Episode 14: BEAM!

Captain's log: Stardate 58358.4 - We have arrived at Mars, home-world of the Borg. We are here to get one of those Medeusan transporting weapons installed on the Enterprise.

"We are entering Mars orbit," announced the Medeusan Navigator, Lieutenant Toma.

"On screen," ordered Captain Kara 'Starbuck' Thrace.

The image on the screen showed that they shared orbit of the planet with a large cube-shaped ship and a couple of shipyards. One had four Constitution class ships nearly finished in it, plus room for more to be built. A large one had 16 Apollo class ships in such an early stage of construction as to make them unrecognizable. The two Apollo Class ships that patrolled the Solar System were elsewhere at the moment.

"Captain we are being hailed," announced the Borg Communications Officer, 1 of 20. When she put the message on speaker, she spoke in unison with it: "We are the Borg. You vessel with be adapted to serve the Federation. Resistance is futile."

"Anyone ever tell you how creepy that sounds?" Asked Starbuck.

"It is traditional," replied 1 of 20.

"By the way, I am sorry for your loss," said Starbuck.

"Loss?" Asked 1 of 20, puzzled as to what her captain meant.

"Captain Harry Kim," explained Starbuck. "I know how much he meant to your people. And now that he's gone . . ."

"Captain Kim is not gone," replied 1 of 20.

"Didn't he die when the Constitution was destroyed?" Asked Starbuck.

Captain Kim is Borg," explained 1 of 20. "When he joined us, all that he was before became Borg. All that he was is still part of our group mind . . . just as you are."

"What do you mean, just as I am?" Asked Starbuck.

"For a time, you joined the Borg," explained 1 of 20. "When you did, all that you were became part of the Borg hive mind. Even though you left us to return to individuality, your memories and personality remain part of the Borg Hive mind. We are still, in part, Kara Thrace, even though you are now also a separate individual."

"What about the person you were before you joined the Borg? Asked Starbuck. "Does she still exist?"

"This body belonged to a Talosian who was deemed too telepathically weak to be allowed to breed," said 1 of 20. "We she became Borg, all that she was became part of the Borg. We are Borg now."

"Well, as enlightening as all that was, we need to pull into the slip so our ship can be modified," said Starbuck as she turned back to the rest of the crew.

Captain's log: Stardate 58367.5 - The transporting weapon has been added to the ship, along with a supply of warheads. It is located in the photon torpedo bay and it is possible to transfer the warheads to and from the torpedoes, as well as the transporter weapon.

While this was being installed, the crew got shore leave. Many of us humans, both Kobolian and Cylon, went to Earth to see how its' kobolforming is progressing. The non-humans: Vulcan, Tarquinian, Talosian, and Medeusan tended to visit Venus, where their people have been planting things native to their home planets. Our Borg crew-members remained on the ship to assist with the refit. Now that the transporting weapon is installed, we just need to test it. So we will be traveling to the Ort Cloud to test it.

"Set a course for object 8309, warp 6" commanded Starbuck.

"Course laid in," replied the Medeusan Lieutenant Toma.

"Activating Warp engines," replied Lieutenant Klelia. "Warp Factor One . . . . Warp 2 . . . Warp 3 . . . Warp 4 . . . Warp 5 . . . We have reached our cruising Speed of Warp Factor Six."

"A ship has been spotting coming out of Warp on long range sensors," reported Lieutenant Kalven. "It has been identified as an Ena Scout ship."

"Red Alert!" Commanded Starbuck. "Decrease speed to Full Impulse."

"Shields are up," reported Lieutenant Kalven. "Phasers fully charged, Photon Torpedos and beaming weapon are loaded.

"Open a channel," commanded Starbuck.

"All Hailing Frequencies open," reported 1 of 20.

"This is Captain Kara Thrace of the Federation Starship Enterprise to Ena vessel. You are intruding on Federation territory and are required to leave this system immediately. Please respond."

Suddenly, the Bridge of the Enterprise lurched.

"That was one of their photonic torpedoes," reported Lieutenant Kalven. "Shields at 93%. Should I return fire with phasers, Captain?"

"No! . . . No . . . . We're here to test out the beaming weapon," mused Starbuck. "Lets test it out on them."

"I surmise that a hit near where the boom connects to the main body would an effective target for the weapon," proposed Commander Stonn.

The Ship shook again.

"Shields at 86%," reported Lieutenant Kalven.

"Follow Mister Stonn's suggestion and aim for that spot," commanded Starbuck.

"Target acquired," reported Lieutenant Kalven.

"And . . . Beam!" Ordered Starbuck.

There was a flash of light as the view-screen momentarily when white as the Ena ship exploded.

"The Ena ship has been completely obliterated," reported Commander Stonn.

Captain's log: Stardate 58367.6 - The destruction of the Ena scout ship was deemed a sufficient test for the transporter weapon. With the complete destruction of the Ena ship there purpose in the Solar system remains unknown. Could this be a harbinger of a Shadow attack on this system. Only time will tell.
