Eddie continued to look down at the little girl on top of her chest, her cries mere whimpers currently and her tiny hands were flexing up against her mother's skin. She winced and looked down by her feet at the end of the stretcher where Jamie was still at.
"Are you almost done?"
Jamie gave Eddie a sympathetic look and took a peek at his brand-new baby girl.
"Almost done sweetheart. I promise. Look at those tiny hands. I promise I'm almost done. I'm just trying to stop the bleeding."
Eddie gave Jamie a tired look and frowned.
"Can't you just give me some Pitocin?"
Jamie was about to answer Eddie but projected his voice towards the EMT driving the bus.
"Hey, we've got precious cargo back here, careful of the potholes!"
The EMT driving projected his voice back towards Jamie and apologized.
"Sorry doc! I'm trying!"
Jamie managed to look up at Eddie for a brief moment and saw a look of pain cross her face.
"Jamie, it hurts…"
Jamie felt the blood drain from his face and Eddie could see him become pale, but he plastered a smile on his face and reassured her.
"I know. I'm sorry. I am almost done. One more minute."
The EMT who had mostly been on the sidelines looked Jamie in the eye and then had a look behind the sheet.
"Uh, Doctor Reagan, she's hemorrhaging a lot."
Jamie nodded and continued concentrating on what he was doing.
"I know. I'm trying to get it under control."
Eddie peered down at Jamie, all while keeping the sleeping baby in her arms cradled against her chest.
"I'm not bleeding out, am I?"
Jamie swallowed but kept reassuring her.
"I won't let that happen babe. Just lie back. Try and relax ok? I know this is really uncomfortable. We still need to give the baby a name. What name suits her?"
Eddie blinked tiredly and was fighting to stay awake.
"I really like… I like… S-Sadie…"
Jamie smiled behind the sheet and tried to keep Eddie focused.
"Sadie. I love it babe. What should her middle name be?"
Jamie stayed by Eddie's side, and he kept going over the details of what happened in the OR. He almost lost her. She was alive and that's what mattered. Now he just had to figure out a way to break the other news to her gently. Every now and again he would correlate with the heart monitor to make sure it was accurate. Fix the iv in her hand. That is until Linda stepped into the room.
"I'm sorry to interrupt Jamie. I just came to check on Eddie. How's she doing?"
Jamie looked up when Linda placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Still sleeping. I'm not exactly sure how to break the news to her."
Linda's eyebrows shot up and then understanding settled in.
"Eddie's strong and you have a great bed side manner. Do you want me to stay when you tell her?"
A heavy sigh escaped Jamie's mouth.
"That would be great thanks. I don't know why I'm having so much trouble processing this. I mean, we both agreed we weren't having any more children after Sadie, so…"
Linda took a chair and sat down next to Jamie, giving his shoulder a squeeze.
"You are the most compassionate and caring doctor I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. You make sure that every mother and baby is taken care of. You fight for them tooth and nail. It's why you've been recognized every year since you started working here."
Jamie shook his head and put his hands up slightly, shaking his head.
"I didn't get into medicine to receive atta boys and accolades. That's not who or what I'm about. Doing my job and bringing healthy babies into the world is what brings me happiness. It's why I love coming to work every day. I may have been promoted to chief of department, but I still like to get my hands dirty."
Linda was about to answer when her and Jamie saw Eddie begin to stir in the bed. Jamie leaned closer to Eddie and ran a hand through her messy blond locks. He saw her open her eyes slowly and they landed on Jamie. She opened her mouth at first and it took a moment or two to speak.
"J-Jamie?"
Nodding, Jamie did his best to swallow the lump in his throat.
"I'm right here babe. How are you feeling?"
Eddie stayed still in the bed.
"It hurts. Where's Sadie?"
Jamie laid down the facts for Eddie.
"I can get you some more Morphine. Should make you feel better in a few minutes. Sadie is up in the nursery. She's beautiful. 9 pounds 6 ounces. She's perfect. She's all settled up there and having a nap."
Eddie smiled and then a frowned quickly replaced it.
"Jamie, if I'm on the Morphine, that means I can't breastfeed."
Jamie ran a hand over her left cheek.
"It's ok. We can supplement for a little while, until your off the Morphine."
The frown stayed plastered on Eddie's face, she managed to cross her arms over her chest.
"There's something else your completely avoiding telling me."
Trying not to hang his head, he nodded and took the plunge.
"Yes. You were bleeding a lot when we got to the hospital. You were rushed to the OR. I watched the whole procedure the entire time. There was so much blood inside your uterus, and we couldn't stop the bleeding. Massaging your uterus didn't help any. It usually helps in stopping the bleeding, but in this case it didn't. You had several blood transfusions. The other doctors had to perform a Hysterectomy. I'm… I'm sorry…"
Eddie could hear the crack in Jamie's voice as he finished speaking. The tears in his eyes. She put on a brave face as he leaned his forehead against hers.
"It's ok bub. I'm alive and I'm here. It's not like we're going to have more kids anyways."
Jamie knew Eddie was just deflecting from the situation. She needed time to process. He was there for her every step of the way.
