"ALVIN!!" shouted Stoick jumping out of his seat. Alvin glanced over at Stoick "Hey Stoick, how's the son?" He asked grinning tauntingly. He knew exactly how the son was but he wanted to get back at him for Hiccup. It worked because Stoick's face turned firery red.
Axel stood up "Alvin" he said warningly. He didn't like Stoick and would love to see Alvin beat him but he didn't know how it would affect Hiccup and how he would feel.
Alvin let out a sigh of resignation and disappointment before taking a seat on the other side of Axel. "So what are we doing?"
"Watching a magic box that shows us the past and future"
"Oh"
(The villagers, Schmidt , and Axel pull a damaged ship up to the dock at Dragon Isles. Toothless and Hiccup stand to the side.)
"What happened?"
"Dragon attack" a random Viking replied simply. The Viking that asked the question wanted to ask a follow up question but took a look at the villagers solemn faces and decided against it.
Hiccup(v.o.): Here on Dragon Isles, Well before it was Dragon Isles. we've always done things one way: the Viking Way. Since the dragons came, the Viking Way has become, well, the Hard Way. Unfortunately some people, like my father, still refuse to change.
Schmidt: It's that rogue dragon again. That's the second boat this week he's destroyed.
Axel: Well, we lost another whole catch. We could have saved it if we'd gotten there sooner.
Hiccup: Well, I know how you could have gotten there sooner.
Axel: Here we go again.
Chuckles erupted from the crowd. Gobber who was chuckling the most turned towards the chief of Dragon Isles "let me guess, he wants you to ride a dragon" He asked. Axel smiled and nodded.
"Ahh, classic Hiccup" replied Gobber fondly
Hiccup: If you'd flown there on a dragon you could have been there in five minutes instead of two hours. And you might even have been able to chase that rogue dragon away for good.
Axel: As the chief, I do things the Viking Way. Not the Dragon Way.
Stoick nodded in agreement. The Viking way was the best way.
Hiccup: Well, the Viking way is costing us a lot of fish and almost as many boats.
Schmidt: The boy's got a point. If you were on a dragon you could protect this island from a lot of things. Even Alvin.
"Protect the Island from me?! Where's the trust?" Alvin asked
"You don't get trust" Stoick snapped at him
"I wasn't talking to you" Alvin replied back dismissively.
Hiccup: Right! You-You could use a dragon to--
Axel: You're right Schmidt. Alvin knows we have dragons. He'll be back.
Schmidt: You saw what those dragons did. They had Alvin on the run. Imagine if you were the one commanding them.
Axel: I'm listening.
Hiccup: (To himself) But clearly not to me.
"Hiccup are you talking to yourself?" Stoick asked in concern
"Yeah, so? A man can talk to himself if he wants!" Hiccup replied with finality but Stoick had to go one step further by telling Hiccup that he wasn't a man causing Hiccup to glare at his ex-father. He was too a man.
Schmidt: I can see it know. A proud chief ruling his domain above aboard a fearsome fire-breathing reptile. Ooooh, it gives me goosebumps.
Hiccup: That's what I've been trying to--
Axel: Schmidt's right. I need to learn to fly. When do we start the lessons?
Hiccup: I don't know, shouldn't we ask Schmidt?
"I thought you were the dragon trainer?" Astrid asked Hiccup
"I am" He confirmed
"Than why are you asking Schmidt when-" she began to ask but was cut off by Gobber telling her that was Hiccup being sarcastic.
Schmidt : Eh, I don't really have a preference, but sooner is always better. Don'tcha think?
(Scene changes to the cliff just in front of the Academy. Hiccup is showing his father Toothless' saddle controls.)
Hiccup: Alright, I've made a new stirrup so you'll be able to control Toothless.
Axel: You hear that? It's me that's supposed to be controlling you
"You don't control the dragon" Fishlegs stated
"So the dragon controls you?"
"Of course not!"
Hiccup: Whoa, whoa, Dad, uh, before you get on a dragon you've got to show him he can trust you.
Axel: He already trusts me. I'm his chief!
Hiccup: Uh, it's very simple. Just give me your hand.
Axel: I didn't come here to hold hands, Hiccup.
Hiccup: It's okay, bud.
Hiccup: You feel that? (Axel has his hand on Toothless' muzzle)
Axel: (Pulls hand away) Yeah. Still dry and scaly.
Toothless glared at Axel for that comment. Axel gave him an apologetic smile but Toothless turned away from him.
Hiccup: That's not what I meant.
Axel: Can I get on him now?
"Patience...Patience" Chanted the twins
Axel: Alright, let's get on with this madness. (Hiccup and Axel mount Toothless)
Hiccup: We'll start out nice and slowly. Just give him a little nudge when you wanna-- (Axel kicks Toothless in the side and the trio zooms into the air)
Hiccup: I SAID NUDGE!
Axel: That was my nudge!
"Maybe a lighter nudge next time chief"
"Noted Fishlegs"
Hiccup: Just remember, the tail controls everything.
Axel: I know that.
Hiccup: Then why are you heading for that rock?!
Axel: Because you're distracting me!
Hiccup: Just let out the--
Axel: TAIL! I KNOW! (Flying irratically all over the sky)
Hiccup: Left! LEFT! No, no, the other left!
Axel: Dragon's fault.
Toothless did his version of a scowl. It wasn't his fault, it was a team effort.
Hiccup: You gonna blame that on the dragon too, Dad?
Axel: Yep.
Hiccup petted Toothless on his head.
Hiccup: SLOW DOWN!
Axel: I'm trying!
Axel: See?
Hiccup: Actually, no. No, I had my eyes closed!
Hiccup: You're coming in too hard! Open the tail! With your foot!
Axel: I'm opening the tail!
Hiccup: That's my leg, Dad! (They crash onto a beach)
Hiccup: I am so sorry.
Hiccup: Dad, wait. Where are you going?
Axel: Nah, I'm done with this, Hiccup! I've got a village to look after.
Axel: I'll need a ride home.
Axel: (Back in the air with Hiccup on the pedal) This isn't the way home.
"No, it's A way home" corrected Hiccup "the long way" he added as an afterthought
Hiccup: Just sit back and enjoy the ride! We are taking the scenic route!
Axel: Right now my lunch is taking the scenic route into my throat!
"Ew"
Hiccup: Dad, just think about how much easier your chiefing can be on the back of a dragon.
Axel: Well, I prefer to be down on the-- Wait. What's going on over there? (Sees a bunch of yaks on their sides in a field)
Axel: Some genius has been yak-tipping again. (Toothless blows up a cart and they see the twins hiding there)
"Of course it was them"
The twins high-fived each other
Tuffnut: Be quiet. Maybe they don't see us.
Axel: Make that geniuses. (yells at the Twins) I want every one those yaks back on its feet!
Hiccup: Nice chiefing, Dad! Let's see what else we can get done today!
Hiccup: (Comes across wild boars eating up a cabbage patch) Toothless, fire!
Axel: Fire again, dragon.
"But the boars are gone" said Ack.
Hiccup: Dad, the boars are gone.
Ack blushed
Axel: Who cares? I like the sound it makes.
"Ah, yes. The sound of destruction" sighed Ruffnut causing her twin to make an identical sigh saying "It's a beautiful sound"
Hiccup: Take us up, bud. There's something else I want you to see. (Takes them up above the clouds for a bird's eye view of Dragon Isles)
Axel: Whoa. I've spent my entire life on Dragon Isles. Climbed its hills, explored its forests, swam its waters. I've traveled every inch, but I never thought I'd see it like this.
Noell smiled. It really was beautiful sight, she still remembered the flight Hiccup took her on that changed her views on dragons in the first place. It was so magical seeing Berk like no other Viking had before. Something you don't forget and something you definitely want to experience.
Hiccup: It's beautiful, isn't it?
Axel: No, it's more than that Hiccup. Look at them. All of my people. Everyone is safe. It's a good feeling.
(The next morning, Hiccup wakes up to find that Toothless is not there in the room with him.)
Hiccup: Toothless? Toothless? (Exits the house) DAD?!
(Axel is riding Toothless erratically all over the village)
Noell: Was that--?
Fishleg: Unexpected? Disturbing?
Noell: Yep.
"Hey you two!" Axel said playfully glaring at both Noell and Fishlegs causing them to smile. "Sorry chief" They said in unison.
Alvin openly laughed freaking a few people out.
Hiccup: Uh, Dad, what are you doing?
Axel: Kicking butt and taking names, that's what!
Hiccup: Uh, on Toothless?
Axel: Oh, we've been all over Dragon Isles. Chiefing has never been so easy.
Hiccup: Yeah, but Dad, uh, Toothless is my dragon.
Axel: You picked a good one. Just came in to grab my hatchet. We're helping Bergman break down a fence.
Hiccup Yeah, that's, that's great, but you need to understand that Toothless is--
Axel: Oh, you're right. I don't need my hatchet. Toothless can just blow that fence down with a fireball. Ha-ha! Up, dragon.
Hiccup: Don't worry, bud. I can fix this.
Hiccup: So, see ya there, Toothless. I really hope...
Toothless glares at his rider. He hoped! He hoped! At least he fixed it although he did take his sweet time about it.
(Axel flies away on Toothless again. Later, Axel continues completing duties flying on Toothless. They scare a group of Boars into a barn in the village.)
Viking: Thank you, Axel!
Axel: Well done!
(Axel and Toothless stop a few barrels rolling down the village hill. They fall off the edge only for Axel to catch two in each arm while Toothless catches the third one)
Viking: Thank you, Axel!
(Axel tells Toothless to blast the sea, throwing fish into the air which he then catches)
Axel: Come on, Toothless, faster!
Axel: Attaboy!
(It is evening now and Axel lands Toothless at home, while Hiccup and Noell look on from the steps of the Great Hall)
Axel: Same time tomorrow, Toothless?
Hiccup: You see that? That's what it looks like to be ridden all day by a four-hundred-pound man.
"Really, another crack about my weight?" Asked Axel to Hiccup who just shrugged wearing an amused smile on his face.
Noell: At least you got your Dad on a dragon.
"Good job, look at the positive side" praised Thrya
Hiccup: Yeah, now I just need to figure out how to get him off one.
Noell: Why don't you just give him the ol' "Honey and The Hatchet"? You know, you tell him something he wants to hear, that's the "Honey" part, before you hit him in the head with something he doesn't. You know, "The Hatchet".
Hiccup: Why does your advice always involve weapons?
"My advice doesn't always involve weapons. Only most of the time"
"At least she honest"
(The next morning at the Hiccup's House)
Axel: Toothless? Toothless?
(Hiccup spots Toothless up hiding in the rafters)
"Never thought I'd see the day when T was sick of flying"
Axel: Where's Toothless?
Hiccup: Ah, I don't know, but you... Look great, Dad! What is it? Are you, d-did you do something with your beard?
"You Hiccup, are a terrible lier"
"So I've been told" Hiccup replied dryly
Axel: Alright, you've given me the honey, now just give me the hatchet.
Hiccup: Look, Dad, you can't just keep taking Toothless. He's mine.
Axel: Alright. That seems fair. So, find me one.
Hiccup: Uh, sorry?
Axel: Find me a dragon as good as Toothless. That shouldn't be so hard for the Head of the Dragon Isles Dragon Training Academy.
"When your father is picky i when choosing a dragon, it is" Hiccup muttered.
(Scene changes to the Arena later in the day with the Dragon Riders and their dragons assembled)
Hiccup: The finest dragon species on the island. They're all represented at this Academy.
Snotlout: (Showcasing Hookfang) But the Monstrous Nightmare is the only one with the brawn and prestige for men of our stature. Hop on board. Feel the Monstrous Nightmare difference. And on those cold winter nights, its whole body heats up. Just enough to keep you cozy. Lemme warm him up for you.
(Snotlout flicks Hookfang on the nose, and, irritated, Hookfang heats up too much, searing Axel's rear end)
Axel: Aaaahhh!!
The room roared with laughter.
Snotlout: Now should I put you down for one? They come in an assortment of colors.
Noell: (Noell talks about Deadly Nadders) Since she's beautiful, people think she's not tough. But you should never underestimate me. Uh, her--uh, us.
"Nice save" Hiccup comments with a smile
Axel: Well, she is a beauty. (Pats Stormfly firmly on the nose)
Noell: Be careful with the--! (Alarmed, Stormfly shoots spikes at Axel)
"Too slow" Hiccup deadpanned to which Noell replied by elbowing him
Snotlout: Monstrous Nightmare's looking a little better now, huh, Chief?
Axel: Next! (Looks at the Twins and Barf and Belch squabbling amongst themselves)
Axel: Next!
"Come on chief" Ruffnut moaned
"You didn't even give us a chance!" Her twin finished
"I didn't need too. I saw enough"
Fishlegs: (Talking up the Gronckle) Lemme tell you, what you're really looking for is loyalty. A dragon who will be there for you no matter what. The last face you see at night and the first face you see in the morning. Warming your bed when it's cold outside, a shoulder to cry on when the world has turned its back on you. How could you not love a Gronckle?
Axel: Sorry, son. But I'm looking for a dragon. Not a mother.
"See, picky" Hiccup huffed crossing his arms over his chest.
Axel: I haven't seen anything that can hold a candle to a Night Fury.
Hiccup: Me neither! But Toothless is the only Night Fury on Dragon Isles. And he's mine.
Schmidt: (Runs into the Arena) Axel! Another boat is being attacked! It's the rogue dragon again.
Axel: Let's go! (Both Axel and Hiccup step up on Toothless at the same time)
Hiccup: Oh, right... What was I thinking? (concedes to Axel)
Many people chuckled
Hiccup: At least he blocks the wind...
"How did I not hear that?"
(The scene changes to Mulch and Bucket on a fishing boat at sea being attacked by a Thunderdrum.)
Hiccup: I don't believe it. A Thunderdrum! They say it gets its power from Thor himself.
Axel: Fire a warning shot. Let him know we mean business.
Hiccup: Toothless! Plasma blast!
Hiccup: I think we scared him off, but we've got to get everyone out of here.
Axel: Come on, lads! We'll escort you back to shore. You'll have no more--gahh! (gets yanked off the boat into the water by the Thunderdrum's tail)
Bucket: No more what?!
Hiccup: Dad!
Mulch: Uh, Axel can swim, right?
Axel: (Axel and the dragon emerge from the water onto the boat, fighting) Oh, he's a fighter! He's got spunk! This is the one, Hiccup! I've found my dragon! Now all you have to do is train him for me.
"I was not expecting that. Out of all the dragons he could have chosen he chose a thunderdrum. A dragon I've never trained before!" Hiccup ranted
"Hiccup"
"Yeah Noell?"
"Shut up"
"Shutting up"
(At the Training Arena, the Thunderdrum is caged with a muzzle on)
Hiccup: (To the Thunderdrum) Sorry about the muzzle.
"Your talking to the beast like he can understand you"
"He's not a beast" echoed throughout the room as many people spoke the same thing at the same time.
Axel: Alright, let's get me on his back. Times a-wastin'.
Hiccup: Now we just got to get one in his size
"What is with you and jokes about my weight?" Axel asked his son with both annoyance and amusement.
Hiccup shrugged.
Axel: What was that?
Hiccup: Nothing.
"Nice save" Noell said to Hiccup repeating what he said to her earlier in the episode.
Hiccup: Look. You have to approach him properly, Dad. Especially a dragon like this. He is one of the most powerful dragons I've ever seen.
"Next to Toothless of course" Hiccup stated proudly "isn't that right bud?" He turned and asked his dragon.
Toothless warbled in reply
Axel: That's why I picked him. They say his roar gets its power from Thor himself! He's the God of Thunder, you know.
Hiccup: So, I've heard. Still. You have to let the dragon know you're a friend.
Axel: A friend, huh? Oh! Like me and Schmidt?
Hiccup: Yeah, perfect! What did you do when you two met?
Axel: "That's my wife you're talking to, you one-legged lout!"
Astrid snorted "Is that seriously what happened?" she asked.
"Yup" Replied Axel and Schmidt cheerfully.
Hiccup: Not exactly the approach I had in mind. Dad, what's real important is that you let him know that he can trust you. You have to make eye contact.
Axel: Uh-huh. Sure.
Hiccup: (Opens the cage door) Stay calm. Be gentle. And you'll know you've formed a bond when he bows his head to let you climb on his back.
(Axel puts a hand on the Thunderdrum's snout. The dragon snaps at his hand. Angered, Axel punches him.)
Hiccup: Hey, hey! Whoa! What happened to trust?
Axel: Talk to him! He's the one who tried to take off my hand!
"We'll, you did kidnap the dragon. I doubt it's happy to be there" pointed out Glug.
(The Thunderdrum charges Axel and he grabs him by the tail and jumps on his back)
Hiccup: Would you stop it, Dad? This is not bonding.
Axel: Ah! You got to show these beasts who's boss!
Axel: Look at that, I'm on his back! Any questions?
(The Thunderdrum flies around the Arena then out the exit, trying to dislodge Axel)
Hiccup: Oh, too many to ask
Axel: Wah-ho! Easy! Don't you know who I am?
"Yeah, the guy who kidnapped him," shouted Glug.
(Later Hiccup is commiserating with Schmidt, while Schmidt is removing a tooth from a Gronckle)
Hiccup: I talk to him, but my dad just doesn't listen! It's like I'm wasting my breath. It's Stoick the Vast all over again.
Axel looked hurt and Hiccup immediately turned around towards his dad "I'm so sorry dad! I was just frustrated-" but was cut off by Axel holding up his hand.
"It's okay son. I deserved that one."
Hiccup smiled at his dad to which he returned. Stoick looked upon the scene with jealousy.
Schmidt: I got it!
Hiccup: Thank you. At least somebody understands me...
Schmidt: (pulls out a bad tooth) I meant this. Nasty.
"I stand corrected."
Schmidt: Now what were you saying?
Hiccup: Ugh! My father!
Schmidt: Right! Axel.
Schmidt: Let me explain something about fathers and sons. It's a father's job to listen to his son without ever letting on that he's heard a word.
"That doesn't make any sense!" Exclaimed Gust
"It might not make sense but it's the truth. Well...For my father anyway" Hiccup said remembering just how much Schmidt's advice came true.
Axel: Hiccup!
Hiccup: Dad, what happened?
Axel: Ah, the beast threw me off and flew off to Thor-knows-where.
Hiccup: Well, can you blame him? All you ever did was fight him!
"And kidnap him!" exclaimed Glug again.
"We get it!!" Shouted Avrid
Axel: Dah! He loved it!
"I think by the way he flew off after he threw you off says otherwise" Bard said.
Hiccup: Yeah, apparently not.
Axel: We can stand here arguing, or we can go get my dragon.
(Late in the day, Axel assembles the Riders to look for the Thunderdrum. Axel and Hiccup are both riding Toothless)
Axel: Alright! We have to fan out and cover every part of the island!
Hiccup: Ruffnut and Tuffnut, you take--
Axel: You take the West side!
Tuffnut: You got it, Chief.
Hiccup: Can anybody even see me back here?!
Axel: WEST SIDE!
Axel: Snotlout, to the North side!
Noell: Come on, Fishlegs. We'll take the East side.
Fishlegs: But-but it's allergy season.
"Fishlegs, remember we're Ingermans. We don't have allergies" Helga Ingerman reminded her son kindly which only caused Fishlegs to blush. His mother should tell that to Schmidt's is ear wax.
Noell: Fishlegs!
Fishlegs: Not me. It's her.
"Your dragon has Allergies?" Astrid asked as she examined Meatlug.
Fishlegs gave a side hug to Meatlug "Her name is Meatlug Astrid and of course she has allergies!"
Astrid instead rolled her eyes at the name Meatlug. What kind of name was that? Only Fishlegs would name his dragon THAT.
Axel: Well, your friends sure are an odd bunch, but they sure know what they're doing on those dragons.
The teens beamed "Thanks chief!"
Hiccup: Thank you. I think...
Hiccup: Okay, when we find the dragon, you might wanna think about approaching him...differently. Obviously, he doesn't like being pushed around so--
Axel: There he is! (spots the Thunderdrum near a cave in the forest)
Hiccup: And, once again, not a word goes through...
(Axel, Hiccup, and Toothless land. The still-muzzled Thunderdrum charges from the cave)
Hiccup: (Speaking to Toothless) Settle down, bud.
Axel: Let me handle this. This dragon's mine.
Hiccup: Dad!
Axel: (Hammer poised for a confrontation, Axel notices another Thunderdrum deeper in the cave) There's another Thunderdrum in there.
Hiccup: He's hurt.
"An easy kill than" Stoick said causing the Dragon Isles Elder to hit him with her staff on the head while glaring. Gothi smiled at her liking the elder more and more.
Axel: Well, he-he's protecting his friend. That's why he's been taking all those fish. Go get the others. And tell Schmidt to get ready.
Hiccup: Dad, I can't just leave you here!
Axel: Go!
"Was that order from my dad or the chief?"
"Both"
(Hiccup and Toothless fly away)
Axel: Looks like it's just you and me, big fella.
Axel: I want to help, trust me.
(Out of the forest appears a huge group of wild boars approaching the cave)
Axel: Ah, they smell the blood of your wounded friend.
(The boars attack and Axel fights them off. On jumps on Axel and the Thunderdrum whacks him off. More boars approach. Axel holds his hand out to the Thunderdrum and they bond. Together they fight off the ravaging boars)
Viking throughout the room cheered, even some Berkians causing Ernalynn to smile. She could already see some Berkians changing their minds.
Axel: Aww look at us! We're bonded!
Hiccup: (Hiccup and Toothless return) What. Happened?
Axel: Ah, we battled a few boars, did a little bonding.
Hiccup: You?
"You look so surprised" Fiske said glancing over at Hiccup.
"Can you blame me? All he did was fight with it."
Fiske couldn't help but nod "That is true."
Axel: Of course! There's something you should know about dragons. It's all about trust.
Hiccup: So, you actually heard that?
Axel: Yes. I just said it. I listen.
"See! I was right" Schmidt shouted proudly causing several people to smile.
"I guess you were... right" Astrid hesitated to say the word right. She hated to admit she was wrong even more than not being the best.
"I know, I just said I was right" replied Schmidt goofily.
(Back at the village, Axel on the Thunderdrum, help lower the injured Thunderdrum down to Schmidt for healing)
Axel: Take good care of him. He's a friend.
(They fly off to complete chiefly chores)
Hiccup (v.o.): My dad still does things the Viking Way. Fortunately, Toothless and I showed him that the Viking Way can also be the Dragon Way.
"We'll that was a shorter ending than usual" Spitelout sourly said "I was expecting a longer life lesson conclusion". Spitelout didn't want to be here, and he didn't want to watch this stupid magic box. He didn't want to watch something that wasn't about him, and he didn't want to watch his son being a traitor. He didn't want to watch his son being one upped by anyone, especially Hiccup the Useless. This viewing was diminishing the Jorgenson name!!
Many people sensed the sour tone and rolled their eyes deciding to ignore him which made Spitelout scowl. He did not like being ignored, Jorgenson's weren't ignored! He was about to make this a point when his own wife, Dahlia Jorgenson, interrupted.
Dahlia knew her husband and therefore knew what he was like. She could sense an argument and/or tantrum from a mile away and from the looks of it her husband was about to start one. She personally didn't want to hear or put up with it right now, so she decided to put a stop to it.
She turned towards the three children who were hosting this gathering "shall we continue?" She asked them politely. They nodded cheerfully and turned on the magic box so it would begin playing the next episode. She sat back and ignored the glare her husband was sending her. In her mind she had just prevented a disaster.
