AU, alternate universe, World War II was in 2019-2023.
The rays of the autumn sun brightly flooded Los Angeles. A girl of about twenty-seven walked confidently down the street. Her black hair was cut into a neat bob, and her brown eyes looked straight and bold.
Her name was Anastasia Steele, and she was a captain of the Los Angeles police. Now the girl was heading to work, checking her phone messages along the way. 10 from her mother.
Anastasia rolled her eyes. She was an adult, damn it! No, Anastasia understood Carla Steele perfectly well, who let her daughter go from rainy Seattle to sunny California. But Ana was an experienced operative and an accomplished person. And her mother had to take this into account.
Entering the police station, Ana habitually greeted the security guard Erwin Smith and went up to her office.
- Steele! - Kate Kavanagh, her best friend and trainee, intercepted the girl at the entrance to the office.
- Hi, - Ana smiled. - What again?
- Colonel Roach is calling you, - Kate said guiltily. - Something about yesterday's raid on the Uchiha gang.
Anastasia rolled her eyes. Jerry Roach was a seasoned sparrow and knew everything or almost everything about criminal investigation. For Ana, he was a second father. But this did not stop him from scolding Miss Steele every now and then with or without reason.
- Steele, why did you run into bullets? - Roach was noisy, pacing around the office.
- What should I do - sit with papers? You know yourself that after all this, the crime rate is off the charts, - Ana calmly withstood the chief's gaze.
- Agreed! Survivors, spies... But you just graduated from the police academy. What will I tell Carla if you get hurt? - the colonel muttered.
- I'm resilient, you know that, - Ana grinned.
Roach sighed heavily.
- You're the best in the class. But your methods are... radical. Bring in trainee Kavanagh! And Hyde! Who's a famous pickpocket! - Roach was angry.
- Jack was sitting underground, gassed. He risked himself more than once! - the brunette objected.
- I agree with him! But he's a thief, a criminal element. And Kavanagh is just here to escape from her parents, who want to marry her off to Elliot Gray. She's not a cop, she's a model! Keep that in mind! - Roach continued to curse.
- She's worth ten experienced cops, she shoots accurately and fights like hell! The gang was caught, no one died! Everything went well! - Ana jumped up and immediately grabbed her heart.
- Ana, your heart is playing up. And you're only twenty-seven. Be careful, - Roach asked.
Anastasia nodded and left the colonel's office.
- Steele, - in the evening, as she was leaving the police station, the girl was stopped by Jack Hyde - her friend and the number one pickpocket in Los Angeles.
- Jack, you shouldn't be seen here, - Ana sighed. - I got into trouble because of you.
- Sorry, but I can't help you. You saved me back then. And Roach will have to accept that I'm a coward here, - Jack grinned. - Well, are we going home?
Ana nodded. The friends waited for Kavanagh and went towards a nondescript house in one of the courtyards. This house had survived the bombing, air raids and airstrikes of the Germans. Thanks to the efforts of the house's inhabitants, it was quickly restored.
- Just look at him, huh? He's dressed like he's going to the Costume Institute Ball. Eren, have you prepared for the seminar? - a graying brunette stood at one of the entrances and looked at her son, a student.
- Eren is soaping up for his Ackerman again, - laughed Kavanagh.
Eren, noticing the three friends, smiled at them. His mother, Carla, also smiled, briefly stopping arguing.
- Miss Steele, Kate, Jack, and I baked cheese pies. Will you come in? - asked Carla.
- Aunt Carla, later, - Anastasia waved her off.
Having said goodbye to Jack and Kate, Ana entered her entrance and went up to her own.
The apartment greeted her with silence and calm. The girl took off her shoes and, having taken a shower, went to bed.
