A/N: Written for Twisted_and_shout for Seasons of Drabbles - Fall Round 2023.
Iruka gathered his bearings after being dragged down the street. Naruto smirked, proud of himself, letting go of Iruka's hand as soon as they stood in front of a house with an elderly couple passing out candy.
"Aren't you too old for trick or treating?" Iruka asked. He wasn't sure academy aged students fit Halloween tradition. "You aren't wearing a costume, you know?"
Naruto shook his head. He glsnced at the kids flooding the street. His face reddened seeing their monster costumes next to his everyday clothes. "Yeah, who cares. I want candy. I'm seven. I'm a kid!"
He was so excited after class he forgot the costume, Iruka thought, swiping his hand through his hair.
"Here." Iruka takes off his tools pouch and makes space inside by rearranging his blades. "Not as good as a pumpkin, but —"
"Wow! Thanks, Iruka-sensei!" Naruto's eyes widen bigger than the eyes of the glowing orange-eyed jack-o-lantern in the window. He grabs the pouch and holds it up proudly. "Great, I finally get to be a ninja for Halloween, dattebayo!"
Iruka almost says more, but Naruto shoots off like a firecracker and stops behind a group of kids.
"It's not for playing with," Iruka manages. Despite himself, he smiles, invested in Naruto's journey to join the holiday fun.
Naruto was soon next in line. He shouted, "Trick or treat!"
"Oh, my, what a spirited young man. No, I should say shinobi," the elderly woman laughed. She dug into her candy bag and dropped a big bar in the offered pouch. "Here you go."
"All right! Thanks, Granny."
Naruto bolted back to Iruka. "Let's share what she gave me before the next house!"
"On one condition," Iruka said, waving a finger teasingly. "Give me more than half for helping you."
Naruto groaned. "What? No fair!"
A/N: Naruto would have his own ninja tool pouch already, but I thought of him not having it with him and he takes Iruka's to feel like he's extra cool being kind of dressed up like Iruka for a change of pace.
