Luna swung her long slender legs out of the car after what felt like the longest journey of her life. The exhaustion was swallowing her whole already - it was almost offensive, in fact. She never expected something so simple as a town move to be so excruciatingly long and dramatic, but none of that mattered anymore.
She was going to see her best friend Stiles again - and that was all she wanted,
The ground beneath her seemed to spin a little as she felt her whereabouts slowly ring clear after sitting in the car for so long, just as her best friend came galloping down the street with a giant, goofy grin plastered on his face whilst his beloved blue and white flannel shirt flew behind him. "Oh look - here he comes," Luna's mother Elsa tutted, opening her own car door and jumping out herself. She pulled a little face as Stiles got closer to them. "Alright Stiles, we get it, you're happy to see her! Now for the love of God, please be careful before you-"
But before she could even reach the end of her sentence, Stiles was somehow face first in a heap on the ground. Luna burst out laughing and smothered her own face with her hands, feeling her cheeks tinge pink out of amusement and borderline adoration.
"He literally hasn't changed one bit," she giggled to herself.
She didn't exactly want Stiles to change, either. She desperately needed something to remain normal in her life since the…incident…had taken place, and out of all the things to stay the same, she sure was happy that it was Stiles Stilinski.
Her best friend got up and stumbled toward her messily, grabbing her shoulders when he reached her to maintain his balance.
"Hey good lookin'," he breathed directly into her face. It didn't take long for Luna to get the whiff of alcohol, and to then further understand why Stiles was acting the way he was.
"You're drunk?" both she and her mother guessed simultaneously.
Stiles scoffed, waving their theories off with an air of dismissal.
"Drunk? Nahhhh…okay kinda," he slurred. He looked Luna deep in her silvery blue eyes, almost as if he was transfixed. "Loooooooonaaaaa. Di you know you're really pretty in the moonlight?" Luna couldn't help but smile coyly, tucking her white wispy hair behind her pierced ear and out of her deep set doe eyes.
Stiles just continued to stare at her, almost in a daze, causing a rosy blush beginning to crawl on Luna's cheeks.
"You've changed," he murmured suddenly. "You look…like…different."
"Different in a good way?" Luna frowned.
"Well yeah, always," Stiles stated as if it were obvious, rolling his eyes sassily.
"So then…maybe I look older? It has been some time since we lived near each other," Luna guessed. Stiles bit down on his bottom lip and shook his head slowly, gradually getting closer to her. Luna gulped and took an uncertain step back, unable to break eye contact with him.
"No…it's more like-"
"Stiles!" Elsa interrupted their little moment sharply. Both of their heads snapped around to face her, rudely breaking them out from their little moment with one another. "Where's your father, please? I'm supposed to see him and give him something, preferably before we unpack."
"Oh! In the h-house," Stiles managed to string the few words together. Elsa nodded as a curt reply whilst she heaved the luggage out of the back of the car and proceeded to wheel it to the Stilinski household.
But Stiles straightened up as soon as she had left them alone.
"Yup! She still hates me doesn't she?" he coughed awkwardly. Luna rolled her eyes and ruffled Stiles' dark chocolate hair.
"Well…I don't even know why you would pretend to be drunk - that wasn't ever going to win her over now was it? She's not that liberal, you of all people must remember that much," she grinned. Stiles gave a coy smile and shrugged his shoulders innocently.
"Worth a try. I am a little drunk though, I will admit that - Scott and I went to a party last night and did some bad things. I haven't recovered from it yet," he muttered, rubbing his forehead with his knuckles. Luna raised an eyebrow and turned to face him properly again.
"Stiles? Drunk and doing bad things? Never thought I'd see the day," she gasped in mock horror. Stiles opened his mouth to retaliate, but didn't get the words out, as something had changed. Somehow, he'd noticed Luna's eyes go from the comfortable light blue to a steady deep and dangerous purple. Luna herself felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up and her heart began racing all of a sudden, which only could mean one thing.
Wolf.
And that scared her, since she hadn't had a run in with one since she came back from London.
Something to report back already? The Moon Council were gonna love the sound of this one.
"Loo? Hey dude, you feeling okay?" Stiles asked lowly. He wasn't comfortable with what he just witnessed – the last time he had seen someone's eyes change colour was the last full moon, and that absolutely didn't end well considering the supernatural situations that occurred soon after.
But he didn't put two and two together, he didn't want to look too far into it because if he found anything 'wrong' with Luna – he wouldn't be able to handle it, and Luna could sense that.
He was clearly close to breaking point.
So she bit down on her plump bottom lip and nodded quickly, trying her best to shake the tingling feeling under her skin for Stiles' sake. She had to at least try.
"I'm fine…I'm…do you have…uh…" she trailed off awkwardly and shook her head. "Ya know what? Don't worry." Stiles blinked at her in confusion but simply shrugged it off and draped an arm over her slender shoulder.
"So, I take it you're gonna come round now, right? You gotta tell me stories about London, how was it? Oh and I love the new hair by the way, the colour kinda suits your name and it is totally you," he grinned, spinning her around so that they too were walking towards his house behind her mother. Luna attempted to reply, but her senses were just getting worse by the second.
Whatever it was that she could feel, it was just getting closer. And she didn't know whether to freak out and get Stiles away for his safety, or pretend like she just had no idea what was happening in case he was already aware of it.
"Stiles, do you think we could go out and get some pizza or something? Don't really wanna stay there," she suddenly asked quickly.
"Pizza? I mean yeah, sure we can," Stiles nodded back swiftly, about to turn around and walk back down the path.
Suddenly, another teenager appeared in front of them, panting and running his fingers through his large mop of hair. He was bulky, he was tanned, he was smiling.
"There you are Scott, I was trying to call you all morning!" Stiles blinked accusatorially, shaking his head. But for Luna, that little meeting was all it really took. She realised what Scott was immediately but, for some reason, it wasn't the same vice versa. Scott's eyes were fixated on hers, like he was trying to figure out what she was, but just couldn't put his finger on it - and Luna tried everything to avoid his eye contact so that she didn't make it any easier for him to be able to tell.
Stiles picked up on their uneasiness immediately and his head jolted up.
"Uh, hello? Earth to Scott! Dude!"
"Y-yeah. Sorry, I just got a little…distracted," Scott quickly covered his tracks and tore his eyes away from Luna for a split second. She clenched her jaw and ran her tongue over her teeth uneasily, praying that he'd keep quiet.
"Well, not like that hasn't happened before. This is my old best friend Luna - I don't know if you remember her? She's just moved here…about five minutes ago, actually," Stiles introduced her politely, pushing her forward by her slender shoulders.
"Uh, no I don't think we've met before…hey Luna, I'm Scott." Scott held out his hand toward Luna and she took it cautiously, shaking it up and down with no sudden movements so that she didn't trigger anything.
"Luna Klypse," she murmured back, shooting him a little smile again afterwards to keep him cool. Stiles, oblivious to the subtle undertones in their handshake, grinned at the sight of his best guy friend and his best girl friend meeting for the first time ever.
He couldn't have it better if he tried.
"Well this is super cute," he grinned, one arm around Luna and the other loosely around Scott. "I feel like we're gonna have a great time together."
"Mhm," Luna hummed unenthusiastically as Scott grimaced uncomfortably too.
Great.
...
"So…your friend Luna seems pretty nice," Scott told Stiles that evening as they drove through the dark roads to the drive thru for their dinner. Stiles nodded slowly in agreement and felt a small smile crawl onto his face.
He always felt a little happier way when talking about her.
"She is, we've been best friends for, like, ever," he hummed back, eyes focussed on the road in front of him.
Scott couldn't shake the initial feeling though. He didn't know what it was, but he couldn't read Luna as fully human, but not a wolf either.
"It's just…refreshing, I guess, to finally be with someone who's human too - no offence," Stiles continued to speak into the silence.
"Plenty taken! What's that supposed to mean?" Scott turned to him with a playful frown and Stiles glanced at him before smiling to himself.
"Nothing, nothing," he mumbled, that small smile on his face not disappearing, much to Scott's slight concern.
