Chapter 23: The Refined Technique.
—OoOoO—
Gojo Satoru had indeed left the scene and handed that disaster-level cursed spirit over to Hachiman. However, he didn't do it because he was afraid. Seriously. It couldn't be that Gojo Satoru was frightened, could it? There was a particular reason why he did it. And it was something he had hidden in this place.
Gojo Satoru walked down the stairs that led to the basement. And it was not just any place, but a secret place where only a few people knew and could visit.
Step by step, he took to descend the stairs. Slowly but surely, he started to hear unfamiliar voices reciting the lines written in the script. Without bothering about what he heard, Satoru finally arrived inside a room. The room has minimal lighting. There was only a dim lamp and a burning television as the light source.
The white-haired sorcerer immediately stepped closer to the sofa in front of the TV. On the couch sat a teenager whose entire attention was focused on the content displayed on the screen. With his mischievous nature, Satoru didn't want to announce his arrival and intended to see how the teenager would react when his concentration was suddenly interrupted.
"Yuji!" shouted Satoru to startle the teenager.
The boy called Yuuji flinched with a funny reaction. Feeling a little irritated because his training session—in the form of watching a movie—was disturbed, Yuuji immediately looked toward the source of the sound.
"Gojo-sensei!"
Itadori Yuuji, the Sukuna's vessel. He was an unlucky civilian who accidentally got involved with the world of jujutsu. Even though he had a raw physique that was far above average, he was still a child who was used to living in peace. He was not a person who was ready to die and did not want to be sacrificed. However, he was a person who had died once.
Satoru stared at Yuuji closely. Then, his gaze shifted downwards to see how the boy handled the special doll used for training.
'He learns quickly. Even though his concentration is disturbed, the flow of his cursed energy into the doll is still stable,' Satoru thought.
After his first death due to his heart being crushed by Sukuna, Itadori Yuuji was now alive again. It wasn't a gift or a miracle, but something that Sukuna planned. No one knew what kind of vow Yuuji and Sukuna made. After the boy lost the bet against Sukuna in his subconscious, almost all of Yuuji's memories regarding the vow instilled by Sukuna disappeared.
In other words, no one knew what kind of bomb Sukuna would drop. Thus, accelerating Yuuji's training was a must.
"Eh? You already here? What about your business, Gojo-sensei?" asked Yuuji.
Satoru didn't reply right away. He just flashed a mischievous smile with a lot of meaning.
"We're going outside."
Yuuji needed some clarification. He tilted his head, indicating he didn't understand his teacher's meaning.
"Why? You said I should practice with this thing, right?"
Expressing his confusion, he held up a black bear-like doll.
Practising Cursed Energy Control by holding a doll while watching movies sounded ridiculous. However, it was a very effective method. Because cursed energy was the energy that came from various kinds of human emotions, the emotional changes that were experienced would significantly affect the quality of the energy. On top of that, the doll he used was not just any doll, but a doll specifically designed to hit the holder if it was not well-charged with cursed energy.
Therefore, watching all kinds of movies that could evoke emotions while holding such a doll, this seemingly ridiculous training method was very effective.
"Well, let's say this is an extracurricular lesson," replied Satoru casually, "You've seen how sorcerers fight from Megumi and Kugisaki, right? Now, I will take you to look at a much higher level. The level that a special grade sorcerer is at."
Yuuji blinked a few times. He hoped he hadn't heard wrong.
"Special Grade? Are you going to act or something, sensei?"
Yuuji was new to this accursed world. However, he knew those who held the title of the special grade were sorcerers who possessed power far above other sorcerers. He didn't know the details, but he knew that only a handful of people were worthy of being called a special grade. And Yuuji was well aware that Gojo Satoru was one of them.
Meanwhile, Satoru, who heard his student's question, smiled again.
'Well, Hachiman hasn't officially become a special grade yet, though. However, after being humiliated by the cursed spirit that turned Haruno into a sorcerer, I can see the great fear in his eyes. And that fear drives him to rack his brains even amid his life as a Sobu student.'
Satoru smiled again, remembering the efforts the boy had made recently.
'Heh, that reminds me of the old days when he was innocent and so easy to prank.'
Yuuji, who saw his teacher's silence and smiled strangely, decided to call him back.
"Gojo-sensei?"
Satoru immediately snapped out of his reverie and answered Yuuji's question.
"No, it's not me. The one fighting is your senpai. And he was the first person to come up with the practice idea you are using now."
"Wow, really?" Yuuji replied excitedly before he realised something, "Wait, didn't you say I shouldn't see anyone for a while?"
Without heeding Yuuji's question, Satoru immediately grabbed the back collar of the boy's clothes. He was ready to take his disciple away using teleportation. However, before he could actually leave, Satoru said some final words.
"Change of plans. After all, Hachiman was a boy who could be trusted. Also, I will show you the pinnacle of jujutsu sorcery, the Domain Expansion."
—OoOoO—
'What the fuck?!'
Jogo—the name of the cursed spirit—thought in pain as he was hit in the back of his head. The punch was not merely reinforced with cursed energy but a punch accompanied by a black flash. Because of its effect, which could increase attack power up to rank 2.5, it was no doubt for Jogo that the pain he felt was not a joke.
Hachiman, who was flanking Jogo lying face-down on the asphalt, was about to launch a follow-up attack. However, Jogo didn't want to become a punching bag just like that. With a remarkable output, Jogo exploded an extraordinary heat wave. Not wanting to end up being grilled meat, Hachiman was forced to let go of Jogo and jump backwards.
Not wanting to waste this opportunity, Jogo swiftly stood up and took his distance from the young sorcerer.
'I'm sure he was still standing before me, but how could he suddenly attack me from behind? Was that his speed? No. I'm sure it was not about speed. It must be the effect of his cursed technique. Besides, what was with the attack just now? Was that a technique called black flash?'
Jogo stared intently at Hachiman while trying to dissect the secret behind the trick he used. On the other hand, Hachiman didn't want to give his opponent time to think. With full speed, he shot toward the cursed spirit. Jogo, who saw it, immediately put him on standby.
After their distance was cut drastically, Hachiman punched Jogo's face. However, the cursed spirit swiftly parried the blow to the side. Taking advantage of a slightly visible gap, Jogo counterattacked by hitting Hachiman in the stomach. Unfortunately, the boy was quicker than he thought.
Hachiman turned his body to the right, letting Jogo's punches only hit the air. Instead, the young man tried to elbow Jogo's head while taking advantage of the momentum of the spin he created. However, Jogo quickly slipped from Hachiman's left instead of dodging or parrying. Taking advantage of his relatively short stature, Jogo slightly bent his body to deliver a low blow to Hachiman.
The young sorcerer was slightly surprised, along with wide eyes. Armed with his honed reactions, Hachiman threw himself backwards, letting his back fall freely onto the asphalt. However, before hitting the ground, Hachiman immediately spun his body around to give Jogo a sidekick.
Unbeknownst to Hachiman, Jogo was much more agile and managed to catch his leg. Jogo smiled happily because he managed to get a windfall. Without wasting a chance, Jogo immediately pulled Hachiman's leg up, rotated him 180 degrees, and then slammed him to the ground.
Unfortunately, instead of creating a solid shock effect from the young sorcerer's impact with the asphalt, Hachiman's body scattered into blue birds flying in all directions.
'What? What is this?' thought Jogo, who got distracted.
Not wanting to let himself be distracted any longer, Jogo immediately focused his senses.
'Behind!' he thought quickly as he turned his body.
Nothing. There was nothing he could find.
"I'm here."
The cold feeling creeping up the back of his neck made him turn around once more. However, as he did, his head was suddenly gripped tightly from both sides. With a strong force, the hand pressed Jogo's head down. Finally, he had to let his face kiss a young man's knee very hard and was accompanied by surging black flashes.
"Fuck!" Jogo cursed while enduring the pain.
Ignoring the pain and blood from his mouth and nose, Jogo was disgusted at having been humiliated thus far. The cursed spirit swiftly touched Hachiman's chest. And from there, the young man felt a scorching sensation.
Alarmed by his screaming survival instinct, Hachiman immediately released his grip on Jogo's head and immediately jumped away. Unfortunately, Jogo's attacks were a bit faster, so the fire started consuming Hachiman's body. Not wanting to end up ridiculous, Hachiman immediately tore off his shirt by force and threw it away.
'A lethal attack with just one touch, I'll definitely be seriously injured if I'm too late to protect my body using cursed energy reinforcement,' thought Hachiman.
Hachiman glanced down and saw his shirtless body emitting thin smoke due to the effects of Jogo's attack. As a trained sorcerer, he has a well-built body. His muscles may not be as large as Todo Aoi's, but anyone who saw Hachiman's shirtless body would agree that he has well-structured muscles in strategic places.
Moreover, the scar given by Quanxi on the left side of his abdomen left a pretty wild impression on the young man's body.
On the other hand, Jogo, who had just successfully landed his first attack, didn't immediately rush at his opponent. He didn't want to admit it. But he understood that the sorcerer before him possessed a very troublesome cursed technique.
'Moreover, what's with each of his attacks? His punches were strong, and it felt like an awful feeling had entered my mouth and stomach. That disgusting feeling makes it harder for me to concentrate every time I get hit.'
Both Hachiman and Jogo now prefer a passive approach. The two were reluctant to take the initiative because they knew that even a slight miscalculation could cause them significant losses.
Especially for Jogo. With the bits and pieces of data he gathered in the brief clash, some information flashed into his mind.
"It's an illusion, isn't it, your cursed technique?" Jogo guessed without hesitation, "You messed up my mind so much that it made the visual appearance as if I was facing you. In fact, the truth is you were hiding and waiting for the most appropriate time to ambush."
'His cursed technique is very simple, but this boy's creativeness makes him a troublesome opponent. Moreover, how did he trap me in the illusion? His illusions had affected me before I got hit by his first attack. Which means he can do it without the need for physical contact. Not to mention about those Black Flashes.'
Jogo stared sharply and hatefully at Hachiman. His black teeth chattered against his desire.
Meanwhile, although his opponent already knew the outline of his cursed technique, Hachiman didn't feel cornered. On the contrary, his composure was unshakable, and even the corner of his lip lifted slightly to give Jogo a sneer.
"Your head can still think pretty well, huh? I thought hot-blooded creatures like you just moved on instinct."
"A lowly human like you dare to think of me as a fool?" replied Jogo.
Hachiman once again gave Jogo a mocking grin.
"Out of all people, you chose to attack Gojo Satoru even though you seemed to know what kind of person he is. I don't know what word is better for you than stupidly idiot. Or does that empty head of yours not know the meaning of stupid? I don't know if such a useless brain really exists."
Hearing Hachiman's provocation, the air around Jogo vibrated violently as the temperature increased tremendously. Even so, Hachiman stood his ground as if the wrath of the cursed spirit that embodied the volcano was nothing.
'Well, his cursed energy is intimidating, but it pales compared to Okkotsu.'
Hachiman actually also wanted to show his feats by pitting his cursed energy aura, which had a unique trait. However, he didn't want to get carried away and stay focused on playing all his cards right.
Jogo saw Hachiman, who started to warm up. He thought the sorcerer would dart toward him. However, all his screaming nerves made him realise something. And sure enough, Hachiman's figure was suddenly behind him with a punch several inches from him.
"Don't look down on me, brat!"
Lava exploded and spread in all directions and centred on Jogo's body.
Hachiman, who noticed this in time, immediately jumped back to take a safe distance. However, before that, he fired a ball of cursed energy that was compressed on his right forefinger and hit Jogo right on the head.
The power was not as strong as Black Flash, but the attack managed to send Jogo several metres. The cursed spirit swiftly dug its feet into the asphalt to apply friction until it finally stopped.
On the other hand, even though Hachiman managed to avoid the massive magma explosion, his right hand was about 50% melted by the lava. It was because he was nagging to shoot raw energy. As such, he had to use the Reverse Cursed Technique to heal his right hand. However, Hachiman didn't really heal it 100%. He only used that positive energy-based technique to stop the bleeding and keep his right hand in shape for fighting.
Ultimately, he had to endure the pain and fight with a charred right hand. He had no choice but to conserve his curse energy as best he could.
"It's great that you noticed my presence," Hachiman shouted a little so Jogo could hear him.
"You think I will get hit by the same trick a third time? Don't be silly. Even though you could make your existence seem to disappear from my sight, you couldn't hide your intention to attack me. Even if it's not killing or just intent to harm, it's that intent that naturally gives off your own existence."
Even though he has uncovered a few secrets behind his opponent's technique, Jogo couldn't let himself be complacent. Because basically, if he didn't have an area of effect-based attack, Jogo won't be able to counterattack at the last second. And in the end, Hachiman's attack would still hit him. Jogo was very confident about his own speed, but he knew his opponent was also fast.
"This time, I will really kill you, brat."
While saying that, a ball shot out and bounced off the top of the volcano in his head.
"You know, the last person who said that to me actually ended up having her head cut off," Hachiman replied, remembering Quanxi.
'Let's end this quickly,' thought the young sorcerer seriously.
Hachiman ran toward Jogo at average speed. Meanwhile, Jogo narrowed his cycloptic eyes to see his opponent, who didn't lunge at his full speed. Whatever it was, Jogo thought it was both a stupid thing and an opportunity for him.
"Ember Insects."
Some rocks came out from the volcanic opening at the tip of his head. The rocks popped up and quickly turned into insect-like creatures with large needles in their mouths. Without needing to be commanded by Jogo, the insects hurtled toward Hachiman at an exceeding speed.
The boy didn't feel intimidated by a flock of insect-like creatures about to lunge at him. On the contrary, Hachiman increased his speed while linking his middle and index fingers to form a hand seal.
"Cursed Technique Reversal: Superposition…, Partial Activation."
In plain view, there was no significant change after Hachiman cast his spell. However, when Jogo's insects were about to hit him, they penetrated his body and only passed him. Since they could not think independently, the insects were set to explode upon hitting a specific target. Because of that, they will explode even though they missed their target.
'What the hell is that? Did he avoid it? No. It's obvious that my attack has already hit him!'
Ignoring Jogo's surprise, Hachiman, who increased his speed, arrived at Jogo's left side in the blink of an eye. Instead of hitting him, Hachiman pushed Jogo hard and buried him in the cliff wall on the side of the road. The impact caused a thunderous thumping sound and created a large crack.
After successfully locking Jogo's movement, Hachiman threw several hard punches to Jogo's face. Those hits didn't cause a black flash because he didn't do it on purpose. However, receiving repeated punches without being able to counter because his movements had been locked made Jogo feel overwhelmed.
Not wanting the humiliation to last any longer, Jogo finally succeeded in pressing his palm against the cliff wall. Responding to that, a volcanic opening was created right in the cliff wall only a few centimetres away from Hachiman's head. In less than a second, the vomit of high-concentration lava devoured Hachiman and anything that got in its way.
With a short breath, Jogo wiped the purple blood that was coming out of his mouth.
"That was a little entertaining, but in the end, a pest like you is nothing," said Jogo with a condescending look.
After the effects of the lava flow subsided and confirmed no traces of Hachiman's body, Jogo was about to turn around and leave the scene. However. He didn't have time to do anything before his cheek had to be willing to kiss the punch, powered with Black Flash, that made him vomit blood again until he was thrown several metres.
"If you can't find your opponent's body, it doesn't mean the fight is over. Seriously, is your brain just a display to the point where you can't think that far ahead?"
Jogo, who had stopped after being thrown a few metres, looked at Hachiman sharply and hatefully. Not what he expected. There was not the slightest burn on his body, even though the sorcerer had received a heavy burst of lava. There was indeed a scorched wound on his right hand, but it wasn't the injury inflicted from his last attack. Instead, it was only a wound because Hachiman was forced to shoot raw energy even though he was cornered a moment ago.
"How could that be?" asked Jogo in disbelief.
Not wanting to wait for Hachiman to answer his question, Jogo jumped away to keep his distance. Until they were more than 50 meters apart, Jogo cast his spell with hatred.
"Maximum: Meteor!"
Hachiman suddenly felt a hot sensation that was enough to make all his sweat evaporate. It was not a normal burning sensation but an increased temperature accompanied by a horrible feeling that made the air heavier.
Hachiman tilted his head up, looking up at the night sky. And far above, a gigantic object had been created out of nothing. The thing was a giant rock covered in fiery flames. The object was approaching at a constant speed. However, the effect of the gravitational force increased its speed as it approached the earth.
"Seriously," Hachiman commented, furrowing his brows.
Jogo stared at his work with pride. Even though his body was battered, a bright smile could still be printed on his face. He then looked far ahead to where Hachiman was silently staring at the gigantic object about to greet him.
With an evil grin, Jogo said, "Behold the majesty of nature's wrath. And vanish with the heat of the worldly hell."
The meteor hit the earth right after the verse finished and destroyed everything without discrimination. The road and cliffs were destroyed by the enormity of the meteor. The forests were engulfed in indiscriminately dancing fire in horrors. The smell of burnt wood and parched earth quickly filled the air.
Witnessing the horror he caused, Jogo just stared at him blankly.
"Hanami might nag me if she finds out I burned part of this forest."
Still not moving in his place, Jogo contemplated whether his actions were too much. His opponent was only a young sorcerer, a nameless sorcerer. However, he had to go to great lengths to defeat him.
"Who is… this Hanami you mentioned? She isn't the cursed spirit I fought the other day, is she?"
Jogo gasped again for the umpteenth time after suddenly feeling someone's presence beside him. His voice was familiar, as he had heard during this clash.
Jogo swung his arms to the side, trying to attack his opponent. However, even though he was sure it would hit him, his hand only penetrated the figure like he wasn't hitting anything. Realising that his attacks would only end in vain, Jogo immediately jumped to the side to keep his distance and then glared at his opponent.
"How could it be?!" he asked in disbelief.
Once again, Hachiman—the sorcerer who frustrated him—reappeared without a scratch at all. At this rate, Jogo could hardly believe what he was witnessing. Moreover, his punch just penetrated Hachiman's body like nothing, reminding him of his insect attack a moment ago, which also ended in the same way.
Hachiman walked over casually. He saw Jogo's question just now as an opportunity to activate a binding vow of Revealing One's Hand.
"Cursed Technique Reversal. I don't know whether the cursed spirit also understands this," said Hachiman, who started to reveal his card.
"If you use a cursed technique powered by positive energy, the effect of your technique will be reversed. The basis of my cursed technique is projecting illusions. However, what exactly is an illusion? It's just a manifestation of a difference in perspective. What you thought was real could be fake, and what you believed to be fake turned out to be reality. The only way to prove whether it's an illusion is to check it first hand."
Hachiman turned around, showing off his shirtless back to Jogo. He didn't care, even if the cursed spirit was his opponent.
"That dualism in one coin is called illusion. Truth is just an assumptive until you prove it yourself. And by reversing the concept, I can transform myself into a being in both states. Between there and not. The conditions in which the quantum world exists. A superposition."
Jogo actually didn't like this situation. He didn't like seeing creatures lower than him flaunt their skills. However, he had no other choice. Hikigaya Hachiman's abilities were beyond what he expected. His ability was much more refined than just ordinary sorcerers. In this case, Jogo could say that the teenager was the embodiment of the illusion itself. However, there was still one thing he didn't understand.
Seeing the cursed spirit's expression, Hachiman understood that his words couldn't reach Jogo's brain.
Hachiman snorted and said, "When I enter a state of superposition, my physical body vanishes and blends into infinite possibilities within a certain range. You can say it was what they call the quantum realm. However, thanks to your friend with a face full of stitches. He has continued to haunt me ever since. I was afraid of having to be touched by him, but continuously using the reversal technique was also not to my advantage due to the superposition itself. So, I devised a solution to activate a portion of the reversal technique in small, controlled portions instead of activating the whole technique."
Every thesis would always get an antithesis. Meanwhile, the discussion of the thesis and antithesis in the forum will create a synthesis. Synthesis was the conclusion that became the solution of the thesis and antithesis. If the thesis was Hachiman himself, the antithesis was Mahito and his ability to change souls with one touch. It meant that Hachiman's fears and anxieties were the processes that led him to a solution. And that solution was the synthesis.
In that sense, Hachiman had reached that stage. Partial Activation was the answer that came to the boy. In other words, instead of sending his entire body into a superposition state, Hachiman only shifted parts of his body that could potentially become targets. Therefore, from the naked eye, there was no significant change until his body actually collided with something.
This method was far more efficient than a full reversal technique in terms of energy consumption. However, that did not mean this technique could be activated automatically. The body parts to be transferred still have to follow Hachiman's will and control. In other words, reaction and concentration were the keys. Simply put, if the attack was faster than Hachiman's reaction speed, it would still be able to hit him.
"Don't mess with me! A nameless lowly being like you could do something like that?" asked Jogo with arrogance.
Jogo still couldn't believe it. Or rather, his pride refused to admit it. Meanwhile, Hachiman only responded casually by shrugging his shoulders. For him, it didn't matter if he believed it or not. What was clear was that now he could feel the effects of the binding vow Revealing One's Hand.
Not only had his cursed energy output increased, but Hachiman also felt the cursed energy within him flowing more smoothly, making it easier to control.
Jogo, who was still humiliated, quickly swung his hand forward. Simultaneously, he threw a lump of lava at Hachiman. However, the young sorcerer only remained silent. His fingers had already formed hand seals, allowing him to quickly activate the technique.
That way, the lava thrown by Jogo only penetrated Hachiman's head.
'I've used too much cursed energy. If I prolong this fight too long, it can backfire me in the blink of an eye.'
Like divers with thicker lung walls, they could accommodate more air pressure. Or just like a footballer who had stronger leg muscles so he could generate more power. The intense training that Hachiman underwent under Hiratsuka's tutelage increased the amount of cursed energy and its efficiency drastically. However, that didn't mean he could easily fight without proper calculations.
"You see, there is an extraordinary sorcerer in this world who can instantly copy other people's cursed techniques and use them at will. I cannot perform such a feat. However, after I reach this level, there is one technique I can conceptually imitate."
Jogo raised his alert. He didn't know the meaning behind those words, but he knew that the sorcerer would do something. And just as he thought. Hachiman raised his right fist, held it up, and linked his middle and index fingers. With a low cry, Hachiman's voice, carried by the wind, was well conveyed to Jogo.
"Cursed Technique Reversal: Superposition."
Hachiman's body evaporated and disappeared along with a thin red mist. Jogo, who saw it narrowed his cycloptic eyes.
'It's not an illusion. As he said, he was in a state of superposition. In other words, it would be impossible for me to know his existence. However, that also means he won't be able to touch me. So, he would only unleash his technique when he was about to attack me. This isn't much different from his usual trick, but only a lot more complicated and tricky. As long as my timing is right, I can hit him.'
Jogo sharpened all his senses. He gathered his cursed energy at a point in his body and was ready to detonate his technique when he felt any hint of Hachiman's appearance. The most likely thing he thought was that Hachiman would appear from behind him.
However, the reality was much friendlier than he had expected. The young sorcerer appeared right before him, only a metre away.
'You fool. With that distance, it's enough for me to burn you.'
That's what Jogo thought. Even so, his anger blinded him, so he couldn't realise something in Hachiman's left palm. Something that looked like a ball of energy glowed white with a red spectrum appeared in the teenager's grasp. And the ball was the size of a baseball.
"I suck at naming things. And I realised I tended to spit out silly words. So, even the name of this spell might sound weird."
Hachiman did not go any further. He stopped precisely one metre away. However, he threw the ball-shaped object at Jogo's face.
"Cursed Technique Reversal Lapse: Deuterium... Cat."
With just a blink of an eye, something ball-shaped and glowing white with a red spectrum hit Jogo's face. At the same time, Jogo spewed lava at Hachiman.
Since Hachiman stopped in his tracks at one metre, it gave him enough momentum to take action. He quickly reactivated the reversal technique to avoid the effect of his own attack.
There was a massive explosion after Hachiman's attack hit Jogo. The attack was capable of shaking and creating small-scale earthquakes. The bright white explosion seemed to sweep away everything around it. The calm night sky now had a white tint adorned the horizon for a moment. Even the trees that escape death still have to survive the strong gusts of wind,
It was an indiscriminate attack. In fact, if Hachiman didn't escape using his reversal technique, he would also be affected by the attack himself.
Hachiman reappeared around the highway at a safe distance. He stared at his handiwork while holding his left hand, which was trembling because it couldn't bear the weight of the technique. And even though he tried to hide it with his calm expression, panting breaths could be seen faintly escaping from his mouth. And without his permission, the thick red liquid ran from his nose.
—OoOoO—
Two people with different hair colours were on a cliff near the great battle. They were a famously energetic teacher and student pair. And they were two figures who often became the talk of the world of jujutsu, with very different topics, of course.
"A-amazing."
A pink-haired boy couldn't take his eyes off for even a second. His eyes were focused entirely on the extraordinary presentation of the high-class battle he had witnessed.
"I know, right?" replied the white-haired man with a black cloth covering his eyes.
The names are Gojo Satoru and Itadori Yuuji, As Satoru had said. He brought Yuuji—the student currently sentenced to death—to the place where a high-level clash occurred. With his teleportation ability, he could quickly pick up Yuuji and come to the scene. That way, they could watch the course of the battle from the start.
"What do you think, Yuuji?" asked Satoru, smiling at Yuuji.
The first-year boy couldn't answer right away. He didn't have the right words to describe what he witnessed. He was ignorant. He thought the cursed spirit he faced a few days ago—which forced him to give his body to Sukuna—was a high-level cursed spirit. He was ashamed because he complained about the difficulties that made him die while there were still many monstrous creatures.
"I… can't say anything. A meteor suddenly appeared out of nowhere, and then a bright white explosion engulfed and shook everything around it. Everything feels alien to me."
Satoru smiled and returned his gaze to the scene before him.
"Look and absorb what you are witnessing right now. This is the league where the pinnacle of jujutsu resides. If you wanted to protect yourself from Sukuna, you had no choice but to be on an equal footing with them. At the very least, that is the lowest bar you should set."
Satoru paused for a moment before continuing in a cheerful tone.
"Well, you don't need to worry, though. As long as I, The GTS, am here, everything will be fine."
'Even if something unexpected happens to me, everything will be fine because Hachiman and Yuta can handle it. Moreover, if Maki can reach that person's level and Megumi can awaken his Ten Shadows' full potential. In that case, there will be nothing to worry about anymore,' Satoru added.
It was no longer a secret that Satoru placed his trust and expectations on his students at Tokyo Jujutsu Tech. Meanwhile, Yuuji turned his head strangely after hearing his teacher's outlandish declaration.
"GTS? Grand Theft… Satoru?"
"Great Teacher Satoru," the strongest sorcerer quickly corrected.
'I don't think he's a great teacher, though. Well, he's even more like a comedian,' Yuuji thought with a drop of sweat.
Their conversation paused for a moment. That was because Satoru preferred to focus on the location of Hachiman's battle. One thing intrigued him, and he couldn't help but smile broadly.
'That was… a technique that imitated the concept of my Red, right? Boy, his creativity is beyond my imagination. My choice to send him to study under Hiratsuka doesn't betray him at all,' Satoru thought.
It was precise, as Satoru had said. The Deuterium Cat was a technique that simply imitated the concept of Satoru's Red technique.
The technique of Red was a variation of Satoru's cursed technique, which was powered using positive energy. Basically, Limitless—Satoru's cursed technique—was a technique that allowed him to manipulate space. This was also what made Satoru could use teleportation and "float" in the air.
Imbued with a high amount of negative energy, Satoru created a technique called Blue, and he could produce a vacuum. Through this, he made a scenario where the world was forced to correct itself and fill in the negative space, causing all matter in the range of the commanded space to be pulled together.
On the other hand, Red worked as the opposite of Blue. With this technique, Satoru could create a divergence effect in space. In other words, by collecting matters at the atomic level and concentrating them at a single point, they would be scattered randomly to correct themselves. This effect created a full repelling force that swept away anything in its path. In fact, even a skyscraper could be easily destroyed in the face of Satoru's Red technique.
Meanwhile, Hachiman, who could enter the quantum realm using his reversal technique, could see what he had not been able to see and feel what he couldn't until now. And, of course, if you could see and feel it, you could touch it too.
At first, Hachiman didn't think of this possibility. However, Hachiman could come to such a conclusion due to Hiratsuka's guidance. That was based on Hiratsuka's confession by Hachiman, who received a lot of new, abstract information when he first used his Superposition technique.
Briefly, Hiratsuka's basic idea was that he could have control at the sub-atomic level when he entered superposition mode. That way, Hachiman could pull all the atoms around him when fully activating his reversal technique. The amount was not much, about a kilogram.
Since he was attracting mostly hydrogen atoms, which were abundant in the world, he encased them using cursed energy. This made it function like a fusion reactor. In other words, besides the occurrence of repulsive forces between atoms, the probability of quantum tunnelling also approached one. This meant in the energy ball created by Hachiman, the fusion reaction of hydrogen atoms would occur naturally even though the amount was small and could not sustain the chain reaction longer.
This made Hachiman's attack a simplified version of a hydrogen bomb. It was said to be simplified because the fusion reactions that occur were not triggered by fission reactions and only occurred naturally by utilising the phenomenon of quantum tunnelling. However, the repelling force of the atoms combined with the energy blast of the hydrogen fusion reaction made Hachiman's attack on par with Satoru's Red technique. Not only equal, it was also conceptually similar except for Satoru's technique which ignored the existence of fusion reactions.
"The Reversal technique that leaves him untouched and its development is similar to my Red. Didn't he really make me a role model? Heh, you tsundere brat," Satoru said with a mischievous smile.
Yuuji, who didn't understand what his teacher meant, turned to him.
"What?"
However, Satoru had no intention of answering that. Instead of relieving the pink-haired boy's curiosity, Satoru said something else.
"Nothing. Now let's go to Hachiman's place. I'll have him show you what Domain Expansion is like."
"Eh? The fight isn't over yet, sensei? After being hit by that much damage?"
Satoru shook his head and replied, "That's what it means to face a disaster-cursed spirit. His physical endurance cannot be underestimated. However, in this case, just one or two punches from Hachiman was enough to end it."
Yuuji was about to reply. However, Satoru, who did not want to receive any questions, immediately grabbed the boy by the collar and activated his teleportation again.
—OoOoO—
'Are humans really this strong?' mused Jogo, who was now floating on the water's surface.
His face was crushed and almost shapeless. Luckily for him, that he was a cursed spirit, he could regenerate his wounds without needing a complicated technique like the Reverse Cursed Technique. However, bringing his head back to its perfect shape would still take a lot of energy. Since he was now wholly battered and must store cursed energy to continue the clash, Jogo preferred to regenerate only to a level that made him comfortable to fight with.
After being hit by Hachiman's bomb, he was sent flying very far. The force of the attack sent him flying far enough that he was humiliated on the surface of a lake. He hated to admit it, but he didn't have a chance in front of the teenager. The speed and destructive power he had been so proud of seemed meaningless in front of a high-grade sorcerer.
He couldn't hold back his embarrassment because he could only burn the teenager's shirt and burnt his right hand. Other than that, there were no accomplishments that he could be proud of.
'Fine. But you will die, Jogo.'
That reality reminded Jogo of Geto's warning words just before he decided to ambush Gojo Satoru.
"Khekhekhe… he was not joking, huh?" said Jogo, laughing sadly and trying to stand up with a limp.
Jogo stared ahead angrily at the spot where Hachiman had just landed on the lake's surface.
'If I can't hit him, I will drag him into my domain. The high-level technique he had used earlier must have drained his cursed energy. This is my last chance. So, whatever it takes.'
—To Be Continued—
Author's Note: First of all, maybe some of you have thought, "isn't Jogo's durability too high here?". Well, I understand that question since Gege himself said that Jogo would be exorcised from the damage that Hanami got after being hit by heavy attacks from Maki, Megumi, Yuuji, and Todo, especially Black Flash successively from Yuuji.
I understand that. However, I hope you guys know there's a big difference here. Putting aside Hanami's injuries from students other than Yuuji, Hachiman basically had less raw physical strength than Yuuji. So, a Black Flash from Yuuji is definitely stronger than a Black Flash from Hachiman. As such, it took three Black Flashes, repeated punches, a shot to the face, and a technique similar to a hydrogen bomb, before Jogo could almost die. I mean, even after he's become Satoru's butt, he still has enough energy to keep the joke going. So, I hope you guys can accept this logic.
Secondly, I hope you don't have any complaints about Hachiman's power-up. If you look back, I already discussed the concept of this power-up in chapter 17 (18, including the prologue).
Even though the outcome is different for some reason (which I will explain on another occasion), the outline remains the same. In short, with Hachiman entering superposition mode, he is on the same wavelength as the particles in the quantum realm. With great effort, he can collect it and wrap it using positive energy because the nature of positive energy is not destructive, so it has an effect similar to a fusion reactor. And then according to what is written.
Meanwhile, even though I've made a final concept of all of Hachiman's abilities since I wrote chapter 1, I'm still unsure whether I should include "Partial Activation" in the story. However, after seeing that even the Maximum Technique could be made a "minimise" version, my doubts disappeared, and I thought, " If that can be done, why not a technique reversal?"
The same goes for Hachiman's "Deuterium Cat", a.k.a "Cursed Technique Reversal Lapse". Suppose Lapse can be applied by applying a large amount of negative energy to a cursed technique. In that case, I think the Reversal Technique should also have a Lapse version if given a more significant amount of positive energy. Plus, Hachiman can already use a "normal" Lapse, shown in chapter 3 (4, including the prologue). So, for the logic of using Lapse, Hachiman has mastered it. In this chapter, he just applies it differently.
Speaking of that, I took the name "Deuterium Cat" from deuterium, the heavy hydrogen produced by joining two hydrogen atoms. Meanwhile, I took the "Cat" from Erwin Schrodinger. He is best known for the "Schrodinger Equation for the Hydrogen Atom", which explains the combining of hydrogen atoms. While the most famous of Mr Schrodinger himself is the Schrodinger cat experiment. So, by using "Deuterium Cat", I also want to give the credit to Mr Schrodinger.
And for a guest review. As I recall, what Kenjaku said about being a "Special Grade" was being able to overthrow a country, not destroy it. There is a big difference between the two. Overthrowing does not mean destroying, but destroying is definitely also overturning.
From the Hachiman vs Quanxi fight, it is very clear that he can mess up his opponent's mind. I was referring to when he covered Quanxi's vision with a shirt, so she couldn't see, and then he activated his illusion to completely trap Quanxi in the darkness illusion. Not to mention when he slowly instilled fear in Quanxi by bringing up Satoru's name. If you pay close attention, Hachiman's trick takes advantage of the placebo effect. There are many cases where the placebo effect messes up people's lives, drives them crazy, and even makes someone die. Although there are also many whose lives are getting better because they receive good suggestions.
In essence, Hachiman may not have the power of mass destruction like Satoru and Suguru. In fact, he still couldn't bear the weight of using "Deuterium Cat". However, by using his illusion technique, he could also overthrow a country. His method might not be as grand as Suguru, who could charge in with an army of cursed spirits. However, by nature, he would act more subduedly, manipulating government people, creating internal chaos, and bringing down strategic organizations.
After all, Hachiman's creative use of technique and his brain power were the scariest.
