Chapter 31: Komachi Assassination 1.
—OoOoO—
"Oh, Komachi-chan, thank you for helping us, even though today wasn't your turn."
The girl called Komachi smiled kindly at the words of one of the female students in her class.
"It's okay, no problem. After all, it's also partly my fault that made the PE class stretch out."
"Oh, my, Komachi-chan… how can you be this kind?"
"No, no, no. It's only natural to help a friend, right?" Komachi replied with a crisp laugh and waved her hand.
It didn't happen daily, but scenes where Komachi received lots of praise and affection from her friends were familiar at this middle school.
Komachi was like a diva at her school. She often got various kinds of flattery, admiration, and even love letters, both from boys and girls. How come? She was the perfect girl. Her academics were impressive, she was very good at sports, had a beautiful and adorable face, and most importantly, she was kind to everyone. Moreover, she was a proactive student, having even served as the student council president during this period.
It was no wonder that many were charmed by her generosity.
Well, even so, some girls were still jealous of her. They even once spread rumours that the girl's goodness was just a fake and a mere charade to gain popularity. However, it didn't affect anything. Komachi and her surroundings remained unperturbed.
As for Komachi herself, she would probably understand why people saying she was exaggerating a bit. It couldn't be helped, considering she had decided to enter Tokyo Jujutsu Tech after graduating from middle school. In other words, she could no longer enjoy as many activities as an ordinary girl would when she made her official debut as a jujutsu sorcerer later.
As such, she decided to go all-out during middle school and left without leaving a shred of regret.
"Hikigaya-san sure is pretty flashy, huh?" said a boy while picking up the scattered shuttlecocks.
"I didn't believe there was a perfect human being, and it was shattered the moment I met her. I'm glad I was wrong."
Another bot nudged his body with an elbow and laughed "hahaha."
"Hey, you sound like someone who just met a goddess."
"She's smart, beautiful, kind, and indifferent towards people. I don't know any other words to describe her except she is a goddess."
The five boys who had gathered laughed silly at Komachi being the subject of their adoration.
"Taishi, how about you? You like Hikigaya-san, right? When are you going to confess your feeling?"
"W-what? No way I do that," replied Taishi.
His friend put his arm around Taishi's shoulder and whispered something.
"Come on…. It's summer break soon, you know? Don't you want to spend your holiday together with Hikigaya-san?"
Taishi seemed to contemplate the proposal. However, a blush suddenly appeared on his cheeks.
"As expected, that's impossible. It's hard, you know? Moreover, her brother looks really scary."
"Eh, Hikigaya-san has a brother?"
Taishi didn't answer. He just gave a nod.
His mind dived back when he met Komachi's brother and his clubmates, who helped him solve his sister's problems.
It was the first time he met Komachi's brother. As an extrovert, he pulled out all the stops in communicating to get good credit from Hachiman. However, the overwhelming intensity that Hachiman exuded every time he caught him trying to approach Komachi made his guts shrink.
"Well, forget about that. Just tell Hikigaya-san how you feel, man. I mean, her brother couldn't do anything if she gave you an ok, right?"
Taishi looked tiredly at his friend.
'If only you know how scary Hikigaya-san's brother is.'
In the next second, Taishi realised something. He was pretty surprised by his friends who insisted on asking him to confess his feelings for the diva.
"Hey, this is weird, you know? Why are you so insistent on me? I mean, you've all done it before and received a flat rejection, right? So, you guys should know yourself that there's no chance I'll be accepted by Hikigaya-san."
Taishi was curious about the reason for his friend's stubbornness. However, that turned into a suspicious look when he saw them all stifling a laugh together.
"That's the point, bro. We've all been rejected by Hikigaya-san, except for you. So, it's only fair that you get rejected too. And if that happens…, don't worry. We might just laugh at you."
A burst of laughter was heard after one of the boys told the truth about their support. Meanwhile, Taishi just stared at them with a deep sigh.
He knew it. It was too good to be true. These geeks couldn't support it without something suspicious behind it.
"Hey, boys! Stop rambling and do your jobs properly!"
They could hear someone from the girl group shouting at them from the other side of the gymnasium. If combined, nine people were still in the gymnasium even though the PE class was over. Five of the nine people were boys, and the remaining four were girls.
They cleaned up items previously used in PE class, such as shuttlecocks, nets, and other gymnastic equipment. With that much effort, it should take a little time to finish. However, because they moved their mouths more often than their hands, it made their cleaning time longer.
They joked around too much. Even Komachi was really enjoying her time. Because of that, she wasn't aware when someone suddenly casually entered the gymnasium.
"Well, well, middle schoolers sure are noisy, huh?"
The nine students in the building simultaneously turned their heads towards the source of the sound that suddenly appeared.
"A gyaru?" muttered Taishi.
What interrupted them was a girl with slightly tanned skin with pale blonde hair in a ponytail. She wore a uniform with a very short skirt and a yellow cardigan that covered her body. The girl also carried a pink smartphone in her right hand.
"I've never seen her before. Is she a new student?"
"I don't know. But doesn't her suit look like a high school uniform?"
A girl from Komachi's group turned to the boys, talking about the newly appeared figure.
"Eh, what's a high school student doing here?"
Meanwhile, Komachi felt something uncomfortable with the girl, especially from the smartphone she held. Even though it was hidden well, she could feel traces of cursed energy in it. However, when she tried to feel the presence of the gyaru girl, everything seemed normal in her eyes.
'Or… is she more skilled at hiding her cursed energy?'
Komachi wanted to tell her friends to get out immediately. However, she couldn't do it. She had no idea of that intruder's intentions and goals. If she gave the wrong command, the lives of her friends might be threatened. Because of that, she was extra careful this time.
"What do you want?" she asked.
"I'm looking for someone named Hikigaya Komachi," the girl paused for a moment, "Well, I already know your face, though. But it would be better if you stepped forward voluntarily."
Everyone looked at Koamchi in wonder when they heard her name being called. However, the owner of the name only gave a sharp look.
"Oh my, how impolite of me not to introduce myself first."
The girl smiled crookedly. Clapping the end of her phone against her head, she introduced herself.
"The name's Hasaba Nanako…., a disciple of master Geto Suguru."
Komachi's body tensed as she heard the name.
Geto Suguru…, no way she didn't know that name. The worst criminal in the history of the modern jujutsu era. The one who would have almost ruled Tokyo and Kyoto if not for Gojo Satoru. What disgusted her the most, he was the one who put her in a difficult position. She thought she could enjoy some quiet times after the tension between her family and the two great clans eased. However, the chaos that Geto Suguru caused drove the association to label her as dangerous because she had a similar cursed technique.
Komachi had no choice and was about to tell her friends to stay away. However, she was too late when she sensed cursed energy activity outside the gymnasium.
The sunlight filtering through the window disappeared and was replaced by cold darkness. Her friends fainted as if they had been hit by some sleeping gas. Komachi knew the sensation all too well. It was a spell commonly used when sorcerers were performing their actions.
'A curtain? She has other comrades outside?'
Komachi clenched her jaw and glared fiercely at the gyaru girl before her.
"Don't worry. My sister has locked up the entire school. Not only to prevent others from seeing what happened but also to prevent them from approaching this area," said the girl.
Komachi smiled crookedly at the words so that a single canine appeared in her mouth.
The girl quickly took out a talisman she always kept in her pocket. With a single throw, the talisman was enveloped in blue flames and flew behind Komachi. In just seconds, a black cursed spirit with the shape of an upside-down eggplant was already on Komachi's left shoulder. The cursed spirit had locked itself onto Komachi's shoulders so it wouldn't fall over, even if it took the brunt of the shock.
"Being ambushed by an assassin like this…, makes me feel nostalgic. Seeing you being so reckless coming to Chiba, I don't think you know whose territory is it and what kind of people you're dealing with?"
"Hiratsuka Shizuka, not too flashy at first glance, but without a doubt, she's a very dangerous woman. A woman that even my master acknowledges. And, of course, your brother, Hikigaya Hachiman, who was recently made a special grade."
Nanako gave Komachi a condescending smile before she continued.
"Just because you're surrounded by great people, don't think I'm afraid of you. You're just a spoiled girl in my eyes."
"A spoiled girl, you say?" Komachi returned it with an annoyed smile.
"Yeah, you are. And I…, whether it's Hikigaya Hachiman or even Okkotsu Yuta, I've sworn I won't lose to Gojo Satoru's legacies. Because I am… Geto Suguru's disciple!"
Along with Nanako's declaration, Komachi took out dozens of talismans from Ten-kun's mouth, the name of the cursed spirit on her shoulder.
Komachi always carried around a talisman that stored or sealed Ten-kun within. The creature's ability to be utilised for storage made her more efficient because, previously, she had to carry around a sling bag full of talismans. With Ten-kun around, she just needed to summon it and then cast out the talismans she needed in the fight from its mouth.
"You don't know anything about me yet call me a spoiled girl? I'll instil in your brain what this spoiled girl can do," Komachi replied.
"Yeah, that's right! Come here, you little bitch!"
Nanako pointed her smartphone forward, with the rear camera facing Komachi. An active photo app on the screen was ready to take a picture of Komachi anytime with just one tap.
And yes, with one tap, Nanako managed to save Komachi's picture. Simultaneously, she also chanted her spell.
"Domain Expansion: Imaginary Image Processing."
—OoOoO—
Komachi widened her eyes. She didn't expect such a spell to be cast at the start of the fight. Hell, even the idea that her opponent could use domain expansion never crossed her mind.
At first, Komachi had darted towards Nanako, but she stopped in her tracks and jumped backwards. Her instincts screamed to quickly take a safe distance and strengthen her whole body. However, what happened wasn't what she thought.
'What? I don't feel any change. Did her domain fail?'
Komachi glanced right, left, and up to determine what environmental changes the domain expansion had brought about. However, she found nothing. She remained inside the gymnasium, complete with all of her unpacked equipment. But that wasn't what worried her.
Her friends, who were currently unconscious after the curtain was lowered, made her focus split. Moreover, now that they were trapped in the domain, Komachi couldn't ignore them.
Ignoring Komachi's concern, Nanako formed a hand seal by entwining the tips of her thumb and middle finger inward. In less than a second, the eight students who fainted seemed to be swallowed up by the floor.
Before Komachi could take action, Nanako said something.
"Don't worry, those monkeys are none of my business. My target was you from the start."
"Heh, you? The same person who wanted to wipe out the civilians in Tokyo and Kyoto? That's a bit rich coming from you."
Komachi had wanted to attack the girl immediately, but being trapped in the domain made her hesitate. Until now, she had not received any effects from the domain. Hence, she couldn't recklessly attack without knowing anything.
"You look confused with my domain? I guess your brother didn't teach you properly," Nanako said after seeing Komachi's confused face.
Nanako's domain was an old-style domain. In other words, her sure-hit wouldn't take effect until she explained the rules. Compared to modern domains, it was indeed not lethal. Moreover, the target could have attacked the user before the sure-hit was activated. Even so, she had anticipated that Komachi would discover the weakness of the old-style domain.
However, seeing that girl still hesitant to take action made Nanako breathe a little easier.
"My domain embodies the panoramas I shoot using my smartphone into the real world. In other words, anyone I shoot at will be automatically trapped in the domain as long as it's within my range. You can say that my domain is the image itself, and it will always take pictures of you in real-time."
That was why her domain now took the view of a gymnasium. Domain Expansion was a spell that manifested one's innate domain into the real world. That way, each domain was always unique, depending on each individual.
"I've explained the conditions. It's up to you whether you realise the trick or not," added Nanako.
In Nanako's case, her innate domain wasn't clear. It was a fuzzy scene, filled with only dense white mist. However, using the photo she took, the scenery that was only a mist turned into something that followed the photo. From then, she realised that her domain could take any form and be as large as anything, depending on where she was fighting and her skill.
'I didn't feel any effect until now. Does that mean it's an imperfect domain? If this imperfect domain takes the form of a gymnasium, wouldn't the domain's border be this room?' thought Komachi.
"You must think I'm using this gymnasium wall as a barrier, then you can escape by breaking through, right? That's an interesting theory. Why don't you try it?" challenged Nanako with a disdainful smile.
Even though it was only as big as a building when seen from the outside, Domain Expansions were generally very spacious inside. Of course, it differed and depended on the user's ability. Due to the immense size of the interior, it took a lot of work to find the border of the barrier. It would make breaking through from the inside even more impossible if it was a perfect domain. However, if it was an imperfect domain, you could run away once you've found the border.
However, Komachi couldn't be provoked and wouldn't act recklessly.
With the dozens of talismans she had cast and flying around her, Komachi summoned one of the cursed spirits she had tamed.
The talisman closest to her flashed a fiery blue flame. In the next second, a fly-like cursed spirit the size of a grown man's arm emerged. Without saying a word, the cursed spirit understood Komachi's order. With speed hard for normal eyes to follow, the creature shot towards the nearest wall and crashed into the solid object.
"It definitely won't be that simple, right?" muttered Komachi.
She saw not the outer side of the domain but rather a blank courtyard beside the gymnasium. Unfortunately, considering there were curtains enclosing the school, the scene outside should have been even darker. However, the fact that it was still sunny outside meant she didn't destroy the domain's border at all. In other words, her first theory has been proven wrong.
'She can still cast a cursed spirit even though my sure-hit effect is working? If I'm not mistaken, the talisman used to seal the cursed spirits makes it have the same nature as a cursed object. If so, I guess my barrier saw the cursed object and the object sealed within it become the same individual. That explains it all.'
Nanako put that aside and started thinking about what her opponent could and couldn't do within her domain. To provoke Komachi, she let out an evil, mocking grin.
"Too bad, huh?"
The gyaru girl reopened her smartphone. It had been prepared with a photo editor app and the Komachi's photo at the gymnasium. Nanako jumped far back to keep her distance. Simultaneously, she edited the photo. She drew crop lines around Komachi's body so she could shift her position as she pleased.
Nanako pinched Komachi's figure in the photo and reduced the size. Turning to Komachi's side, just as Nanako was reducing the size of her image in the picture, her body was suddenly sent flying backwards even though no force had hit her.
"What?" Komachi was surprised.
Her back hit the gymnasium stage and shattered the ledge. However, it didn't stop there. Komachi's body was thrown to the left until it broke through the wall, and then was thrown again to the right, then up and hit the ceiling. Ultimately, she was knocked to the floor by something she couldn't see.
It was a blow hard enough to cause a crack. The pain was not much. However, what was annoying was the dizzying sensation when she was flung here and there before finally being smashed onto the floor.
Komachi was about to get up with her head still spinning. However, while she was in the middle of the attempt, suddenly, a hand grabbed the back of her head and buried her into the floor with much more potent force.
"You stay there, you little shit."
It caused a hole in the floor. Sure enough, Komachi had to clench her jaw to endure the pain. Fresh blood seemed to stain the smooth forehead. But Nanako slammed her head again and again with no mercy.
With Nanako locking her body in a prone position, it was difficult for Komachi to offer resistance. Komachi's free hand tried to make a hand seal, but Nanako quickly locked it. While her hand was locked, she tried to use her left hand, but Nanako did the same.
It looked like a dead end for Komachi. However, without Nanako realising it, she slipped her left leg between Nanako's left knee, locking her face down. She pulled her right hand forward with all her might, which knocked Nanako off balance slightly.
Komachi quickly locked onto Nanako's left leg using her own leg that she had tucked behind Nanako's knee earlier. Before Nanako could react because she was still off balance, Komachi turned her body to the right. Putting her in a position to ride on Nanako. Without showing mercy, she punched Nanako's face fiercely several times.
Komachi felt Nanako's lifting legs and tried to push her forward. Not wanting to take the risk, she jumped up and performed a roll before finally standing up and turning to face Nanako.
She did that not without reason. Komachi knew that when Nanako tried to push her forward with her feet, it would send them into an even more intense ground battle. As a summoner, the ground battle gave her no advantage at all.
"You fought quite well for a summoner," said Nanako, wiping the blood from her mouth.
"Aren't it just you that sucks for being unable to pin me down properly?"
Komachi wiped the blood from her nose and then glanced at the cursed spirit on her shoulder.
"Ten-kun, you good?"
The cursed spirit only growled incoherently, but Komachi understood that perfectly well.
"Nice. Now take out more talismans," Komachi ordered in a low voice.
The plan was clear, Komachi would rush the girl using numbers. She didn't have to cast a cursed spirit second grade and above or something. She would use third-grade cursed spirits. Quantity over quality. She had released 11 talismans before being trapped in the domain. With one shattering after hitting the gymnasium wall, which was surprisingly stronger than a typical wall, now only ten cursed spirits were left.
Usually, it would only take a second for Ten-kun to cast the talismans Komachi wanted. However, when one second had passed, no talisman came out. That surprised her. She realised it wasn't like Ten-kun was being disobedient. Obviously, the cursed spirit's mouth had been opened, but nothing came out of it.
'That must be that girl's doing.'
At the same time, Komachi's body was pulled towards Nanako, who had been holding her smartphone again.
However, different from before, she was now calmer. Of the ten talismans left outside, Komachi released all the cursed spirits stored away. At the very least, she gave off two kinds of cursed spirits. Six had the shape of a caterpillar that was twice longer than a grown man's arm and had ten legs and eyes that pointed upwards like a snail. Meanwhile, the remaining four had the shape of a fly that Komachi had previously summoned.
Komachi, who was being dragged towards Nanako, prepared to deal a punch the moment she got close to her. However, Nanako swiftly avoided the punch that was aimed at her face.
"You're not the first person to try that, you know?"
Nanako then caught Komachi's face and forcedly buried her head on the floor. Seeing the horde of cursed spirits approaching her, she picked Komachi up and threw her far towards the stage. Only then did Nanako get away from the cursed spirits' invasion.
The phone she held disappeared, vanished from her hand. It wasn't like she had lost her weapon, but she could summon and dispel it in her domain.
Nanako punched a fly-like cursed spirit flying at her. However, on her left side has come another of its kind. The fly extends its arms from both sides. The arm had sharp nails, which were ready to claw her. However, the girl lowered her head and dodged it well. In fact, she grabbed it by the back and threw it at those who were starting to crowd her.
'A third-grade cursed spirit shouldn't be this strong, right? Has that girl already can imbue her cursed energy to those pets to strengthen them?'
Nanako thought she was at a safe distance from the crowd. However, she didn't realise that Komachi was waiting and preparing to punch her. The girl could only cross her arms to cushion the blow. It was a heavy punch, sending her four metres and crashing into a wall.
Komachi then held her cursed spirit, which had a caterpillar-like shape. Knowing what its master wanted, the cursed spirit tightened its legs and lowered its eyes that were pointed upwards. Her body stiffened like a staff, and Komachi used it as a staff.
The girl threw the cursed spirit at Nanako. But she could avoid it by tilting her body diagonally to the side. That made the cursed spirit crash into the gymnasium wall on Nanako's side, causing a hole.
'It didn't disappear even though it hit an artificial wall inside my domain. Her cursed energy reinforcement is enough to keep this lowly cursed spirit alive, huh?'
Nanako grinned at that.
'Heh, I expect nothing less from someone with a cursed technique similar to Master Geto.'
Sensing that fighting indoors was giving her no advantage, Nanako darted out of the hole Komachi had created.
She summoned her smartphone back and turned it on. An image of Komachi and the cursed spirits she had spawned had appeared in the photo editing app. Her fingers moved quickly to crop the cursed spirits in the photo. However, Komachi and her underlings didn't let Nanako carry out her plans peacefully.
A fly-like cursed spirit flew up to her. Nanako dispelled her phone and let it disappear into nothingness. She quickly dodged a cursed spirit rushing at her and grabbed its hand. The cursed spirit was spun into the air before she finally slammed into the ground. In the end, Nanako held the fly-like creature's hand and pulled it hard while her feet stepped on its body.
It only took a short time for the hands to leave its body. Utilising the sharp nails on those hands, Nanako turned her body 180 degrees and threw both hands at the other two cursed spirits approaching her.
The throw was strong enough to finish the target with one strike since she imbued it with cursed energy. Being in her own domain, Nanako got a 120 per cent buff. She had seen Komachi's capabilities so she wouldn't hold back.
The tanned blonde girl jumped away at the mob Komachi was carrying. Her phone reappeared from nothing. Continuing the previously delayed work, Nanako quickly scrolled through the pictures of the cursed spirits she had cropped in the photo.
The cursed spirits that followed Komachi's orders were suddenly sent flying randomly, following the direction of Nanako's finger on her phone's screen. The youngest Hikigaya tsked after seeing her formation disintegrate. Komachi's body was pulled forward in the next second towards Nanako.
'I won't fall for the same trick.'
Honestly, Komachi still couldn't figure out why her opponent could easily manipulate her surroundings. But she was sure it had something to do with her domain and smartphone. Even though she hadn't found a definite answer yet, that didn't mean she couldn't react with tricks used many times.
Komachi was already preparing to counterattack more effectively than before. However, her body suddenly stopped midair when she was only a metre away. It wasn't what she expected. Before her body fell to the ground, a knee kissed her chin very hard.
With the 120 per cent buff that Nanako got, her knee kick turned into a deadly attack. Although not as good as other top fighters, Nanako has good cursed energy reinforcement. After all, she was one of the survivors of the battle of Hyakki Yakou and trained directly under Geto Suguru.
Komachi's head was thrown back. Her eyes were closed while her teeth were clenched. A warm, fishy sensation was felt around her mouth, and a thick red liquid seemed to emerge from her nose.
Nanako spun her body 360 degrees without pausing and gave an elbow to the right side of Komachi's head. Even with great difficulty, Komachi still had a pretty good reaction. She managed to block it with her right hand. However, Nanako followed up by punching Komachi's right hand.
Nanako did not want to waste this opportunity, pulling down on Komachi's right wrist. It made her body shake a little. A powerful knee kick hit Komachi's right elbow joint the next moment.
'This bitch, she's aiming for my right hand on purpose,' Komachi thought, wincing in pain.
Nanako's idea was quite simple. She had never aimed for instant victory from the start. As much as possible, she wanted to disarm Komachi's movements one by one. That was why she kept attacking the girl's right arm whenever possible. That way, if this fight became an endurance battle, Nanako had already eliminated the factors that could harm her.
However, she knew this fight was no ordinary fight. She had to finish it as fast as possible because two monsters were waiting for her if she was late.
Nanako scanned the surroundings. She saw the cursed spirits that she had previously randomly thrown using a feature on her domain had begun to regroup.
'Tsk, this is why fighting a summoner is troublesome.'
There was nothing she was afraid of when facing Komachi, even if it had to be an endurance fight. However, what worried her actually came from the outside variable. Mimiko, her twin, stated that she only had 30 minutes before Hiratsuka Shizuka or Hikigaya Hachiman noticed their ambush. And it took less than five minutes until they came to the scene.
Armed with experience as a criminal so far, Nanako knew she couldn't stick to it alone. She knew her twin sister's calculations only worked if no X factor existed. Unfortunately, the world wasn't ideal, and everything could go their way. If Mimiko said she only had 30 minutes, she had to finish it in 15 minutes.
"I'm enjoying this fight, but I must end it."
Nanako linked her hands together and formed a hand seal. Coinciding with that, a paper photo contained a portrait of Komachi in the exact same position and condition as her current state and the cursed spirits she had cast out, appearing on Nanako's back.
Komachi was surprised. She remembered what Nanako had said about her domain, literally being able to photograph her constantly in real-time.
'Wait, is it her sure-hit effect all this time?'
Just as she was processing the information and starting to understand the mechanics of Nanako's domain, Komachi's body suddenly fell into a daze. She lost control over her own body and fell to her knees with a blank look in her eyes.
"Now, feel the taste of death."
—To Be Continued—
Author Note: Alright, the beginning of this chapter shows a bit of Komachi's interactions with her friends before the battle begins.
I've always wanted to write something from her perspective. However, apart from that, this arc also means the start of the first phase of Geto's plan to eliminate Hiratsuka so she can't participate in Shibuya. Starting from here, the foundation of the changes from the canon story will be laid. The butterfly effect after Haruno decided to cross over to the jujutsu world will also bring changes to the Oregairu verse.
Also, if you're asking why I used Nanako as the villain in this arc, I found her interesting. Her cursed technique related to smartphones and photos is very unique. Her background as Geto's adopted daughter makes me think that it could balance out the other characters' backgrounds under Satoru's protection. I'm not saying she'll be as strong as Yuta or Hachiman, but I'm just saying that her background might be interesting to exploit further.
That's all from me. Please support me by subscribing me to "patre0n.-com-/-akadaka" (please replace "0" to "o", and remove the "-".) I won't force you and I'm still continuing the story, although you don't subscribe to me. But it'll help me a lot. Anyway, see you and stay safe.
You can find chapters 32, 33, 34, 35, and 36 on my patre0n account.
