Chapter 1: My Name Is Shawn Plummer
Nearly close to midnight and just outside of the Mercury Town Police Department, Peanut sits in the ambulance, staring out of it. "Craig…" Peanut whimpers to himself sadly while being checked on by one of the paramedics.
"Hey little man, you're going to be okay. Just a couple of scratches and a pretty nasty bump on your head. Just take it easy and…-"
Peanut doesn't even listen or respond to the paramedic. Instead, he simply looks at Craig sitting in the police squad car hurt. He just sits there blaming himself. 'It's my fault. …It's all my fault.'
'My name is Shawn Plummer. I also go by the name Peanut. Today I was kidnapped because my dad just so happens to be a very important inventor with a lot of money. I was so ignorant and obsessed with wanting to go to the Country Fair. I couldn't go, but I went either way… all because I lied. None of this would've happened, if I just told the truth or just never went in the first place, but no… I lied and went anyways.
This is my side of the story. What I went through… on this horrible day.'
Rewind one week before it all happened - to before the Mercury Country Fair began…
Within the small town of Nue Haven on a Friday afternoon, the final bell can be heard coming from a Middle School as Peanut sadly exits out of the main gates.
He slowly saunters over to his ride as his Chauffeur, a middle aged, slightly overweight Bobcat in his elegant black and white uniform holding the back door open for him. "Thank you… Bobby," Peanut says with clear disappointment on his face as he steps into the car.
Bobby cracks a smile, knowing that he's in a bad mood for a reason. He enters, tossing his cap onto the passenger seat and adjusts the rearview mirror to see Peanut sitting in the back seat upset. In his Spagonian accent he asks, "Out with it Mr. Plummer. What's bothering you?"
Peanut stares at the rearview mirror, seeing Bobby's eyes looking right back at him. Giving an annoyed look back, he glances every which way before saying, "I don't see my dad here… You know what that means, right?"
Bobby just smiles back. "You are in a bad mood. So I'm guessing everyone said no?"
"Everyone failed me," he answers back, crossing his arms with a pout.
He cracks a smile, but doesn't laugh. "So Mr. Fowler also said no? It's just a bad year to go to it."
All Peanut does is he narrows his eyes, stares back and doesn't say a word.
Bobby sees his reaction and sighs, correcting himself, "Sorry, bad habit. I meant Wally. Did he also say no again?"
"Yeah… he said there was too much work at the shop to even go." They stop at a red light. Peanut sighs, "This is going to be the first year that I don't get to go. There has to be a way."
The light turns green as Bobby looks up at the rearview mirror to see Peanut again. Continuing to drive he says, "There's still a week-" he quickly slams on the breaks and turns his head to the left as another vehicle's tires screech to a halt.
Peanut, unsure as to what just happened, sees the fur on the back of Bobby's neck flare up.
With a great deal of restraint, trying to remain as polite as he can, he asks, "Mr. Plummer, can you please cover your ears?"
Peanut covers them tightly as he sees Bobby roll down his window and sticks his arm out of it while shouting offensive things at the other driver. It's very rare to see Bobby get angry, but driving is something he takes pride in doing. Getting cut off or being mistreated is something he takes very seriously. Once he was done arguing, he closes the window, giving him the thumbs up to uncover his ears.
Putting the car in motion again, he continues, "As I was saying, there's still a week left. Maybe something might change."
Peanut shakes his head. "Doesn't seem like it. Everyone's pretty much made it clear."
Stopping at another red light, Bobby notices the post office, which reminds him… "Have you finished that letter yet? We're about to pass the post office." Once he asks, he looks at the rearview mirror. Peanut slightly tilts his head up as his sad expression completely fades away and begins to smile. "Oh no." Knowing exactly what he's planning, he begins to worry making him drive faster.
Peanut looking at the post office go by, he orders, "OH YES! STOP THE CAR!"
"I-I have to get you home-"
"NO YOU DON'T! STOP THE CAR, RIGHT NOW!" The car comes to a stop as Peanut exits out.
Bobby opens and also exits out, pleading, "Please Mr. Plum-"
Peanut gives him a glare making him stop.
Bobby pauses, then attempts to plea again, "Please Peanut, let's just go home so that you can talk about this with your father."
"That's the thing… He can't know about this." He paces back and forth. "It's a major no if I ask him. I have to figure out a way."
"And if you did figure out a way, he will find out and punish you for it."
"No he won't. He might be a so-called genius, but he's also pretty dense."
Bobby sighs. "I can just hear him now…" he impersonates his dad, "You will remain in your room 'til the ends of… of-" He notices Peanut just staring back at him, with his mouth and eyes wide open. Which causes him become worried once again, "Oh no, what have I done?"
"Oh…YES!" Peanut shouts back at him happily while taking out his phone.
Bobby quickly gets back into the car refusing, "No, no, NO! I will not impersonate your father. I-I refuse."
"Yes you will." He gets to the passenger car door.
"No… I… WON'T! I know where your pen pal resides. IN PRISON! So as a matter of fact… I'm going to tell your father about this stunt of yours."
Peanut stops messing with his phone and gives him a smug look. "You do that, and I'll tell him that you keep using the wrong type of gas to fill up the cars every… single… time."
In utter shock from what he just heard, he glares back. "You wouldn't dare."
Peanut just smiles back. "Challenge accepted." He puts his hand past the window with his phone. "Don't forget the lisp."
Bobby reaches out and takes it, and sighs in concern. "Why didn't I just keep my mouth shut? No! Why didn't I just stay in bed today?" He then points. "I'm having your piggy bank over this."
Peanut re-enters the car happily. "Fine by me, just as long as it goes to a good cause." He rubs his hands together in excitement. "This is going to be the best Country Fair ever."
Fast forward one week later, on an early Saturday morning…
Peanut exits out of his room wearing his usual bright yellow shirt and brown shorts. He was also wearing brown sneakers and knee high white socks. With a happy smile on his face and in a good mood, he knew that today was the day of the Country Fair.
He heads to the kitchen, surprised to see his dad is also having his breakfast. 'He's here…? I thought he'd be at work finishing one of his inventions.'
His dad looks up and away from the morning newspaper, noticing Peanut enter. He gives him a smile as he greets, "There's my Little Man. You're going to be pretty busy today, huh?" About to take another bite, but he doesn't hear a single word come out of Peanut. Taking a look, he sees him give back an annoyed look while pouring milk into his cereal. Unable to contain his laughter to his reaction, he informs, "Look… you can grow up to three feet tall or as tall as a building and still… I will call you: My Little Man. So… knowing that you'll give me that look each and every single time I say it… will make me cherish it every single time."
Peanut just stares right back in defeat knowing that he's right. He groans answering, "You win."
"So you managed to find someone to go to the fair with?"
"Uhh, yeah. I managed to find a couple of school friends that are also going."
"Really? That's great. And here I thought the only person you ever talk to is either Wally or your pen pal."
Peanut's brow slowly raises in concern. 'Uh-oh… that's my cue to get out of here before he starts asking questions.' Peanut begins to eat his cereal even faster. "Of course I have friends. I just don't hang out with them as much as I do with Wally."
"Are any of them coming to pick you up?"
'Stay calm, just eat faster and leave.' "No one is, but Bobby's going to take me to them and he's going to spend the whole day with me."
"I can take you. I'm free for the day."
'Crap!' Peanut tries to eat his cereal even faster. "No… uhh… It's alright. You don't want to be around annoying loud kids all day."
His dad stops eating and ponders about it, then quickly shakes his head. "I can feel the headache building up just thinking about it." He hands over his plate to the maid and gets up. "Alright, but you do remember the rules… right?" He walks over to Peanut.
"Yeah, I remember," Peanut answers without looking as he finishes and hands his plate over to the maid. Just as he's about to get up, his dad puts his hand on his shoulder forcing him to sit back down in his seat. Surprised by the act, he looks up to his dad.
"What are they?" he demands giving Peanut a stern look.
Being put on the spot, he carefully thinks of the right answers, "Umm… Always be close to an adult. Don't stray from the pack. Don't use the bathroom alone and don't take anything from strangers or follow anyone that I don't know?"
His dad releases his shoulder and walks away. "Correct."
Relieved, he gets up and waits to see if he has anything else to say.
"Do you have any money?"
Peanut slightly looks out the window seeing Bobby washing the car. "Umm, I kinda spent what I had saved up on something really important.
He pulls out his wallet. "Here you go." As Peanut reaches out for it, his dad slightly pulls away, not being able to grab it. Peanut then looks him in the eyes as he warns, "Be careful out there. Don't want to have another misadventure like what happen last year."
"That's never going to happen again. Pretty sure it was a onetime thing."
"Tell that to your wrist," he remarks back, letting him take the money.
Taking his warning to heart, he simply nods in response, trying not to remember what happened on that day. He grabs the money. "It's not going to happen again." He heads to the exit.
"Have a good time, behave and stay safe."
"I will, I probably will and I will. See you tonight," he says, exiting out.
Peanut rubs his wrist thinking about what he did on that day when he broke his wrist. He pulled the trigger on a magnum, and the recoil was powerful enough to fracture his wrist. He looks back, seeing his dad leaving the kitchen. He sighs, feeling bad about lying. "It's not going to happen again." Taking a moment to relax, he then heads over to Bobby.
Wiping down the car, Bobby glances up and sees Peanut heading his way. "There he is." He squeezes out the water from the sponge and tosses it next to the bucket. He crosses his arms giving him an angry look.
Peanut, noticing his mood, smiles back and says, "Uh oh… someone's angry."
"We need to talk, Mr. Plummer," he demands.
'Yeah, he's mad. I have to take this serious.' He cautiously says, "You really are mad."
"I looked him up. Your so-called: 'pen pal'…"
Peanut tries to sound honest. "He's not that bad."
Not falling for his lie, he shouts, "HE'S NOT THAT BAD?!"
"Shhh! Keep it down," he quickly says looking back at the house.
"I WILL NOT KEEP IT DOWN!" he argues back, pulling a sheet of paper out from within his vest.
Peanut was amazed, wondering where he even pulled it out from.
"Twenty-seven… You see this? Twenty-seven counts of felonies and crimes that he's committed. TWENTY-SEVEN!"
"Umm, maybe he is kinda bad-"
"KINDA?!" He scans through the sheet of paper.
Peanut wonders to himself, 'Is he going to name off every single-'
He holds up a finger. "Number one: Fifteen counts of arson."
Peanut droops his shoulders in despair. 'Yup… he's going to name off every single one.'
Several dozens of excruciating minutes later, "…Number Seventeen: Hundreds of attempts of jaywalking… causing several accidents." He narrows his eyes at the page letting out a growl with gritted teeth, "Unbelievable."
"Umm… takes too much effort to reach the corner of the block to use the crosswalk?" Peanut gives out an excuse. He sees Bobby's eyes quickly look at him, and Peanut sees his neck fur flare slightly. "Eeep!"
Bobby goes back to reading. "Number Eighteen: Impersonating a …high profile …senator? …Of the Central Defense Committee of Spagonia?" He looks at Peanut in disbelief. "My… my home town? Are you kidding me? HE'S THE ONE THAT DID THAT?!"
Peanut begins to chuckle. "He told me about that. It's a pretty fun…ny… sto…" Bobby glares at him as the fur on his neck flares up once more. Regretting what he just said, he nervously apologizes, "Umm, which it wasn't funny at all. It was really serious and bad."
Bobby then notices something on the paper and points at it. "He's… WHAT?! He was part of the BOA? HE WAS WITH THEM?!"
Peanut sticks out one finger, trying to calm him down, "Was… Key word… Was."
He waves the paper at him. "I'm going to show this to your father." He then walks off towards the house.
'That's it… I've had enough.' Upset, Peanut demands back with a clenched fists, "GO AHEAD! AND WHILE YOU'RE AT IT… don't forget to show him the part where he saved me last year at the BOA base… IF IT'S EVEN ON THERE!"
Bobby quickly stops after what he just heard.
Calming down, seeing Bobby stop, he continues, "Which I'm not, being known as "Classified.""
Bobby slowly turns, looking back to Peanut, not saying a word.
"Yeah, it was him. He saved me. It wasn't Sonic. He went as far as to take a bullet for me getting hurt. If it wasn't for him… I wouldn't be standing here right now." He rubs his wrist. "And for that, I want to at least do something nice for him."
Bobby stands there holding the sheet of paper. He folds it then tears it in half and then shoves it back into the inside of his suit. He heads back to the car, passing Peanut. Grabbing a couple of towels, he throws one of them to Peanut.
Peanut catches it and looks right back.
In an apologetic tone, he says while he wipes the front of the hood, "You dry the rear end while I get the front."
Peanut heads to the back of the car and wipes it down. He looks over to Bobby. "Thank you, Mr. Holts."
