When Kerchack was a young ape the gorillas and the Leopards were friends. One day Kerchack was playing too near to the cliffs edge. Sabor's mom saw the danger and quickly grabbed him back. Tragically she went over the edge and died. Sabor was devastated and vowed both to herself and to her mother she would kill every one of the Gorilla family's first infant.

So far, she had not been able to succeed but this was different. This was the ape who had been the cause of her mother's death.

"What's her name?" Sabor asked.

"Moonlight," Kerchack answered, wielding the stick.

"Suppose you give her to me," Sabor said.

"She's my daughter," Kerchack said, "I'm not giving you my child."

"My mother died because of you," Sabor said, "Now your daughter will die because of me."

She growled at Kerchack and tried to break through. From up in the tree→ Terk dropped a heavy branch on Sabor's head.

Sabor looked up in shock. Kerchak saw the light go out in her eyes. Sabor was dead.

"Well done Terk," Kerchack said, hugging his niece, "You protected the family."

"Are we going to eat her," Terk asked.

"She's too evil," Kerchak replied, "She probably got poison in her blood just to spite us."

"Uncle Kerchack," terk said, "Thank you for keeping us all safe."

Moonlight woke up. She started wailing. Kala picked her up and settled her at her breast.

"Kerchack look at her. She already is making her needs known."

"She's so calm," Kerchack added.

"Is she going to be the next family leader," Terk asked.

"Yes," Kerchack nodded, "But that is years away."

Moonlight slept until it was Sunrise. She woke up hungry. Kala was woken by her cries and settled her at her breast.

"You are a hungry girl this morning," she said gently rubbing Moonlight's back.

Kechack woke up soon after.

"We have to find a new spot," he said, "Sabor was trying to attack Moonlight. Terk killed her but when Omaine sees that she's dead he will come after Moonlight."

Omaine was Sabor's mate.

"Where are we going to go," Matto asked Kerchack.

Matto was a 16 year old gorilla and very helpful.

"We will nest across the river," Kerchack decided.

It was a full day's walk to get across the river. Gorillas can't swim so they had to walk around the river. Kerchack carried Moonlight on his back so Kala could walk more easily.
