Vangran: Thanks! Not sure if I mentioned this before but I've been changing around Akechi's backstory a little. So yes, while he's keeping quite a few things to himself, the story he told them is all true. I'm glad you think Nakamura's story was in good timing. Honestly, I was torn on that issue for a while but I finally decided it was best to use it there. I wanted to make sure that they understand how bad revenge could be so they're going to look at the situation somewhat differently now.
Opening: Black Bullet by FlipSide
Even as she continued on her way to meet her friends, Namine's thoughts drifted to a conversation from the previous night.
It had taken some time but she managed to work up the nerve to follow Sojiro and Takuto's advice regarding the family situation. Much to her surprise, the two were proven right as Yuri and Isuki wouldn't even hear of her blaming herself. Itsuki made it quite clear that if anything, her own parents were responsible.
Yes, of course they'd been hurt due to the fallout but at the same time, they would never regret choosing to support her. Not only was it the right choice, it was the only one they'd accept. She knew they were proud of her for taking a stand that night, bad as it turned out to be and that had yet to change.
It was so strange. She'd thought her life was over after that night, a sentiment only reinforced after the couple of days she spent in jail. Not only did it just reinforce how her life was upended, that everyone she thought she could count on truly abandoned her. That everything went down that night exactly as the man said. Namine was ashamed to admit it but after that, she had trouble believing that Yuri and Itsuki really did want to be there at all. It seemed too good to be true.
After that, she'd simply decided to roll with the probation and keep her head down. But of course, things couldn't be that simple.
'Do you regret it?' Arsene quiered.
''You know the answer. Kamoshida was such a disgusting excuse for a human being that I couldn't ever just do nothing.'' Her voice may have been barely above a whisper but her resolution was iron clad ''And it seemed pretty obvious that he had me in his sights even if I hadn't taken a stand back then. Things were rough, sometimes I wish we had another way besides this method. I don't want to take freedom from anyone, that's important to me but I'd still rather do that then just turn away while people are suffering. There's still a lot I want to figure out but I don't regret my choices.''
A chuckle 'Good, very good. It is only human to doubt oneself but you are a protector just as much as a rebellious thief. Embrace those traits and allow them to guide you down this path.'
Lips quirking, Namine gave a happy hum. Perhaps this was another example of the emotional clarity obtained by persona users? Either way, she liked it.
Yuri had informed that everything was set up and they would soon come to the city, beginning their new lives together. Things may have been rough but they would endure, they were still a family after all. Namine was forever grateful for their enduring support. She hadn't realized how much she needed that talk earlier.
Overall, it felt like a great weight was off her shoulders. Namine truly couldn't wait for the day of her grandparents' arrival.
Barely aware of his surroundings, Takuto's thoughts drifted back-back to how he came to be here...
The center he'd worked so hard to set up had been ruined before it could even open, his research disappeared. Everything he'd put all that work for, gone in a single night. If it wasn't for Rumi staying by his side, Takuto wasn't sure he could've picked himself up again.
People may have brushed off what happened to the center as a freak accident but Takuto knew better. The way the incident took place just after those people made their interest in his research clear. He'd thought that was the end of it when he turned them down but...
He couldn't prove anything though, so Takuto told himself to leave it be. At the very least, he had been able to keep working here and reach out to others. He was truly able to turn things around since that day...
Despite this, a part of him wasn't satisfied. Even if he tried to tell himself that things were fine like this, he didn't feel that way. Not really. But what could he do to change that?
As they had made very good progress in the Palace, the Phantom Thieves agreed to go to Mementos. While they intended to prioritize changing Okumura's heart, they couldn't ignore other problems out there.
Oracle had found a request about the son of a prominent family, suspected of embezzling funds. The sender was too scared to speak about this in the open as their uncle had actually discovered this first. But somehow the man implicated the sender's family and escaped just like that.
''No idea how the creep pulled it off but the uncle was sent to prison and he lost everything because of that case.'' The hacker relayed,
Skull didn't even realize he'd ground his teeth until then ''Bastard...we've gotta do this...!''
''Guys, heads up!'' Mona called as shadows appeared in their path.
Everything started going strange when Takuto was fiddling with his phone. The area suddenly...went loopy for a lack of a better word. Black and red invaded his vision for almost a minute, his surroundings completely changing.
One would naturally believe this to be cause for concern but it wasn't a precedent. In fact, he'd been getting such odd visions for some time now. Having initially dismissed them as a hallucination, their numerous recurrences put a hole in that reasoning. He had no idea just why this kept happening. The strangest part was that it seemed to mesh with what he learned from Cognitive Pscience, almost like he'd been seeing the cognitive world. But could it really be...?
Takuto could still recall seeing some strange beings right out of stories and even hearing voices and the sound of a train. None of it made any sense...
A slight glow from his phone caught his eye, noticing the eerie eye peering up at him from the screen...
''Uh, guys...? I'm picking up on something...''
Panther's first instinct was to ask if it was more Shadows but the girl's tone tipped her off ''What's up?''
''That's...kinda what I'm trying to figure out, actually. Pretty sure there's a person wandering around here.'' Everyone stopped short ''And I know it's not a persona user, they just popped up there.''
''But that makes no sense, just why...?'' Mona started, puzzled.
Queen moved things along ''Forget that, Oracle, can you give us a location? We need to get them out of here.''
''Oh, right!'' The girl shook herself. ''Let's go!''
Fortunately, finding the person was much easier than they expected.
Skull's jaw dropped, almost uttering the man's name in his shock. Thankfully, Fox was quick to cover his mouth, giving him a moment. Nodding gratefully, both looked back at Takuto. The man terse stance said he hadn't expected to come hadn't come across anyone either...
But considering what he knew... ''Could you be...the Phantom Thieves?''
Skull finally verbalized the question he knew everyone wanted an answer to ''What're you doing here?!''
''Ah, actually...'' He rubbed the back of his neck ''...I'm not quite sure myself...I just found myself here a little while ago.''
Fox didn't hesitate to make his skepticism clear''That shouldn't be possible. We are among the few who can come and go from this world but we have a method to allow that. It isn't something just anyone can access.''
''Well, I don't know about this method but...'' Takuto faltered. ''...this sounds crazy but I found this strange navigation app. At first I thought it was just some sort of malware so I got rid of it but it just kept reappearing for quite some time. I tried it before but when nothing happened, I assumed it didn't work. I couldn't make heads or tails out of it. My attempt to use it wound up bringing me here.''
Strange as it all was, the group couldn't see any sign of deception from him. He was clearly rather lost about all this. But how did he come to have a Metaverse Nav?
His attention was currenly on Mona ''Are you...a cat?''
The usual protest died in his throat in light of certain recent events ''I'm hardly the strangest being you'll find here.''
''So this is Mementos...the cognitive world, correct?'' Takuto inquired.
This didn't come as much of a surprise as it should've been since they knew he was a Metaverse researcher but they had to be discreet ''And exactly how do you know of this world?''
''I've been studying for almost three years now. I only know that word because I heard some voices mentioning it. I couldn't see anybody but I heard some people talking...''
''Well, either way, you have to go.'' Panther stated. ''This place is too dangerous. We can show you how to leave...''
''I appreciate that, but I'll have to refuse. Now that I know for sure...there's something I need to see about this place.''
Noir frowned ''I understand your interest given your work but all the same...''
''No, it's about that.'' He returned. ''Though I won't deny that it would motivate me...I feel that there's something awaiting me here. But mainly, there's something I simply need to see for myself. Did you receive a request about a man named Hakuba Toudou?''
As that was the name of their very next target, the group hadn't seen that one coming. ''Why do you know about that?'' Noir queried.
''I suspect the sender is one of my recent patients, I'm a therapist, you see. The sender came to talk to me about some trouble with their family and he mentioned that man, the one involved in his uncle's imprisonment. They were quite close so this hurt him a great deal. I actually watched him send the request...'' Takuto paused. ''...I didn't realize it until I saw his picture in the papers but I know that man...''
He briefly recounted the incident with his research center, the team left more sympathetic as they gained a clearer picture of the truth.
''And that Hakuba guy was with those shady people who wanted your work?'' That sounded far too familiar for Oracle.
''He was leading them, actually. But I never got a name and something about them just seemed far too suspicious. I highly doubted they could be trusted so I didn't cooeprate. I realized he was likely to have a Shadow in this world. My reputation crashed and burned after that incident, only my friends' help let me get this far. I've felt so helpless after that incident. I know it might be a long shot but I simply want some answers. The app wanted a location as well as a name. I can't live with myself if I don't take this chance.''
Noir couldn't help but relate ''...Let's take him along.''
''Wha-Noir!'' Panther started to protest.
''Panther, he's perfectly in his right to want the truth.''
Oracle gave Takuto a once over ''This guy...maybe I was wrong...''
''You noticed too? I think there might be more to Maruki than meets the eye.'' Mona muttered.
The team was torn. Some agreed with Noir and others remained of the opinion that it was best they get him out of here. Joker put a stop to this. ''Guys, if you think about it, we can't stop him. Not when he has the Nav. And if it means this much to him, then he's likely to insist. Isn't it better to help out now and keep an eye on things?''
''Well, you've got a point but...'' Skull's brow furrowed, uncertain.
Queen knew she couldn't argue with the reasoning either ''All right, we'll take you along. But you have be very careful and do what we say.''
''Of course, thank you.''
Introductions were made and the group made to leave with their unexpected guest in tow...
Takuto could only stare at Mona's other form ''That must be useful; you're a special little guy, aren't you?''
A happy hum ''As you can see.''
Skull couldn't help himself ''Don't feed his ego.''
Joker half-smiled as she got in ''Well, it's not like he's wrong.''
''Aw, Joker!'' Mona purred happily, Queen beginning to drive.
Takuto looked around with growing interest ''Hm, a cat turning into a bus-reminds me of My Neighbor Totoro.''
Mona's confusion rose as he noticed some of the others recognizing the name. Queen's tone one of realization ''I never considered that, it could have to do with this ability even coming to be possible...''
''Oh yeah, the movie was such a big hit, I bet loads of people heard about it even if they hadn't seen it.'' Panther mused.
''Hey, if even Inari knows what we're talking about, that clears it.'' Oracle ignored the artist's unimpressed look as both she and the blonde snickered.
''We should watch it sometime, Mona-chan. It's quite fascinating.'' Noir suggested.
''Yeah sure, I'm pretty curious now!''
Takuto seemed fairly amused ''It's strange-for some reason a few of you seem a little familiar but I can't be sure why.''
Only the fact that their Personas obscured their identities kept them silent, Oracle choosing to move things along ''So...you said you were researching this world?''
''Yes, I was inspired by Dr. Isshiki's work and the sheer potential it held. I simply started following what she managed to post online and I kept going from there. Also...well...'' Oracle tilted her head ''...I'm not sure you'd believe me...''
A snort escaped Skull ''Have you seen what we deal with?''
''Yes, in my opinion, learning about this world would leave one with an open mind.'' Noir added.
''I certainly won't argue there.'' Takuto nodded ''Well, my desire to learn brought me down this path but...for some reason I've been having visions of this place.'' The listeners shared bewildered looks ''I couldn't make sense of them. That's why I stayed away from the tunnels-I remember seeing some eerie figures there. I heard a few distant voices mentioning the word Mementos. With that and what I heard about Hakuba...'' A pause ''...I take it that's precedent to you?''
''Uh, yeah...'' Skull managed, bewildered. ''...I mean some of us wound up here by accident but that's definitely a first.''
''Just when I think this world couldn't get weirder...what does this even mean?'' Queen breathed.
Mona figured their suspicions were accurate ''I think he has the potential, you guys.''
The implication was clear ''Seriously?''
Joker picked up on their guest's confusion ''It's complicated, Maruki-san...there's somethings we might not be able to explain.'' How much could they even share? The man had been nice but they hardly knew him?
But he seemed to recognize the problem ''You don't have to tell me if you don't want to. I'm not expecting you to trust me-I'm grateful you let me come now. That's enough.''
Something about his earlier words was bothering Fox ''You mentioned feeling something awaiting you...''
''Ah, that...'' Takuto faltered. ''...honestly, I'm not sure myself. It's just this strange and strong feeling that I need to be here today. It's as if this feeling wells up from deep within me...If I didn't know any better I'd say it would be my Shadow but I haven't seen it...''
Oracle's eyes narrowed behind her goggles, chalking it up as another sign that she and Mona were right.
''Now that's definitely strange. Anyway...what happens if you were right-if Hakuba had something to do with what happened to the center? Are you looking for revenge?'' He'd always seemed so nice to Panther but it was understandable for him to want payback.
But the answer was unexpected ''No. Recently, a wise person pointed out the trouble with revenge to me. It won't do any good, not really...and it certainly won't change a thing...''
Joker had to fight to keep herself from reacting. Did he mean her? She had that much of an impact on him? She had just been saying what she felt though...
''...I'd just focused on trying to get back on my feet and in the end, I've decided to move on. But to truly do that, I need some answers. It's bad enough that the incident caused so much trouble but it even hurt Rumi...I want to find out just what happened back then.''
''...We know just how you feel.'' The red clad thief assured.
Queen could understand why their friends decided to give him this chance ''Yeah, we became Phantom Thieves to bring unseen evils into light and fight for those whose voices can't be heard. We've all suffered because of powerful people who oppressed others, so we're taking a stand.''
''Yes. If we have the power to make a difference, we should put it to good use.'' Noir stated.
''I see...'' Takuto started. ''...those are fine goals. But it's sad that you have to go to such lengths to make them happen.''
''What do you mean by that?'' Mona demanded, taking umbrage.
''He's right, Mona. Our endeavors also show how corrupt society can be, we know that too well.'' Fox's statement silenced any of the feline's arguments.
''Yeah, even what we do...in a way, it's a cruel mercy. There's a reason we're so careful with our power, remember?'' Joker's stance was well known to the whole team by now and while they were a bit mixed up on that, most of them had come to a similar line of thinking after their popularity spiked and learning what people thought of them during and after the school trip.
Takuto looked on with interest. He'd known they meant well but the fact that they used their abilities with such precision was definitely a big plus. If the situation were any different, he would've loved to hear about all they came to learn.
What a day this was turning out to be...
As they traveled through the tunnels of Mementos, the group took time to tell Takuto a bit about their powers.
''So you turn the power of the Shadows into your own...'' He trailed off. ''...it's as if you faced your weaknesses and triumphed. That's incredible!''
''You got the gist of it already. I guess that shouldn't be a surprise with someone of your background.'' Mona mused. ''But yeah, you summed it up well. That's just another reason why Persona Users have to be strong of heart. If they become weak and lose themselves, their power would fail them. Even worse, the Persona could turn against them.''
''I see...''
''So I gotta ask...'' The former went on. ''...you clearly had your suspicions about what happened to all your hard work, didn't you try to find out the truth before?''
''...It was just no good...'' A sigh ''...I didn't even know who Hakuba was at the time. When I tried asking about him and some of the others I had seen, I found a few people who warned me to leave it. They had also been oppressed by powerful people and they thought it was simply best to walk away and keep what I have. In the end...it looked like there was nothing I could do so I suppose I gave up. Even if I hated how all of this went down, I convinced myself that it couldn't be helped. Still...''
''But you can't accept that, can you? Not really.'' Oracle noted shrewdly.
''...No, even if I tell myself otherwise, I can't.''
They arrived at Hakuba's Mementos Chamber moments later, quickly spotting the man in his thirties with slicked back dark hair and sharp eyes in a suit. Shadow Hakuba seemed to be rather aggravated, his eyes flashing as they heard him mutter something to himself ''...what a waste of my time. They're all so pathetic-thinking they can beg me for favors. So what if we once worked together? Screw them-it's their fault for being weak. I will do what I can to reach my goals. Anyone in the way should just roll over and accept their place.''
Noir pursed her lips ''So he hurt more people for the sake of his goals...how long has this been going on?''
''Long enough.'' Queen declared with finality and they approached the shadow.
''Hm? What're you all...?'' S. Hakuba arched an eye, his gaze settling on Takuto. ''...oh, speaking of pathetic people-what the hell are you doing here, Maruki? I thought I'd seen the last of you when you turned our generous offer down.''
''So you really were behind the doc's work getting ruined!'' Skull accused.
''What about it?'' A sneer. ''The research could've been useful for our plans. He could've actually benefited from working with us but he had to be a fool.''
Takuto's fists clenched, the feelings of anger, sadness and pain rising up at these words. He may have gotten some of his answers sooner than expected but it did not make this any easier. But his thoughts were put to a halt by Joker's next words.
''Hold on, our plans?'' Neither missed the Shadow freezing up ''Who else is in on this?''
''Th-that's got nothing to do with you!'' Despite the attempt at anger, the fear in his eyes spoke louder. Something was up. ''Is that what this is about? Did Maruki drag up a bunch of kids to help him? As if it would make a difference, what's done is done, you fool.''
''I know. I've realized that I can't bear to leave things as they are-I want to learn the truth. Just why did you approach me back then-how could you use my research? The fact that you knew what you did of this world proves that you were aware of its existence for a while before last year at the very least. Were you behind that fire?''
''Oh, is that what this is about? Good grief, you really are pathetic. What difference would knowing the truth make?'' He scoffed. ''Whatever, you should be glad you were lucky enough to come out as you did.'' Takuto was about to retort but the man went on. ''Fine, yes-I didn't cause the fire but it was my idea and I made sure it could work. You wouldn't cooperate so I had to take you out of the picture. It had to be done. Once again, smart people prove to be complete fools. It would've been the end for you if the fool handling it hadn't been bungled things up.''
The realization of what a close call that had been sent a chill down their spines, Panther scowling ''You wanted to kill him too?!''
''That's right, so what? Didn't I say it? Anyone in the way will be taken down. This goody two shoes refused to work with us despite how useful it could've been for all of us. He's as foolish as that woman.'' Oracle clenched her fists ''He just thought that work could be used to help people-how naive. That information can be used in a far more productive manner.''
Everyone stared at the man in disgust. Not only did he not even care to hurting innocents for his selfish goals, he had just admitted to wanting Takuto dead just for turning his offer down a year ago. And going by what he let slip, he was just part of a large group...the group that seemed to have been involved with the death of Oracle's mother...
''Of all the selfish...'' Mona hissed.
''You think its okay to just stomp all over others so you can get what you want? You practically ruined a man's life to cover up your own crimes. Clearly he and Maruki-san were far from the first, you're scum!'' Queen snapped.
''As if I care what a bunch of kids pretending to be heroes think.'' The Shadow fired back. 'It doesn't take a genius to figure out that you're the Phantom Thieves. Don't go getting a big head because of some fame; you're nothing out there, not to the people who matter. You're as weak as any of those other fools, the weak are crushed by the strong.''
''Oh, shut it, you bastard! You're gonna answer for all you've done!'' Skull snapped.
''Please. I'll make sure you can't get in our way again. I'll show you how powerless you are!'' The next thing they knew, he transformed into a King Frost shadow. ''You were all interested in knowledge about this world, how about I do one favor before I finish you off? Here's a sample from what we learned!''
With a wave of his hand, the area near the walls seemed to explode, black waves erupting from them. The waves suddenly gathered, forming thick black spiky vines that closed in on everyone, surrounding them in a wide circle. The shadow then proceeded to slam his scepter on the ground. Seconds later, three shadows, two Decarabias and an Ananta appeared. ''Attack!''
He cast Marakunda while the Decarabias proceeded to blast the group with Megidola. The group tried to defend themselves but the attack came too fast, the fact that they also had to keep on Oracle and Takuto impeded them. Any false movements could leave the two wide open with the area being closed off thanks to the vines.
Realizing this, Oracle took the therapist with her and retreated as much as they could. ''Guys, I don't know how but he charged those shadows up-they're way tough. Be careful!''
Queen was suddenly reminded of their battle with Sugimura. The shadows had been somewhat stronger but it was only due to the distortions. Sugimura's shadow just had a lot of power on his side so it was all just by luck and plain force. Here it was bound to be much worse as Hakuba's shadow clearly knew quite a bit about about the Metaverse. ''We'll do something about this, analyze them.''
''Got it!''
Fox, Panther and Skull targeted the three shadows around the King Frost. The Decarabias were able to avoid the boys' weapons and for some reason, none of their spells worked. Their targets hardly even moved, though the Ananta seemed to create a wall of some kind that repelled Seiten Taisei's lightning. The enemies quickly launched a counter attack, one of the Decarabia using Agidyne on Skull, which he dodged. The Ananta launched a Mafrelia at all three but it was negated by Joker's Song of Harmony.
''What the-?'' The King Frost frowned. ''That doesn't look like a Persona power, how'd you do that?''
Joker naturally ignored him and took out her dagger. The second Decarabia stopped her impeding attack with a Tetrakarn, protecting it and Hakuba. Knowing it was a one-time shield, she switched to her revolver to take care of it. The King Frost just laughed, thinking that worked. Something he quickly regretted when Queen and Noir struck then, blasting both Shadows with fists and magic.
''You may have learned plenty about this world; you're no different from the other corrupt people we faced. Even if you keep trying to oppress people, we're always going to stand and fight.'' Joker's stalwart declartion was naturally met with her team's agreement. .
Growling, the shadow cast Mabufudyne but they were able to dodge it due to the distance. Undaunted, he waved his scepter; some of the vines around them were suddenly propelled towards them. A surprised Mona jumped up to avoid one heading his way while similarly, Fox quick side stepped to dodge another one. As the cat cast healing magic for himself and his friends, the King Frost spoke up ''How do you like that? I control everything here. Let's see you try to win!''
''Don't hold your breath!'' Skull's attempt to smack with his club was foiled by the Decarabia shielding him. Panther tried to burn the vines with Hecate's flames but they were ineffective for any vines she burnt quickly grew back. She also found that they didn't work on the shadows either, but why...?
Oracle soon began clearing the confusion ''Guys, I figured it out! Hakuba's weak to fire but the Decarabias can stop all fire attacks. The Decarabias are weak to ice magic but Hakuba and the creepy snake absorb it. The snake's weak to lightning but it has an ability to buff them up and reduce damage. We can't destroy those vines because some of his powers are running through them.''
''I see. What an elaborate set up.'' Fox remarked. ''Well then, let's keep going.''
''Yeah!''
The King Frost harrumphed ''Even if you do know, it won't make a difference.''
The fight continued at this pace, almost as if in a stalemate. Both sides were not giving an inch, determined to win. While Skull distracted the King Frost with a blow to the head and Joker shot at the Ananta, Fox was able to dispose of the Decarabias with Goemon's ice magic.
The enemy leader responded by summoning four Decarabias at once. Two of which attacked with fire magic while the others guarded him. Oracle's fists clenched as she watched the battle continue. They may have come here because of pure chance but the Shadow's words raised quite a few questions. And there was one she particularly wanted an answer for.
Takuto had assumed that his research had gone up in flames with the center, left with no reason to suspect otherwise. But looking at this situation, he couldn't help but wonder if Hakuba and his cohorts had gotten their hands on it. Truth be told, the visions of this world had been frightening and he kept trying to look away. But the more he came to learn, the more he realized he could actually use-he could do some good with his knowledge. Until that night...
The Phantom Thieves had really gone out of their way to help him. They had not only heard him out but understood and sympathized with him. His background helped him realize that their operations were carried out in the Metaverse. Meeting them showed that there was far more to them than anyone could imagine, if Joker's words and their stance were any indication, their fight wasn't about heroics. They were a group who had been hurt by society at one point or another. But they chose to push that entirely aside, to do their best to reach out to others and help them, no matter how hard it was. He understood the feeling all too well, seeing them in action was certainly an inspiration.
And yet here he was, only watching as they kept fighting against another corrupt figure. Someone who had hurt him and many others-he still remembered the scandal after what happened to the center. His reputation was practically destroyed and even some of his friends were mocked and slandered for being associated with him. That was his motivation for wanting to learn the truth, for his wish to make things right. But here he was, only watching...could he do something about this?
'You can.' His eyes widened as he tried to look for the source but found nothing there. He was soon distracted by the battle...
Oracle quickly used her bomb trick to blast the shadows summoned by the King Frost back. This helped the group move in to divide and conquer, finishing them off in a few attacks. However, no one was too surprised when the King Frost called on two Decarabias and Anantas again.
''There, you see?'' He smirked. ''Whatever you do, it's useless. Eat this!''
The shadow used Mabufudyne once more but it was stopped by the Song of Harmony, making him growl in aggravation. Oracle knew that even if he wasn't showing it, her friends were wearing him down. He couldn't keep doing this forever.
''Hmph, struggle all you want. You think you're making a difference? As if! You have no idea what you've gotten yourselves into.'' The enemy leader stated. ''You think you can play hero and help that idiot get some answers? Well, what good would any of that do? The plans will succeed. Everyone who stood in the way paid for it. Like she did, and like this fool did too. It'll be the same for all you-it serves you all...''
He didn't get further than that as Skull chose the moment to stun him with a few bullets ''Oh, shut it, you damn wind bag! We're not gonna lose to you!''
Grunting angrily, the shadow retaliated with a blast of ice at him. The teen quickly got out of the way but his gun was frozen in an instant. Mona summoned Zorro to defend Takuto and Oracle from another of the vines ''You have your answers, Maruki. Hakuba's nothing but a lowlife who got away with so much because he's powerful. He even wanted to kill you for his own selfish reasons. Where do you go from here?''
That was an excellent question. Where did he go from here? ''...I felt powerless for so long...so useless. I tried convincing myself that I was lucky to get off like I did, that I could keep going and make things better. I still wanted to find ways to deal with the pain of the heart. I was preparing to try again-but I couldn't just move on. And now I know why...I had it all wrong. Those were all excuses for the fact that I was avoiding the problem. I convinced myself that there was nothing I could do-I gave up. I thought I could use my work for good but to think people could twist into something like this...perhaps I really am pathetic...''
''No, you most certainly aren't.'' Fox stated. ''If anything, I believe we could do with more people like you around.''
Joker nodded ''You weren't wrong to want to help people. We've seen plenty of the cognitive world, how dangerous it could be...and how it could be used for the good of people. But that has to be done the right way, that's why we're here. We all what it's like to be alone out there and think you're powerless, that's why we fight. We've taken our masks off and now we face life with all our power, come what may. If we can do that, so can you.''
That actually sounded really good to Takuto right now. He suddenly had that strange feeling again. That certainty that he needed to be there today...something resonating from deep within...''I'd like nothing more...I don't want to simply stand back-never again!''
'Excellent.'
He stiffened as the mysterious voice reached him again, feeling a sharp pain pierce his skull then. 'So you've made your choice. Very well, the time has come.'
Everyone stared as he doubled over, blue flames flashing around him. Mona smirking ''Here we go!''
Takuto couldn't register anything but the pain and the strange new power welling up, it felt both familiar and foreign. Like something he'd always had but never quite understood until now. He just barely glimpsed an apparition of himself with golden eyes as a black and gold mask covering the top half of his face appeared 'Seeker of wisdom, thou started on this path for the good of all. Thine dream may have been cut short but this is not the end. Thou has been granted a second chance, so take it with both hands. Rise. It is time for you to fight as well, to remove the stains of corruption cast upon society. This is thine new beginning.'
''...Right.'' So this was what Mona meant by his potential. No wonder he hadn't seen any sign of his Shadow...
With one final pull, he took his mask off and it exploded in a blaze of power. Behind him appeared a tall, human-like figure clad in gold and light blue armor, floating in mid-air.
The enemy leader spluttered at the sight while Takuto stared at the new arrival in awe, not even noticing his Soul Armor appearing. He was now clad in a light blue, black and gold luxurious tunic and pants, along with black boots. There was a staff strapped to his back as well. It was reminiscent of the magicians of the olden days. ''Is that...my power?''
Panther couldn't help the smile on her face ''Definitely!''
''Hell yeah! This shit never gets old! Come on, Doc, it's time we kick some ass!'' Skull grinned.
Takuto began to smile ''Go, Adam Kadmon!''
The new Persona raised an arm, conjuring a powerful Megidola that rained on the enemies, destroying two with ease. When one of the Decarabia attacked in retaliation, Adam Kadmon was able to swat it away with ease. Their enemy watched in shock and growing fear as the shadow vanished, making him quickly summon more. He thumped his staff angrily and one of the Ananta cast Marakunda at once.
''Heads up, they've buffed up their defensive abilities!'' Oracle warned.
Skull just laughed, making Mona eye him strangely ''What's with you?''
''Just goes to show we've got him scared, don't ya think?''
A smirk ''Good point.''
The outraged King Frost attacked the pair with Megaton Raid, which they were able to dodge. But he wasn't done, commanding the Shadows to attack. A number of spells flew at the party but Joker protected them with the Song of Harmony. The King Frost told his minions to attack again but the group beat him to the punch. Queen, Noir and Fox summoned their respective Personas to retaliate, throwing them back. Takuto helped them by having Adam Kadmon use his Mafreila, giving them more power.
The Ananta charged to use Abysmal Surge but Mona thought fast, throwing it off kilter with a tornado. Takuto, who had hardly even noticed the staff on his back earlier, decided to make use of it so he attacked the shadow at once, with Mona finishing it off. The King Frost attacked with Megaton Raid once more but this worked against him when Panther decided to milk the opportunity, blasting him with Hecate's Agidyne while he was in mid-air. This made splutter as he fell down but while the other Shadows targeted her, they were fended off by Joker, Noir and Skull.
The ex-athlete had Seiten Taisei slam a few of the enemies while Noir blasted one with her grenade launcher. Joker was about to have Arsene use his curse magic but the gentleman thief surprised her by taking her dagger and surrounded it in an red and black orb of power. Arsene proceeded to hurl it then and the dagger flew, striking a few of the enemies repeatedly before returning to her.
''Joker, that was great!'' Mona cheered, amazed by the new skill.
Joker began to smile, pleasantly surprised to discover another of her Persona's powers. Taking advantage of the chaos Arsene had caused among the enemy ranks, she quickly moved into to take out two of them. Skull moved past the Ananta's Elec Wall skill with ease, slamming it with his club twice, finishing it off.
The King Frost wa about to order his remaining minions to get up but froze when he saw Queen, Noir and Fox having their guns aimed at him. ''You think you've won? Not a chance!''
He slammed his scepter on the ground, creating a number of thorny vines that pushed the three thieves back. Before they quite knew, the vines surrounded the area also started attacking them once more. This forced the group on the defensive, leaving them more vulnerable. Laughing, the enemy leader began attacking them as well. They were forced back on the defensive, Joker unable to muster an adequate shield with the Song of Harmony as it still took its toll on her.
''We can't get rid of those things, right? Now what?'' Skull asked the group at large.
Oracle stopped to think ''They do grow back quickly...but we can work with that. Gimme a sec!''
She swiftly summoned Necronomicon, releasing a number of bombs around them. Seeing the resulting explosions damage the vines gave Takuto an idea, he covered a few with Adam Kadmon's nuclear magic, amplifying their power.
Oracle was impressed ''I didn't think of that. Nice one, Doc!''
Joker blinded the enemy leader with a curse spell to his face, allowing her the chance to use the new skill to keep attacking. The dagger soared, slashing their enemies a few times before she caught it. Takuto used Adam Kamdon's charge to gather power while Mona cut one of the remaining Decarabias down. Noir blasted the remaining two Anantas with Milady's Mapsio and Queen finished the off. Takuto proceeded to cast another Megidola, with this one being twice as strong thanks to Charge, it was the blow that served to end the battle.
S. Hakuba slumped as he turned back to normal ''After all that...I failed...?''
The group surrounded him, Mona crossing his arms as he spoke ''All right, spill it! Just what were you talking about earlier? Who else is on these plans you mentioned?''
Despite his downtrodden state, the Shadow scoffed ''I'd be out of my mind to tell you. It's not worth throwing myself under the bus.''
Frowning in confusion, Mona looked up at Takuto as he offered an exaplanation ''He means giving away details could put his life in danger.''
''Exactly. I knew I said too much before...'' The Shadow lamented. ''...I was so desperate to become one of the elites. I thought I had a chance when that man noticed me, he told me I'd get what I want by supporting him so I did all he wanted over the last two years.''
''Which brings us to another point...'' Oracle pursed her lips. ''...do you know about Isshiki Wakaba? What you said back there was awfully suspicious...Was she one of the people you and your group took down?''
''...Yeah, she was. That was before my time but I heard some talk about it. That man was intrigued by her work; he wanted to learn more about it. He decided it can be useful so he approached her to help him but she refused. I thought it was ridiculous. No one refused him, he's just that powerful. I heard she was targeted later but...''
''They made it look like a suicide. Of course she wouldn't help you creeps.'' The navigator had expected nothing less of her mother. ''Yeah, we know plenty about that. Is that black masked criminal one of you?''
He spluttered ''You know about that guy? I wouldn't have thought you'd survive an encounter with someone like him...''
Panther's brow furrowed ''What do you mean by that?''
''He's something like a hired gun from what I've heard-I've never actually seen him. All I know is hearsay. I heard he only listens to that man but he does take orders from others if there's some good in it for himself.''
Takuto's lips thinned ''So why did you do it? Why'd you steal mine and Dr. Isshiki's work and what did you do with it?''
''Hell if I know. That man showed me a few things but that was it.'' S. Hakuba stated.
Noir steeled herself ''...Is Okumura Kunikazu involved with the people you mentioned?''
''Noir...?'' Mona started. Where did that come from?
S. Hakuba seemed genuinely curious ''Oh, you knew? I always thought that guy was just too reckless. Some of the more powerful members complained about him getting ideas too big for his station. He has himself convinced that he can keep going to the top no matter and they don't like it. Trouble's awaiting him if he keeps going like this.''
Noir was really beginning to worry about her father. If those people worked with the man behind the Mental Shutdowns, what would they do to him if they decided enough was enough? She may be upset with him but she didn't want anything bad to happen to her father either.
''You are aware that you were used, correct?'' Fox wanted to know. ''If that man really did trust you to help then why only show you so little?''
The Shadow gave a bitter laugh ''Yeah...talk about delusions of grandeur. I never stood a chance, did I? I'm hardly any different from Okumura, I just got carried away in it all. They played me like a harp because of the status I had from the family and look where it ends...''
Skull crossed his arms ''Yeah, you're just the same as them. You're all a bunch of scumbags, but we're gonna stop you.''
''You'd actually fight them?''
''Of course.'' Queen returned. ''We've had enough; we're the only ones who can do something about this. It doesn't matter if it's difficult, fighting for what's right is worth it.''
The statement touched something within both the Shadow and Takuto, who appeared pensive ''No wonder I lost to you kids, I feel so empty...so hollow...it really was all for nothing.''
With that said he faded into light and returned to his real world self.
On their way back, they stopped at a rest area to talk. The thieves also needed to decide what to do about Takuto...
Queen crossed her arms ''Well, you have what you wanted, Maruki-san. What do you plan to do now?''
''I've been thinking about that. Not only did I get some closure, I actually wound up with far more than I could've ever expected. This world is even greater than I imagined. Before I answer though, I'd like to clarify something. Joker, what did you mean by the changes of heart being a cruel mercy?''
While she hadn't expected the question, the girl saw no reason not to answer ''Exactly what you heard. It's true that we're helping people and I'll always be proud of that but at the same time, we're taking the freedom of choice from others and imposing a solution on them. Considering the alternative is so much worse, I've come to accept that but it doesn't mean I don't wish things could be different. We're fighting to give people hope, to make them realize the kind of strength we've come to achieve by standing up even when it was hard. To me, that makes all we do worthwhile. Because without freedom, life is just a shadow of its full potential. Despite my reservations, I refuse to sit back and do nothing as people shackle others and make them suffer, that's no different than helping the oppressors.''
The team looked on with growing contentment and pride, this was just another reason why Joker was the only one they'd ever accept as leader. Despite her reservations, she'd soildered on and helped them do the same. Her conviction kept them from straying down the wrong path and even helped them grow together.
Respect was clear in Takuto's gaze ''...That's a fine resolve. I can't simply act like nothing happened-this day truly changed me. The thought that my research may have helped people like Hakuba and the criminal causing the Mental Shutdowns makes me sick. I like what Noir said about putting your powers to good use. Watching you all inspired me, even with all the odds against you, you fight for what's right. That's why I wanted to ask if you'd allow me to join your team.''
Eyes traveled to one another, some beginning to smile. Truth be told, they had some hesitation for adults had hurt them quite a bit. But they hadn't forgotten that there was the good adults too, like Sojiro as well as Joker's grandparents and even Skull's mother for instance. They were unfortunate to run across the unreasonable ones but that didn't mean they should ignore the truth. Takuto had really proven himself today, not only had he heard them out and truly sympathized. He'd even ripped his mask off to take a stand just like them.
Eventually, the team looked at Joker and Queen, the leader and second in command respectively, to see what they thought. Both girls shared glances and nodded, their answer ready.
''...Well, after hearing that, how can we refuse?'' Joker began ''Welcome to the Phantom Thieves.''
His expression relieved ''Thank you.''
''Although...you're going to find out anyway so it's fair to show you.''
Dark eyes widened as she lifted her mask, they'd made sure to keep him far away for his own safety in the earlier battles so he couldn't ever be sure why they seemed familiar. Yet now... ''Hyakuya-san?!'' The others soon began to follow suit ''Takamaki-san and...'' He shook his head in amazement. ''...to think
''Sorry about before, we couldn't be sure how to handle things today.'' Panther offered.
''Not at all, Takamaki-san. I understand. I'm just...well, honestly blown away; I never thought...well, your words earlier take a new meaning now. Your stance about this is even more admirable now that I know...I see I have a lot to catch up on.''
''Oh, you have no idea.'' Mona returned. ''But for now, how about we give you certain details?''
TUpon learing of Noir's predicament, an appalled Takuto was just as quick to offer his aid as the team had been. ''That's terrible-well, I may be new to this but I'll be happy to help how I can.''
The girl gave a small smile ''Thank you.''
''We didn't have anything against you in particular but you can see how much damage careless adults caused to their lives.'' Mona stated. ''That's partly why having you around complicated things. Don't ever mess things up for the team.''
''I understand.'' And he really did. He already knew some of the group's stories after all so he was well aware of the chance they were giving him now. Takuto wasn't sure he would've been open to adults if it had been him in their shoes so he really appreciated this. ''I'll make sure you won't regret this.''
Well, let's stop here.
What do you think? To be honest, I've had the basics of this idea ever since I started learning about Takuto back when Royal first came out. I wasn't sure about using it but I figured it would be fun to try a different angle to the awakening. I figured that given his personality he'd really want to help them. I thought it might be interesting to have an adult working with them, especially one with his background and I could try some different stuff out with him there. I know his Persona affected him even when it hadn't really awakened in canon. That's somewhat similar to what's going on here, he could feel Adam Kadmon but he was unconsciously holding him back for some time. The day's events made him face his troubles head on so there we go.
I'm using Adam Kadmon as the initial Persona because from my understanding Azazoth is a more of a degenerated form. Besides, it sounds like that wouldn't have even taken place if things turn out as messed up as they were for him in canon. Remember, he's still with Rumi here for one thing. Since the awakening is different here, I'm going with different Soul Armor. I'll explain more about that next chapter though. Oh and before I forget, Adam Kadmon is and Almighty type Persona who generally excels in magic but has good support skills and a few physical ones. He's weak to Curse and Gun skills but he also resists Fire and Psy abilities. You'll see more of him next chapter.
I never really got why Shido left him alone if he knew about his research too so I decided to work with this. I thought I could try foreshadowing the Anti-Social Force (I heard that's what they call the Organization in P5S) a little. Hakuba's more of an outlier who Shido approached because of his family's money, which is why he only knows a little about the research.
Well, thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed it. Till next time!
