Diamond in the Rufflet (Part One)
Lincoln and his friends arrive at the Pokemon Center, and he gives his Pokemon to the nurse there to get them treated after their battles in the Verdant Cavern. While they wait, Lincoln chats with his family for a while.
"So when are you going to do that Grand Trial thingy that Ilima told you about, Lincoln?" asked Leni.
"When I feel like I'm ready." said Lincoln. "I heard that Kahuna Hala is a pretty strong trainer so I want to train up my Pokemon on the way back to Iki Town to be sure I have a good chance of beating him when I do my Grand Trial." Lisa looks at the Pokemon Center via video from her laptop and sees the Pokemon Transport System connected to the PC.
"I wonder if I can create one of those devices here at home?" Lisa asked out loud.
"Do you even know what sort of stuff that thing has in it?" asked Lynn Jr.
"No, but if I did, then I could make one and maybe have Lincoln send some of his Pokemon to us so I can examine them in person." said Lisa.
"I want to play with that Ekans!" said Lana.
"I want to have a few practice spars with that Crabrawler thing." said Lynn Jr.
"I want to meet that Misdreavus, Zubat, and Noibat." said Lucy from behind Lynn Jr, scaring her.
"Maybe I ask Professor Kukui if he has the plans for one for you, Lisa?" suggested Lincoln. Just then, back at the Loud house in the living room, Lisa's laptop screen starts getting a little staticky.
"Strange; what is wrong with my laptop?" asked Lisa. Suddenly, Rotom's face appears on the screen.
"Greetings, everyone." said Rotom, surprising the Louds.
"What the..." said Lynn Jr.
"What is going on?" Lincoln asked from his end.
"Allow me to formally introduce myself. I am Rotom; the Pokemon currently inhabiting Lincoln's phone." said Rotom.
"What are you doing on my laptop screen?" asked Lisa.
"I heard that you require the schematics for a Pokemon Transport Device and I believe I can be of assistance." said Rotom.
Back at the Pokemon Center, Lincoln's Rotom Phone floats over to the Pokemon Transoprt Device and a light comes out and shines over it, revealing its insides.
At the Loud house, electrical blueprints, design plans, and a list of materials appears on Lisa's laptop screen.
"Would you like me to upload these plans?" asked Rotom.
"That would be much appreciated, Rotom." said Lisa. A few seconds later, she gets a notification on her laptop, announcing that the plans were put onto her computer.
"Is there anything else you need?" asked Rotom.
"Not at the moment, but if I wish to examine you in the future, I'll let you know." said Lisa.
"Very well." said Rotom. Its face disappears from Lisa's laptop screen and is replaced with Lincoln.
"What happened?" asked Lincoln.
"Rotom sent me plans for a Pokemon Transport Device." said Lisa. "It looks simple enough to build."
"So are you going to make one?" asked Lincoln.
"I'll get started right away." said Lisa. Just then, Lincoln was notified that his Pokemon were fully healed and he gets them back from the nurse. Once he does, the group exit the Pokemon Center and head north to Route 3.
As they walk down the road, they notice multiple shadows circling the ground; they look up and see a bunch of birdlike Pokemon with brown feathery heads, and red wings.
"What are those?" asked Lincoln as he points his Rotom Phone up towards them.
"Spearow, the Tiny Bird Pokemon. Its reckless nature leads it to stand up to others—even large Pokémon—if it has to protect its territory." said Lincoln's Rotom Phone.
Then without warning, the flock of Spearows dives down towards the group, making them dive to the ground.
"What's their problem?" asked Lincoln.
"We're probably in their territory." said Kiawe.
"What do we do?" asked Lillie. Lincoln takes out two pokeballs and throws them, releasing his Rockruff and Pikachu.
"We'll help out." said Kiawe as he and Sophocles each throw a pokeball; out of Kiawe's comes out a large, turtle-like Pokemon with a spiky, yellow with red-rimmed shell, with a similar one on its head; a long yellow snout with one nostril, and a red-plated tail. Out of Sophocles' pokeball comes out a small gray Pokemon with a ball-like body that has yellow and brown, triangle-shaped spikes on its back.
"What are those Pokemon?" asked Lincoln as he points his Rotom Phone at Kiawe's Pokemon first.
"Turtonator, the Blast Turtle Pokemon. It lives in volcanoes and eats sulfur and other minerals. Materials from the food it eats form the basis of its explosive shell." said Lincoln's Rotom Phone. Lincoln then points it at Sophocles' Pokemon.
"Togedemaru, the Roly-Poly Pokemon. When it's surprised or agitated, the 14 fur spikes on its back will stand up involuntarily." said Lincoln's Rotom Phone.
"Cool!" said Lincoln. He then looks up towards the Spearow. "Pikachu, use Thunder Shock! Rockruff, use Rock Throw!" Pikachu releases a jolt of electricity at the Spearow, hitting several of them, while Rockruff launches rocks that hit more of them.
"Turtonator, Shell Trap!" said Kiawe. The spikes on Turtonator's shell start glowing red; when some of the Spearow hit them, they exploded, sending them flying.
"Togedemaru, use Discharge!" said Sophocles. Togedemaru releases a surge of electricity all around them, hitting some Spearow. As many as the group take down, they just kept coming.
"How many of them are there?" asked Lincoln. He was so focused on the Spearow in front of them, he doesn't notice some were coming at him from behind. Just as they were about to peck at him, another birdlike Pokemon with a thick layer of white feathers on its head, along with a long red and white one sticking up from its forehead, plus a bluish gray body and markings around its eyes; flies out of nowhere and strikes one of them with its wings, getting the group's attention.
"Lincoln!" shouts Mallow as Lincoln backs away from the Spearow that tried to attack him. Lincoln then looks at the Pokemon that saved him and points his Rotom Phone at it.
"Rufflet, the Eaglet Pokemon. With its powerful legs and sturdy claws, it can crack even the hard shells of Shellder and pluck out their insides." said Lincoln's Rotom Phone.
The Rufflet stares down the bunch of Spearow with one of its wings pointing towards them. It leaps forward and releases a barrage of strikes, with few of them hitting their targets. The Spearow responds by pecking at it, knocking it to the ground.
"Hey!" shouts Lincoln as his Rockruff runs over to him. "Rockruff, use Rock Throw!" Rockruff launches several rocks at the Spearow, hitting them. After that, the Spearow all retreat off somewhere.
"Good, they're leaving." said Lillie.
"That's a relief." said Alola Lana. Mallow runs over to Lincoln and checks him all over.
"Are you okay, Lincoln?" asked Mallow with concern.
"I'm fine." said Lincoln. He then looks over at the Rufflet that saved him and runs over to it.
"Is that Rufflet okay?" asked Sophocles. Lincoln sees some injuries on its body.
"It looks hurt pretty bad." said Lincoln as he gently picks it up. "We should take it to the Pokemon Center."
"Let's hurry." said Lillie as the group head back to the Pokemon Center with Lincoln carrying the Rufflet in his arms. While they all ran, Rufflet woke up for a few moments and looks up at Lincoln before closing its eyes.
Later at the Pokemon Center, the nurse was examining the Rufflet.
"Oh dear; this is the third time this week." said the nurse.
"You know this Rufflet?" asked Lincoln.
"Yes." said the nurse. "This little one is always getting into fights with a flock of Spearow north of here."
"We've seen that flock." said Sophocles.
"Why is it fighting so much?" asked Lincoln.
"By nature, Rufflets are warriors; this one must be training by battling all the time." said the nurse as she looks at Rufflet. "He has a lot of power, but not much real control over it."
"He?" Lincoln replied. "How do you know it's a boy?"
"All Rufflets are male." explained the nurse.
"You learn something new everyday." Lincoln says to himself.
"Will he be okay?" asked Alola Lana.
"Don't worry." said the nurse. "The injuries are already healing; I'd say he'll be fully recovered by tomorrow morning." said the nurse.
"That's good to hear." said Lincoln. He looks outside and sees it was starting to get dark.
"Battling those Spearows must've passed a lot of time." said Sophocles.
"I think it'll be too dangerous travelling around a mountain in the dark." said Kiawe.
"Where will we sleep?" asked Lincoln.
"Pokemon Centers have complimentary rooms available for travelling trainers." said Lillie.
"Great." said Lincoln. What the group didn't know was that the Rufflet had one of his eyes open, looking directly at Lincoln while he and his friends talked.
As the group slept, boys in one room, and girls in another; the Rufflet walks out of Pokemon Center's recovery ward and wanders down the hallways; he soon reaches the boys' room and looks around until he sees Lincoln; he then hops onto his chest, snuggles onto the blanket, and falls asleep.
