Thoughts

Ch. 3

Bozes could only deeply sigh.

The reconnaissance team that was sent out caused a big stir on this world. Although it was not in the best interest of the Dominion to be diving head first, it yielded quite a bit of unexpected fruit.

One of which was extracting information from a hostile individual. From it, they learned quite a bit about this planet in one go.

The world was called Elysia. It's history was particularly inconvenient for a lack of better words. Like them, there were quite a few civilizations that had been summoned to this world. Each one at different stages in technological development. There was a lot of details to go over. But to be frank about it, it was one big chaotic mess as this planet was an amalgamation of so many different things. Though oddly enough, the interference their instruments detected in the beginning seemed to be acting as a planet wide telepathic translator allowing any civilization who ends up here to understand each other which further deepened the mystery of this world.

To many fields of research like anthropology and archaeology, this was a wet dream come true. Once this information came out she was already getting petitions from groups who wanted to begin their study of this world to which she flatly refused due to lack of resources.

But from a political view, this was a convoluted nightmare based on current intel. Aside from trying to navigate the terrestrial issues, from an extraterrestrial standpoint, they were in uncharted territory in regards to rules of first contact. Understanding the brief history, this was a gray line. The invading hostile civilizations would warrant intervention in regards to the charter. But at the same time, they were not here of their choice. Even getting advice from the Terrans who were assigned to council her and the Protoss who had more experience with galactic affairs weren't sure how to treat this matter since this scenario was an unheard of even in one's wildest imaginations.

Thus Bozes had the honor as the first person in Dominion history to deal with this as she then sighed again.

Done reading for now as she closed the holographic windows, she went to her intercom. "Let him in". Standing before her desk now was special agent sergeant Jin as he stood at attention. Taking a calming breath, "do you know why you're here?"

"No need for this pretense madam governor" said Jin. "Let's skip to how you want to judge the situation".

Bozes stiffened at his words. Although she held the rank of planetary governor, Jin was a special agent. The Dominion was a galaxy spanning empire to which delegation and compartmentalization was necessary to manage it all. But in the event of emergency situations, special agents like Jin had direct authority as bestowed by emperor Valerian Mengsk. Thus Dominion adjutants would give them authority override allowing them access to whatever they needed to fix the situation at hand in order to cut through a slow moving bureaucracy.

With the predicament they were in, the young dark elf could easily use his status to take full control to do as he sees fit.

However Bozes knew him well enough that he would never do that based on his character. But it didn't stop her from feeling slightly intimidated that he had the power to do it.

Collecting herself, "although you broke regulation by intervening in terrestrial affairs, I cannot deny that your actions have brought about tremendous merit. Aside from the intel you brought back, it put us in a strong positive position with the Qua-Toyne principality as we are in the middle of negotiations. But nevertheless, you did break regulations. Yet seeing the situation we are in, we don't have the luxury of sidelining you either. So as punishment, you will be confined to your quarters on house arrest for one week".

"I understand madam governor" nodded Jin. He understood the consequences to his actions could lead to more insubordinate behavior which was the last thing they needed right now. Hence it was for the best he set an example and take responsibility. If anything this was at worse a slap on the hand so he didn't mind it. "I'll let myself out now".

"Jin . . . ."

"Hmm?"

"Speaking off the record . . . ." said Bozes as her heart was still that of a knight, "you did a good job out there".

Giving a grin, he left.

~ Qua-Toyne~ (A few days earlier)

The principality was in an uproar as they were trying to process all the events that had happened. The council was having an emergency meeting as they learned Louria had invaded with a large force as Gim had fallen.

But soon after a new messenger came in on the fastest wyvern they had. Updating them on the situation, soldiers from an unknown army repelled Louria's forces saving Gim which sent the council into another round of disarray.

"Who are they?! How did this happen?!"

"Clearly they want something from us!"

"What do we know about them?!"

"Everyone settle down" said Kanata the prime minister. Turning towards the messenger, "please start from the beginning with what happened".

Relaying everything, it was as they previously heard. Louria had all but conquered Gim as they were completely at their mercy. As they were ravaging the city, that's when they came.

Giant metal dragons as they suddenly appeared from the sky as they shot lightening magic in all directions.

There soldiers then dropped from them. Though they were few, they were overwhelmingly strong wielding swords and magic as Louria's army were almost helpless before them.

Even their healing abilities were unlike anything they've seen as they saved people who by their sense was beyond helping.

Calmly processing this information, "what of them now?"

"They wish to set up diplomatic ties with us" as this news caused another stir. It was incredibly unusual. After everything they did, it should have been the exact opposite. They've been aware of Louria's intentions for a while now through their spy network. Hence they've been desperate in looking for allies. Yet this mysterious group approached them first? Even saved a city at cost to themselves. From what they know of them so far, they were clearly stronger then Louria. They could have easily taken what they wanted. However they chose to approach them in a humble way.

Nodding his head while giving a small smile, "then let us know more about our potential new friends".

~ Qua-Toyne ~

Once the meeting was set up, they wanted to put their best foot forward with their highest representation.

Yagou as the head of foreign affair would be dealing with this personally as Hanki who was originally part of military affairs would serve as his support. Furthermore, the Dominion as they called themselves, requested that a representative from Quila kingdom would be present as well.

On the appointed time, they arrived on one of their metal dragons as it landed in the wyvern airfield. Exiting was a mixed group consisting of humans and demi-humans. Some were clearly diplomats of sorts and others were soldiers who were there to guard them. Based on first impressions, things were looking good so far.

"Greetings, I am Diabo as I will be in your care for the time being as I will be serving as a representative".

"A pleasure to meet you all as well" added in Doug the volraden. "Let us have a fruitful relationship together" as others in the group gave their greetings.

Once introductions were done they continued their discussion in the meeting room. After some deliberation, Yagou was astounded at the deal they were proposing.

In exchange for commodities like food, the Dominion had offered not only military protection but also technological development improving their logistics and daily life to a scale they could only dream of. Even Quila's representative was gaping at the favorable deals as it would significantly improve their kingdom's quality of life at the proposed infrastructures that would be implemented from the unknown mines and crude oil they possessed.

Of course Yagou did subtly try to suggest military technology to be added only to be flatly shot down which was understandable.

But given time to think this through, all of this just sounded too good to be true with how lopsided the deal was. Was there some ulterior motive? Was this some sort of bloodless invasion?

Sensing his thoughts, "there is still time" said Doug. "Would you like to visit Idunn? We can easily make the arrangements for you to visit to see our country with your own eyes".

Wanting or rather needing to see what kind of place this was, Yagou agreed to ease the tension in his heart as he wanted to believe these people were on the level.

Once reports were filed and notifications were sent, Qua-Toyne and Quila's ambassadors were ready to journey on the Dominion's metal dragon. From what they could see, the distance was vast yet they were moving unbelievably fast. How were they able to achieve such speeds? Why did they hardly feel any movement in travel? Of course they tried to explain it. However all they heard were words that went completely over their heads.

But upon arriving, nothing could prepare them for what they saw as all their senses were overwhelmed.

Endless towers of metal and stone.

A beautiful aesthetic balance between civilization and nature as giant trees had been grown around.

Flying carriages as they transported people place to place.

A bustling metropolis as everyone was constantly on the move as humans and demi-humans were perfectly in harmony.

It was unbelievable as none of them could possibly dream about such a place. Yet the Dominion was willing to share some of this with them? Although Yagou knew he needed to be professional about this, in his heart the deal had pretty much signed itself.

~ Elysia ~

After a few rounds of discussion, the deal was set. A lot of work now needed to be done.

Dominion engineers and equipment were then dispatched to both kingdoms to start their work as trains, factories, and other facilities needed to be built. To assist them at their jobs were commercially available industrial grade nano fabricators that were originally used to build Idunn.

The technology had advanced far enough that they could practically build entire skyscrapers on their own given that the materials and power requirements are met. However like most technology, it was a matter of time and cost efficiency in relation to how precise and complex the build needed to be. Hence workers will always be needed.

But in the event of any catastrophe, the tech now allowed them to bounce back faster. Even S.C.V.s were equipped with them cutting building and repairs to a fraction of the time.

Within days, many of these core infrastructures would be up and running.

Aside from business transactions, the Dominion also encouraged a cultural exchange to deepen their relationship with the two respective kingdoms. As discussed with the many higher ups, this was a long term investment to maintain positive relationships as they had no idea how long they might be stuck on Elysia if not the real possibility of forever. Hence it was the best idea to start making friends.

The first group to journey to Idunn were a mix of people curious about the new country who had just recently become their neighbor.

But like the ambassadors before them, they weren't prepared for the grand spectacle they were in for. The experience was stimulating as there was so much they wanted to do but such little time as they couldn't wait for tomorrow. Food, culture, entertainment, everyday was a new adventure.

Housed in one of the apartments was Moizi's wife and daughter Kisama and Ore. Although he will miss not being with them, but so long as the Louria threat remained then what better place to keep them safe but there. Having been there for a few days now Kisama couldn't believe this was how they lived. So many convenient tools that made daily life so easy. You'd think they were living like high class nobility.

But for Kisama herself, she had a bit on her mind. But hearing the door open, she turned to see her daughter as she was all smiles.

"Mama! I have so much I want to tell you today!"

Kisama couldn't help but smile as Ore talked endlessly about many things. Although it was a culture exchange, for children, they were invited to go to school. A luxury that was pretty rare in itself. For she was worried that they would have trouble fitting in. But those concerns were quickly swept aside with how inviting and friendly everyone around them were.

Now the only thing that was missing was her husband. Anxiety would have eaten at her knowing her husband was still at Gim protecting the border. But thanks to the graciousness of the Dominion, she and their daughter was able to talk to him everyday through one of their magical communication devices called a holo-phone. Originally it was set up to maintain a direct communication line with the border to the rest of them. But thankfully the soldiers stationed there were allowed to make private calls to whoever had a connected line.

Although she understood he had a duty to fulfill, she still hoped the conflict with Louria would end so that they could be a family again.

~ Quila ~

Arpeggio was grumbling as she was in a foul mood.

Although she understood, all key resources were now being rationed and diverted to other projects to insure the functionality of Idunn. That included all research projects. Hers included as they've been shelved for the time being.

With the cancellation also meant shifting personnel around.

With her background in geology, she along with others were shipped to Quila to oversee the projects there.

Of course they were being provided plenty of amenities for their temporary stay. Bio tech trees would be set up within the barren lands for both aesthetics and functionality.

Once everything was done, they would then instruct the natives on how to work the equipment as trades could then be properly conducted.

Frankly speaking they could have easily taken advantage of them. Since they had no idea what half this stuff was or it's inherent value it would've been too easy to pay them next to nothing for it. However they had to think long term. Thus creating a positive cooperative relationship would nip any future potential problem from ever cropping up.

But from what they've mined in terms of ores, minerals, and crude oil, Arpeggio could only sigh.

They've found several rich veins of useful metals like iron and copper. Even clusters of crystalline formations of varying compositions. The crude oil was easy enough to harvest. However if this was the old her decades ago before she joined the Dominion, she'd be jumping for joy. Discovering gold and diamonds among the survey, she'd be able to live off that kind of wealth right up to her death. But after seeing the bigger universe at large, these elements were painfully inferior in comparison to minerals and vespene gas in which the three great civilizations of the Koprulu sector used to fuel their technology and advancement.

Of course they still had plenty of working Dominion technology on Idunn. But as discussed by the higher ups, their best stuff was to remain on the main land to protect their borders still further notice. It wasn't like they couldn't work with these materials. But with inferior alloys, it also meant a downgrade to their current technology.

Weaker armors.

Less efficient power distribution systems.

Needing to build bigger and heavier to compensate.

Thus innovation was now required. Though thankfully they didn't need to start from nothing as the adjutants held the entire compendium of Terran knowledge including shelved or otherwise abandoned research. Though like a lot of them, things get abandoned if they are deemed a dead end or something better shows up. So old ideas were now going to get revisited as they would be combined with what they know now.

Needing to focus on a new goal, Arpeggio had a few compositions she wanted to test out once she gets back to her lab.

~ Idunn ~

Getting the estimated import on raw materials that will be shipped to Idunn, things were looking up. With more breathing room to work with they now needed to plan their next course of action.

Namely, what to do with the Louria threat as they presented themselves as the most immediate problem.

There were other nations that they had to keep an eye on. But for the time being they would need to be shifted to the back burner till their situation was more stable.

During their work in Qua-Toyne and Quila as well as setting up facilities in Idunn for processing, ghost agents had been dispatched to Louria to sleuth out what their next move was going to be. Although their army was repelled at Gim, they still haven't given up on their invasion.

They were still in the preparing stages. But from their report roughly a fleet of four thousand ships composing of fifty thousand soldiers including squadrons of wyvern riders were going to attack Maihark, a port city in Qua-Toyne that would have a direct shot at their capital. Furthermore the attack was imminent.

With those involved, another group meeting was quickly set up as Qua-Toyne shared what information they had while the Dominion planned and went through their options.

But as this back and forth went, Bozes had a bit on her mind as she listened to all this.

She had a lot of time to reevaluate her life ever since she joined the Dominion. Although it started off as a game among girls of nobility, it soon evolved into something so much more. They were taught in the principles of a knight as they walked the path of honor and duty. But with the time she had looking back on her life during her younger years, she felt she had betrayed what knights were supposed to stand for. Specifically in regards to demi-humans.

So much suffering and death inflicted on them by the old Saderan empire. Although at the time she didn't hate them yet she didn't pay them much mind either. For her indifference, so much could have been avoided had she cared.

Now here she was again. Louria being a mirror image of what Sadera use to be not caring who they killed or what they destroyed all in the name of their glory. Although she cannot apologize enough for her past self, there was things she can do now.

Their factories were not yet up and running. But they still had some strength to spare to fight off Louria as well as the fact that the dwarfs were begging to have some of their tech be allowed on the field.

With a course of action set, Bozes understood that righteousness was on their side. But as rules set by the Dominion, she will at least try to be diplomatic with them. If that fails then they shall have their war.

To be continued . . . .

Author's notes: Still in the piloting phase if I will continue the story or not. But anyways here are some commentary notes.

For the special agent role, it makes the most sense to me for delegation on a galactic scale. The Dominion's military force can't be everywhere to maintain the peace in it's territory. I'd imagine that just to get anything done requires quite a bureaucratic process since we're talking about interstellar distances in which a lot needs to go into logistics to move things around regardless of how advanced the technology gets. Thus such a role would make the most sense in order to resolve critical situations in a timely manner rather then waiting for things to go wrong in the mean time just to get the paper work through.

Industrial sized nano fabricators just seemed like a no brainer to the kind of tech the Terrans would eventually come to develop. They already had them installed on Ravens to build support equipment for front line forces. So it would make sense how the tech would evolve over the years as it gets integrated for civilian use. Just think of it as a giant 3D printer that can work with any material. But like a modern 3D printer depending on the size and detail of the build will dictate time and energy requirements. Thus the need for on sight workers to not over complicate the job as they can handle some of the finer detail or assembly.

This was not really shown much in the manga versus the light novel. But Quila kingdom was quite destitute. Thus many immigrants would go to Qua-Toyne in search of opportunity sending whatever they can. Understanding their situation, Qua-Toyne gives quite a bit of preferential treatment to keep Quila afloat. However Quila was sitting on a gold mine per say with not just crude oil but also veins of minerals or ores that they didn't understand the value of or even an ability to mine it. Setting up bio tech trees, it should subtly terraform the land making life there more comfortable.

As suggested by a few folks, culture exchange was always on the table. But it will take a while for it to fully take off. But for the time being it's mostly culture shock with the natives reacting to how advanced the technology the Dominion possess is.

But as noted above, this is my attempt to slightly nerf the Dominion's tech. However don't get me wrong. Their tech level will still easily destroy most if not all the civilizations of Elysia. But in this case enemy weapons can represent an actual threat to them if they get careless.

Lastly is the case of Bozes. I'd like to think after having so many years to process how her life has been she would come to have regrets. It would be similar to the case of Pina after having time to reflect on her actions in regards to demi-humans. But in relation to Pina, I felt that Bozes took the knight thing more seriously. Thus the guilt of her actions or inaction would hit her much harder. Hence why she wants to prove her justice now with defending Qua-Toyne against Louria.

If there are any questions or concerns feel free to ask as I will try to answer them.

So thank you for reading as I further extend my gratitude if you can review as well.
