Just because I didn't go on a date with you doesn't mean I don't care!"
Tears form in Amy's eyes, her voice trembling. "I never asked you to save me, Sonic! I'm not some damsel in distress, and I don't need you swooping in to be my hero! I just wanted you to see me... really see me, for who I am, not just as someone who always needs to be rescued! Why, I never asked you to come here to find me! You interrupted the most special moment of my first successful date with someone who actually cares!"
There's a heavy silence as Amy's words hang in the air. Sonic's eyes widen slightly, as if realizing for the first time how deeply she's been hurt.
Sonic opens his mouth to speak, but Amy isn't done. Her voice grows softer, yet filled with raw emotion. "Every time I put my heart out there, you just brushed it aside like it didn't matter... like I didn't matter. And I kept hoping... kept believing that maybe, one day, you'd finally come around. But you didn't. You never did."
Sonic's voice softens, trying to find the right words. "Amy, it's not that I didn't appreciate what you did... I just-"
Amy interrupts Sonic, her voice full of pain. "You just weren't ready? Or were you just too scared to even try? Because it feels like every time I tried to get closer, you pushed me away... like you'd rather be anywhere else but with me!"
Sonic gets on the defensive again, his voice rising. "I'm not scared, Amy! I just... I didn't want to hurt you! I didn't want to mess things up, okay? You deserve someone who can give you what you want, and I don't know if that's me."
Amy's tears start to fall as she takes a shaky breath, her voice hoarse. "You already hurt me, Sonic. You did that when you kept running away instead of facing how I felt... how we could've been something more. But you never even gave us a chance."
There's a tense pause. Amy's shoulders slump, and she wipes her tears away with the back of her hand. She looks up at Sonic with a mixture of sadness and resignation.
Amy speaks quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. "So, there. I hope you're happy, Sonic. I finally gave up. You got what you've always wanted. I'm tired of chasing after you... tired of pretending that you'd ever come around. I've always been there for you, but... you were never really there for me."
Sonic's expression shifts to guilt, his gaze softening as he takes in her words.
Sonic reaches out to her, but Amy takes a step back, shaking her head.
Amy's voice is drained of all fight, just a quiet acceptance. "Don't. I don't want to hear it. I'm done chasing after someone who's never going to stop or come back for me. I deserve better than that. I deserve someone who sees me for who I am, not just as a tag-along. You can't fix this by cracking jokes, being optimistic or by saying sorry. I need time... time to find out who I am without you in the picture."
Sonic's hand drops to his side, and he watches as Amy turns away. The falling sun casts a shadow over her retreating form, and he's left standing there, unable to find the words to say as she walks away, leaving him to reflect on everything that's just been said.
"Uhh... Boss... You're not gonna like this..."
Eggman turns around with a frown. "Now what?"
"Our reports indicate that Team Epsilon... Uhh... Failed."
Eggman shouts. "WHAT?! How did those buckets of bolts fail?! They were specifically designed to counter Amy and that hedgehog!"
"We aren't sure what happened either, boss. Although, the recordings show that Amy and the unknown target improved their teamwork significantly since last time."
Eggman grunts. "Guess I got a little too confident. Fine, mistakes like these can happen sometimes, but they won't happen again."
Orbot presses a button, and a holographic image of Julius appears in front of Eggman. "Our troops managed to get this clear image of our new target, boss. Perhaps we can get some more information about him?"
Eggman squints his eyes. "Hmm... Now that I see him more clearly... I think I recognize his kind..."
Orbot raises his metallic eyebrow. "His kind?"
Eggman nods. "Yes... I do seem to recall doing a test on my troops on a remote village not too far away from Emerald Coast some time ago. We built a base of operations there. That village was a small, quiet and insignificant place filled with Indigo hedgehogs similar to him. A place no one would miss if it suddenly disappeared."
Orbot shivers at the thought. "So... Does he come from there?"
Eggman smiles. "He might, and if he DOES come from that village, then I know EXACTLY what to do to get rid of him."
Orbot presses a button and the holographic recordings disappear. "So, what do we do now, boss?"
Eggman smirks. "Simple. If they bested us by working together, then they'll fall apart... from each other."
Eggman laughs ominously, making Orbot slightly concerned.
Amy sniffs, wiping the remaining tears off her face as she opens the door to her hotel room.
Her conversation with Sonic could have gone better, to say the least.
Amy frowns even more. 'What's wrong with him? Why does he always run away from me? I... I was only trying to show him how much I care! I'm not in the wrong... right?'
Amy closed the door to her hotel room, feeling emotionally drained. She leaned back against the wall, letting out a long breath as she tried to gather her thoughts. Then, her eyes fix on a figure sitting on the edge of her bed.
It was Julius, who had been waiting patiently in the edge of the bed.
Julius stands up when he sees her expression. His voice is gentle, and his eyes narrow with concern. "Amy..."
Amy looks at Julius sadly. "Hey, Julius..."
Julius's eyes soften. "What happened?"
Amy looks at Julius with a defeated expression, not even surprised at the fact he managed to enter her room in her absence. "Well... Do you... remember the reason I traveled here in the first place...?"
Julius nods. "I do."
Amy wrapped her arms around herself, a slight tremor in her voice as she started to explain. "The person I was talking about all this time... Well... It's Sonic. I mean, every time I tried to get close, to really show him how much he meant to me... he just pulled away, like he's scared or something. I've done so much to make him see how much I care. All the times I asked him out, the dates I planned, the little hints I kept dropping... he just ignored them, ignored me."
Julius leaned forward, his gaze steady. "Sounds like it's been going on for a while. But tell me... Now that I've finally seen him face to face, he doesn't seem that much of a big deal. What is it about him that keeps you trying?"
Amy looks at Julius, almost defensively. "Well, he's... he's incredible. He's so strong, and brave, and he's always putting himself out there to protect people... He's free-spirited, and I just thought, maybe I could be the one he'd finally settle down for. Maybe he'd realize that, even with all his adventures, someone would always be waiting for him."
Amy frowns. "But he just... he just doesn't get it. He never tried."
Julius watches her carefully, then asks. "Have you ever thought that maybe he's never asked you to wait for him?"
Amy hesitates, a faint blush creeping onto her cheeks as she looks down. "I guess I always assumed he'd see how much I cared and... just want to stay. I know he's the type to run free, but I thought if he knew how much I wanted to be there for him, he'd stop running."
Julius's expression softened, but his words were direct. "But Amy, maybe he's not running away from you. Maybe he's just running... because that's who he is. Sonic's not the type to settle, at least not from what you're telling me. That doesn't make him heartless. It just means he might value his freedom more than anything else."
Amy frowned, crossing her arms defensively. "But I've seen him stop and help people, spend time with his friends. It's not like he doesn't care about anyone. So why couldn't he just... care about me the same way?"
Julius replies, tilting his head thoughtfully. "Maybe he does care about you, but not in the way you're hoping for. You've said you've chased him for as long as you can remember. Did you ever think that maybe you were holding on a little too tightly?"
Amy's expression grew tense, and she shook her head. "But he needs someone! With all the battles he's fought, all the times he's put himself in danger… I just wanted to show him I could have been that person. I could have been there whenever he needed me."
Julius replies, his tone thoughtful but firm. "I can see that. But from what you're telling me, Sonic doesn't seem like the type who wants someone to catch up to him just for the sake of holding him still. In his mind, maybe he's protecting you by keeping some distance."
Amy's defensive posture relaxed slightly as she considered his words, though she still looked unconvinced. "But... maybe he needs someone to show him that he doesn't have to do everything alone, right? I could have been that person. I could have been the one who's always there for him."
Julius met her gaze, sympathetic but unyielding. "I think you could have been. But would he have seen it the same way? You're a strong person, Amy, and you want someone who wants the same things you do. I also think you want someone to share your heart with, and he might not be ready or even capable of meeting you there."
Amy's expression fell, her voice wavering as she tried to find the words. "So... so you think I've been pushing him this whole time?"
Julius speaks with some pausesm trying to choose his words carefully. "Maybe not pushing, but you have been trying to fit him into something he may not be able to give. People like Sonic... they're built differently. They can care about someone deeply without changing who they are. I think he does care about you, Amy... but maybe in a different way than you hoped."
Amy's shoulders slumped as the weight of Julius's words settled over her, a sense of sadness but also clarity starting to form in her mind.
Amy murmurs, feeling both hurt yet strangely at peace. "You're saying that maybe he'll never see me that way...?"
Julius reached out, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Amy, you have so much to offer. You deserve someone who'll want to stay with you because they want to, not because you've been waiting in the wings. Maybe this is a chance for you to focus on what you want for yourself, without waiting for him to realize it first."
Amy looks down, thinking about Julius's words for a bit.
Seeing that Amy is still on the fence, Julius cups her chin and lifts her head to make her look at him in the eye. "Or... Or maybe that's just the way I see things. You don't have to think about all this right now if it's too much, Amy. It was quite a busy day, and you need to rest."
Amy looks at the window and sees that it's indeed starting to get dark. Perhaps she was too lost in her own thoughts she didn't see how late it was getting.
Amy nods. "Right... Thanks, Julius."
Julius nods. "Anytime. Well... Guess I'll see you later."
Amy frowns. "You're leaving?"
"Do you... want me to?"
Amy shakes her head. "No... I don't want to be alone right now."
Julius sighs. "Alright..."
Amy smiles softly, taking Julius's hand and walking to the bed alongside him. "We've already spent one night together, so I don't see why we shouldn't do it again."
Julius blushes softly as Amy lays on the bed alongside him. "Are... Are you sure about this?"
Amy nods as she covers Julius and herself with the sheets. "I am."
Julius smiles as Amy wraps one arm around him. "Right... Well... Good night, Amy."
Amy gives Julius a peck on the cheek. "Good night, Julius."
Sonic sprinted away from Emerald Coast, his feet pounding against the ground as the familiar sensation of wind whipping through his quills took hold. The speed, the adrenaline, it had always been his way of dealing with anything that weighed on his mind. Running was what he knew best.
But no matter how fast he moved, Amy's tearful face and trembling voice clung to him like a shadow he couldn't outrun.
'I'm tired of chasing after you...'
Her words echoed relentlessly in his head, repeating over and over. He gritted his teeth, trying to push the memory away, but it wouldn't leave.
As he sped past the sprawling fields and open skies, the usual freedom he felt on these runs was missing, replaced by a gnawing weight in his chest. He had never seen Amy like that, so upset, so hurt, so broken... And now, he couldn't unsee it.
Sonic pushed himself to run faster, hoping that the physical speed would clear his thoughts. But the faster he ran, the louder her voice became.
'I deserve better...'
Sonic winced, his heart tightening at the thought.
She was right.
He knew she was right.
Amy had spent years chasing after him, always trying to keep up, always hoping that one day he'd turn around and give her the attention she craved. And what had he done?
He'd run.
It was in his nature, after all. Running was what kept him free, what allowed him to be the hero the world needed.
But what did that make HIM in HER world?
As the landscape around him blurred, Sonic's mind began to drift back to all the times Amy had been there, ready with a smile, always supporting him, even when he barely aknowledged her presence. She had always been by his side, even when he didn't ask her to be.
That used to frustrate him, if he was being honest. He didn't need anyone looking after him, much less Amy, with her constant affection and determination to be close to him.
And yet... there was a part of him that had grown used to it.
He hadn't noticed it at first. It wasn't until now, as he tore through the fields, that he realized how much he had taken for granted. Amy's persistence, her loyalty... it had always been a part of his world, something he could count on, like the rising sun or the wind at his back. But he'd never really considered what that meant to her, how much she had been hurting in the shadows of his adventures.
Sonic's speed faltered for a moment, his heart pounding in a way that had nothing to do with his running.
How many times had he left her behind, brushing off her feelings as though they were notihg more than a passing cloud? How many times had he seen that hopeful glint in her eyes and ignored it because he didn't want to deal with what it meant? It was easier, he supposed, to keep moving forward, to never stop long enough to think about it.
But now, Amy wasn't waiting for him anymore. She had made her choice and she had found someone else. Someone who, by the looks of things, had stopped long enough to take her seriously. Someone who, apparently, made her feel seen.
Julius.
Sonic's fists clenched involuntarily at the thought of the other hedgehog.
'It's not jealousy... I'm not jealous.'
Sonic repeated that to himself. He just didn't understand. How had things gotten so complicated so quickly? How had he gone from being the center of Amy's world to... this?
Sonic pushed himself to run faster again, the wind rushing past him as Green Hill came into view in the distance. But even the sight of home didn't bring the usual sense of relief it once had. Instead, he felt... lost.
'Have I been running away this whole time?'
That thought hit him like a lightning bolt. It wasn't just from Eggman or danger or any of the countless enemies he faced. He had been running away from Amy too. From the feelings she had for him, the expectations she had placed on him.
He didn't want to be tied down, didn't want to deal with something as complicated as love or relationships.
That just wasn't who he was.
He needed to be free, to be able to race across the world without anything or anyone holding him back.
But now, he felt a seed of doubt starting to flourish in his brain.
Was that what Amy wanted from him all along? To tie him down? Or had he been too quick to assume that's what she wanted? Maybe all she had wanted was for him to stop running long enough to see her, REALLY see her. And he hadn't. Not once.
Sonic slowed to a stop, his feet skidding along the grass as he came to a halt just outside Green Hill. He stood there. staring at the familiar rolling hills and loop-de-loops, the place that had always been his refuge.
It didn't feel like home right now. Not when his mind was still back with Amy, standing in front of him, telling him she was done chasing after him.
His heart ached in a way he wasn't used to, the weight of everything pressing down on him harder than any battle with Eggman ever had. He had always been able to rely on his speed, his instincts, his ability to outpace any prablem that came his way.
But this... This was something he couldn't outrun.
He needed to think. For the first time in his life, the famous and beloved hero Sonic the hedgehog needed to stop and think about what he really wanted.
Did he want to keep running forever, leaving people behind without a second thought? Or did he want to stop long enough to figure out what Amy really meant to him?
She wasn't just a friend. Not anymore.
She was someone who had always been there, who had cared about him even at times when he didn't deserve it. And he had taken that for granted.
As the sun began to dip lower in the sky, casting shadows over Green Hill, Sonic felt a wave of uncertainty wash over him.
What did he want?
What kind of relationship did he want with Amy, if any?
Could he even fix things, after everything that's happened between him and Amy?
After seeing how much he had hurt her?
Sonic closed his eyes, taking a deep breath, the usual confidence he carried with him nowhere to be found. He wasn't used to this feeling, this sense of not knowing what to do. He was always the one with the answers, the one who knew how to solve any problem with enough speed and determination.
However, this problem couldn't be solved by running faster.
As Sonic stood at the edge of Green Hill. his thoughts swirling like the wind around him, he found himself drifting further into reflection, far deeper than he was used to.
For a moment, he wasn't just thinking about Amy. His mind began wandering back to all the friendships he had formed over the years, the bonds he hadn't expected to last but somehow had become vital parts of his life.
One name came to his mind before any other.
Tails.
Sonic remembered the day he'd met the little fox, who had been shy, awkward and clumsy back then. He hadn't cared much about Tails at first, hadn't seen him as more than just another tag-along. He was a lone hedgehog, after all.
Nevertheless, Tails had stuck around, no matter how many times Sonic sped off ahead, leaving him in the dust. And somewhere along the line, Sonic realized he didn't mind having Tails by his side.
The kid was smart, loyal, and surprisingly brave. Now, Sonic couldn't imagine a day where Tails wasn't there, working on some new invention or cheering him on from the sidelines.
Then, there was Knuckles.
That hotheaded echidna had been nothing but trouble when they first met. Sonic had seen Knuckles as just another obstacle, someone standing in his way. They had butted heads, fought, and disagreed on most everything. But after all the bickering and misunderstandings, Sonic had come to respect Knuckles.
He was strong, determined, and cared deeply for his home. Knuckles had become a valuable ally, someone Sonic could count on in a fight, and even though they still argued from time to time, Sonic knew Knuckles had his back.
How laughable!
Sonic the hedgehog, the lone wolf, with a pack of friends now!
Sonic let out a quiet chuckle at the ridiculous irony. He hadn't planned for any of this. He hadn't wanted any of this, really.
Friends were fine and all, but they could also be... distractions, ties that could slow him down, keep him from being truly free. And yet, over time, he had grown attached to them.
Tails, Knuckles, even Amy...
They were his family now, even if he'd never admit it out loud.
His thoughts circled back to Amy. She had been the most persistent of them all. Always chasing after him, always hoping for something more. He'd brushed her off more times than he could count, and yet she had never given up on him. She was different from the others in a way he couldn't quite explain. Her determination, her unbreakable belief in him... it was both infuriating and comforting.
And now, for the first time ever, he had to face the possibility that maybe he had taken her presence for granted, and she might not come back for him ever again.
'She's not chasing me anymore...'
The weight of that realization pressed down on him like a lead blanket.
Amy was done waiting for him, and she had found someone else to care for.
Julius.
Sonic supressed a grimace at the feeling twisting his gut.
Jealousy?
Guilt?
Whatever it was, it was an uncomfortable feeling, unfamiliar, like he had lost control of a race he hadn't even realized he was running.
'Did I lose her? Did I just lose someone important because I kept running?'
That question hit him hard, and Sonic found himself standing still in the middle of an open field, staring at the ground as if it held the answers. He had always told himself that being free, being untethered, was the best way to live.
No commitments, no responsibilities, just speed and adventure.
That's what made him who he was, Sonic the hedgehog, the fastest thing alive.
But now, for the first time, he wondered if that mindset had caused him to lose someone irreplaceable.
'Would Amy have slowed me down, or would she have made me better?'
The thought lingered in his mind, and he honestly didn't know the answer.
Amy was a force of nature in her own right. She was brave, passionate, and always full of energy. Maybe she would have pushed him to be more than just fast. Maybe, instead of slowing him down, she would have given him something to fight for, something to make all the running worth it.
Or maybe...
Maybe she would have held him back, made him think too much, question himself, and he would have lost the very thing that made him Sonic the hedgehog.
He honestly didn't know, but he couldn't help wondering, what if?
Sonic's heart beat a little faster as the conflicting thoughts raced through him. He had always been proud of his ability to go wherever he wanted, whenever he wanted, without anyone slowng him down. But now, as he stood there alone, the wind whispering around him, he couldn't shake the feeling that maybe being free came with a cost.
'Is this what I want? To keep running, never stopping, never letting anyone get close enough to slow me down?'
Sonic glanced back toward the drection of Emerald Coast, where Amy had left him behind. For the first time, Sonic felt the sting of doubt about his choices. If he kept running, if he stayed true to his free-spirited attitude, how many more people would he leave behind?
Would Blaze just forget about him and move on, ruling her kingdom as if she had never met him?
Would Silver find some other friends to help keep the future intact?
Would Knuckles close himself off to him like at the beginning and never talk to him again?
Would Tails not look up to him anymore, causing him to lose his little bro?
Would he one day look around and find himself truly alone, with nothing but the open road and no one to share it with?
He didn't like to admit it, but...
That thought was terrifying.
Plus, he had already driven Amy away, so it wasn't entirely out of the question for all of this to happen.
The wind picked up, rustling the grass around him, and Sonic sighed, staring out at the horizon. He had always believed that being tied down was something to be avoided at all costs. But now he wondered if maybe he'd been wrong. Maybe having people close to him, having someone like Amy by his side, wouldn't have been such a bad thing. Maybe it would have made the journey more meaningful.
'Have I lost someone important for good?'
His chest tightened at the thought, his mind flashing back to the way Amy had looked at him today, her voice trembling with frustration and pain.
He had seen it, REALLY had seen it for the first time, and it shook him.
He had always been able to count on Amy being there, but now that she wasn't chasing after him anymore, he wasn't sure what that meant for him.
And what about the others?
Tails, Knuckles, even people like Rouge or Shadow... They had all come into his life, and he had never really considered how they felt about him. Would his free-spirited nature eventually push them away too? Would they all get tired of waiting for him to slow down, to catch up to them emotionally?
'Is my way of living really THE best way?'
Sonic stood in place for a long time, the wind tugging at his quills, his thoughts whirling in a way they never had before. He didn't have the answers. He didn't know if his free-spirited nature was something he could change, or even if he wanted to change it.
But one thing was clear.
If he kept going the way he was, he should face the possibility that he might lose the people who had become so important to him.
And that thought, of being truly alone, was something even he couldn't outrun.
As the quiet of the night settled around them, Amy lay beside Julius, her thoughts churning beneath the peaceful surface. The steady rhythm of his breathing next to her was comforting, like a silent reassurance that she wasn't alone, but it couldn't still the whirlwind inside her mind. She turned slightly, gazing up at the ceiling as memories rose to the surface, old thoughts, feelings, things she'd once felt sure about and now seemed so different under the light of Julius's words.
The thought of Sonic surfaced, alongside the memories of herself chasing after him. All those times she'd run after him, pleading, sometimes even demanding his attention... it all seemed so far away, almost like watching herself from the outside.
Her heart twisted as she remembered how passionately she'd proposed marriage to Sonic, often blurting it out in a rush of excitement and without a second thought.
'If I tell ya, will you marry me?'
'Now that I've proved that I can be a good mother, you have no more excuses not to marry me!'
'Sonic! This time, there's no way outta marrying me!'
'You're the best, Sonic! Marry me!'
'You saved me, Sonic! I was afraid I'd never be able to flirt with you ever again!'
Back then, she'd convinced herself that her feelings were so genuine, so powerful, that surely he'd feel the same if he only saw her persistence, her love, and her devotion.
But now, in the stillness, Amy could see how one-sided that had been. It was like she'd written the story of her love for Sonic and expected him to play his part, without ever considering if he'd want that role. The memories felt like a strange kind of echo, one that left her feeling both fond and foolish.
Amy sighs softly, and Julius stirred a little beside her in response, though he didn't wake up. His calm presence anchored her, kept her from getting lost in that echo.
She knew Julius had faced more loss and heartache than anyone should ever have to, yet somehow he was still steady, like he was made of rock and earth, unshaken by the storms around him. There was a quiet strength in him, a way he faced the world that felt so different from her fiery passion.
Amy's fingers absentmindedly traced the outline of the blanket, as her mind drifted to all the ways she'd tried to catch Sonic's attention, ways that now felt... almost childish.
'Marry me, Sonic!'
She could still hear her own voice calling out, a plea filled with excitement and hope but also, she now realized, a sense of desperation, a need to secure him before he could slip away. It felt like she'd been clinging to an idea, rather than truly seeing him.
She let out another sigh, softer this time, barely a breath, as the weight of understanding settle over her. Sonic would never be tied down, not by anything or anyone. His very spirit was like the wind, free and always on the move.
That was what she admired about him, the freedom, the thrill, the constant chase.
But she could see now how exhausting it must have been for him, always being chased, always feeling the pressure of her expectations. He wasn't hers to catch, and that wasn't a flaw in him, or in her. It was just... the way they were.
Her gaze drifted over to Julius, his face peaceful, his expression softened in sleep. In a way, his quiet resolve grounded her, kept her rooted even in moments when she felt like she was going to be swept up in her own emotions. She realized now how much she needed that, how much she needed someone who could help her balance out her passionate nature, someone who could help her channel it, direct it, rather than letting it run wild.
Julius didn't try to change her, instead, he helped her see herself more clearly.
A small smile formed on her lips as she let the feeling settle in. Julius wasn't the one to chase, or to pressure, or to cling to. He was steady, a presence that didn't need to be chased because he was already here, already choosing to be by her side. There was no need to push, to demand, or to force anything. And as she thought about it, she felt a sense of relief that she hadn't known she needed.
Maybe, she thought, she could grow into that kind of person too.
Someone who didn't let her emotions control her every move, who could love without needing to possess. Her passion was part of who she was, and she didn't need to change that, but maybe... maybe she could learn to balance it. To ground herself, to live her life without trying to capture anyone, but rather just... to be present with them, as Julius was with her.
Amy shifted, resting her head against the pillow, her eyes soft as she gazed at Julius's sleeping face.
Being around him felt different from anything she'd ever known. He didn't pull her in like some grand adventure, like Sonic did. He steadied her, gave her something to hold onto within herself. Right now, that was something she needed more than she'd realized.
Was this what actual true love felt like?
In the quiet moments between her thoughts, she began to understand that maybe this was the journey she'd been seaching for all along. Not one of chasing or fighting, but one of growth. She'd spent so much time looking outward, looking to Sonic, to the adventures they could have, to the future she dreamed of. But now, maybe it was time to look inward, to grow from within, to let herself become someone who could love deeply without needing to hold onto anyone too tightly.
'I need to be better.'
Amy thought to herself, her heart settling with the realization. She needed to be more balanced, more thoughtful in her actions, rather than just letting her emotions carry her wherever they pleased. Maybe the change she needed didn't have to be in trying to win over Sonic or prove anything to anyone. Maybe the change she needed was within herself, to take her love and passion and learn how to temper them, to let her feelings be less like a storm and more like a quiet, steady flame.
Amy's smile softened as she reached out, gently placing her hand over Julius's cheek, feeling the warmth of his skin beneath hers.
"Thank you."
Amy whispered more to herself than to him, feeling a sense of peace settle over her heart before she planted a small kiss on his lips and snuggled her head just below his neck.
Tomorrow would be a new day, one where she'd begin the journey to become someone who could stand on her own, with strength and grace, with passion and love, but also with balance. And if she could learn to grow beside Julius, maybe that was exactly where she needed to be.
Julius found himself in his village again. The comforting sight of familiar homes and faces surrounded him, and the air carried the scent of the pine trees that lined the village's edges. For a moment, peace steeled over him, a calm he hadn't felt in what felt like a lifetime. He could hear faint laughter in the distance, the sounds of children playing, their voices bright and full of hope.
Julius moved towards them, but with each step, the ground beneath his feet grew darker, colder, and then...
Smoke.
Fire.
The air was suddenly full of ashes, thick and suffocating, like a vice closing around his lungs. Shadows began to claw their way across the village, his village, twisting every familiar sight into something ugly, charred, and broken.
Homes were reduced to rubble.
The laughter faded, replaced instantly by the echoes of frantic, panicked screams.
Julius tried to run towards the voices, but his legs felt heavy, like they were bound to the ground. His gaze locked onto the village square, where he could see the faint outline of something glowing, a light in the dark. Julius strained to reach it, until he realized what he was looking at.
The precious red gemstone.
It was there, resting in the rubble, ashes and fallen debris of what previously had been a huge temple built in its honor, faintly pulsing with a ghostly light, the last remnant of a village that no longer existed.
Julius staggered forward, reaching for it, but just as his fingers were about to brush against it, the ground split open beneath him, swallowing the gemstone into the depths.
Julius shouts, his voice breaking. "NO!"
The shadows around him only laughed.
A deep, mechanical laugh echoed through the void. "Did you really think you could save them, hedgehog?"
The voice reverberated around him, unmistakably vile and evil. No doubt it was Robotnik. The familiar sneer, the mocking cruelty... All common features of the evil genius.
Julius's heart pounded, his fists clenched as he turned, searching, ready to fight, nothing but the cold darkness pressing in from every side.
The shadows morphed, twisting into vague, faceless figures. People from his village, all staring at him with hollow, empty eyes. Their expressions were blank, their eyes void, and yet he could feel their silent accusations bearing down on him, a weight he couldn't escape.
A particular shadow hovered close to him. "You weren't fast enough... Not strong enough... Not smart enough..."
Julius winces. "M-mom...?"
The shadow taunted him, every word cutting deeper, like a blade twisting in his heart. "Do you really think you can protect anyone? You couldn't save us..."
The scene shifted. and suddenly, it wasn't the village in ruins before him, but Emerald Coast. He could see Amy fighting some of Robotnik's troops in a street, her face bright with determination. But behind her, rising like a wave of darkness, were Robotnik's forces, surging forward in a relentless tide, closing in from every direction.
The voice from the shadow spoke one last time. "You won't save her either... She doesn't even know your real name... You're going to let her down..."
Julius shouts, his voice raw. "AMY!"
Even though his voice was desperate, Amy didn't turn. She kept fighting, her hammer swinging, but for every enemy she struck down, two more took their place.
Julius tried to run to her, but again, his legs felt heavy and slow, his movements sluggish, useless, as if he were moving through a swamp or through quicksand. He pushed harder, every muscle straining, but it was like the ground itself was pulling him back, dragging him away as the distance between them stretched. His heart raced, panic clawing at his mind as he watched her fighting, each swing of her hammer slower, weaker. She was getting tired, and he was helpless to reach her.
"AMY!" Julius calls out to her again, his voice breaking, but still, she didn't turn.
Then, in one horrifying instant, Julius sees the robot in front of her shoot out tentacles like the ones they faced today towards Amy, who was too slow to dodge out of the way. The tentacles coiled tightly around her legs, wrapping themselves quickly around her waist and pinning her arms to her sides. They slithered up her body, wrapping around her torso, squeezing her with precision. The tentacles swiftly continued their relentless assault, coiling further around her, binding her tighter with each passing second. They wound around her shoulders and upper arms, effectively immobilizing her.
Then, the horror happened.
Julius almost screamed when he saw the robot deliver an electric charge to Amy's body through its horrid tentacles. Amy screamed loudly, and Julius felt as if a knife was being plunged into his heart repeatedly.
After the initial shock ended, Amy weakly opened her eyes and saw more robots about to shoot more of their tentacles at her.
The last thing Julius saw was Amy struggling weakly in their grasp as she was being ensnared, restrained and taken away by more robots.
Julius whispered, his chest tight and his breathing ragged as he fought against the invisible force holding him back. "No... No, no, no... Nonono..."
He HAD to reach her, but he was frozen, powerless, forced to watch as the darkness consumed everything in its path.
Robotnik's voice mocked him from somewhere in the shadows. "Is this really what you want, hedgehog? To be alone? To watch everyone you dare care about fall because you weren't good enough? You're pathetic. No wonder you survived. Why would I bother getting rid of someone so useless? There's no need for you to live OR die. You're nothing."
A familiar pain bloomed in his chest, the pain he'd felt so many times before, the weight of failure, of loss, of knowing he hadn't done enough. It gnawed at him, twisting like a knife, filling his mind with thoughts he couldn't shake.
'What if I'm not good enough?'
'What if I can't protect her?'
'What if I lose her like I've lost everyone else?'
The darkness around him thickened, closing in, suffocating, until all he could hear was the pounding of his own heartbeat, loud, relentless, a drumbeat of fear and regret.
The faces of his village flashed before him, though, Amy was now between them.
Their words repeated in his mind, over and over.
'Not enough, not enough, not enough.'
Then, the shadows began to thin and the nightmare dissolved completely.
Julius blinked once before looking around him.
He was in Amy's room.
Then, he starts to remember the events of the night.
He had come here on his own to let Amy sort things out with Sonic, he had waited for her, upon arriving to her room Amy had vented to him and they both talked for a bit, then Amy offered him her bed...
Then... He had fallen asleep.
Julius let out a small sigh of relief at the realization that none of what he saw had been real.
Then, he looks below him to find Amy snuggled up to him. She appeared to be having some problems sleeping too, judging from how she was squirming softly. Her head rested just below his neck, one arm draped lightly over his chest as if even in sleep, she felt the need to reach out to him.
Watching her like this, Julius felt a warmth, a kind of gentle security he hadn't realized he'd been longing for. She had this way of grounding him, pulling him back from his darkness, like a beacon he couldn't help but be drawn to.
Julius lays back enough to give Amy a small peck on her forehead, and Amy starts to relax after feeling Julius's lips.
With a quiet sigh, he glanced away from her, staring into the shadows of the room as his thoughts swirled.
Romance… it was something he'd never thought much about before.
He wasn't entirely sure how real relationships worked, since he's never felt the need to search for a partner. He'd spent so much of his life being a loner, closed off from others, that the idea of sharing himself with someone, of letting them close, felt strange, almost foreign.
Yet, as he looked at Amy, he realized he didn't mind the idea at all.
She was... special to him. Special in a way that defied words, something that went beyond mere companionship or friendship.
Julius's gaze softens as he looks at her. Since the day they'd met, something in him had shifted. He couldn't pinpoint exactly when it happened, but Amy had brought a warmth to his life that had long been absent. It was as if, bit by bit, she'd chipped away at the walls he had built around himself, each smile, each gesture, each shared moment leaving its mark on him.
Somewhere along the line, he'd started to feel a little less weighed down, a little less consumed by the anger and resentment that had once fueled him.
Julius thought to himself as his mind drifted. 'I've been so angry, so focused on revenge... But with her... it's different...'
She'd shown him that there was more to life than the relentless persuit of revenge, that there was light to be found even in the darkest of times. She made him feel... like a person again, in a way he hadn't felt since the day his village had been destroyed.
Amy snuggles closer to him in her sleep, and a faint smile tugs at the corner of his lips. He'd never imagined himself in this position, lying beside someone he cared about, someone who made him want to be a better person. And for the first time, he found himself wondering what a life with her might look like, a life not diven by hatred or revenge, but by something warmer, gentler. A life where he could let go, just a little, of the pain that had weighed him down for so long.
Gently, he moved his arms closer to her, letting his thumb brush over the back of her head as she slept. His gaze drifted to her face, peaceful and untroubled, and a surge of protectiveness welled up within him. She'd become someone he couldn't bear to lose, someone he'd fight for to the bitter end, even if it meant facing his own fears, his own weaknesses.
The thought of her being in danger, of her facing the same kind of darkness he had, sent a chill down his spine. He knew he'd do whatever it took to keep her safe, to shield her from the shadows that had once consumed him.
He wasn't naive, he knew the dangers that lay ahead, the relentless pursuit of Robotnik, the constant threat hanging over them both. But as he looked at her now, he felt something stronger than fear, a resolve that settled deep within him, steady as iron. 'I won't let anything happen to you, Amy. Not while I'm around.'
Quietly, he lifted a hand, brushing a stray strand of hair from her face, his fingers lingering for a moment, taking in the softness, the warmth. She had a way of grounding him, of bringing him back form the edge, and he realized now just how much he needed that, how much he needed her.
She was the light to his darkness, the calm to his storm, and he was grateful, deeply, profoundly grateful, for the brightness she'd brought into his life.
And so, Julius made a vow so silent it barely broke the silence of the room. 'I'll protect you, Amy, no matter what. I'll be there for you, just as you've been there for me. I don't know what the future holds, but I won't let anything tear us apart.'
He knew that words were only words, and that promises like these could be fragile, easily broken in the face of something as ruthless as Robotnik. But this promise felt different. It was something he wanted to keep, something he would fight to the very end to uphold.
She was worth it.
She'd proven that to him time and time again, and now, he wanted to be worthy of her.
For a while longer, he lay there, simply watching her, taking in the peace she radiated, letting it soothe the frayed edges of his mind. The nightmare felt distant now, its shadows banished by her presence. He felt a calmness he hadn't known in years, a quiet sense of belonging that he hadn't realized he'd been searching for.
With a final, gentle rubbing motion behind her head and one last peck on her lips, he let his eyes drift shut once more, the comforting weight of her beside him easing him back into sleep. This time, as he slipped into slumber, he felt no trace of nightmares. Only a quiet, unwavering determination, and a hope that he'd get to stand beside her as long as fate would allow.
