Namine took her seat on the train heading to school, relieved to have made it in good time.
Morgana poked his head out of her bag, glancing around for a moment ''...It's as crowded as ever. I don't think I'll ever understand how people handle this sort of thing every day, it reminds me of sardines in a can...''
''Can't argue with that...'' The girl trailed off, amused. She decided to take a moment and check her messages, blinking when she found an email from her grandparents.
She had forgotten that they were filled in about her performance in the karaoke the day before yesterday by an enthusiastic Futaba. Namine didn't mind, she was used to being very honest with them. In fact, the only big secret she kept was her and the others being the Phantom Thieves. She had just gotten around to telling them about that day...
Her lips twitched as she read the email, barely noticing Morgana doing from his perch. Yuri and Itsuki expressed their delight at the news. Both were perfectly aware of their grandchild's love for music and they were saddened to learn that she couldn't bring herself to enjoy it for months. Itsuki also made his belief clear in that she must have blown everyone away. They also wanted to know if this meant she found what she needed to enjoy music again.
''Well, they sure seem happy.'' Morgana purred, seeing his companion nod. ''But you know, that's a good question. How do you feel about this? You think you enjoy music again?''
Namine stopped to think on that one. It felt like forever since she had actually had fun like that when it came to her old hobby. Sure, singing for her friends in Leblanc was nice but her feelings had been a mess at the time. Besides, so much had been going back then that she hadn't really considered it. That was the beginning-now that she looked back, she knew she missed music. Namine wasn't sure where that left her but one thing was clear in her heart: she couldn't turn away from it again.
The girl knew she had her answer ''...That'd be a yes, Mona.''
''All right!'' The cat grinned, watching her type a reply to her grandparents.
Their day at school went by quietly, Ryuji went to find the others when the last lesson ended. He came across Ann and Haru ''Hey, girls!''
The two greeted him back and he went on ''I was wondering, you think we'd be good to go to the Palace today?''
''That would be fine but I believe we should check with the others first.'' Haru offered.
Ann nodded ''I think Makoto's wrapping up some council stuff anyway so let's wait for now.''
Makoto was indeed finishing up with the council business for the day when she was found by Namine and Morgana. Minutes later, the three made to head out together only to be distracted when Morgana looked up ''Hey, I think something's up.''
Curious, the girls followed his line of sight to find Mishima talking to a couple of the girls from the other day. The first years who had been very concerned about the friend who was facing family trouble recently. The three teens' expressions showed that something was really wrong.
''Mishima-kun?''
The boy started and turned at Makoto's voice ''Oh, Senpai...''
''What's going on? You all certainly look troubled.'' Makoto added.
The girls exchanged glances, guilt clear on their faces. Mishima looked at them ''Hey, it's not your fault.''
Namine frowned ''What happened?''
''I overheard them talking about their friend the other day and I know you two and Sakamoto were there...'' The girls nodded and Mishima continued. ''...well, it turns out that problem just got a lot worse. That girl's in the hospital now.''
Makoto stiffened while Namine's eyes widened ''What? But why?''
''Akari kept telling us that this whole thing will pass and nothing else would come of it. We wanted to believe her but she was wrong...'' One of the girls started.
The other girl scowled ''That jerk Hisashi had another hissy fit and he hurt her badly. I wish we tried harder-we never should've listened to her! This could've been avoided.''
The first girl lowered her head ''Yeah...I get that he's her only family now but still-he was so mean to her for almost two weeks. You're right, we shouldn't have backed out then. If only we kept trying...''
''You tried to do the right thing by your friend, even if it wasn't easy, you wanted to respect her feelings. There's nothing wrong with that.'' Makoto offered.
Namine nodded ''You shouldn't feel guilty, you obviously care about her a lot. Just try to keep supporting her, she'll need friends by her side now.''
The two first years nodded before one of them spoke ''Thanks...say, I was thinking...Sakamoto-san suggested posting a request for the Phantom Thieves before. Do you think we should go for it?''
The second girl started ''But...what if the ongoing talk about them is true? If they kill Hisashi...''
''Wait, they wouldn't do that!'' Mishima exclaimed. ''Come on, did you forget how they helped us? If it wasn't for the Phantom Thieves, we may still have been stuck with Kamoshida. Look how many students they helped by making Kaneshiro confess too. Besides, that's all there is, just talk. It doesn't necessarily prove a thing.''
''Exactly, the Phantom Thieves are not murderers.'' Makoto stated firmly.
She was about to say more but then the sound of a phone ringing made them start. One of the first years took out her phone ''It's from Sumiko...'' The girl's eyes widened. ''...no way! Rika, Hisashi posted a request on the Phan-Site. Oh, god...''
Rika frowned ''Great, that asshole has some nerve expecting help...''
''No, that's just it-he's asking the thieves to kill him!''
The girl's mouth fell while the rest looked on in surprise ''Are you serious?!'' She quickly looked at the phone screen ''...Damn, it's true...Ako, you think Akari knows about this?''
''...I really hope not...'' The girl returned, unnerved. She looked at the others ''...Senpai, what do we do now? They're not...they won't kill him, right? I know he's screwed up big time but he used to be good to us too...What's going to happen now?''
Namine, who had also checked the Phan-Site at Ako's annoucement, spoke up then ''I think it'll be all right. Judging by the request, he's obviously feeling a lot of guilt after what he did to Akari-chan. He knows what he did was wrong, he should get a second chance. They'll understand that.''
''...I hope so...'' Ako admitted.
''Say, can you tell us which hospital Akari-chan's staying at now?'' Namine inquired, sharing a look with Makoto who nodded. ''We'd like to check up on her.''
Rika looked bemused ''...You guys really are nice, huh? Sure, it's actually close by...''
After checking that Hisashi did indeed have a Mementos Chamber, Makoto quickly briefed the others in via the group chat while they were heading over to the hospital...
SR: For real?! Damn, things got this bad?
TA: That's terrible...
SF: No kidding. What's that guy's deal? He was obviously nicer before...
NM: That's just what I'd like to find out. Sorry, everyone but I just can't focus on the Palace after this.
HN: Same here.
OH: There's absolutely nothing to apologize for, that's perfectly understandable. Please just make sure Akari-chan's all right, I can't imagine how she must feel now...
HN: We're on it. Let's go to Mementos today. The sooner we get to fixing this, the better.
TA: Yeah, it sounds like this Hiashi is in a real bad way.
YK: The request proves that he really feels immense guilt, yes? I think that's something to keep in mind when we confront his Shadow.
SF: That's for sure.
SR: Yeah, so let's do this!
The three thieves arrived outside Akari's room shortly after that. Makoto knocked on the door, then hearing a voice telling them to come in.
Akari looked surprised ''Oh, hello Senpai. You came to see me?''
''Yes, we heard about what happened from your friends.'' Makoto admitted. Akari seemed worse for wear, a few bandages were visible around her arms and leg and a particularly thick one was around her head. Her eyes were a bit red, showing that she was crying.
''Ah...'' The girl bit her lip. ''...thank you, I appreciate the concern.''
''It's nothing to be thanked for. How do you feel, Akari-chan?'' Namine inquired.
''...Honestly, I'm not sure...'' Akari admitted. ''...I knew Hisashi was facing a lot of stress now that he was my guardian and he had to take care of the two of us. He kept saying everything was fine and he wouldn't let me help...I wanted to have faith even when my friends tried to tell me not to...'' Her voice grew shaky as she teared up. ''...I never thought he'd hurt me like this...was I wrong to believe in him?''
The girl shook her head ''He's your family, it's only natural.''
''That's what I thought but...I don't know what to do...'' Akari went on. ''...The nurse told me that he was the one who brought me here. I'm not sure she even realized he was family. Apparently they tried to call him but the phone was closed. He never showed up...it's like he just stopped caring about me.''
''I don't think that's why.'' Makoto said, surpising her. ''...The thing is, you're probably going to hear about this sooner or later, Akari-chan so...''
The brunette proceeded to explain about Hisashi's request, leaving Akari floored.
Her mouth fell ''He actually...you mean this is why he just left...?''
''From the sound of it, he feels awful about what he did. He didn't specify you by name but he mentioned hurting someone he cared about a great deal.'' Makoto said with a nod.
''It sounds like he's just too ashamed to face you.'' Namine added.
Akari looked saddened ''I never thought...oh, I might be angry and disappointed with him but I'd never want him to die. Things sure changed a lot for us but he's still family...''
''She's even worried about him now...that's real nice of her.'' Morgana remarked.
''You're a good person, Akari-chan.'' Namine stated.
''You think so, Senpai? But I...'' The girl shook her head. ''...I'm scared...they're not...the Phantom Thieves won't kill him, would they?''
Namine shook her head ''Definitely not. They're going to help, he's obviously guilt ridden about all this. Maybe what he needs it a break, a second chance.''
''I think so too.'' Makoto had a thought. ''Akari-chan, I'd like you to keep what I'm about to say a secret...''
The first year gave her a curious look but nodded, hearing her go on ''...We actually know the admin of the Phan-Site. We can ask him to post a request to not kill him. He can actually get in touch with them for us too.''
''That'd be great! Please do so.'' Akari requested.
''Consider it done.'' Namine assured.
As the two turned to leave, Akari spoke up ''I...really appreciate all this. I'm sorry for doubting you before when you said you wanted to help, Nijima-senpai...''
Makoto shook her head ''It's all right, I haven't exactly given you much reason to believe me.''
''...Same goes to you, Hyakuya-senpai. Your reputation was kind of confusing with people saying all sorts of stuff but you're obviously really nice. I should've listened to you.'' Akari finished.
''Don't worry about it, Akari-chan. We've got your back now-sit right, okay? I'm sure everything will be all right.'' The girl returned.
The first year began to smile ''...Thank you, both of you.''
After everything was set, the group headed to Mementos...
''This is one unusual case here.'' Mona mused in his bus form while Joker drove down the road.
''It makes me think of Matsuoka-san.'' Fox admitted. ''Both of them seem lost in their negative emotions but they don't seem to mean any harm-not really.''
''Yeah, just goes to show there's all sorts of people out there. This may as well be a rescue mission...'' Panther trailed off.
As they closed in on the target, their path was blocked by Shadows. The enemies consisted of two Anzu, a pair of Orthrus, a Lamia, a Shiki-Ouji and a Rakshasha. The last started by using Giant Slice. As most of the group dodged that, just as one of the Orthrus used Maragi and the Lamia summoned another of its kind.
The two snake like Shadows quickly kept up the offense, one using Mazionga while the other lashed out with its tail at Skull, the nearest target.
Mona, who remembered that they were weak to wind magic, quickly summoned Zorro ''Mow them down, Magarula!''
The spell blew both Shadows, allowing him and Noir to move in and finish them off with ease. Skull charged at the Rakshasha, swinging his pipe and striking its side. The shadow countered at once, using Giant Slice and almost throwing the teen from the proximity. Panther intervened to help, giving her friend some medicine before blasting their target with Hecate's Agilao. She quickly noted how it brushed off the attack and so switched to using her gun. This didn't seem to cause much damage either but it gave Skull enough time to strike with Seiten Taisei, soon taking it down.
The Shiki-Ouji targeted Joker and Queen, activating a Mapsi spell. This hit the latter particularly hard as it was a weakness. The enemy seemed to want to capitalize on this, targeting the girl then. It was stopped by Joker, who used the Song of Harmony to shield herself and Queen, taking the enemy by surprise.
Queen pulled herself together, hearing Oracle warning her about the enemy. After a few moments, she and Panther quickly switched targets, leading to her fighting the Anzu shadows with Skull and Fox.
''Have some of this!'' Oracle pressed a few buttons, activating her new bomb trick and causing plenty of damage among the Shadows. The others captalized on this, striking back hard.
Joker and Panther combined Arsene's Mistral Soul and Hecate's Agilao to finish the Shiki Ouji off while Queen blasted the Anzu with Johanna's magic, allowing the boys to take them down. Their strikes only left one Anzu in the end and Joker acquired it as one of her masks.
After taking down more Shadows along the way, including a Treasure Demon, they found the portal to Hisashi's chamber and so went in.
The first thing the group registered was a cry of anger, quickly bringing their attention to Shadow Hisashi, who stood up ahead with a pained expression.
''What do I do? What do I do?'' He fretted. ''Even when I put up that request I...I'm still...'' He shook his head. ''...I really should die...after what I put Akari through. She was trying to be patient with me and...dammit...why?! How could I have been so stupid?!''
''...That girl was right.'' Mona had been somewhat skeptic of Akari's faith in her cousin but seeing him now... ''He really isn't a bad person...''
Noir nodded, looking troubled ''He's lost his way.''
''Then let's go do something about that.'' Skull said at last.
The Shadow stilled as it noticed them ''You all...you must be the Phantom Thieves. S-so, you saw my request?''
''We did.'' Mona returned.
''I see...'' The Shadow lowered his head, his expression becoming one of relief and sadness. ''...I really am pathetic, even if I asked you to do this, I'm still scared to die.''
''Hold on. That's not what this is about-killing you isn't an option.''
He looked up in shock at Joker's words ''What? But...but after what I did...''
''She's right. We're not here to kill you.'' Panther cut in. ''What you did was horrible, yeah. But you clearly realize that and the guilt is eating away at you-you can still do something about it.''
''What? No!'' Shadow Hisashi cried. ''How can I even...? Akari would never forgive me!''
''She is another reason we're doing this. Akari-chan doesn't know what to do-she's as lost as you are. She wants us to help you.'' Joker informed.
''No way...''
''It's true. She wants to believe-to know that her faith in you wasn't misguided.'' Queen informed.
''In the end, you're family-that has to account for something.'' Noir added.
Shadow Hisashi gave a bitter laugh ''...Yeah, you'd think it would...but I messed up so badly. We were practically raised together since her mom died in a storm years go. Then this accident came along and I've been feeling worse and worse...it's like this huge weight was dropped on me. All the responsiblity was now shoved on me, I had to take charge and it was so frustrating...I was so angry and I took it out on her. Akari's so sweet, she tried to help but I just wouldn't let her in...I think I even resented her...but now just thinking about it makes me sick. How do you expect someone like me to fix any of this?!''
Queen couldn't help but note that her situation was even more similar to Akari's than she realized earlier ''You can't just leave it at this! Akari-chan hasn't given up on you so you shouldn't give up either.''
''You don't understand! None of you do!'' He snapped. ''If you won't help then just stay away!''
Shadow Hisashi raised an arm, unleashing a wave of power that surged towards them. Joker blocked it with the Song of Harmony, to the Shadow's surprise ''You're doing it again-you blocked Akari-chan out and now you're blocking us.''
''Exactly. Why can't you do anything about this situation, huh? Just give me a reason we should just let you throw the towel.'' Mona demanded.
''Indeed, you're giving up far too soon.'' Fox added. ''You're actually steps ahead of quite a number of our targets, Koizumi-san. You actually realize your mistake and feel so terrible about it. That's why you should use this regret to fix things.''
''You really wanna call it quits man? That ain't right.'' Skull stated.
Noir spoke up then ''Yes, there's more to life than what you seem to believe. You definitely have a chance to redeem yourself.''
''I almost gave up too but those guys reminded that of the good things in life.'' Oracle confessed. ''It's thanks to them that I can keep going. That's why I know there's more out there for you too.''
Joker nodded ''You just have to go and find it-you have to believe.''
The Shadow stuttered, clearly overwhelmed by their words ''But I...I can't...''
''What about Akari-chan?'' Noir's question made him stiffen.
''Yeah, if you won't try to make things right for yourself, do it for her.'' Panther added.
''Come on, you totally care about her-that's worth something! Don't throw it all away.'' Skull put in.
Queen crossed her arms ''It's all right to mess up, it's what you do after that which really counts. We can help but Akari-chan is the one who can forgive you.''
''Right, we can give you a second chance but you have to do the same for yourself.'' Joker finished.
The Shadow's head was lowered ''I...I want to believe that...but...''
''But nothing! If you want to believe than just do so-you clearly haven't given up, not completely, so it's just fine.'' Mona cut in.
''Even if its hard, it will be worth it.'' Fox added.
''You both still care for each other, consider this your new starting line. What you do from this point will really matter.'' Queen stated.
''...Yeah...'' Shadow Hisashi spoke up after almost a minute. ''...I'm still scared of facing her but I know...I know giving up like this isn't right either. It isn't fair to her. It's the least she deserves after all the crap I put her through. I want to make it up to her.''
Noir smiled ''Then do so.''
''I will...'' He returned, his tone now strong. ''...Thank you, Phantom Thieves.''
He faded away in a flash of light, leaving a treasure behind. Mona picked it up to find it was a picture of Hisashi and Akari along with a few other people. Judging by some of the faces he was seeing, they must be the duo's family. ''...It just goes to show much they care.''
''Yes.'' Noir inspected it with a smile. ''I hope they do patch things up.''
''So do I.'' Queen put in with a smile of her own ''They deserved a second chance to make everything right.''
A while after they returned, Namine went to the Velvet Room...
Since she remembered looking up the Compendium in her last visit, she knew she could get what she needed now to fuse the twins' requested Persona...
''All right, let's keep moving to the next task before things get messy like last time.'' Caroline looked at her sister. '' No difficult questions, Justine. Just give her the assignment.''
''Understood.''
Caroline looked surprised ''You're not usually this cooperative.''
''I have no intention of abandoning my duty." Justine began."However, I would like to know the truth of this situation. After all, we possess a mysterious list which has foretold the current state of affairs. Who wrote it? Why do I recognize the penmanship? Why does observing growth feel nostalgic? And beyond that, the truth behind its creation."
"...I just said no difficult questions." Her twin grumbled.
"What's the harm, Caroline? It sounds like she's on to something, you should at least let her speak her mind." Namine stated, making the girl huff.
"I appreciate that, Inmate. You're correct, I have arrived at a hypothesis." Justine admitted.
The two girls looked at her in surprise as Caroline asked "You know the answer?!"
"Not quite, but I feel as if I found a promising lead. We manage the I mate's growth via several arcana, the symbols of this world's mystical nature. The one we share with her is the Strength arcana. The representation of great power, a mighty will and the awakening of the unknown."
"Then maybe finishing the list can provide answers..." Namine mused.
Justine smiled "Precisely. Caroline, in our interactions, has the Inmate been the only one to have had something awaken within her? Is she the only one who changed?"
Caroline grimaced "I feel so weird...what does all this mean?"
"That aside for now, there aren't many tasks left now." Justine pointed out. "I hope you see this through to the end as you promised, Inmate. If you do, the answers will be revealed."
"Ah...you're not just some random schmuck to us anymore," Caroline admitted, looking embarrassed. "You've come this far, don't you dare back out, got it?"
Namine nodded "You can count on me."
Later, as she was returning to Leblanc, Namine noticed Takemi talking to a man on a couple of streets away from the cafe...
Curious, she approached the two in time to hear the doctor say ''All the data, specimen and sample medicine are inside that case.'' Takemi informed. ''Let me know if you need anything else.''
''Based on what I read in the findings summary you sent me, the results are truly amazing. We'll perform one final exam with our experimetn and we'll be ready to treat Miwa-chan with it.'' The man stated.
''...Excellent, then the rest is up to you.''
The man noticed Namine approaching ''So this is the kid from your study, hm?''
''Yes, she's my assistant and as of more recently my guinea pig.''
''You certainly walked a dangerous line, but I'm sure you implemented the stricest of safety protocols. Please put some thought into the offer we discussed, will you...? All right, I'll call you later.''
Namine blinked ''Takemi-sensei, who...?''
''He's the doctor treating Miwa-chan.'' Takemi explained. ''He just so happened to be a year ahead of me in college. I told him everything since I was so close to perfecting the medicine. I have to thank you again. All this is thanks to you helping me with the clinic and the final trialw''
''Don't worry about it. I kind of just did what I could.'' The girl assured.
''Okay, then I guess I won't. From my tour of their medical facility and discusion I had with their development team I'm confident this will be a success and they'll complete development on schedule. The final result will be out of my hand...if I don't accept the offer, that is.''
''Oh yeah, he said something about an offer...what was that about?''
''I was...recruited. He offered me the position of research and development in his hospital...which means I'll have to close my practice.''
Namine blinked ''Oh, so you already decided...''
That was a shame though. Things were working so well...
''I start first thing next month. Unfortunately, Takemi Clinic of Internal Medicine will be gone.'' She paused, smirking at her then. ''...Just kidding.''
''Eh?''
''The part about being recruited is true but I don't intend to close my practice.'' Takemi looked amused. ''You seemed disappointed before.''
''Well...I was just thinking you're really good at what you do and you seem to like it, your patients would have been sorry to see you leave.'' Namine admitted.
''I had a feeling you'd say something like that. Well, it's true that things are looking up. I kind of like being a general practicioner. I'll still work with them to develop new medicine though. Once the medicine's perfected, I'll be able to see Miwa-chan and receive my reward: her smile.'' Takemi smiled to herself.
''Yeah, I bet it'd be great.'' Namine returned.
''Ah, speaking of rewards, I need to give yours. You held up with me pretty well even when I just sprang it all on you out of the blue.'' The doctor paused. ''I'll think of something.''
''So how about we do something to celebrate this breakthrough? Something to mark the occasion after all you've done,'' Namine stated.
Takemi seemed a bit surprised by the suggestion but shrugged ''Well, all right-what did you have in mind?''
''Hmmm, how about we get some cake? That shop over there sells some amazing kinds.'' The girl returned, pointing at a building to their far left. ''Since we both agree that Boss' coffee is practically unmatched, we can stop at Leblanc.''
''...You drive a hard bargain. Let's do it.'' She remarked. They had actually talked about coffee before and both were of the firm opinion that Sojiro's was the best.
Namine perked up ''Let's go!''
Takemi spoke up when they were about to enter the shop ''I hope this doesn't mean you're planning to make the coffee. I'm not about to settle with third rate drinks today.''
Her assistant harrumphed ''I'll have you know I'm a lot better now.''
Takemi merely gave her a look, knowing her annoyance was completely feigned. Namine cracked then ''Well I had to say something...besides, it's true.''
The doctor chuckled ''Sure, sure...by the way, I was thinking of introducing you to Miwa-chan. I just get this feeling you'd get along pretty well. How's that sound?''
Namine smiled ''Great!''
''Well, how about that?'' Sojiro looked pleased when Namine told him about the turnout with Takemi. Naturally, she kept any details about how she helped with the trials to a downlow. Not that she regretted her choice but she worried how he would take it.
''That's definitely good news. I wondered about you ever since the news about that Oyamada came out. No wonder you haven't been around in a while.'' The barista continued. ''I remember what it was like back when you first arrived in Yongen-Jaya. Good to see you're doing so well.''
Takemi smiled ''Thank you, Boss. I intend to come around more in the future...the kid and I agree that your coffee's top-notch.''
''Really now? Glad to hear it.'' He stated. Both glanced at Namine, who was cutting up the cake and placing it on plates for the three of them in the kitchen while talking on the phone. ''You've been a lot more lively ever since Namine got to be your assistant. I see she's grown on you.''
She chuckled ''Before I really knew it, the clinic just wasn't the same without the kid. I think a lot of my patients would agree when I say that it's really hard not to like her.'' Takemi gave him a sharp look. ''Tell her I said that and I will ensure you know how dangerous it is to have a doctor out to get you.''
Sojiro smirked ''My lips are sealed.'' He picked the coffee pot up. ''I actually agree with you-I took her in as a favor to some old friends but looking back, I'm glad I did. Those idiots who tossed her out don't know much they've lost.''
''Absolutely.'' Takemi had heard Namine's story on of her more recent visits. She was of the opinion that the people of that town were bastards who did not deserve her assistant. ''Well, it's their loss and our gain.''
''That's for sure.'' He returned.
Well, let's stop here.
I just finished editing the older chapters, adding and removing some stuff and all. In case I got anyone confused, Igor's the Aeon confidant for reasons related to my plot. I've had the Phantom Thieves as a whole become the Fool confidant since I like the idea a whole bunch and I can have fun with it.
I figured since I started something different with Hijiri's situation, I might as well try an idea along these lines. Hisashi was never going to fight. Hell, if anyone challenged the shadow in that state, he might as well just roll and let them kill him. But now, he'll get a chance at redemption. I've been thinking of trying this angle with Takemi for a while. She finally gets a chance to finish the drug and save Miwa in the end. I wondered what resolving would be and in case the twins seem a bit out of character, they're just more open to Namine since she's been taking them on these outings.
Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy it. Till next time!
