44. Chapter 44

Under the bright Enraoi skies, Yami stood outside his uncle's office, brushing off a small layer of dust from his cloak, waiting to receive what he hoped would be a real mission this time. Since the ordeal with Rei's clan, life had fallen back into the monotony of day-to-day work. He'd kept himself busy with training and helping around the village, but now, he longed for something more substantial. He wanted to explore the world, to be on the move with Rei by his side.

Finally, the doors opened, and Horiba, the MouKage, looked up at him with a solemn but almost expectant expression.

"Yami," he said, "it's time you took on something bigger." Horiba slid a scroll across the table. "There are reports of disturbances in Yurikasa, the northern trading region. We don't know what exactly, but people are disappearing. You'll be leading a small team to investigate."

Yami grabbed the scroll and nodded, barely able to contain his excitement. He left the office and went straight to find Rei, his footsteps quickening with each thought of the journey ahead. When he finally found her, she was training in the courtyard, her katana flashing under the sunlight. She turned, sensing his approach, and her face lit up when she saw him.

"I've got something big," he told her, handing her the scroll.

Rei read through it, her eyes widening. "Yurikasa, huh? Not too far, but remote enough for something unusual to be hiding."

After talking it over, they took a few moments to themselves, resting against the shaded walls of the training hall. Yami leaned in, resting his forehead against hers, fingers laced together as they shared a quiet moment, enjoying each other's closeness. His eyes softened as he murmured, "No matter what, we'll handle this together, yeah?"

Rei gave a small, warm laugh and replied, "Always. You and me."

Once they gathered their things, they double-checked their supplies: weapons, provisions, and cloaks for the colder nights. Every detail, no matter how small, reminded them of how close they were to setting off together on a real mission.

As dawn broke the next day, they made their way to the village gates, ready for whatever lay ahead. The air was full of possibilities, and Yami's mind raced with anticipation. A new journey was calling them, and they were ready to answer.
