As Maya and Warren carefully maneuvered the aid car into the emergency room entrance, they focused on ensuring the pregnant patient was as comfortable and secure as possible. The woman, who had been in a serious car accident, was visibly distressed but conscious.
Maya and Warren swiftly transferred the patient onto a stretcher, their movements practiced and efficient. As they wheeled her into the emergency room, they spotted Carina across the room, tending to another case. Her brown hair was neatly tied back, and her white coat contrasted sharply against the bustling backdrop of the ER.
Carina's eyes met Maya's, and she immediately recognized the gravity of the situation. "Maya!" she called out, moving towards them with a concerned expression.
"We've got a pregnant woman here who was in a car accident," Maya explained quickly. "She's in a lot of pain, and we're worried about both her and the baby."
Carina nodded, her professional demeanor taking over. "Let me take a look. Thank you for bringing her in."
As Carina began to examine the patient, Maya and Warren stepped back, giving her space to work. Carina's attention was focused and precise as she assessed the woman's condition, her expertise evident in every movement.
"Is there anything else I should know?" Carina asked, glancing up from her work.
Maya shook her head. "Just that she's been in pain for a while. We're worried about both her and the baby."
Carina gave a reassuring nod. "I'll make sure she gets the care she needs. Thank you for your quick response."
As Maya and Warren finished their tasks and were about to head back to the aid car, Carina, having just wrapped up with the pregnant patient, hurried over to them. Her white coat billowed slightly as she moved swiftly through the crowded ER.
"Maya!" Carina called out, her voice carrying a note of genuine enthusiasm. "I wanted to catch you before you left."
Maya turned, a smile forming on her face as she saw Carina approaching. "Hi, Carina. What's up?"
Carina's hazel eyes sparkled with appreciation. "I just wanted to thank you again for the amazing firehouse tour the other day. Alex had such a great time. He's been talking about it non-stop since."
Maya chuckled, feeling pleased. "I'm glad he enjoyed it. It was fun showing him around. He's such a great kid."
Carina nodded enthusiastically. "He's been great, actually. He's been showing off his new fire truck to everyone at preschool. And you know what? He's been getting all good marks on his behavior this week. He's been really excited to tell everyone about his 'favorite firefighter.'"
Maya's smile widened at the compliment. "That's fantastic to hear. He's such a sweet kid."
Carina's eyes softened as she spoke. "It's been a bit of a challenge for him to make friends at school. But I think your visit to the firehouse made a big difference. He's been much more confident since then."
Maya felt a sense of warmth at Carina's words. "I'm really happy to hear that. It sounds like he's doing better."
As Maya wrapped up her conversation with Carina, the familiar crackle of the radio interrupted their exchange.
"Maya, Warren, we have a new call. There's been a multiple-car accident on the freeway. You're needed on scene ASAP," the voice over the radio announced.
Maya's expression shifted to one of focus as she turned to Carina. "I'm sorry, Carina, but we have to head out. Duty calls."
Carina nodded understandingly. "Of course. Be safe out there"
As Maya and Warren headed towards their aid car, Warren couldn't help but tease her. "So, Maya, are you and Dr. DeLuca getting serious or just enjoying the occasional firehouse tour?"
Maya chuckled, shaking her head. "We're just friends, Warren. Nothing serious."
Warren raised an eyebrow playfully. "Just friends, huh? Sure seems like you're going out of your way to spend time with her and her kid."
Maya rolled her eyes with a smile. "Well, Alex is a great kid, and Carina's nice. I enjoy spending time with them, but it's really just as friends."
Warren gave her a knowing look. "Alright, alright. Just don't forget, I'm here for any gossip if things change."
Maya laughed, appreciating the light-heartedness. "I'll keep that in mind. Now, let's get to this call."
The next scene was wrapped up quickly with the entire Station retuning back safely to the Fire House. The rest of their evening was quiet and they were able to catch up on the backlogged paperwork.
Maya's shift ended the next morning early and she headed home to relax and recharge for the next shift. Running was relaxing for Maya so she decided to get a run in on this particularly beautiful day.
Maya laced up her running shoes and stepped out into the crisp, clear morning air. The sun was shining brightly, and a gentle breeze rustled the leaves as she began her run. The city was waking up around her, and the warmth of the sun on her face felt invigorating.
She set a steady pace, letting her thoughts drift as her feet pounded rhythmically against the pavement. The nice weather was a welcome change, and she enjoyed the way the sun illuminated the path ahead of her. The scenery was a pleasant distraction, with trees and flowers in full bloom, creating a vibrant backdrop for her run.
As she passed familiar landmarks and felt the endorphins kicking in, Maya's mind wandered to the recent interactions with Carina and Alex. The memory of their day together made her smile, and she found herself looking forward to the next time she'd see them.
Running felt like a perfect escape, a chance to clear her head and recharge. She focused on her breathing and the rhythm of her steps, savoring the peaceful solitude of her run. The day was shaping up to be a good one, and she was ready to embrace whatever came next.
As Maya rounded a familiar bend in the park, her phone buzzed with a new text. She slowed her pace to check the message from Carina:
"Hi Maya! Just wanted to let you know Alex got all good marks on his behavior at preschool this week! I asked him what he wanted to do to celebrate, and he said he wanted to watch the new Disney movie Planes: Fire and Rescue with you, his favorite firefighter. I know you're probably very busy, so no pressure if you can't make it. But if you do decide to join us, I'm planning to cook my famous lasagna for dinner. "
Maya's heart warmed at the message, and she couldn't help but smile. The thought of spending time with Alex and enjoying Carina's cooking was too tempting to pass up. She quickly typed a response:
"Hi Carina! That sounds wonderful. I just so happen to be off today and I'd love to join you and Alex for the movie and the lasagna! What time should I come over? "
She sent the message and continued her run, feeling a renewed sense of excitement. The prospect of a cozy movie night with a delicious meal was a delightful way to spend her evening, and she was looking forward to it.
Carina's response came through swiftly:
"Great! We're planning to start the movie around 6 PM. I'll send you the address. Can't wait to see you!"
She followed up with the address, and Maya saved it to her phone. As she finished her run, her thoughts were already on the evening ahead.
Maya stood in front of the mirror, eyeing her reflection critically. She had chosen a casual yet polished outfit: a pair of well-fitted jeans, a crisp white button-up shirt, and a lightweight cardigan. It was comfortable and appropriate for a relaxed evening, but she wanted to make sure it was just right for the occasion.
She adjusted the cardigan, smoothing it down and checking how it looked. The outfit felt good, but she wondered if it was too casual or if she should add a little more flair. She decided against overthinking it; the most important thing was that she felt comfortable and confident.
Maya finished her look with a quick brush of her hair and a dab of her favorite subtle perfume. She gave herself one last look in the mirror and smiled. The evening was about spending time with Alex and Carina, and she wanted to be herself, enjoying the simplicity of their plans.
With a deep breath and a final glance, she grabbed her keys and headed out, excited for the evening ahead and eager to make a good impression.
Maya arrived at Carina's apartment and took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves. She glanced at her outfit one last time, making sure everything was in place. Satisfied, she walked up to the door and gave it a firm knock.
A moment later, the door swung open to reveal Carina, who greeted her with a bright smile. Carina was dressed casually but elegantly, her hair slightly tousled from the day.
"Hi, Maya!" Carina said warmly. "Come on in. Alex is just finishing up his snack before we start the movie."
"Hi, Carina," Maya replied with a smile as she stepped inside. "Thanks for having me over."
"Of course!" Carina said, stepping aside to let Maya enter. "I'm glad you could make it. It's been a busy week, and Alex has been so excited about tonight."
As Maya stepped into the cozy apartment, the delicious aroma of lasagna filled the air, making her stomach growl in anticipation. Carina led her into the living room, where Alex was sitting on the couch with his toy fire truck, eagerly waiting for Maya.
"Hi, Alex," Maya said, crouching down to his level. "Ready for movie night?"
Alex's face lit up with a big smile. "Yeah! I'm going to watch it with my favorite firefighter!"
Maya chuckled, feeling her heart warm at Alex's enthusiasm. "I'm excited too. And I'm looking forward to trying your Momma's famous lasagna."
Carina blushed slightly and chuckled. "I hope it lives up to the hype. Why don't you make yourself comfortable? I'll just finish up in the kitchen."
As Maya settled down next to Alex on the couch, he eagerly turned to her, his little eyes shining with excitement.
"Guess what, Maya?" Alex began, his voice brimming with enthusiasm. "Momma's lasagna is the bestest! It's got lots of cheese, and noodles, and meat, and sauce. She makes it super yummy. It's my favorite, and I always get extra when she makes it!"
Maya smiled, her heart warmed by Alex's excitement. "That sounds amazing, Alex. I can't wait to try it. You must be very lucky to have such a great cook for a mom."
Alex nodded vigorously. "Yep! And she makes it with love, too. That's what makes it so yummy. And she lets me help sometimes, but I don't get to do much 'cause it's really hot and messy."
Maya laughed softly. "I bet it's fun to help, even if it's a little messy. I'm sure it's worth it for such delicious lasagna."
Alex's face beamed with pride. "Yeah! And after dinner, we can have ice cream sometimes, but only if we're good. Do you like ice cream?"
"I do like ice cream," Maya said with a grin. "But I'm really looking forward to this lasagna first."
"Good!" Alex said, then leaned closer, whispering conspiratorially, "Momma says she makes it special for you 'cause you're a good friend."
Maya's smile widened at Alex's words. "Well, I'm very honored. I'm sure it's going to be delicious. Thanks for telling me all about it, Alex."
Alex nodded, his little face glowing with pride. "You're welcome! Now, let's get ready for the movie! Momma said it's almost time to start."
As Alex bounced with excitement, Maya couldn't help but feel grateful for this chance to spend time with Carina and her son.
Alex's excitement about the movie night continued. He leaned closer to Maya, his small hands gesturing animatedly.
"Do you know about Planes?" Alex asked eagerly. "It's like Cars, but with airplanes! They go zoom-zoom in the sky, and there's this big race with lots of flying and cool tricks. It's so awesome!"
Maya nodded, smiling at Alex's enthusiasm. "I've heard of Planes. It sounds like a lot of fun. I've seen Cars before, too. It's about race cars and their adventures, right?"
Alex's eyes widened with excitement. "Yes, yes! Cars is super cool, too! Lightning McQueen is the best! And Mater is so funny. Do you have a favorite character from Cars?"
Maya thought for a moment. "I think I like Lightning McQueen a lot. He's fast and always tries his best. How about you? Who's your favorite?"
Alex's face lit up. "I like Mater! He's so silly and nice. And he helps his friends a lot. But I also like Dusty Crophopper from Planes because he's a firefighter like you! He helps people, too."
Maya chuckled, touched by Alex's comparison. "That's a great choice. Dusty is really brave. And it's nice to know you think of me when you watch him."
Alex nodded seriously. "Yep! And I want to be a firefighter like you when I grow up. But right now, I'm just a good helper for Momma. And I'm learning all about fire trucks and planes!"
Maya smiled warmly, impressed by Alex's ambition. "That's fantastic, Alex. You'll make a great firefighter one day. For now, I'm glad we get to enjoy the movie together."
As Carina called them to dinner, Maya followed Alex into the kitchen, her senses immediately overwhelmed by the mouthwatering aromas wafting through the air. The kitchen was warm and inviting, filled with the rich, savory scents of garlic, herbs, and bubbling cheese.
Alex eagerly led the way, his excitement palpable as he bounded toward the dining table, which was set with a vibrant array of dishes. Carina had outdone herself, the centerpiece being a steaming, golden-brown lasagna that looked as delicious as it smelled.
Carina, swearing a baggy t-shirt and knit shorts, looked up with a welcoming smile. "I hope you're hungry, Maya. I've been working on this lasagna all day."
Maya's mouth watered as she took in the sight of the meal. "It smells incredible, Carina. I can't wait to try it."
Alex climbed into his chair, practically bouncing with anticipation. "Momma makes the best lasagna ever! You're gonna love it, Maya!"
Carina served up generous portions, her movements graceful and practiced as she dished out the lasagna. Maya took her seat, her gaze occasionally drifting to Carina, who looked radiant in her element.
As they began to eat, Maya couldn't help but compliment Carina again. "This really is amazing. You've clearly got a talent for cooking."
Carina blushed slightly, clearly pleased. "Thank you, Maya. It's one of my favorite things to do. I'm glad you're enjoying it."
Alex eagerly dug into his plate, his eyes lighting up with every bite. "See, Maya? I told you it was the best!"
Maya laughed, taking another forkful. "You were right, Alex. This is definitely some of the best lasagna I've ever had."
Carina smiled and leaned back slightly, her eyes twinkling with a hint of pride. "You know, after all, I am Italian," she said with a playful grin. "I really hope this lasagna does my Nonna proud."
Maya looked at Carina, genuinely impressed. "I'm sure it would. It tastes like it's made with a lot of love and tradition."
Carina's smile widened. "Thank you, Maya. It means a lot to hear that. My Nonna was an amazing cook, and I always strive to keep those family traditions alive."
Alex, who had been listening intently, nodded sagely. "Momma makes the best food because she learned from her Nonna. And now she's teaching me how to cook, too!"
Maya's heart warmed at the sight of the close bond between Carina and Alex. "It's really wonderful how you're keeping those traditions going. It must be very special for both of you."
Carina's eyes softened as she looked at Maya. "It is. And it's nice to be able to share it with someone new, especially someone who appreciates it."
As they settled into their meal, Alex excitedly chattered away about his day at preschool. "I made new friends, Maya! There's Emma and Lucas. Emma shared her crayons with me, and Lucas and I played with the blocks. We built a big tower!"
Carina beamed with pride as she listened. "I'm so proud of you, Alex. It sounds like you're making great friends and having a wonderful time at school."
Alex grinned up at his mom. "And I told them all about the fire truck tour with Maya! They think fire trucks are cool too."
Maya laughed softly, charmed by Alex's enthusiasm. "That's awesome, Alex. I'm really glad you're making friends and having fun."
Carina's eyes met Maya's, and she gave a small, appreciative nod. "Thank you for making Alex's day so special. It means a lot to us."
Maya smiled warmly. "It was my pleasure. I've really enjoyed getting to know you both."
As they finished their meal and settled back with a relaxed atmosphere, Carina leaned slightly toward Maya, her expression thoughtful. "You know," she began, "it's been a bit of a transition for Alex. Back in Italy, he was surrounded by his cousins and friends. They'd all play together, and he had a close-knit group. But since we moved here, he hasn't really had anyone to connect with, and it's been a bit hard for him."
Maya listened intently, nodding in understanding. "I can imagine how challenging that must be for him. Moving to a new place and leaving behind friends and family isn't easy."
Carina sighed softly but smiled as she looked at Alex, who was busy finishing his dessert. "It's tough. But seeing him making new friends and starting to feel more comfortable at school is really encouraging. It gives me hope that he's adjusting well."
Maya reached out and touched Carina's hand gently. "He seems to be doing great. And it sounds like he's found some good friends already."
As Alex polished off his last bite of lasagna and looked up at Maya and Carina with wide, eager eyes, he bounced in his seat. "Can we watch the movie now? Please, Momma?"
Carina chuckled and gave Maya a friendly glance. "Well, I think Alex is ready to get the movie started. He's been looking forward to this all day."
Maya smiled warmly. "I think that sounds like a great idea. I'm excited to see what all the fuss is about with this movie."
Carina stood up and wiped her hands on a kitchen towel. "Alright then, let's get everything set up. Maya, you're more than welcome to make yourself comfortable on the couch."
Alex darted into the living room, his little feet pattering on the floor, and immediately started arranging his toys in front of the TV. Carina followed behind, making sure everything was ready for the movie. Maya joined them, taking a seat on the couch as Alex clambered up beside her, his eyes glued to the screen.
Carina settled into a chair next to them, her gaze shifting between the TV and Maya with a smile. "I hope you enjoy it. It's one of Alex's favorites."
As the opening credits began to roll, Alex turned to Maya with an excited grin. "This movie is awesome! You're gonna love it!"
Maya laughed and nodded, her heart warmed by Alex's enthusiasm. "I'm sure I will."
As the credits rolled and the final scenes of "Planes: Fire and Rescue" faded from the screen, Alex turned to Maya with bright, inquisitive eyes. "What was your favorite part, Maya?"
Maya chuckled, glancing down at the excited little boy beside her. "Hmm, let me think. I really liked the part where the planes worked together to save the day. It was so cool to see everyone helping each other out."
Alex nodded enthusiastically, clearly pleased with Maya's answer. "Yeah! That part was awesome! I like when everyone works together too."
Carina smiled at the interaction, her gaze shifting between Maya and Alex. "He's been talking about that scene all week. It's nice to see he's not the only one who thinks it's great."
Maya looked over at Carina, her eyes softening. "It really is a great message. I'm glad I got to see it with you both."
Carina nodded, clearly touched. "I'm glad you could join us. It means a lot to Alex and to me."
Alex, still bubbling with energy, bounced slightly in his seat. "What about you, Momma? What was your favorite part?"
Carina laughed softly, shaking her head. "Oh, I think I enjoyed the same part Maya did. The teamwork is really special."
Carina glanced at the clock and then down at Alex, who was still bubbling with energy. "Alright, sweetie, it's almost bedtime. Time to get into your pajamas."
Alex's face fell, and he looked up at Carina with wide, pleading eyes. "But Momma, I want to play with Maya and my toys now that the movie is over!"
Carina crouched down to Alex's level, her expression gentle but firm. "I know you're having fun, Alex, but it's important to get a good night's sleep so you can have more energy for tomorrow. Maya will be here another time to play with you, okay?"
Alex pouted, his lower lip quivering slightly. "But I want to play now."
Maya, watching the exchange, stepped in with a reassuring smile. "How about this, Alex? Why don't you get into your pajamas, and then I can help you pick out a bedtime story to read? I'd love to hear more about your favorite stories."
Alex's face brightened a little at the idea. "Really? You'll help me pick a story?"
"Of course," Maya said, giving him an encouraging nod. "And after that, maybe you can tell me all about your toys and what games you like to play with them."
Alex considered this for a moment, then nodded enthusiastically. "Okay, I'll get my pajamas on now!"
He bounded off to his room, leaving Maya and Carina alone for a moment. Carina looked at Maya, her eyes reflecting a mix of gratitude and warmth. "Thank you for that. It's been a bit of an adjustment for him, and he really does enjoy having someone to share his interests with."
Maya smiled, touched by Carina's words. "I'm happy to be here. I've enjoyed spending time with you both."
As Maya followed Alex to his room, Carina called after her, a gentle but firm tone in her voice. "Maya, you really don't have to help with Alex's bedtime routine. It's completely fine if you just relax in the living room."
Maya turned to look at Carina, a reassuring smile on her face. "I don't mind at all. I'm happy to be a part of it. Plus, it's nice to spend a bit more time with Alex."
Carina's eyes softened, touched by Maya's willingness to help. "Well, if you're sure. I really appreciate it. And as a thank you, once Alex is settled, I've got an excellent Italian red wine that I'd love to share with you."
Maya's eyes lit up at the mention of wine. "That sounds great. I'd love to."
Carina and Alex led Maya to Alex's bedroom, where the evening routine began. Alex's room was decorated with playful colors and filled with toys, a cozy little space that was clearly meant for comfort and fun.
Carina pointed to a small table by the bed where a stack of books was neatly arranged. "We usually start with a story," Carina explained. "Alex picks his favorite, and we read together."
Alex eagerly picked a book about a brave little firefighter and handed it to Maya. "This one!" he said with excitement.
Maya took the book and settled into a chair next to Alex's bed, while Carina stood nearby. As Maya began reading, Alex listened intently, snuggled under his blankets. Maya's voice was gentle and engaging, capturing Alex's attention with each page.
After the story, Carina guided Maya through the rest of the bedtime routine. "Next, we brush our teeth," she said, picking up a small toothbrush and a colorful toothpaste from the bathroom.
Alex followed the routine, brushing his teeth with Carina's guidance, and Maya joined in, making sure to follow the same careful steps. Alex was enthusiastic, showing Maya how he liked to brush in circles and how he could make funny faces while doing it.
With teeth brushed, it was time to put on pajamas. Carina helped Alex into his soft, dinosaur-themed pajamas, while Maya chatted with Alex about his day. Alex giggled and talked about his new friends at preschool, and Maya listened with genuine interest.
Finally, Carina showed Maya how they wind down before bed. "We usually have a few quiet moments," Carina said, "where we talk about the day or just relax. It helps Alex settle down."
Carina sat on the edge of Alex's bed, gently stroking his hair, while Maya joined in, chatting softly with Alex. After a few minutes, Alex's eyelids began to droop.
"Goodnight, Alex," Carina said softly, leaning in to kiss his forehead.
Maya followed suit, saying, "Goodnight, Alex. Sleep tight."
As Alex's breathing evened out into a peaceful rhythm, Carina and Maya quietly left the room, closing the door softly behind them.
Carina led Maya back downstairs to the kitchen, where the warmth and aroma of the lasagna still lingered. The kitchen was cozy and inviting, with soft lighting that made the space feel even more welcoming.
Carina reached for a bottle of rich Italian red wine from a cabinet and expertly uncorked it. "I hope you enjoy this," she said, pouring a glass for Maya and then one for herself. "It's one of my favorites."
Maya took the glass with a smile, appreciating both the gesture and the quality of the wine. "Thank you, Carina. It's really kind of you to offer."
Carina leaned against the counter, her gaze soft as she watched Maya. "I'm glad you could join us tonight. It's been wonderful having you here, especially with how well you got along with Alex."
Maya took a sip of the wine, savoring the rich, full flavor. "The evening's been great. Alex is such a charming kid, and the lasagna was amazing. You really outdid yourself."
Carina's cheeks flushed slightly with pleasure. "Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Cooking is one of the ways I feel connected to my family back in Italy."
Carina took a sip of her wine and smiled, her eyes reflecting a mix of nostalgia and fondness. "So, Maya, I've been meaning to tell you more about my family in Italy. They're really the reason I love cooking so much."
Maya leaned in, intrigued. "I'd love to hear more. What are they like?"
Carina's smile widened as she began to share. "Well, my family is quite large and very close-knit. My parents live in a small town in Tuscany, surrounded by vineyards and rolling hills. My father, Giovanni, is a retired chef. He ran a small restaurant that was known for its traditional dishes."
She paused for a moment, clearly fond of the memories. "My mother, Sofia, is an amazing baker. She makes the best pastries you could ever imagine. Our family gatherings always involved a lot of food, laughter, and stories. It's one of the things I miss the most about being here."
Maya nodded, captivated by Carina's descriptions. "It sounds like a wonderful place. And it must have been hard to leave all that behind."
Carina nodded, her expression thoughtful. "It was. Moving to Seattle was a big step, especially with Alex being so young. It's been a challenge to adjust, but we're starting to find our footing."
She took another sip of wine and continued, "One of the things I've been trying to do is recreate some of the recipes my parents taught me. It's a way to feel connected to home, even though we're so far away."
Maya smiled warmly, appreciating Carina's openness. "I can see how important that connection is. And you're doing a fantastic job. The lasagna was incredible."
Carina's eyes twinkled with gratitude. "Thank you, Maya. That means a lot to me. It's comforting to know that some things can still feel like home, even when we're miles away."
Maya took a thoughtful sip of her wine, then looked at Carina with curiosity. "So, why did you decide to move to Seattle, Carina? It sounds like you had a pretty established life in Italy."
Carina's gaze softened as she considered the question. "It was definitely a big decision," she began, her voice reflective. "I was offered the position of department head at Grey Sloan Memorial, which was an incredible opportunity for my career. The chance to lead a team and contribute to a renowned institution was something I couldn't pass up."
She paused, a hint of emotion in her eyes. "But it wasn't just about the job. I wanted to give Alex the best chance at a successful future. I knew that moving to a new city with more opportunities, and a world-class hospital, would be beneficial for both my career and for him."
Carina's expression grew more determined. "Alex deserves the best start in life I can provide, and this move was a part of that. It's been a challenge, of course, but I believe it will pay off in the long run."
Maya nodded, clearly impressed by Carina's dedication. "That's really admirable. It must have been hard to leave everything behind, but it sounds like you're doing everything you can to make it work."
Carina smiled, appreciating Maya's understanding. "Thank you. It has its difficulties, but moments like tonight make it all worth it. Meeting people like you and seeing Alex start to feel more at home hereāit's these little victories that keep me going."
Maya's curiosity was piqued, but she was sensitive to the boundaries Carina might have. "You don't have to answer if it's too personal," Maya began hesitantly, "but I'm curious about Alex's father. Is he still in Italy? Are you two close?"
Carina took a deep breath, her gaze shifting to the glass of wine in her hand. "I'll answer," she said softly, "but it's a bit complicated."
She looked up, meeting Maya's eyes with a mixture of sadness and resolve. "I was actually in a relationship with a woman when we decided to have a child. We agreed that I would carry the baby. However, when I was six months pregnant, my partner decided she no longer wanted to have a child and left me."
Carina's voice wavered slightly, but she continued. "It was incredibly difficult, and I had to navigate that journey on my own. I made the decision to move forward and focus on providing the best life I could for Alex."
Maya listened intently, her empathy evident. "I'm so sorry, Carina. That must have been incredibly tough."
Carina nodded, her expression reflecting both the weight of the past and the hope for the future. "It was, but Alex and I have managed to find our way. Moving to Seattle was a fresh start, and I'm grateful for the opportunities it's brought us."
Maya reached out, giving Carina's hand a supportive squeeze. "You're doing an amazing job. It's clear how much you care about Alex and how hard you've worked to make things better for him."
Carina's smile returned, touched by Maya's kindness. "Thank you, Maya. It means a lot to hear that."
Carina, still holding Maya's gaze, said with a slight chuckle, "I hope that liking women doesn't change your opinion of me."
Maya's eyes sparkled with amusement as she responded casually, "Well, I like women too, so I guess we're in good company."
Carina's smile widened, her relief palpable. "That's good to know," she said warmly. "It's nice to have someone who understands."
Maya raised her glass in a playful toast. "To finding common ground and being ourselves."
Carina clinked her glass with Maya's, appreciating the light-heartedness and the genuine connection they were building. "Here's to that," Carina agreed, feeling a renewed sense of comfort and ease in Maya's presence.
Carina listened intently as Maya spoke, her expression sympathetic. "I feel like I've been doing all the talking," Carina said, shifting the focus. "Tell me more about your family."
Maya sighed, her gaze drifting to the window before she met Carina's eyes again. "I'm not very close with my family. I have a younger brother named Mason, but that's about it. It's a long story, but after a pretty tough childhood, I decided for my own mental stability to cut ties with my mother and father."
Carina nodded, her empathy evident. "That sounds really challenging. I'm sorry you had to go through that."
Maya gave a small, appreciative smile. "Thanks. It's not something I talk about often, but it's a big part of why I've built the life I have now. I wanted to create something different for myself, away from the complications of my past."
Carina reached out, placing a comforting hand on Maya's. "It sounds like you've worked hard to make sure you're in a better place now. That's something to be proud of."
Maya's smile grew a little warmer. "I try. And it means a lot to me that you're listening."
Carina's eyes softened. "I'm glad you're sharing with me. It feels nice to get to know each other better."
Maya took a sip of her wine, savoring the rich flavor, and looked at Carina with a sincere smile. "I really enjoy spending time with you, Carina. It's been nice getting to know you and Alex better."
Carina returned the smile, her eyes reflecting warmth. "I'm glad to hear that. I've enjoyed it too. It's been a while since I've had such a pleasant evening."
Maya leaned back, feeling more relaxed. "I'm glad we could make this work. I was a bit nervous about the whole thing, but it's turned out to be a great night."
Carina laughed softly, shaking her head. "I'm happy you're here. It's been really nice. Alex has been talking about you all day, so I think he had a great time too."
Maya's smile widened. "I'm glad to hear that. I hope we can do this again sometime."
Carina nodded, her expression hopeful. "I'd like that. I'd really like that."
As Alex trudged down the stairs, his little face scrunched up in distress, Carina looked up with a sympathetic frown. "What's wrong, sweetheart?"
"I can't sleep," Alex whined, his voice trembling. "I want Maya to stay."
Maya's heart sank at the sight of Alex's tears. She crouched down to his level, giving him a reassuring smile. "Hey, Alex, I'm really glad we got to hang out today. But I need to go home now. I promise we'll get to see each other again soon, okay?"
Alex sniffled, his eyes brimming with tears. "Promise?"
"Promise," Maya said softly, reaching out to pat his shoulder gently. "And next time we see each other, we can play more games and have fun."
Carina stepped forward, her arms open to comfort Alex. "Come here, sweetie," she said in a soothing tone, lifting him up. "Let's get you back to bed. We'll have to plan another day to see Maya."
Alex clung to his mom, his sobs quieting as she cradled him in her arms. "But I want Maya to stay and play."
Maya's heart ached seeing Alex so upset. She looked at Carina, who gave her a tired but understanding smile. "I wish I could stay longer, Alex. But I have to head home. I promise we'll hang out again soon."
Carina gently rocked Alex, her voice a soft lullaby as she spoke to him in Italian. Maya couldn't understand the words, but the soothing cadence was clear. "You know, Alex, we'll have another fun day together soon. Let's be brave and get some rest tonight."
As Alex's cries began to subside, Carina looked over at Maya with a grateful smile. "Thank you for coming tonight. It really meant a lot to us, especially to Alex."
Maya nodded, feeling a lump in her throat. "It was really nice to spend time with both of you. I'm glad I could be here."
Carina stepped closer, pulling Maya into a warm hug. "Thank you again. I hope we see each other soon."
Maya hugged her back, feeling the genuine warmth in Carina's embrace. "Definitely. I've had a great time tonight. Let's plan something soon."
Carina's eyes softened as she looked at Maya. "I'd like that. Alex has really enjoyed having you around."
As Carina began to carry Alex back upstairs, she spoke softly to him in Italian, her voice a comforting murmur. Alex rested his head on her shoulder, gradually calming down.
Maya watched them go, feeling a mix of emotions. Carina looked back over her shoulder, giving Maya a final, appreciative smile. "Goodnight, Maya."
"Goodnight, Carina," Maya replied, waving as she headed for the door.
Carina glanced at Alex, who had already started to doze off, and then at Maya. "It's been a long day for all of us. I hope you get home safely."
Maya gave her a reassuring smile. "I will. And I look forward to our next get-together."
As she stepped outside, Maya's mind replayed the evening's events. She had enjoyed the time with Alex and Carina more than she had anticipated. The connection she felt with them was something she hadn't expected, and it left her with a hopeful feeling about what the future might bring.
Back inside, Carina gently placed Alex in bed and tucked him in. She looked down at him with a smile, brushing a stray lock of hair from his forehead. "Sweet dreams, Alex. Maya will come back soon."
Alex mumbled sleepily, "Goodnight, Maya."
Carina whispered softly, "Goodnight, sweetheart."
