Defender31415: Nope, I stuck a little too much to canon because I was worried about spoilers but I have plans for Crow.

Gotham317: Thanks, truth be told the bit with Sae and Ohya came to me when I was planning the chapter and I liked it too much not to use then and there.

Vangran: Thank you! I admit, I might have messed up with Crow, I could've handled things differently but I really didn't think a bunchof things through when this started, this story was just a way for me to alleviate boredom. I didn't think I'd enjoy it this much. I've gotten better at planning things out and I have more in store for him.

The announcement of a gaming tournament in the arcade was a pleasant surprise to both Yuuki and Futaba. Naturally eager to go, the latter was admittedly hesitant because of the crowds there thus she requested her friends' help. Thus she was joined by Namine, Morgana, Shiho and Makoto.

"O-oh...'' Futaba looked unnerved. ''...there's even more people than I expected...''

"You'll be fine, consider it another part of your training.'' Makoto said bracingly.

"I bet it'll be just like last time, you forgot the people were even there when you got into the games, right?'' Yuuki offered, leaving the girl a bit relieved by the reminder. ''I have to admit, I'm surprised you're interested in the tournament, Senpai.''

Makoto refrained from reminding him to drop the honorific this time ''I'm curious. Besides, I didn't have much to do and it's a good change of pace...'' Truth be told, she was inspired by Namine's new moves and wondered if she could pick anything up now herself.

The girl's eyes widened a bit as the chatter rose around them ''...what's going on?''

Namine spotted the source of the commotion ''It's him again.''

"Oh!'' At the sight of the King arriving, Futaba wondered if this was why the tournament attracted so much attention.

Shiho tapped her back ''Come on, you have to get ready. They're calling all the participants.''

"Ah! Better make like a frog and hop on!''

Futaba and Yuuki held up quite well, nearly to the finals but the latter lost to a more experienced gamer while Futaba was beaten by the King himself. The girl couldn't help scowling a little at the boy's comment that he expected more from the infamous Alibaba. He was just lucky this sort of game wasn't her specialty, she'd trounce him otherwise!

Namine patted the girl's back as she said as much to them ''We know, we know-but you can actually count this as a win, Futaba.'' A quizzical look entered her mauve eyes. ''You didn't even think you could play in the tournament but here you are. One step forward, right?''

"Yeah, you totally pulled it off!'' Yuuki reminded.

Perking up, the girl nodded. It hadn't seemed so at first but Namine was right. She had played and played without the crowds getting to her one bit!

"You couldn't even go through the shopping mall before, remember? Look at you now!'' Shiho beamed.

Makoto nodded ''I'm sure Boss will be happy to hear about this.''

Futaba let out a bashful laugh, although Morgana couldn't help noticing the King looking at them. His expression was hard to read but the feline could've sworn he was annoyed...

Shiho clapped her hands together ''It's almost lunch time. Anyone up for monjayaki?''

"Oh, that sounds good!'' Yuuki smiled. ''I haven't had it in forever...''

"I don't see a problem here...'' Hearing no complaints, Makoto began leading them out.

Namine was about to follow suit when a voice called out to her, it was the King.

"I thought it was you.'' He acknowledged. ''...You're all going to leave just like that? Even if your friends lost, you're happy?''

The girl hadn't expected that. ''Yeah, I mean I guess they wouldn't just brush it off but they're doing okay. This whole thing's a bit more personal for Futaba...anyway, you saw them, right? They don't have a problem.''

"I guess people like that wouldn't get it...''

"What do you mean?''

"I've always liked games and I do my best to win. Shooting games are my specialty, I absolutely refuse to lose in Gun About. People who wouldn't take it seriously wouldn't get it, no wonder they lost.'' He elaborated.

Morgana held back a snort ''A little precocious, isn't he?''

"Is that fun for you?'' The question startled the boy, Namine titled her head curiously. ''I don't know, something about the way you're talking...you looked so bored the whole time back there. You said you like games but it doesn't seem like you're having any fun.''

It took him a few moments to find his voice ''W-what do you know? It's none of your business!''

"True...'' Namine took note of her friends about to leave. ''...I have to go but...tell you what, can you show me? Hearing what you were saying now-I want to see you playing seriously, what's the famous King like with his favorite game? Don't even bring up the tournament because we both know you were hardly trying for most of it.''

"...That obvious, huh?'' He huffed. ''Why should I anyway?''

"I thought it might be interesting to see what a serious gamer is like. Besides, you look so bored, I figure we both get something out of it.''

The boy snorted, his lips twitching ''...You're weird. But...yeah, guess it is getting kinda dull around here. Sure, I'll try when you turn up next time. Don't complain when I wipe the floor with you.''

"Hehe, it's a deal.''

I am thou, thou art

Thou hast acquired a new vow

It shall become the wings of rebellion

That breaketh thy chains of captivity

With the birth of the Tower Arcana

I have obtained the winds of blessing that shall lead to freedom and a new power...

Arriving at their destination, Namine happened to a spot a familiar figure grumbling as she tried to make her monjayaki.

"Gah, why can't I get this right...?''

"Ohya-san?''

The reporter started and turned ''Kid, brilliant timing! You gotta help me, this is driving me nuts!''

"Ah, I'm sure it's not so bad...'' Namine joined her as the others looked on in confusion and in Yuuki's case, wariness. ''...I didn't think I'd ever see you trying to make monjayaki though...''

"Good, that makes two of us. Lala flat out said she'd kick me out if I don't start taking better care of myself or whatever, and she just won't let up!''

"What does you being here have to do with that?'' Makoto clarified.

But Namine had a good guess ''Lala-san probably got sick of her unhealthy habits and figured being banned from Crossroads might light a fire under her, right?'' Ohya nodded grumpily.

Shiho could only look on in confusion ''Mishima-kun, do you know who that is?''

"She's a journalist who's been writing about the Phantom Thieves' endeavors.'' He returned just as quietly. The boy did not want to think about the day he met her. ''She talked to us about the way Shujin was and I heard Sakamoto say something about her digging for news on Madarame. It's probably hard to believe but she's actually really good at her job.''

It really was. Ohya seemed to be quite the drunk. Her current lamenting of this Lala's cruelty and being cut off from her usual buzz only reinforced the impression.

Namine patiently instructed the reporter, making a monjayaki which she prompted her to eat. She perked up ''...Oh, sweet mama, that's good!''

The girl smiled ''I get that what you're doing is really important but Lala-san's right, you should try to take better care of yourself. You'll just burn out at this rate.''

"Fat chance, you know why I won't let that happen.''

"Well, you can't keep fighting on an empty stomach.'' The girl was fully aware of her determination to find the truth about her friend Kayo at all costs. But look at what happened to Kawakami when she worked too hard. ''Besides, you're having lunch, relax!''

"I told you before, it's not that easy.''

"And I told you, it wouldn't kill you to try.''

Is your work really that demanding, Ohya-san? I heard Namine's been helping you for material but...'' Makoto trailed off.

"My boss is a piece of shit.'' She returned bluntly. ''Anytime I'm away from the office might as well be a blessing. But hey, that's enough about me. I need a change of subject. What's going on with you, kid?''

At Fujitaka's store...

Namine turned as her phone beeped with a message, finding one from Yuuki.

MY: I forgot to ask, did you talk to Makoto-senpai about what I told you this morning?

This just reminded her of her growing suspicions around Makoto. It was nothing bad-she most definitely trusted the girl. Ever since that day at the graveyard, she couldn't shake the feelings that Makoto was hiding something-something important enough that it was eating away at her. She'd hoped that the girl could trust them to come forward but...

They had met Yuuki near Leblanc hours ago. Futaba generously offered the admin help with the Phan Site days ago. It had come as quite a relief as he was slowly becoming overwhelmed. But that was how he found a couple of requests recently, one of the senders being Izou, asking to change Sae's heart. Izou made a point of apologizing to Makoto (although he didn't give a name, only a mention of someone he'd harrassed lately) and the Phantom thieves, thanking them for the help. He even admitted that he had gone too far, wondering if they could help Sae like they helped him.

The more he thought about it, the more it looked like they should target Sae. What happened in August was bad enough, the feline had yet to forgive that. He'd been meaning to bring it up but things sort of snowballed. Especially with finding Flora and then that awful trap from their last visit, besides Morgana kept thinking back to how Yusuke and Haru felt about faving their own parental figures. He didn't want to put Makoto in that situation but still...

HN: It's not easy. No one wants to believe their family is corrupt, I couldn't just say it.

MY: Yeah...I'll bet that's rough. I'm not saying you have to target her but after seeing Okuda-san's message...

HN: Mm, I think he might be right too. It's just that she's the only family Makoto has and from her stories they were close...which is why I'm wondering how much she really knows about this.

Honestly, Morgana wouldn't be all that surprised if she did know something, or at least had an idea about what was going on with her sister.

MY: Oh, you think...then again, she lives with her and Senpai's super smart, she probably DID notice something.

MY: Ah, dad's calling! Sorry, Namine-san, I have to go.

HN: Yeah, I'm off too, bye.

MY: Bye!

Namine checked the boxes she had just finished sorting, ensuring that it was all on the list Fujitaka left her. She found Asuka rolling her eyes as a customer left. ''...Asuka-san? Everything okay?''

"Oh, hey! Yeah, just...hah, people like that are just annoying...'' Shaking her head, Asuka added. ''...the creep starts flirting with me and then gets all pompous about buying a guitar-you can just tell he was angling to show off. I bet it'll just sit like an art piece collecting dust. I mean, it's good that we still bring business to the store but still...''

"You want them to actually appreciate the instruments, huh?''

"I knew you'd get it!'' The former leaned back. ''Keiko would've probably called him a pretentious load of hot air and she'd be right...'' Picking up on Namine's befuddlement, she added. ''...she was my best friend. We might have mentioned her, she died from an illness. I started learning about music because of my mom and to spend time with Uncle Fuji but she's the one who really got me into it.''

"She must've been a great musician.'' Namine concluded.

Asuka snorted, to their surprise ''Yeah, you'd think-actually, she was the worst I've ever heard. I used to dread the days she'd get her hands on an instrument-it was like nails on a chalkboard.''

"I thought you said you guys wanted to go far and she helped you out...''

"She did, she definitely did.'' was the immediate response. ''See, the thing about Keiko? She was passionate beyond anything I've ever seen. We thought she'd give up more than once but she wanted to learn and boy did she blow everyone out of the water. It's like she just shone with energy, watching her grow made me want to improve and we promised we'd work to be the best and get our music out there.'' Her smile grew sad. ''I already made up my mind. She can't do it anymore but I'll take over for her-it's the least I can do.''

"That's a great goal.''

Asuka returned Namine's smile with one of her own ''I think you two would've been fast friends-your drive is so strong just like hers.''

The other girl blinked ''Wait, are you kidding? I'm still figuring a lot of stuff out...''

" But that's my point-even after life knocked you down you're still getting back up and swinging again. Persevering in what you want to do, pressing forward no matter what-that's an example of passion. But I think keeping up the fight, facing all the obstacles in your way, that's also passion. It must've been hard after having to come here but look at you now! Those idiots back in your old home sure as hell don't deserve you and I'll take it to anyone who says otherwise.''

Namine couldn't help laughing ''Let's not take it that far...but thanks, I'm glad I'm here now and that's what matters.''

"You said it!''

Later that night, in the attic...

Heeh, so your grandparents are coming the day after tomorrow?'' Morgana looked pleased as he joined Namine on the bed. ''I've been looking forward to meeting them.''

The girl's eyes were bright, quite pleased herself. She knew it had only been a few months but it really felt like forever since she'd seen them in person. As the two got ready to go to bed, Namine decided to ask something that had been bothering her for a while.

"So, everything okay? You seemed kind of down when you were talking to Futaba when I came to pick you guys up...'' Namine didn't even blink when he tried to brush it off. ''...Mona, haven't we been through this?''

Indeed they had. Sighing, he lay down ''Sorry, force of habit...''

'You would do well to learn from the past. If you don't share the truth now, then when?' Mercurius prompted.

"Right...'' Morgana looked up at Namine. ''...Futaba was trying to figure out if she can come up with any plans that can help go further in Mementos. And it wound up with us deliberating over all what's happened lately-which lead to that awful doppelganger of mine.''

"Oh...'' Despite him not saying it, they all knew this remained a sore subject for him.

"...It's stupid...'' He mumbled.

"Don't say that, your feelings are never stupid.'' She countered. ''...This is about what he said-about knowing your past.''

"Yeah...what if I really am as weak as he says? Let's face it, I probably would've screwed if you and Ryuji hadn't come when you did. I talked big a lot but...I know things would've been different I was as strong as I pretended.''

"You are strong, Mona. You're getting stronger too-the old you never would've said anything like this.'' He looked up at Namine. ''Besides, Personas evolve when the user's heart is strong enough, don't they? Well, look at Mercurius. If he's not a mark of your own growing strength I don't know what is.'' She leaned against the wall. ''You say we helped you out, well it goes both ways. I can just imagine how bad it would've been without you. I'm glad you're here...you know, I don't think I slept more than three hours at first in the attic.''

Morgana blinked, not expecting that. The girl carried on ''Not because it was uncomfortable or anything but...honestly, I just felt so alone. The arrest was one of the scariest things I've ever dealt with but it doesn't compare to what happened next, everyone just abandoning me, everything I thought I knew being flipped about in a heartbeat. I thought coming here could be at least a little different but...in a way it was like I never even left jail.''

The cat had no idea she felt like that but he could commiserate, it had to be truly awful.

"But I was wrong too-Grandma and Grandpa were always there-even if not in person. That's why I told them not to abandon the trip, they wanted it so much I couldn't just live with myself if that was ruined. But it's also why I'm so grateful to you guys, to Boss and Yoshida-san and the others...you helped me far more than I can put in words and more than I can repay.''

Morgana was touched by the heartfelt words but he also felt the need to put in his piece ''Okay, hold up, first of all, there's no debt between friends. Second, none of this would've happened if you hadn't been brave enough to reach out to everyone and kind enough to support us. So none of that-I may have been the one who founded the team but you're the heart who helps us all keep going. I didn't know what I was getting into when all this started but I couldn't have asked for a better friend.''

Namine smiled warmly, hugging the cat, who did his best to return the gesture ''Back at you. Thanks, Mona.''

The next day...

"I really am sorry I couldn't be there.''

"And I told you, it's fine, Sensei. You were busy-we get it.''

Hearing of the trap, Takuto's reaction had been exactly what they expected, fretting over them all and only calming once he could be sure they were all right.

Appreciate the concern but seriously take it easy.'' Morgana deadpanned as they entered his office.

"Still...'' Takuto bit his lip. ''...I know we talked about this before everything went down but I do feel bad...you don't have to do this now if you don't want to.''

Namine couldn't help smiling, it was nice that he cared so much. But they cared about him too so...''It's fine, it's fine. Of course we'd want to talk you. Besides, don't go feeling bad-your research is important to you, why wouldn't we want to help?''

"Well, let's just relax now. Today's going be a good day! Please take a look at what's on this table!''

Namine blinked twice and followed his line of sight, surprised to see the food and drinks present there. Morgana let out a sound of pleasant surprise, perking up as Takuto opened up a packet for him and eagerly digging in.

"I found these cookies in an underground mall! They're kind of fancy cookies too. I thought I'd get a surprise for you since you've been kind enough to indulge me. Go ahead, enjoy!''

"Thanks, this looks great!''

He smiled ''Go on, don't be shy."

They chatted about a few subjects for a while before Takuto carried on ''When I look at those cookies...I'm reminded of this psychological experiment. The scientists prepared two containers and put the same kind of cookies in both of them. In one container, there was only one cookie but they put ten cookies in the other one. So then they had their subjects try cookies from each container and asked how the tastes compared.''

"I don't get it-they're the same type...'' Morgana trailed off.

"That was my exact reaction back when I first heard of the test. Now care to take a guess? Which container was marked better?''

Namine thought that over ''...I'd have to say the one cookie container. When there's only one, you'd probably think it's better than the full container.''

Takuto looked pleased ''Exactly. That's called the law of scarcity. It's honestly not something I'd noticed until hearing about this experiment but it did make a lot of sense-I found myself following this law too.''

"I see what you're getting at.'' Morgana nodded.

"You can see this law in action just by observing how excited people get over limited edition merchandise. Strange prospect, but really intriguing. In becoming aware of scarcity, we trigger our own desires and cause a change in our cognition. The effect spreads to our senses and creates a subject, observable difference in our reality. Basically, your perception can be changed by your cognition or perception.'' He smiled. ''It's all below the conscious level, but really incredible!''

"Hehe, yeah...''

"Incidentally, now that you've heard the story...how do you feel about the idea? That your unconscious desires may have changed the cookie's taste?''

"...When you put it like that, it's a little frightening...'' Morgana mused.

Takuto nodded ''Something about it is beautiful to me, I think it's how this shows the potential of the human heart. Even a small preconception can greatly influence someone, . For example take that story I told you. What if you'd eaten that one cookie and it had been the best cookie of your life? Say I never revealed the trick behind it. That cookie would have remained more delicious than usual. It would have been a subjective truth of your reality.'' Namine nodded in understanding. ''I actually came to my own conclusions about this after reading some of Dr. Isshiki's work. It's a shame she never got to finish-I would've loved to know what kind of vision she had.''

"Yeah, me too. Especially after hearing Futaba talk about it...'' Morgana mused. ''...and I really think it's interesting. You learned of the Metaverse because of your potential as a Persona User. How much did she know and how did she even hear of the Metaverse in the first place?''

"That's a good point...according to Futaba-chan, she was going to explain once she finished her research but...'' Takuto looked pensive.

" Oh yikes!'' He said suddenly, to the cat's surprise. ''I'm so sorry! The whole point was that we could just chat. But we wound up getting into an academic conversation after all...''

Namine giggled ''I wondered when you'd notice. It looked like you were so into it anyway...''

"Ahaha...I really should watch myself...'' He smiled as Morgana snickered.

"Well, it's fine. You're pretty passionate about this stuff-just shows how much you care.''

"Ah, you think so? I truly am grateful for everything you've done. Not just because I can get your opinions on these things, either. I can see what Yusuke-kun and the others meant about you-you really do have a soothing presence.'' The girl beamed. ''Talking to you is like talking to an old friend...and I especially appreciate it, knowing how new I was to the team but you helped me so much...''

"It goes both ways, Takuto-sensei.''

Morgana nodded ''We had our doubts about having an adult there but you definitely blew all our expectations to pieces. Not that I'm complaining-it's just most of the adults we deal with are...''

"Yes, I understand. You've certainly dealt with your fair share of the terrible ones.'' Takuto returned. ''Well, like I said-I may not be the most reliable but I will do my best to support you.''

Morgana cringed ''What is that smell?!'' Covering his nose, he tried to look for the source, noticing a few policeman outside an apartment. Then, to his surprise, there was Akechi watching the scene with a growing frown.

Namine couldn't help but wonder what was going on ''Akechi-kun?''

Surprised, the teen gave a small smile ''Ah, hello-I'd say it's good to see you but now...''

She didn't miss him looking back the building ''What's going on?''

"I was called here for a murder investigation. A man was found dead this morning.''

"Hold on, weren't you supposed to be investigating the Phantom Thieves? I know the thing with Kawanabe-san was because you managed to find enough evidence but...''

"That's just it. The officer behind the investigation thinks they were involved.'' The girl looked taken aback. ''I'm having trouble believing it too-he doesn't seem to have much evidence besides the prison incident but that's not enough...''

Morgana held back a growl. Was the police determined to blame them for every little thing now?

"...besides, whatever the people think of the Phantom Thieves now, I think this is going too far.''

Namine recoiled when she saw what the boy was getting at, as nearly the entire apartment's entrance was drenched in blood. Morgana's ears fell as he hid in the bag. He didn't want to think of what the police found in there, no wonder it smelled so awful.

Akechi's expression said that he commiserated ''They wouldn't let me go in but I'm relieved. Their reactions just confirm that this is quite grisly. The officer in charge won't listen to me but I know a way around that...''

It turned out that his plan to enlist help-and quite the effective one at that...

"Jeez...'' Miura grumbled as he joined the three. ''...sorry about this, Goro. The idiot had no right calling you like that. I swear he was just promoted out of nepotism...''

"It's all right, did you figure something out?''

"Yeah, actually-you gave him all the clues but he just tuned you out. The secruity cameras told us a lot. I sent someone to grab the suspect-shouldn't be long now.''

It turned out the suspect was a woman who had been seen here last night, having apparently come for a visit. There had been some confrontation of sorts before she'd left-but she'd been gone in a hurry, clearly having no knowledge of the camera recordings.

Looking up her records pointed her as the victim's ex-girlfriend who had just discovered that she was being cheated on and so came to confront him. She was trying to defend herself but the evidence was piling up against her-and they knew she had reasons to resent the victim. They had been childhood friends who had gone their seperate ways after a bad fight only to reconcile years later. The woman had truly been trying to move on but then...

"That's about all I know for sure.'' Miura finished. ''It's not my investigation so my hands are tied unless that idiot messes up again. At least this time, he seems to have a handle on things and the pieces are coming together. It sounds like a confrontation that was a long way coming. He hurt her more than once but this was her limit...''

I can understand that. Knowing someone who hurt you so "badly must be living well like it was no skin off his back must surely be vexing.''

Miura scoffed ''Don't go giving her too much credit, that's what she wants. Murder isn't something to be taken lightly.''

The teens had to agree but Akechi wasn't finished ''Looking at her just has me wondering again if wounds can be healed. She flat out said getting the police wouldn't have worked...how many others feel that way?''

"...Well, a lot probably would, they'd find it better to take action by themselves. I'll give you that. And as much as I hate it, the temptation to take revenge can be strong.'' Akechi nodded and the former looked back at Namine. ''What do you think?''

"You're right...but it's...at the of the day, it's really pointless, isn't it? I don't think revenge really does any good. It's natural to hate someone who hurt you but holding on to that only winds up badly...letting go is hard but it's better in the long run. I know it's not nearly so simple but it's worth a try. People make it sound like the end to all answers but...what's next? Can this just be something they'd live with?''

"So you'd say this even if you know who the man from that night was?''

"...What makes you think I don't?''

The response threw the pair for a loop taken aback but Namine only sighed ''I know who he is. But it won't change my mind. Revenge or not...there's no going back after what was said and done...'' Her expression tightened briefly as the memories came back. ''...they made that perfectly clear. You're the one who said my record isn't easy to get rid of, Akechi-kun. It won't make me feel better and it definitely won't erase the past.''

Akechi's expression flickered with something they couldn't make out while Miura was thoughtful ''Why didn't you say anything before? If you'd get in touch with the police...''

Namine shook her head ''My trial was basically a kangaroo court and he made it happen just like that. I don't see what difference they'd make. I've been looking up some laws and from what I understand it doesn't matter if I know who it is because the one whose words would actually make a difference is that woman. And I still have no idea who she is, let alone if she'd help me.''

"Point. I'd say he could've made her do it under duress but at the same time there's no telling for sure...'' He considered. ''...but I have to say, I'm impressed, Namine-chan. Old Man Tora told me you were wise beyond your years and I definitely see it now.''

She half-smiled ''Well, I've had a lot of time to think about it and help from a bunch of sources. He's not getting any say in how I live my life-I'm free to do what I choose and he can't change that.''

"You go, kiddo. That's a really good way to look at it.'' Miura smiled approvingly.

"Maybe so...'' They looked at Akechi. ''...I doubt I could do it. Just the idea after all this time, that he lives well after what he did sickens me.''

"...He?'' Namine tilted her head while Miura's eyes narrowed.

"You once asked me why I became a detective...I wasn't completely honest. At the time, my motivation was to find a certain man. I'd only heard mentions of him here and there so it was hard. I finally hit the mark here only to find that it most definitely wasn't worth it.'' His dark expression startled the three. ''I'd only heard of him so far but I was better off never finding the answers. Even after all he's done, he evaded all consequences. I'm not like you, Hyakuya-san, I despise him and loathe the thought of letting continue to evade justice. If there was anything I could do...letting him run free infuriates me.''

Namine didn't know why but something about those words was tugging at the back of her mind. Akin to a far off memory, she knew it was there but it was too elusive for her to catch. But that...didn't make any sense, did it?

Something was off with him...she didn't know how to describe it but...this felt inherently wrong.

What did this mean...?

Miura had heard most of this before, Akechi had still to change his mind over the issue but the man had one point to make ''The way you put it, that's not justice...''

"I'll say. Let him sugarcoat this all he wants, it just sounds like he's trying to advocate revenge.'' Morgana scoffed.

Akechi bristled ''What do you know?! Don't talk about things you don't understand. I'm not sugarcoating anything...'' Both Phantom Thieves froze. ''...he deserves to rot in jail!''

The boy seemed to catch himself then, muttering an apology before hurrying off. Miura sighed ''I swear somethings never change...''

"You know about this?'' Namine clarified.

"A little-he made his feelings on this pretty clear before. I couldn't ever get him to mention who this guy was but whatever he did hurt him a great deal.'' The man grimaced. ''I don't know if they even met but what Goro found was from pleasant. I wound up telling him to try getting to work as a distraction just so he wouldn't dwell on this stuff-I thought it helped at least a little. Dwelling in hate never does you any good-I wanted him to avoid that but I was no help...''

"Don't say that-I think you really did help. You actually care enough to try, Miura-san. That means plenty.''

He gave her a small smile of gratitude ''...Let's just give him time to cool off. Anyway, I've got to get back to work. See you around.'' Namine nodded, waving back. Her expression grew concerned once he faded out of view. In all his agitation, Akechi likely had no idea what he'd actually done...but...

Flora spoke after a moment '...Did the boy just...?'

'Interesting, very interesting...' Arsene trailed off.

Morgana's eyes were zoned in on the direction Akechi had taken. They really needed to keep a sharp eye on this boy-now more than ever.

Namine was invited to the sky tower by Chihaya. The blonde fortune teller being particularly eager to celebrate as things were really turning around with the Chairman's change of heart.

"I've been meaning to come for a while but things were so busy. I can't believe how different the ADP is without the chairman-it's like night and day.'' She enthused.

"So you're okay still working with them? I mean the guy did basically trick you into joining...'' Namine noted.

"Yes but I shouldn't blame them for that. Even if they are some who still had their faith in him, the majority understands how wrong they were. That's enough for now.''

"She looks so happy-good for her.'' Morgana smiled.

"You're right...'' Namine returned in response to both comments.

Chihaya peered at the view from the sky tower ''Ooh, what a beautiful sight. The skyscrapers are now under our feet...doesn't that give you a sense of superiority?''

Namine looked amused ''That's like what Futaba said...''

"Oh, that genius you told me about? So she had that reaction too...'' Chihaya was more interested in meeting the girl now. ''When I'm at street level, all the tall buildings make me feel like Tokyo is a prison. But when I look down from here, it's surprisingly huge. I forget how big it actually is...all the members are still trapped in their tiny world. That's why I need to help realize that there are more important things than destiny. Since I realized that, I have to do something.''

"Way to go!'' Namine smiled. ''And you used to say you're a terrible person-a terrible person wouldn't think this way.''

"Hehe, that's true.'' Chihaya beamed. ''Okay...it's amazing how much something like this can change your perspective. My problems seemed inescapable but here I am now-more free than I ever imagined I would be. We might still have a lot to work on but we made such progress. To think I could be here now...hehe, if you told me that three years ago, I might have laughed.''

The former's expression was equally bright ''I totally get you. Coming here has been rough but I learned so much, about the city, about life and about myself.''

"I couldn't have said it better myself, Namine-chan!'' The fortune teller leaned back against the rail. ''Well, that's enough about me now. Do you plans in the works?''

She thought that over. Well, she hadn't gotten around to telling any of her friends yet...so why not start now? ''Our school's festival is coming up and...I haven't worked out how the specifics yet but I plan to sing there.''

Morgana perked up ''Hey, all right!''

Chihaya clapped her hands together ''That's wonderful! I remember you mentioning how you were getting back to enjoying music again. I've been looking forward to hearing you perform-your school would allow outsiders, yes? I'd love to come!''

Namine laughed ''I think so, yeah. t'd be great to have you. Just maybe don't raise your hopes too much...''

"Oh, nonsense. I'm sure you'll do excellently! I'll be looking forward to this.'' She beamed. ''Now, I've never had the chance to come here so what can you tell me about this place?''

Later that night, Caroline approached Namine as she arrived in the Velvet Room...

Caroline blinked ''Oh, Inmate. Master hasn't called you so...need something?''

Namine nodded ''I can't wrap my head around something. I learned about the arcana from you guys and Chihaya-san and Igor mentioned my bonds with people revolving around them. I didn't get it before then but I think I'm starting to really feel it.'' She placed a hand on her heart. ''...I don't know how to explain it but it's been coming on and off for a while.''

The realization had hit home recently, her encounters with both Makoto and Akechi only reinforcing it. Whatever they were both dealing with was more than a little worrying and the feeling actually worsened with Akechi...

"It's like I connect with them on a deeper level or something and that's how I'm noticing this...'' The girl tried.

"You got the basic idea down but talk about oversimplifying it.'' Caroline deadpanned. Justine, seeing that her twin had the matter at hand, chose to leave her to it.

"Erm, sorry?''

Sighing, the former carried on ''Well, it does seem that you're connecting much better with your confidants. You've been overcoming some personal hurdles and it helped you open up more. Your bonds allow not only your personal growth but your confidants too.''

Namine nodded ''That's how it feels. I know I wouldn't be where I am today without them. That's why I want to do my best for all your sakes too.'' Caroline blinked ''You're talking like this doesn't include you. I might be still learning the ropes but I know I have that same bond with you, Justine and Igor.''

"Well, I'm talking about you humans growing up. Of course we wouldn't count there.''

The girl had to give her that. But...there was one other bond Caroline didn't account for...

She carried on before Namine could verbalize the thought ''But that wasn't all that was worrying you, right? I don't think you would've come now if it was.''

"Mm, this has been going on for a while but when I'm around one of my friends, it seems like I'm missing something...something important. And I can't help thinking that they know about it. I am getting to know people better but when it comes to him...''

"Ah, you think he's blocking you off.'' Caroline received a nod. ''Well, there's not much to be done about that. The problem's with him. Considering who we're talking about, he seems much more tied down by the past than you.''

Namine hadn't considered that but given what she heard earlier, Caroline may be on to something. The past wasn't something she liked to think about and it was only recently that she was coming to terms with everything. She wasn't over her own troubles with it so she could understand someone struggling over the matter. ''Well, I'm working on that myself but...I've made up my mind to live life freely. Even if I can't get rid of my record, I won't give that up.''

The young warden appeared satisfied ''Not bad, Inmate. Keep that resolve up and it might just see you through to the end.''

The following day...

It was almost lunchtime when Takemi was about to enter Leblanc. But then the door suddenly opened and Namine ran out, much to her surprise ''Namine...?'' But the girl was already out of earshot. ''...what was that about?''

"Oh, she has to go to the airport. She's meeting a pair of people very important to her.'' An amused Sojiro informed.

With that, the doctor recalled the girl mentioning something along similar line

s in passing the last time they spoke ''So they're here...''

The girl was joined by Haru and Ryuji, the heiress' driver taking them straight to the airport.

"Oh, hey-over there!''

Following Ryuji's line of sight, both girls noticed Yuri coming around the corner. She was soon joined by her husband, who happened to spot the three first. Suddenly, he left the suitcase he was lugging behind and the next thing they knew, he had Namine in a tight hug. The surprised girl started laughed even as they almost fell while he just grinned.

"Well, someone's excited to be here.'' Haru remarked to an equally amused Ryuji.

"Oh, you...'' Yuri came over, throwing her husband an exasperated look. Not that it lasted long when she saw Namine, who hugged her without missing a beat. ''...I don't care how many times we called, it just isn't enough.''

"That's for sure, but now you're both here.'' Her grandaughter returned, Yuri's smile was equally warm.

"That we are.''

The new arrivals had already made plans to prepare a new home not too far from Yongen Jaya with some help from a few friends. Sojiro was among this number, having closed Leblanc early so he could prepare the house. The rest of the Phantom Thieves opted to help him, joined by Shiho. Most had already spoken to the couple at one point and quickly liked them so this was a very welcome occasion.

Ann let out a breath, perking up as they finished organizing the last of the food and decorations ''I think that's everything.'' Sojiro confirmed, thanking them.

Shiho looked around them ''It's set with all three of them in mind but...Namine still has to stay in Leblanc.''

"Til her probation's over, yeah. It's really annoying considering we know what bullshit that whole case is!'' Futaba grumbled.

Sojiro gave her a glance ''I'd say something about watching your language but yeah, there's really no better way to put it.''

"Exactly!''

"Well, look at it this way, Namine-chan won't have to go back to that town.'' Takuto pointed out. ''The authorities wronged her but at least they see how it will do more harm than good.''

"Let's be glad for that.'' Shiho agreed.

"And even if it did, we'll do everything in our power to stop it, right?'' Ann added.

"As if you need to ask, Ann.'' Yusuke returned promptly.

The blonde smiled, the others' expressions giving the answer ''Yeah, figured as much...'' She blinked as the door knocked, hearing familiar voices from outside. ''...they're here!''

Itsuki was about to ask why Haru was knocking the door when it was opened, revealing the awaiting group. Yuri was as taken aback as her husband at the warm welcome, her face lighting up ''Oh, how thoughtful! You didn't have to...''

"Sure we did!'' Futaba chirped.

"You haven't seen anything yet, Yuri-san.'' Ann added brightly before proceeding to introduce them to Shiho and Takuto.

It wasn't long before they were all settled down, sharing stories as they ate. Most of the group was rather amused to see Itsuki letting Sojiro have it for hiding Futaba for so long, only for the exasperated barista to point out that they had this discussion several times. The former's insistence that it needed to be said only led to an argument that Yuri was forced to break up. Futaba stared at her father ''I don't remember the last time someone got under Sojiro's skin like that...''

Yuri was shaking her head, mumbling something about dealing with children ''For some reason, Itsuki just gets a kick out of pushing his buttons. It never gets old with those two.''

"Sounds like a pain.'' Ryuji commiserated, Morgana nodding to this.

"Oh no, you don't get to talk here.'' Futaba put in.

"Seriously. When was the last time you looked in a mirror?'' Ann huffed.

The talk shifted to stories about the couple's travels, focusing for a bit on Hawaii due to the class trip. Some of the thieves, especially Ryuji, were both disappointed and irked to learn that the Hyakuyas' to the island was much better than theirs.

"It figures the school would totally half-ass everything...'' The blond grumbled. After all, look how long it took anything to change even with their own local problems. And the whole reason the third years came was their slap dash effort to salvage some sort of procedure on the trip in the first place.

"You know, I've been wondering for a while, is Shujin really all that big of a deal? For an apparently elite school, it just sounds like the whole rep's nothing but hot air.'' Futaba remarked.

Ann snorted ''You're not going to hear any arguments here.''

"Well, it does have a good number of almnus to their name amd that bred a strong reputation. That's why Father decided to become a sponsor but I certainly understand where you're coming from...'' Haru trailed off. Makoto had to agree, their experiences did influence these opinions but at the same time, it wasn't as if they were wrong. The school didn't do much to show for this reputation.

"Speaking of-Namine, please tell me you're considering Haru's idea. Your performance can replace the stupid sharing special-it'd be perfect!'' Ryuji pleaded.

Yusuke quirked a brow ''I think you mentioned something along these lines before but what exactly is this Shujin sharing special? Is it as dreadful as you're making out to be?''

"Basically, the announcer chooses a random person in the crowd and asks them a whole bunch of questions. And of course if you don't answer, I'll bet you anything the school cooks up more rumors over it next. Either way, you just can't win.'' Ann offered.

"It was really awkward to watch last year...'' Shiho recalled.

Agreed. I still wonder who on earth came up with it.'' Makoto sighed.

"And with my brand of luck, I'm going to be the poor sucker picked to go this time!'' Ryuji added.

"So leader, are you going to tell them or should I?'' Morgana grinned.

Namine laughed a bit ''I wasn't sure when to bring it up but to spare Ryuji the extra anxiety, I'm up for singing at the festival.'' The listeners looked pleased. ''I don't know how to pull that off yet...''

"Just leave that to me. I have a plan.'' Makoto assured.

"Then we're golden!'' Ann smiled. ''This'll be fun!''

Haru nodded happily ''I'm so glad you're going for it, Nami-chan.''

"Oh, this is going to be good. It's later this week, right? We'll be there.'' Itsuki stated.

"Yup, we all will!'' Ryuji grinned.

"You look relieved.''

Startled, Yuri looked back at Takuto ''I imagine all of this must be a sight for sore eyes.''

She nodded ''More than you know. We really were worried, it's only because we were already out of the country and Nami-chan's insistance that we didn't come back earlier. She did it for us. So we tried to enjoy ourselves like she wanted-I'm so glad to see she's recovering from those awful experiences. She wasn't expecting to find any friends.'' Takuto looked surprised. ''She didn't say as much but I know her, all she did want was to avoid returning to that town again. Even that would've been enough, she certainly wasn't expecting to find anyone who cared about her here but look at them all now, you're all such good people. I can't thank you enough for being by her side.''

"She helped us all come together. I'm sure I don't need to say this but you have an amazing granddaughter-she's done her best by us all and I count myself fortunate to have met her. I know everyone else would agree. You don't need to worry, at the end of the day, we'd all have each other's backs.''

Her smile widened, both looking back at the others ''I don't doubt that.''

Later that night, the family were left to have dinner before Namine had to go back to Leblanc...

"Glad to see you so happy now, kiddo.'' Itsuki remarked.

"I really am.'' Namine beamed. ''I didn't think things could ever turn out so well I'm glad to be so wrong.''

"I know what you said before but...we really should've been there.''

"You were, Grandpa.'' Her response was immediate. She wouldn't let them think otherwise for a minute. ''I know I had you two in my corner all along and that means more than I can say. Besides, we're all here, that's what matters now.''

"Exactly.'' Yuri took both their hands with a loving smile. ''Those rough times are over, we'll keep moving forward. This will be our family's new beginning.''

Itsuki's grin was wide ''That sounds great.''

I am thou, thou art

Thou hast acquired a new vow

It shall become the wings of rebellion

That breaketh thy chains of captivity

With the birth of the Charity Arcana

I have obtained the winds of blessing that shall lead to freedom and a new power...

Well, let's stop here.

So what do you think? Originally I had a different plan for their arrival but I felt this one was better. Their bond is at rank 7 since even through all that happened, they remain close. You'll see more of their interactions with the other characters soon.

I remember reading a few stories where people try to incorportate the confidant bonds in the story, I'm doing it for a couple plot points which are important in this arc. It was really vague for Namine at first but the more she grows, the better she connects with others. So based on that, I decided to explain more here. Namine does know something's up with Makoto but she's hoping Makoto would tell them herself.

With Akechi, it's a bit more complicated, more on his part than hers. She's fully aware that he's hiding something but she doesn't know what to do about it yet. It's why the justice arcana hasn't advanced in a while, he's still keeping her at a distance. Namine does have her own issues with the past that she has yet to figure out so she gets where he's coming from. But she's made up her mind to move past them. Freedom is very important to her, she wants live freely and dwelling on all what happened to her would do the opposite.

Akechi might have noticed that he wound up responding to Morgana if he wasn't so angry at the time. And this is before he finds out they were talking about the same person. Oh and remember that pancake comment back at the TV station? The team might have had more time to pick up on it but then all that mess with Makoto and the blackmail happened so it was the furthest thing on their minds. But they're definitely going to keep an extra sharp eye on him now.

Welp, thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed it. Til next time!
