A/N: Just a quick chapter with some recent events. I know it's short, but I figure writing something and posting it is better than trying for ages to add more things to make it longer. Also, sorry but it's lots of Caspian. haha
Wanting to find somewhere to rest before he checked on the patrols again, Caspian scanned the forest just past base, a hint of tiredness in his eyes. Hearing a stream in the distance, he started towards it, before pausing when he reached it and noticed someone was already sitting by it. The faerie was easy for Caspian to pick, with his splash of red hair, and he continued on, before hesitating, and looking back at him. Kellan stared at the stream, and his demeanour seemed almost sad, Caspian noticed.
"Thank you… for helping me," he said, his voice a little quiet, although Kellan still turned to look at him. The words were strange, and he could probably count the number of times he'd used them on one hand.
Kellan gave a small smile. He'd never expected to be thanked, and certainly not from Caspian. "You are welcome, of course. I'm just glad that I managed to use the correct antidotes."
Nodding, Caspian looked away, his eyes focusing on a rock that resisted the current of the stream. The water flowed past it, having to deviate from its path. It was a stubborn rock, he decided, and he liked the thought of it. "…Do you think everyone deserves to be saved?" he asked, after a long pause.
Frowning, Kellan sat up a little straighter, as he pondered his words. His neck felt bare without his usual necklace, as if something was missing. He did not mind the thought of Ethos keeping it though, finding it almost soothing. "Yes, I do. I would have helped you, even if you weren't a Hunt faerie. While everyone makes mistakes, everyone deserves a second chance, too. I like to think everyone is worthy of saving."
"You wouldn't understand," Caspian replied, darkly. "Of course you wouldn't. You're perfect."
Kellan recoiled in shock. "Perfect?" he repeated, staring at him. "I have no idea how you could call me that."
Caspian rolled his eyes. "You're the kind of person that everyone likes. You have morals and values and you're not plagued by problems. You're not-… you're not messed up."
Swallowing back a laugh in disbelief, Kellan straightened his cloak with his hand. "I have problems, just like everyone else. I'm not perfect, I'm far from it. Like people say, I can be far too soft and sensitive, for a Hunt faerie. Sometimes I cannot help my thoughts, sometimes I want more than I should, and sometimes I fail. No one is perfect," he emphasised, carefully.
Swallowing, Caspian sighed, making no effort to argue his point further. "… Right. I get it now," he said, and he glanced at him once, meeting his gaze with a hint of understanding in his eyes, before he started away, deciding to leave Kellan in peace.
Caspian's horse hadn't been far from his mind, on his return to the Hunt. As he reached the field were the horses grazed, he did not have to scan it for long, before Eculeus approached him. Caspian's silver eye lightened when he saw him, his dark thoughts disappearing, at least for a little bit.
Eculeus nuzzled him with his nose, and Caspian laughed, running his hand under the horse's neck, before resting his head against him for a moment. "I missed you too," he murmured. "I would always come back for you." The horse's gesture was a heartening one, as Caspian knew it was one of the horses' most vulnerable parts of their body, and by opening this up to him, it showed how comfortable the horse was with his presence.
Straightening, he moved towards the horse's side slowly, wanting to check how the cut was mending. He swore Leif would know about it, if it was infected, or it hadn't been cleaned properly. Eculeus shifted nervously on instinct as Caspian approached his wound, and Caspian opened up his mind to their bond, murmuring soothing things to him, for he knew what it felt like to be hurt and frightened. When Eculeus settled down, leaning against him slightly, Caspian ran his fingers lightly along his side, examining the injury carefully. To his relief, it had started to mend together, looking much better than before he'd left for the Seelie. The colouring was right too, and it didn't look infected. He had to give it to Leif – at least he was actually good at his job.
Resting a hand back near Eculeus's neck, there was a smile in his eyes. "I know you are as wild and free as I am," he said, quietly, and the horse's ears flicked towards him as he listened. "When you have recovered, we will ride for miles and miles, past the Hunt's border. We will ride fast, and we won't stop for anything. I promise it'll be a ride you'll always remember."
