Chapter 59: Genes for the gifted

Wheels screeched, streets passed.

For a moment Shizuo ducked below the safety of the car window's ledge as a rush of red and blue immersed the streets in obvious colors.

The police. They were searching for them.

Of course. After arriving at a more than just gruesome scene-

"You are all over the news," the long haired guy spoke.

Looking towards the front Shizuo noticed there were more people inside the car.

Sure, one had to be driving after all, but apart from the one in the back there was also a girl sitting in the front row.

Ginger curls dipped into her shoulders. If Shizuo had to guess he would have said she was barely eighteen.

As for the guy next to her, steering the van-

"How did you survive?" A tall man of old age wearing nothing but black had spoken the words in a low baritone voice. Gray silver hair covered most of his head and a set of old glasses rested on his nose.

Just by chance Shizuo saw a silver cross accompanied by brown beads dangling from his right wrist as he reached for the blinker and a white collar standing up underneath his chin.

A priest.

Feeling more uncomfortable than he should, Shizuo found himself hesitating at the question.

"... I killed him." Unexpected laughter found response to his statement as the young man in the back shook his head.

"We saw that," he announced amused, "Good job by the way. Didn't think you had it in you."

A soft groan from the left reached Shizuo's ears and he quickly whipped around.

"What do you mean, you saw?"

Izaya- He had woken up.

Having lost consciousness for a moment he seemed to have regained it now as he slowly heaved himself into a more comfortable position.

Turning around Shizuo was over him quicker than Izaya could react.

"Izaya- are you okay?" A soft blink followed in which Izaya was quite overwhelmed by the care reflected in Shizuo's eyes.

Damn.

He had really worried him, huh?

A soft smile accompanied by a nod was given before his attention directed back to their main center of attention.

"Depends. What's going on, Roy?" Izaya had immediately recognized the guy. Seeing as he heard more of his voice than he saw of his face it had been an easy task even with his eyes closed.

Finally having a name for the new face Shizuo turned to look at the guy.

Nothing more but a shrug was given before Roy pulled his phone out of his pocket. Quick and agile fingers flew across the touchscreen and within half a minute he pulled up a video.

News Report was written all across the top and faster than Izaya liked to, he recognized the site displayed.

It was the street in front of Shinra's apartment.

The camera must have been installed somewhere opposite to the road. Maybe at a coffee shop. Must have been an illegal one since not even Vincent seemed to have known about it.

No matter where it had been, it definitely had caught the scenery too well.

Vincent's car, the corpse of the woman he had killed, Izaya, Shizuo-

Too detailed to Shizuo's liking he suddenly saw his own actions take place from a third point of view vision. And that camera had really caught Shizuo's deeds well.

Using only that single frame to show to the public it served as nothing but a warning and request for cooperation for the police.

They had of course cut the video in a way that made it seem as if Shizuo had been the bad guy all along, together with Izaya.

"Fuck." Shizuo whispered, and Izaya wasn't quite sure whether he was talking about seeing himself killing a human being, or the fact that the entirety of Japan was now out to kill them.

"Shinra will die to get a blood sample from you once he sees this," Izaya chuckled, but somehow the joke felt bitter to his lips at the facts that now laid bare to behold.

They were fucked.

The police had already been on his heels, but now? They would chase Shizuo too. His brother as well and-

"Anyway, I'm talking about your ability. The bullets, they didn't pierce you did they?" Roy continued as if nothing had happened at all and to be honest it unnerved the raven more than he was willing to admit.

He already had to gather every shred of concentration left with the blood loss and multiple gunshots he had suffered so it came a bit as a hassle that Roy was breaking every flow of decent string of thoughts.

"Can someone tell me what's going on?" Izaya sighed with minor frustration.

It was the father, steering the van, that spoke next.

"We are all incubi," he answered and Izaya felt something die inside him at the uselessness of the answer.

"I figured as much, will you keep spouting basic facts or actually enlighten us?" Izaya had probably sounded less grateful than he was supposed to be. After all these guys saved Shizuo and him from getting caught red handed. And yet right now with all of these facts laying bare he couldn't quite get around downplaying his annoyance.

"How do you know?" the girl from the front gasped, and turned to the back.

She was quite pretty. Her ginger curls bounced at every move she made, just as the more than generous bust size.

Brilliant eyes of green looked at Shizuo and Izaya as though they were her newest pets as pure curiosity inscribed in her soft cheeks.

"I already figured as much back in the cell," Izaya answered, while glancing at Roy for a second, "And considering you aren't screaming and running for your life you are either one yourself or a friend of his. As a friend, however, you should still be looking out for him and talk him out of such a stupid idea of saving strangers with similar genes. It's a different story if you share those genes, however."

Feeling fatigue take the better of him, Izaya's voice faded out towards the end.

God. He had never been a fan of pain or getting shot, but he was really making a bad habit of it recently, wasn't he?

"Heh, you are a smart one aren't you?" the girl chuckled and Izaya rolled his eyes.

"I hope you are as well," he whispered, before directing his gaze towards Roy. "Where are my sisters?"

"Forgotten in an abyss?" Roy snorted and Izaya sighed relieved. Because that had obviously been a joke. And what kind of retard would resort to jokes if he had actually fucked something up?

"You fetched them as well?" he concluded and received the confirmation needed by a quick nod.

"Them and a pretty bitchy secretary." Roy shrugged, "Was hard to find, but our father here knows a neat trick to accomplish that."

Glancing back to the front, Izaya's gaze shortly met the priest's.

A quick thankful nod was given and the holy man's attitude softened to a pleased smile.

So they had not only saved Shizuo and Izaya but his sisters too.

It was a fun idea that Namie had been taken as well considering her average human genes, but he figured it had been her condition to let them be taken.

"Alright." Izaya sighed as most of the anxiety cursing in his veins subsided.

This was good.

As it stood Shizuo was safe. His siblings were safe too. Shizuo's brother knew how to take care of himself and as a famous actor he wouldn't be targeted as easily.

For now he could rest- everything else could be thought about later.

"Are you okay?" Shizuo asked.

He must have noticed Izaya's body growing less tense.

Before Izaya was able to confirm that Roy had already snorted.

"I really hope you are. I can pass on receiving the same treatment as that bastard," he laughed and Izaya frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Lights passed left and right of the street. It was when the familiar colors of green and orange used in traffic lights illuminated the side of Roy's face that he answered.

"You have bonded. From the first second you two had sex that's what he is trying to say. You are a walking timebomb if something happens to him."

... bonded?

Izaya knew there were certain conditions to be met in order to receive abilities.

Was this one of them?

"What he is trying to say is, you didn't kill Vincent of your own urge alone," the girl from the front explained, "You were…. let's say, forced to do so. From your Incubus side. As protection."

Eyes were rolled and Roy let his chin rest in his palm.

"Maria, he still killed him with his own hands, you know."

A quick forgiving smile flashed to Maria's lips as she glanced towards Shizuo.

"Yeah, but-"

"I don't care."

Maria was obviously trying to comfort Shizuo. She probably thought he was feeling guilty for what he did.

Which he did. Initially. But what Izaya said had been right. "He wanted to kill Izaya. So I don't care how I did it. If it was my Incubus side helping then I should probably thank that damned demon." Shizuo continued with unwavering confidence.

It shut the girl up pretty quickly and sent Roy into a laughing fit.

"I like the way you think," he announced amused. Lips cracking into curiosity he tilted his head before pointing at Shizuo. "But it still doesn't explain how you suddenly became Mr. invincible."

"Wasn't that due to the bond you mentioned?" Izaya asked, but to his disappointment Roy shook his head.

"This bond serves as fuel for abilities and protection for you. But it doesn't grant any sudden extra powers."

It was then that a sudden rush of red and blue immersed the van as a whole.

Faster than Izaya was able to follow, the car stopped and the priest turned off the engine.

One glance out of the window was enough to ascertain their situation.

A police stop.

They had set up barriers around the city and were checking every car going by.

Of course- what else should Izaya have expected them to do?

"Fuck." Shizuo cursed under his breath and to be honest for a moment Izaya shared that urge.

This situation was bad- once they found them it was over. And the priest and Roy-

"Calm down. Just don't move." Roy suddenly said and to Izaya's surprise he seemed awfully relaxed.

Bewilderment reflected in Shizuo's expression at the order, but Izaya quickly moved his arm forth to keep the blond back.

His head shook quickly, signing for Shizuo to simply do as told.

Perplexion along with doubt crossed his eyes, but he did as told nonetheless, with a body tensed to the point it might snap.

Trust.

It was something Izaya didn't extend for a number of recountable reasons. But seeing as he was the one majorly lacking information whilst Roy seemed to retain all answers he sought it was wise to act according to his will.

Besides, Roy had already helped him back at the cell. Apart from that he also expended the extra effort to get Izaya's sisters. And considering he knew about "the bitchy woman" guarding them at the moment Izaya was convinced he had spoken the truth.

And so they sat.

And the officer approached.

Scrolling the window down, light of red and blue flooded the inside the van and Shizuo held his breath.

An officer leaned into the window and looked towards the priest.

"God day, officer." The father greeted politely and Maria nodded her head in a silent greeting as well.

Rain lightly sprayed the inside of the van's interior and the police officer lifted his cap for a second in his own formal greeting.

"Pardon father, but we have to check every car on the way through this area." A quick nod followed on the priest's part as the officer gazed into the vehicle.

Attentive eyes scanned the front and back. Looking at Izaya and Shizuo head on, Izaya's heart sank for a moment.

He was clearly looking at them.

Then he smiled. But it was no grin, no smirk or anything that would point to his discovery of the wanted pair of incubi.

Instead he seemed mildly pleased.

Why?

"I understand, no worries. As usual you are doing a great job to uphold our safety. Must be a harsh night, isn't it?" the priest continued charmantly, recapturing the cop's attention.

"Can't lie, today's shift really sucks," the officer laughed and Maria returned the mood with a light smile.

"Any chance we can help?" he offered and the officer stepped back from the vehicle.

"No father, just be on your way and make sure to stay home." With a quick gesture he waved towards his colleagues and the engine of the can restarted.

"Alright, will do," the priest replied and so the van moved. The windows scrolled back up- as if nothing had ever happened at all and Izaya released the breath he had held.

A short glance was exchanged with Shizuo before Maria sighed theatrically.

"Well done." The priest complimented but Matia merely rolled her eyes.

"Could you rant a bit less next time?" she complained, but the priest shook his head.

"Any less and he might have asked for an inspection of our car," he explained, but Maria didn't quite seem too convinced.

"There is no room in our back for two people," she argued and the father smiled.

"I think with the news being what they are he would have looked anyway."

"What was that?" Shizuo beat Izaya to the question, interrupting the small dispute of sorts as the van steered onto the highway.

A beaming smile was spread to the back as Maria grinned.

"Don't worry, I camouflaged you. He saw nothing but three cats on the backseat of our car."

Izaya snorted.

Of course.

They were all incubi.

With Izaya shopping time and Shizuo reading his thoughts he should have figured she had an ability of her own.

Even Shizuo seemed to understand as he relaxed.

"Say that earlier," he groaned softly. His slight frustration didn't stem from the fact of having been mistaken for a feline but rather the fact that they had been told nothing about what was about to happen.

Izaya understood, and he was glad.

Because with this they were safe. At least for now and an undefined amount of time to come.

Letting his back rest against the soft interior of the van he sighed contently before letting his gaze brush across the bypassing landscape.

They could rest.

Heal.

Take a breather. At least for a while.

A small smile made its way to the corner of his lips as he shook his head.

"Why cats though?" he asked, and Maria shrugged with a quick grin.

"Because I love them."
