Bromega2477: Don't worry, I fixed it.
Perseus12: That suggestion with Stella? Not happening. As for when Nathan will meet Verosika, during the Spring Break episode.
Disclaimer: I do not own Spawn or Helluva Boss. I only own the OC Nathan Nolan/Spawn.
With the pay that they earned from protecting Stolas and Octavia at Loo Loo Land, before it went up in flames, Nathan used his cut to buy himself an apartment in imp City. It had not been easy, since there was always a landlord looking to try and swindle him but eventually he got a good apartment not far from the office and it was a good price that wasn't too cheap but not too expensive either which was a surprise.
The place wasn't luxurious, it reminded him of an apartment in New York City, especially the interior.
Blitzo was sure as hell happy about it, something about not wanting him to keep sleeping in the office and doing who knows what. Nathan had just scowled at his boss and flipped him off before getting to work on having proper essentials ordered such as a bed, sofa, TV, everything that he'd need to make his apartment look habitable.
And also some locks and cameras. Moxxie had warned him about how Blitzo gets into his and Millie's apartment somehow to annoy them, whether it be when they're making dinner and hiding in the fridge, while they're sleeping and he's standing over them on their bed and... purring, or recording them at random times such as one time when Moxxie was singing a song to Millie for their anniversary.
Nathan had just looked at Blitzo and asked 'What the fuck is wrong with you?'
It was a question that must remain unanswered.
Right now, Nathan was having his sofa put in, having assumed his human form now that he was in his own place but knew he'd have to take his Hellspawn form when outside. While this Hell was not familiar with what he was, the last thing he wanted was attention by walking around as a human. Being in Hellspawn form was enough, he didn't need that to amplify by walking around as a human.
Of course, Nathan wasn't unloading everything by himself, he had offered help from Moxxie and Millie.
"I gotta say, this place is looking fresh and habitable." Millie commented as she finished putting a microwave up on the kitchen counter while Moxxie checked to see if the fridge was on and nodded when he saw it was.
Nathan chuckled. "Thanks Millie. and thanks for the help. Both of you. I'd prefer having help from those I know rather than hired movers."
"Ah, anything for a friend, sweetie." Millie waved off his thanks humbly. "But you didn't have to do the heavy lifting by yourself, we could've handled it."
"Could we?" Moxxie looked at his wife with a raised eyebrow, before looking at Nathan. "I don't understand why you needed such a large bed."
"Well I sure as shit ain't sleeping in a small, single bed. So a double bed will do." Nathan said.
Mille gave a sly smirk and nudged his elbow with her elbow. "Or maybe you want a bed that big in case you bring over some company~" She teased.
Nathan snorted, but gave a slight smirk. "Maybe." Being in this new Hell must be getting to him if he wasn't thinking about that with some hesitance. He hasn't actually been with a woman since his wife. And while he wasn't human, he did still desire women, and he was in Hell. It was inevitable that he'd probably end up sleeping with a female demon. "But i ain't looking for that kind of thing just now."
"Just now, he says." Millie giggled.
Nathan rolled his eyes before grabbing the last of the boxes from out in the hall and taking them inside, putting them down in the corner of the living room. Once he was done with that, he walked over to a box that held some bottles of whiskey, grabbing three. He offered to share with Millie and Moxxie, which they accepted.
After taking a sip from her bottle, Millie spoke. "So, on an unrelated note, Moxxie and I have noticed that you and Loona seem to be getting along well."
Nathan paused in sipping his own, frowning. "It ain't like that. She's just a friend."
Moxxie butted in, "Oh, we know. You would need to prepare for Blitz to castrate you with a rusty knife, and I don't think you are willing to do that. Millie does, but I don't. No, we were just wondering why she was, well, less of a bitch to you."
"I did save her from being raped." Nathan pointed out. "Trust me, I'm not easy to get along with myself. Been through a lot of shit in my life to be an easy-going guy. Loona talks, I listen, and vice versa although I did have alcohol in me that time."
"i try speaking to her like a friend, and she tries to bite my head off. Literally. I don't know how you do it when you say you aren't easy to get along with." Moxxie pointed out.
Nathan sighed and put his bottle down. "I don't know what to tell you, Mox. She'd barely call me her friend, we just act civil with each other. Hell, she doesn't trust me that much."
"She doesn't trust anybody." Millie said. "But I like to think that you saving her gave her a little bit of trust in you. She's just had a hard life."
"Haven't we all?" Nathan sighed, glancing towards the photo of his family that he had propped up in the kitchen.
Moxxie and Millie glanced at each other after seeing where his gaze went. It took a few days following the Loo Loo Land incident, when Nathan gave some details about his past to the married couple, which was a sign of trust to them and they were grateful. Nathan mentioned that his wife and kids had been murdered, and that he made a deal with a demon to get revenge but it cost him his soul, and he didn't know whether it had been worth it even if he got revenge and his soul back in the end.
He also mentioned that they could call him a Hellspawn, or something akin to a demon, since it was basically what he was but he wasn't like any demon or other hellspawn they knew resided in Hell. And they could tell he wasn't giving all the details about his past, which was fine with them. He already trusted them enough to mention his family to them, they weren't going to push it.
Millie sighed. "Look, sweetie, I think you put yourself down a little too much. Now what happened to you isn't anything to forget, even after ten years. You yourself said you've moved on and grieved, but that don't mean the pain and memories with them stop. You're different from any other demon down here, saving Loona from being raped. If that ain't special, then I don't know what is. Both Moxxie and I think you are different, and apparently, Loona can see it as well."
Moxxie added, "And who cares what Blitz thinks. He's an idiot."
Nathan's lips twitched into a small smirk. "Thanks, guys. I appreciate it. but Loona and I have known each other for a couple of weeks now, and she ain't ready to label us as friends. We just get along, that's it. And i doubt there'd be anything romantic between her and I."
Millie sighed but nodded. "Whatever you say, Nate."
Moxxie then grimaced. "We should probably get to the office. I can already hear the earful Blitz is going to give us."
"Where the FUCK have you three been?!" Blitzo shouted as soon as Nathan (In his Hellspawn form), Moxxie and Millie arrived at the office. "I already had a client come to the office, and we're getting a fuck-load of targets to kill! A fucking cult in Noway who are doing sacrifices to some Norse God, Thar or something."
"Thor?" Nathan raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah, whatever." Blitzo waved off.
"Seriously, there's people that'll do that kind of thing for other religions?" Nathan asked with disbelief, crossing his arms. "And here I thought the whole cult and sacrifice thing was only done by those who worship the Devil."
"Sometimes they differ." Millie shrugged.
"Does it really fucking matter?" Blitzo groaned.
"We were late because we were helping Nathan get his stuff into his apartment, sir." Moxxie explained their lateness.
"Then but a fucking watch next time, Mox!" Blitzo grabbed his fellow Imp and growled. "Or I swear I'll take it out of your ass!" He then looked at Loona who was at her desk as usual. "Loony! Fire up the portal!"
"Have fun." Nathan said as the portal was opened, the Hellspawn walking over to the couch while grabbing a newspaper.
"Excuse me?" Blitzo turned to him, hands on his hips. "The fuck did you say? You're coming too. I need that brutal, fucking killer you are to help with this."
"Nope." Nathan opened the magazine, then glanced up. "I helped slaughter a Colombian drug-lord, and all of his men, after you didn't get the fucking details about him and we went in unprepared. Consider this my day off, and getting you back for dragging me to Loo Loo Land."
Blitzo ran a hand down his face. "You're never going to let that go, are you?"
Nathan pretended to think about it. "Let me think-no." He went back to his newspaper.
Blitzo growled and turned around. "Well, fine" But you ain't getting paid!"
"I'm shaking in my boots." Nathan said boredly, not looking up from his reading. He already had a decent amount of money left from buying the apartment and getting stuff ordered.
Blitzo went through the portal, which shut a second later. Loona closed the grimoire with a heavy slam and practically slammed it onto the desk while plopping down into her chair with a frustrated air around her.
Nathan glanced up from his newspaper, raising an eyebrow. "What's wrong?" he asked, eyes going back to reading an article about Lucifer's daughter, Charlie Morningstar, and her dream of redeeming Sinners so they can get into Heaven. She's even planning to open a hotel dedicated to it.
"Wrong?! You wanna know what's wrong?!" Loona snapped, though not entirely at him. She was more angry with the recent situation. "I went to the clinic today, and they want to fucking charge a lot of money just to check if I even had Syphilis! I don't even have that much! What the fuck am I going to do now?!" She sat back down, huffing with anger and frustration.
Nathan looked up now. "We can just go to Earth and go to a clinic. They'll be cheaper."
Loona gave him a questioning look. "What?"
Nathan sighed and repeated. "We can go to Earth and visit a clinic. They'll be cheaper than down here. We'll be there and back before those three finish their job."
Loona looked off to the side, unsure. "I don't know..."
Nathan almost sighed again but stopped himself. "Do you want to get treated?"
Loona glared at him, mostly for his tone. "Yes."
"Do you wanna see the human world?"
Loona's teeth were showing now. "Yes."
"Then what the fuck are you unsure about?" Nathan briefly threw his hands up in exasperation. "You want to see the human world? This is your chance. And trust me, it'll be fucking cheap compared to here."
Loona's aggression faded away, and instead she gave a small smile before nodding. "Sure, it's not like I have a better choice, do I?"
"Right, now let's get that portal opened." Nathan nodded.
In Central Park, Manhattan, a portal opened to allow Nathan and Loona to step through. The Hellspawn sighed as he looked around, knowing that this wasn't his Earth. It was an entirely different universe. He turned to the Hellhound next to him, who was completely out of place up here, but she looked around with curiosity in her eyes and almost awe.
"I trust you have a disguise." He stated more than asked, shifting into his human form.
Loona gave him a 'duh' look and was engulfed in a vortex of flames. The sound of a howl and what sounded like bar chimes came from the transformation until it disappeared in an instant to reveal a human girl that was a little shorter than Nathan. Her red iris no doubt was similar in coloring to her usual red eyes, and her clothes remained the same. Her hair was similar with it being great in volume for half of her head with the other part buzzed down. The only major clothing change was her shoes, which looked like a pair of converse sneakers.
She fixed her hair for a moment before looking at Nathan. "How do I look?" She asked.
Nathan's mouth was slightly agape and he swallowed. "You look... wow. You look very beautiful."
Loona'e eyes widened and she blushed, looking away and playing with her hair for a moment. She's not been called that very often, and being called it by him set off some feeling in her gut. It was a tingly-type of feeling. "T-Thanks." She stuttered.
Nathan cleared his throat and looked away, trying to ignore the feeling in his body. "Well, that disguise works. We should... we should get moving."
Loona nodded, still flustered a little. "Y-Yeah. Where do we go anyway?"
"I used to live in New York, so hopefully that clinic is still here." Nathan said, mentally adding. 'At least I fucking hope so. Different Earths, after all.'
They walked side-by-side through the park, but made no effort to talk to each other. Nathan stuffed his hands into his jacket pockets, and glanced around at the people who were out for a nice day at the park with their families or pets. He was also mentally smacking himself for his compliment towards Loona, it doesn't help that his conversation with Moxxie and Millie earlier came back to the forefront of his mind.
Loona, on the other hand, seemed to be taking in the sights with much enthusiasm, so he was just going to keep his mouth shut and not ruin the experience for her.
It took them about thirty minutes, but they found a clinic. While it wasn't the one Nathan recognised from his Earth, it was still a clinic so he chose it. Luckily, it was a slow day, so they didn't have to worry about there being a lot of people. Nathan talked to the receptionist and they were sent to the waiting room, and soon enough met with one of the doctors who they discussed the issue with. He proceeded to take some blood from Loona and left to check her antibodies.
Now they waited in the room. Loona sat on the treatment table, Nathan just walking around the room and looking at the medical stuff they had. A thought then occurred to Nathan. "Your blood becomes human when you change form, right?"
Loona looked at him, irritated but that was because she was nervous. "How should I know? I don't know how it fucking works. if he comes back in with cops or some shit, we'll get our answer, won't we?"
Nathan paused in looking at a leaflet, looking at the Hellspawn. He narrowed his eyes in thought, taking in her nervousness and shifty eyes. "You don't like hospitals." He stated more than asked.
Loona shook her head. "Or clinics. Or anything that has to do with doctors and nurses. Anything to do with them means..." She shuddered fearfully. "Shots."
"Ah shit." Nathan muttered, pinching the bridge of his nose. Of course she was afraid of shots. "Well, I hate it to break it to you, but you will need to get some shots."
"What?!" Loona looked at him with wide eyes, and a whimper left her. "You didn't tell me that!"
"Loona, just calm down."
She hugged herself tightly. "I can't get anymore shots. The last time I did, I was in a fucking cage!"
Ah. PTSD from something in the past, boy did Nathan have experience in that department.
Knowing she may react aggressively, he asked. "You want to talk about it?"
The Hellhound in human form glared at him with fury. "No, I don't!" She got off the table and was right in his face. "Stay out of my fucking business!" She turned and made for the door. "I can't stay here! I need to go!"
nathan rushed at her, grabbing her from behind and pulling her away from the door. "Loona, no! Just stop, calm down and listen to me!"
She snapped her glare back at him. "Why should I? You're not going to stop me from leaving!"
Nathan shot a glare back at her. "Do you want to be fucking cured? Do you want to go around with a disease in your blood for the rest of your life? I am trying to help you, and if I need to be fucking harsh about it then so be it. Don't expect me to fucking assure you in the nice way, because nice isn't what I do. Do you think you have problems? I was shit scared when Sarah told me she was pregnant with my son, and we were only eighteen at the time. She said she was keeping it, and understood if I didn't want to stick around. I asked her to marry me then and there."
Loona blinked, shocked to hear that, especially at the age.
"Yeah, our friends looked at us the same way." Nathan said at seeing her expression. "Everyone said we were crazy for it, but I didn't care. She didn't care. All we cared about was the fact we had a child on the way. And trust me, Sarah hated hospitals just as much as you do. Hell, I fucking hated needles and doctors as a kid. Every appointment to the dentist or whatever, I fucking hated it. Now Sarah, she couldn't stand hospitals, she fought with me each time I had to remind her about it and take her. But every time, I was there at her side. I'd hold her hand, letting her trust me as I trust her, and I'd assure her I'd never let go."
He sat beside Loona on the table. "I don't know how you view me, and I really don't care at the moment. But goddammit, you're a friend to me. So trust me in that I'm trying to help you and that this will benefit you in the long run."
Nathan breathed a little heavily as he finished, and Loona stared at him for several moments. She glanced at the door with a look of anxiety, hands gripping the table tightly. She then looked up at him, her red eyes connecting with his green ones, and her worry seemed to fade away if only a little. She swallowed before giving him a look of determination.
"You're right. Now's not the time to be a pussy." She said. "I've come this far... might as well see it through to the end."
Nathan gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. "And know that I've got you. I'm here."
It was another minute or three before the doctor finally came back with the results, checking a clipboard as he did. A nurse was also with him, carrying a tray that had a needle and vial on it. The sight made Loona stiffen and she grabbed Nathan's hand before he could release hers.
"Well, you managed to get a checkup at the right moment. If I were to guess, you aren't too far away from Latent Stage Syphilis. All we need to give you is an injection of long-acting Benzathine penicillin G and you will be set to go." The doctor informed them.
Loona nodded, "Alright… So, what? Does that big-ass needle go in my arm or…"
The doctor started to put on gloves before he shook his head. He said, "Umm, no. The injection site will be through one of your hip muscles."
Nathan winced as he could practically see Loona's face drain as her eyes contracted in slight fear. She then uttered, "Oh…"
The doctor continued to prepare with the assistance of his nurse. He stated, "You just need to pull down one side of your shorts enough so that I may sanitize and administer the medication. Your boyfriend can leave-"
Loona yelled a little, "No!" Then looked back with embarrassment before she said, "He stays." She completely ignored the 'boyfriend' part, which Nathan barely noted as well.
The doctor didn't seem to care either way while he continued to prep. Loona pulled down her shorts on one side to expose part of one of her cheeks. Nathan stood in front of her while waiting patiently for all of this to be over and done with. Loona jumped a little when he sanitized the area with a sanitation wipe. When he was done with that, he threw it away before moving and grabbing the needle.
The doctor spoke, "You might want to take a deep breath. This is going to hurt."
Loona surprised Nathan by gripping his hand tightly and burying her face into his chest while whimpering, though she at least managed to make it sound human and not dog-like. Nathan was surprised but he held her, giving her a reassuring squeeze to let her know he was there. A second later, the doctor had injected the needed, and Nathan felt Loona's grip tighten before she managed to grit out some words.
"I fucking hate you for this." She gritted.
"Yep, I know." Nathan nodded, hardly offended.
Once the injection was complete, the doctor placed the needle into a bin while the nurse placed a bandaged over the area that had been injected. "Alright, that will do it." the doctor said, removing his gloves. "I recommend you gently massage the muscles around the area to ease the pain and discomfort you'll have for a few hours. When you get home, I'd suggest you apply some warm and cold pads as well."
"Thank you." Nathan said as Loona pulled the side of her shorts up, wincing a little.
"I fucking hate shots." She mumbled under her breath.
Soon enough, they were exiting the clinic building and Nathan glanced at Loona, taking her in. Seeing that there was a bit of a glow around her, as if something had been eased off her shoulders. Well, he supposed anyone would feel that way at having a STD treated. She still looked the same, but there was a positive change to her.
The Hellhound noticed his eyes on her and frowned, fidgeting a little. "What are you looking at?"
"You." he said bluntly, and continued before she could speak. "There's a change about you now that that's been dealt with."
Loona scoffed and looked away. "Don't get it wrong, it's just the removal of one reason why I'm a fucked up girl. I'd hardly call it progress." She paused, then glanced at him again. "But... you've been more dependable than any guy I've been with. So thanks... i guess I can trust you."
"From you, I'll take that as a huge step." Nathan smirked, then looked around. "We should probably get back. Last thing I need is Blitz coming back and getting the wrong idea. And I know you want to check out more things on Earth, but after that, you probably just want to lie down and rest."
"Yeah." Loona agreed, and the two started their walk to find a place to open a portal back to Hell. As they walked, Loona glanced at him. "I guess we're even again. After this, I don't think you owe me for Loo Loo Land."
Nathan chuckled. "Sure, Loona."
They made their way to the park where people were still enjoying their day. Kids were running around after each other, playing with their siblings or their pet dogs, some were even feeding the swan in the pond. Parents were laying down with a picnic set. People that they passed offered a friendly nod and smile, confusing Loona.
"I thought you said Earth's no different from Hell." She said, then glanced at Nathan to see him staring off into the distance with a pained look on his face before her words snapped him out of it.
"Depends on where you go." He said quietly, he sighed and shrugged his shoulders, his tone lightened up a little. "New York's always a rough place, but good people here. The amount of times I took my kids to this park, to the zoo." He swallowed a lump in his throat and shook his head, wiping at his face a little. "Fuck... We should probably get back."
Loona stared at him for a moment, her eyes holding sadness. While he did mention once that he's moved on and grieved... the pain still remained. The memories remained and that brings the pain.
She soon opened the portal to the office, and Nathan walked past the Hellhound and into the portal without another word, not seeing the distraught Loona hold her hand out to him but stopped before contact could be made. She didn't know how to ease his mind. How to help him. He helped her... and she didn't know what to fucking do to return the favour.
This hollow feeling she was getting in the chest was new.
She sighed quietly and walked into the portal, which soon closed.
Don't worry, not every chapter's gonna be Nathan brooding and whatnot. Yeah, his family was killed ten years ago (Five before he wakes up as a Hellspawn, then five proceeding that and his war with Heaven and Hell in his Earth), but there's always the memories.
