"You've come back. I didn't think you ever would," Alice says. The gravel under my shoes crunches through my silence. I stand by her and we watch the horizon, the grave just as it was; there is no change. I was here last week. She was too, and said words of utter destruction. I left heartbroken, and just as quickly, I was filled with wonder at the subliminal message I decoded in the car with Jess.
I waited all week to come back here and get more details. If she'll allow.
… If she caves.
"I don't know where you live. I hoped you'd be here," I say.
She turns her head to me. "I wonder what you'd ever need from me. I don't owe you a thing," she says.
I silently seethe. This, I realize, will be like pulling teeth.
