Levi

Once again, I'm back in the land of poppies. As I wait for Historia for what feels like forever, I finally give my classic "tch" then decide to go home.

It looks like she didn't get the memo: we were supposed to meet so she could tell me whether she had a bun in the oven or not.

We could send letters, but they will have to be encrypted to avoid military detection.

Well, I guess I could explore more of this place. There has to be more than just flowers here. Maybe I should look into the tree again for more answers. It may show me another glimpse into mine and Historia's future.

"What the hell, Kenny?!"

I freeze when I hear that voice. It sounds like a woman.

Who the hell else could be here? This is mine and Historia's Path. It belongs to us. How dare someone trespasses into our perfect little paradise!

I growl, cresting a hill where I heard the voice.

"Lay off, Zoe! I'm doing the best I can!"

Zoe? Kenny?

Why are those names so familiar?

I peer down the hill, spying that man and woman. They look to be a few years younger me, maybe late twenties.

I just want to know what the hell they are doing here? Who are they, and what are they doing in mine and Historia's Path?

The woman, Zoe, scoffs, shaking her head. They're too far away for me to see, but I can make out the woman's dark hair. The man has blond hair.

"I can't believe I shared a womb with you. You're such a doofus! We have to finish the message before one of them arrives!"

"I'm doing my best! Geez, Zoe... why can't you be more like Ymir? My favourite sister for sure."

Zoe growls and stomps forward, kicking him up the ass, and I know that move.

That's how I kick someone up the ass.

The man falls forward with an oof, and it appears I'm just witnessing some sibling rivalry. I never had any siblings, so this display is alien to me.

I grind my teeth. Who are these people, and what are they doing here?

"Hey!" I shout.

The man and woman freeze, whipping their heads around. The man's eyes bulge when he sees me.

"Shit! Zoe, what do we do? He saw us... fuck! Won't this mess up the timeline?"

Zoe kicks him again with the heel of her shoe, and the man rubs his leg where her foot got him. "Shut up and just play dumb. We'll say we got lost here by accident."

I almost grind my teeth into a powder as I stomp down the hill. "I can hear you, you know. You're not exactly discrete!"

The man named Kenny chuckles. "Almost takes me back to when we were kids. Remember when he used to sneak up on us when we used to whisper about him, hey, Zo?"

"Shut up, dumbass," Zoe sneers. "We best go. He's... coming closer."

They start backing off now, and I move faster. "Oi! Don't you take another step! I want answers! Who the hell are you two?"

"Crap," Kenny mumbles. "It looks like we forgot that he still had the use of both of his legs in this timeline. He wouldn't have gotten his leg chewed up yet by the titan that tried to kill Uncle Connie during the Battle of—"

"Seriously, Kenny, just shut up!"

His sister yanks his arm forward, and they start running away. They're fast, and they've definitely got some good genes.

Almost enough to rival my own. I can just about keep up.

"Hey, not so fast!"

I chase after them, but they keep on running, and before I have a chance to catch up, they vanish in a bright flash of light.

I cover my eyes. What the hell? Who the fuck were they? And what were they talking about? My leg got chewed up by a titan after I saved Connie?

Do they mean Connie Springer in my squad?

I finally arrive at the patch of mud where they'd been squabbling like a pair of overgrown brats, peering down in frustration.

My heart thuds against my chest.

It's a message.

Don't give up. You will see Ymir soon, M and D.

She's just being lazy, like usual.

Love Kenny and Zoe

I pull a face. What the fuck just happened here? What's going on?

Who were those people, and why were they leaving messages in the mud? And where did they vanish to?

"Tch," I gripe, going to kick the mud away, but my foot freezes.

Their names are so familiar to me, and I stop, having the uncanny feeling that I have seen them somewhere before.

Their mannerisms, their voices. Why do they look so familiar?

I read the message again. "Don't give up. You will see Ymir soon, M and D. She's just being lazy, like usual. Love Kenny and Zoe."

Who is Ymir? I know they don't mean Ymir the Founder, or Historia's old pal freckled Ymir. Also, who are D and M? Was this message left for me and Historia?

Do they know us? I've never seen either of them in my life, even though they were familiar.

I just wish I got a better look at them, but for some reason, I know the woman would have had hair like my mom and the eyes of Historia. The man would have had blond hair like Historia's, but eyes like mine.

It dawns on me at last, and I stagger, a breath stuttering from my lips.

M and D.

Mom and Dad.

Shit... They were our kids!

Kenny and Zoe.

No wonder their names were so familiar. They're named after people I know and who were close to me (and still close to me in Hange's case).

And Ymir? Wait, could that be our eldest daughter?

"You will see Ymir soon. She's just being lazy, like usual..."

Lazy. Just like the time she slept in all morning in that future I saw.

I... I need to sit down and process this.

But most of all... I regret not reaching them sooner and hugging them. Even if it would have messed with the timeline, I would have made them tell me everything.

I need to know what's going to happen. How will everything play out?

Kenny and Zoe. I can't believe I finally know their names.

Ever since I saw them in the future, I haven't stopped thinking about them. They won't be born for some years, but their elder sister will be born in another ten months.

I smile.

It was just the sign we needed, and good timing too.

Historia has just arrived.

I peer up, meeting her wide, blue eyes. She reads the writing in the mud and looks at me confused. "What is this?"

The smile grows on my face. "You're not going to believe this..."

...

Historia

I don't speak for some time after Levi tells me what he saw. Our children had been here, from the future...

So they time travelled? How is that possible?

I shake my head, reaching up to grip my forehead We sit at the base of the hill where Levi saw our adult children, and I just can't...

"What does it all mean? I just..."

My heart won't stop fluttering.

Levi sighs, shaking his head. "Like hell I know. But it appears they're sending us messages and guiding us somehow."

I repeat the writing in the mud. "You will see Ymir soon? So, that will be her name? It appears I will name my firstborn child after my best friend after all. I'm not surprised. I wouldn't even be here today if weren't for her..."

It truly is touching. Ymir may be gone, but her spirit lives on.

Levi gives me one of his rare smiles again, and it warms my heart to see the expression on his face. He has such a beautiful face when he smiles.

"Seems that way. Looks like I will name my kid after the only father figure I ever had too, and Zoe... I'm sure Four Eyes will be pleased..."

I laugh. "I bet."

Things turn silent again. A sweet-smelling wind blows our way, and I could truly stay here forever. If we're lucky, maybe our kids will come back and pay us a visit.

One can hope.

"So, I take it you're here to tell me you're not pregnant?" Levi says, cutting straight to the point.

I suck in a breath. I had cried before coming here, dreading to tell him the news, but after the message our future children left for us, how can I not have hope?

"Yes," I say. "I got my monthly bleed."

Levi grimaces, and I narrow my eyes at him. The man has literally spilled the guts of titans and had blood all over his face, but he's disgusted by the mention of my menstrual cycle?

In the Path, I don't feel the effects of my cycle so much. My cramps have gone, and now I no longer feel like I'm dying. That explains why I was so somber before.

But I can't stop laughing now. I'm just so happy.

Without warning, I reach across and hug him tight, and Levi grumbles. "What are you doing?"

"Hugging you, of course. I'm just so happy. This is so exciting, Levi. Our future kids are leaving us messages in the mud."

"To be more precise, yeah..." Levi says, peering down at me. Then he smiles yet again, wrapping an arm around me, then ruffles my head.

I laugh once again.

Maybe things will finally look up for us after all.

I enjoyed writing this! I think coming up with a unique Path for Hisu and Levi was one of the best decisions I made for these two. We get all this extra stuff between them now that can happen when they both go MIA in the storyline (you will know what I mean).

I'm happy that season 4 will be split into three seasons now. There was no way they could have finished in just twelve episodes, let alone a movie. I just wasn't ready to say goodbye to SNK either. The manga was hard enough for me to deal with when it finished.

Also, I think it gives me more time to finish this story without pressure.

See you sometime next week. I have most of the next few chaps finished, but after I get to the final one, I think around chapter 24, I won't be posting weekly but bi-weekly. Just as a heads up.
